Edward C MacMillan Homeland to Mainland

Edward C MacMillan Homeland to Mainland Edward C MacMillan is one of Inverness’ most well-known artists. As proprietor of the most northerly specialist, fine art materials shop in Scotland, Artmedia in Inverness, he has been well placed to experiment with various media and watercolour paints to create lively and impressive paintings, drawing on his original training at Gray’s School of Art. The title of the show, ‘Homeland to Mainland’ refers to the dual inspiration for the show. His paintings are evocative of Harris in the Outer Hebrides, home to his ancestors and also of the bustle of city life in Inverness. Edwards says: “Both my parents were from South Harris and I have always been inspired by the diverse landscape. I am inspired by the sense of space, colour, texture, and in particular, the rock formations which are a strong feature of my work. I initially draw the subject matter ‘en plein air’ and then will work up a more detailed drawing in the studio in preparation for the painting. I paint in watercolour and use a series of washes and glazes to build up vibrant colour. For this show in the Castle Gallery I have produced a series of paintings based on my personal connections with Harris and Inverness.” In recent years he has exhibited with the RWS in London and SWA in Edinburgh and is now delighted to be hosting a solo show at the Castle Gallery, the foremost commercial exhibition venue in Inverness.
