Mychael Barratt Oil Paintings and Original Prints 28th April - 20 May
Mychael Barratt
Oil Paintings and Original Prints “I work in the English narrative art tradition although I am not English. I was born in Canada but think of myself as a Londoner ever since arriving for what was meant to be a two-week stay thirty years ago. I have that immigrant’s zeal for my adopted home and include local settings and recognizable vistas in much of my work. My paintings and prints display a love of art history and a kinship with Hogarth in particular, but the emotional current flows to Chagall, the gentle master of joyfulness, optimism and family love. Language is hugely important too. My titles are an integral part of the work and the action often involves verbal and visual puns and references to artistic and literary themes” Mychael Barratt was born in Toronto, Canada and has been living and working in the UK since 1984. He is a painter and printmaker whose detailed work is often as narrative as it is visual and was the commissioned artist for the Globe Theatre throughout Mark Rylance’s reign as Artistic Director. His book Intaglio Printmaking was published by A & C Black in 2008 and in 2011 he was commissioned by the law firm T V Edwards to paint a large-scale, external mural on the side of their offices at 33 Mile End Road, London E1 near the site of the 2012 Olympics. He was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers in 2002 and at the AGM in 2013 was elected its President (PRE).
