John Wilson An Unexpected Twist 6th - 28th October
John Wilson ‘An Unexpected Twist’ - New Paintings For artist, John Wilson, 1979 was a momentous year. He suffered a catastrophic stroke which paralysed his right arm. With extensive physiotherapy and sheer determination he fought back to re-establish himself as a professional artist based in Nairn, working mainly in acrylic and gouache on paper. He still has restricted use of his right arm and this has influenced the way he paints – concentrating on smaller, detailed areas and patterns rather than broad sweeps of colour, and there is an irony in his choice of acrobats as a favourite motif as they symbolise agility and freedom of movement. His compositions often feature geometric constructions and a dominant totemic plinth which act as a foil to more naturalistic birds and wildlife or a rhythmic acrobat. Showing in this exhibition alongside some 20 paintings by John Wilson will be stone sculptures from Zimbabwe.
