Oil Paintings inspired by the Outer Hebrides As far back as Vega can remember she has always wanted to be an artist and throughout her life she has lived and worked as one. Vega submitted her portfolio and was accepted to Leeds University and after four years of experimental studio work coupled with intensive theoretical study received a BA (Hons) in Fine Art. During the 1980’s and early 1990’s Vega produced figurative work, concentrating on positive images of women of all ages and race and their role in society and this was the impetus behind her subsequent sketching and painting travels in Africa, Indonesia, France, Spain and Ireland. After a break of many years, Vega returns to figurative work for this show. The mid 1990’s saw her move to the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, where she now lives and works. This starkly beautiful island has greatly inspired her paintings; a place where the weather can be a challenge to the crofting way of life but the glorious sunsets and clean, crisp air provides ample compensation.

The impressive diptych of two 1m x 1m paintings entitled ‘Preliminaries’ has been worked up from eariler charcoal sketches and smaller oil studies. For Vega, painting is a process that requires a great deal of thought and planning. charcoal on paper
