Letter from the Chairman 2011~2012 As we start 2012, I am very optimistic about the future. Maybe I am still basking in the glow of the magical holiday season and my own new year’s resolutions, but people in our community seem much more spirited, joyful and hopeful. Let’s use this as a springboard to continue to challenge ourselves to help our businesses thrive and our Chamber grow. On a personal level, thank you for the support and trust you have placed in me to chair the Chamber board. I have had the pleasure of getting to know many of you and the Chamber staff at an even deeper level over the past six months. This Chamber team works tirelessly to provide the very best experiences for the business community and the Town. Their vision and desire to excel is impressive Linda Watson, Chairman and I am confident that 2012 will be another year of innovation and success. Castle Rock Chamber Castle Rock Chamber
Consider the great partnerships that have been forged over the past months…partnerships that we believe will offer added value to you and the community. Bringing Webster University’s Master’s program to Castle Rock is an incredible opportunity for our business owners, their employees and Castle Rock residents to obtain a graduate degree close to home and conveniently at the Chamber’s office. With input from the community, the Chamber is also starting a new venture with the Healthy Living Expo. For the first time, we are planning a local event that will showcase the benefits of living, working and playing in Castle Rock and Colorado. This will be a day to show off the incredible amenities right at our door steps while profiling the businesses that make this community such a desirable place to live and work. Our Business Boot Camp continues to thrive, providing our small- to medium-sized businesses with mentoring, tools, success strategies and consultations that we believe will increase revenue, workforce numbers and community impact. And the Chamber is expanding its reach outside the community through destination trips and partnerships with the Douglas County Business Alliance and the Southern Colorado Business Partnership. Reaching out to others for new ideas, creating effective partnerships, looking for innovative ways to be meaningful and relevant is what this Chamber does best. But none of this could happen without you, your input and involvement. On behalf of the Chamber Board of Directors, please accept our sincere thanks for your support and commitment. With your enthusiasm, energy and passion, 2012 will be a year filled with promise. We will work tirelessly to bring you the most value for your investment and opportunities to enrich your business through your partnership with the Chamber.

The December session of the Chamber’s Business Boot Camp was the first of two addressing financial monitoring. Instructor Mike Tafoya, CEO Coach at Estrada Strategies - DTC, pointed out that financial reports are the “steering wheel” of the business. Numbers tell the real story about the performance and condition of a company. The participants focused on the Income Statement (measuring the efficiency of the operation over time) and the Balance Sheet (measuring the company’s financial health at a moment in time). “Flying blind” while running a business is a recipe for failure. However, systematic monitoring of the details in these reports can provide early warning and guidance so the owner can keep the company on course. The January session will continue on this track and cover the Cash Flow Statement and various financial performance ratios. This is a series of Business Boot Camp training highlights by Brian Leugs, President of Business Communications Support, Boot Camp Mentor and Castle Rock Chamber Member. Keep abreast of training information being imparted each month by Boot Camp instructor, Mike Tafoya, of Estrada Strategies-DTC. This is a Castle Rock Chamber-sponsored program for local businesses. The ACC Foundation embarked upon its first-ever comprehensive fundraising campaign this fall to celebrate. The “45 in 45” initiative seeks to raise $45,000 in unrestricted funds over the course of a 45-week giving period. The “45 in 45” initiative will help support students while strengthening Arapahoe Community College’s vision to be the leader in community college education in Colorado. Arapahoe Community College’s Equality Club Selected Receives National Award Arapahoe Community College’s Equality Club has been selected as the recipient of one of three prestigious national awards in the first annual Out in the Silence Award for Youth Activism recognition program, as announced on Saturday, Dec. 10. The Equality Club was selected to receive the “New Group Award” and will be awarded a $500 cash prize. The Out in the Silence Award for Youth Activism program also bestowed a “Grand Prize” and an “Impact Award” in its inaugural year of operation. During the 2011 fall semester, the Equality Club sponsored several on-campus events in support of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) persons, including National Coming Out Day on Oct. 11. The Equality Club also facilitated two separate Safe Zone programs this semester in an effort to establish support, safety and a welcoming environment for LGBT persons within the ACC campus community. The Out in the Silence Award for Youth Activism program was established by Emmy-award winning directors Dean Hamer and Joe Wilson, along with the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), to highlight and honor the courageous young people who are doing groundbreaking and inspiring work in the movement for change. Hamer and Wilson directed and produced “Out in the Silence”, a 2009 documentary film about confronting homophobia and the limitations of religion, tradition and the status quo in small-town America. In other ACC Equality Club news, current organization president, Andy Blevins, will spend the 2012 spring semester in Washington, D.C., fulfilling an internship at the White House in the Office of the First Lady. HCA-HealthONE® Responds to Community Need for Behavioral Healthcare Denver-based regional hospital system plans new adult psychiatric inpatient unit HCA-HealthONE, LLC announced plans for expansion of its regional network of care to include behavioral health services. Construction will begin at The Medical Center of Aurora North Campus (I-225 & 6th Ave., 700 Potomac St., Aurora) early spring of 2012 with an anticipated open date of fall 2012. Due to state budget cuts in recent years, mental health services have lost millions of dollars, making it difficult for patients to obtain much-needed care. Public and private psychiatric hospitals or specialized units have closed leaving Colorado at a loss, ranking the state 50th in the nation in terms of psychiatric beds per capita. One out of every four Americans experiences a diagnosable mental illness or substance abuse every year. Mental illnesses are more common than cancer, diabetes or heart disease and can affect persons of any age, race, religion or income. For more information on HealthONE behavioral health services and to track construction progress, visit www.HealthONEcares.com. Congratulations to the community of Castle Rock who has lost over 4,000 lbs and are getting healthy this last year. Over 15 Castle Rock Chamber members lost a total of over 300 lbs. with Metabolic Research Center since March after balancing hormone related weight issues. Hormone imbalances are associated with rapid weight gain, thickened waist lines, disease and increased cravings for sugar and carbohydrates. MRC is the leading weight loss and hormone imbalance detection experts to get to the root of weight gain. The staff at MRC are fun and professional motivating coaches, helping their clients safely lose 2-7 pounds per week. Chamber members receive 1/3 off their enrollment, which includes a hormone detection test. Call Shayla at MRC today for a FREE CONSULTATION 720-7336882. Castle Rock Chamber Business Voice

TOWN & COUNTY In the News
New Year brings new home for County Elections Operations Starting the week of January 3, 2012, Douglas County Elections Operations will open for business in a new location, 125 Stephanie Place, in Castle Rock. The new location will accommodate the needed consolidation of Elections Division staff, as well as Elections Operations, into one location – currently managed in three different locations in Castle Rock. “We outgrew our space,” said Jack Arrowsmith, Douglas County Clerk and Recorder. “With nearly 80 percent of Douglas County voters registered for the permanent mail-in ballot, a larger space was needed to receive, process, tabulate ballots and accommodate the post-election, state-mandated ballot storage – all of which exceeded our current space.” The new location will house Elections staff, mail-in ballot processing (receipt of ballots, processing, and scanning in preparation for Election-night tabulation), state-mandated ballot storage, election judge training, improved public observation of the process, election equipment storage, staging for polling sites, and dock space to facilitate movement of large equipment and ballots. For information about the Douglas County Elections Division, please visit douglasvotes.com
The Town of Castle Rock 2012 Budget Five major priorities will drive the Town’s 2012 budget: securing long-term water, completing the North Meadows Extension, providing outstanding public health and safety services, creating jobs/expanding the tax base and developing Philip S. Miller Park. The budget calls for no tax increases of any kind. That means that the owner of a $300,000 house still will only pay about $40, or up to 2.3 percent of their total property tax bill, to the Town in 2012 for the wide range of services that it provides. The budget includes $141.3 million in expenditures and $101 million in revenues. The planned use of reserves – mostly for water projects and the North Meadows Extension – will offset that difference. Property taxes are expected to make up only about $1 million, or less than 1 percent, of the Town’s total 2012 revenues. Among the major projects proposed for 2012: $8.86 million for the Plum Creek Water Purification Facility $2.75 million for vehicle purchases $620,000 for traffic signals, including three new signals

AMBASSADOR OF THE MONTH AMBASSADORS PAGE The Ambassador Program is sponsored this month by:
Ray Navarro I have lived in Castle Rock for 2 and 1/2 Years. I moved to Castle Rock from Parker where I lived for 17 years. I joined the Castle Rock Chamber shortly after retiring from the United States Army where I served 22 years as a Biomedical Engineer. I joined the Chamber with my new business in the insurance industry which I retired from in July 2010. My chamber membership was extremely beneficial to my business. I became an Ambassador shortly after becoming a Chamber member. It quickly became apparent that serving as an Ambassador allowed me to learn about businesses and meet new business people through Ribbon Cutting Ceremonies, Business After Hours, New Member Receptions, Chamber Leads Groups and other Chambersponsored events. After retiring from the insurance industry, I wanted to stay involved with the Chamber and community so I have continued as an Ambassador. It is a great group of professionals that have become like an extended family. I enjoy the closeness of the community you don't experience in large city environments. In retirement, I enjoy travel, Snow Skiing and Motorcycling. Congratulations Ray! Thank You for your continuous commitment to the Chamber.

CREATING LEADERS
Leadership Douglas County
December’s Class Topics: Economic Development and Transportation Day The Leadership Douglas County class met on December 7th to learn about the issues and hot topics regarding economic development and transportation in Douglas County. The day was hosted by the City of Lone Tree at their new Lone Tree Arts Center, a facility that will present critically-acclaimed national performing artists and will launch new relationships with an impressive group of Colorado’s professional arts companies by inviting them to perform there. The Lone Tree Arts Center is the first publicly financed professional arts facility in the South Metro Denver Area. The day began with Pam Schenck Kelly, Park Meadows Senior Property Manager, who spoke about the anatomy of a lifestyle regional mall. History, partnerships, philanthropy and supporting the community were among the topics that she covered. Pam stated that “if you believe in your projects and the core values of your organization are successful, you will build for the future regardless of the current economic time”. This discussion was a perfect segway for Douglas County’s economic development and retention leaders. “After today’s session on transportation and economic development, I realized how important all business and facilities are to our community, and subsequently our tax dollars”, stated class participant Kay Dry of CH2M HILL.
information on the Leadership Douglas County program, please call Melissa Moroni at (303) 688-4597 or email melissa@castlerock.org.
Leadership Douglas County would like to acknowledge Patron Sponsors: The City of Lone Tree and Douglas County Government and also their Program Sponsors: Black Hills Energy, BreakThroughs, Inc., Cherokee Ranch and Castle Foundation, Douglas County Libraries, FirstBank of Douglas County, Highlands Ranch Metro District, South Metro Fire and Rescue Authority, Town of Castle Rock, Wells Fargo Bank, and the Chambers of Commerce of Castle Rock, Castle Pines, Highlands Ranch, Lone Tree and Parker.
The last segment of the day took place at Centennial Airport, the 3rd busiest general aviation airport in the US, with nearly one billion dollars in economic impact. The tie in of the new Lone Tree Arts Center and Centennial Airport, along with a developer’s presentation and economic development experts was excellent! The quality of speakers and influential decision makers sharing their time with us was impressive. They are engaging and shared relevant information with passion. The Leadership Douglas County class continues to explore issues and organizations that influence the future of our community. The topic for January’s Leadership Class is government and social services. For more

Starting Jan. 3rd, the service will be available 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and on holidays except the observances of New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. The taxi service started this year, after the Town bus service was eliminated. The Town pays a maximum of $10 per trip, and passengers must pay charges in excess of that amount. Administrators are projecting that a total of 1,800 taxi rides will be given by the year’s end – 70 percent to work, 20 percent for shopping and 10 percent for medical trips. Program participants must register for the service. Eighty-one people have registered to date. Douglas County Libraries Board of Directors Reconfirms Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Volunteers from Douglas County gathered at the November meeting of the Douglas County Libraries Board of Directors for an important reconfirmation. An ESGR Statement of Support was presented for signature by the Board’s President, Amy Hunt. Although Douglas County Libraries had previously signed a Statement of Support in 2009, the Board, together with Director Jamie LaRue, considered the ESGR Statement of Support an important affirmation of the organization’s mission and policies. In addition to the Board members and Director, Library branch managers and senior staff; Douglas County Sheriff David Weaver and Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce President and CEO, Pam Ridler, were also present to show strong support.
