LETTER FROM OUR CEO—PAM RIDLER, CCE I’m amazed, I can’t believe that I’m writing my 20th yearend message to all of you. So many things that I could reflect on that have transpired throughout the years. Yes, Castle Rock looks very different than it did when I moved here to take over the Chamber in 1998, we’ve gained so many amenities like a local hospital, higher education facilities, new and expanded parks, increased shopping opportunities, entertainment and many other business services that we no longer need to leave our community for, we have them all here. But I think what I really am grateful for are the people who have graced our business community in giving of their time and passion to make Castle Rock a wonderful and exciting place to live and work. So to those of you who look forward to what we can be and give of your wisdom, time and passion to work together for the betterment of others, thank you. I believe it’s important to contemplate on what has transpired throughout the last year. Reflection helps me look forward to the future and I believe self-improvement is a practice that we all should continue to work towards. Under the leadership of our chairman, Mark Michael we have made some major leaps for long and short-term return on our investments. We were successful in receiving accreditation from the US Chamber of Commerce as the only 4-Star Chamber in the state of Colorado last March. We’ve expanded our efforts in advocating to government on behalf of business and educating chamber members and the public through our Government Interest Committee and our partnership with the Douglas County Business Alliance. The creation of the Talent Pipeline Douglas County multi-industry collaborative which engages with community members and local industry to facilitate partnership and deliver workforce solutions. In addition, we created an overall new organizational branding initiative.

The Chamber Board of Directors, other volunteer leadership and Chamber staff will be reviewing and strategizing on future short and long-term goals and use strategic methods to move the Castle Rock Chamber and the newly formed Chamber Foundation forward with the goal of continual improvement. I truly look forward to this process at the end of January. Our Chamber exists for the success of your business. It’s only through the actions and support of our members that our Chamber has been successful in the past and will continue to be successful in 2019. This year will bring plenty of excitement and challenges for all of us. I encourage you to be a part of the success of our business community and your chamber, contact us so that we can help connect you with a program or event of an area of interest to you. To learn more or to get involved, please feel free to contact me at Pam@castlerock.org.

EXCELERATE BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM Biz Builder: Cyber Security and Protecting Your Business Thursday, January 17th Time: 11 AM to 1 PM Castle Rock Chamber

This seminar is going to cover critical topics that will help protect your business from future cyber attacks

Instructor: Rick Tillery, Spartan Corp

·

Cyber Security and Protecting Your Business More often than not, the news we hear about data breaches involve large businesses and global organizations. This creates a false belief that it is only the big companies that are at risk of being attacked. A recent study found that of all cyber attacks in 2018, 58% were targeted at small to medium size businesses. While the ultimate reward may not be as great, cybercriminals go after SMBs because of the simplicity.

· · ·

Why do hackers target small/medium size businesses Types of cyber attacks Cost efficient methods to prevent cyber attacks Best practices to implement for small and medium size businesses

OUTSTANDING AMBASSADORS

Congratulations to Ambassador of the Year, Jenny joined the Chamber in 2016 and became an Ambassador in Jenny Young! 2017.  As a new resident in Colorado, the Chamber provided a fantastic way to meet people, make connections, and get involved in the community.  Jenny had a private massage practice in Ohio for eight years prior to moving to Castle Rock.  She specializes in trigger point therapy, myofascial release, lymphatic drainage, and advanced work with the brain and nervous system using CranioSacral Therapy techniques for concussions, brain injuries, nervous system disorders, and auto-immune related diseases.  What do you like best about being an Ambassador?

The Ambassadors of the Castle Rock Chamber are a super-great group of individuals.  I am appreciative of the warm welcome and friendships that I am building.  I am honoured to be part of this team who believe in our Town, establish authentic relationships with new businesses, foster old relationships, and take a genuine interest in the growth of our Town.   CONGRATULATIONS, AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR OUTSTANDING COMMITTEMENT AND DEDICATION TO THE CASTLE ROCK CHAMBER!

Congratulations to Paula Thielen, our November Ambassador of the month! Paula Thielen has lived in and loved Castle Rock for almost four years. She feels that Castle Rock is a “quintessential” Americana city with a home-town community vibe. Paula could not wait to get involved in the community of Castle Rock and soon realized the quickest way was to be active in the Chamber of Commerce. She has been a member for three years and has been an Ambassador since May 2018. Paula knows, from experience, the quickest way to develop and grow your business is through networking. The Chamber provides ample opportunity to do just that through programs such as Business over Breakfast and Business after Hours each month. Being active in the Chamber where the members want every business owner to be successful is the best way to grow your business and Castle Rock.

Paula was named the Ambassador of the Month for November 2018 and also, the Ambassador for the fourth quarter of 2018. Paula Thielen is an “Insurance Personal Shopper” who specializes in matching insurance needs and affordable pricing in a timely manner. Paula is driven by her personal work adage: “Educate-Protect-Serve”. She feels insurance education is a critical part of protecting her clients and allowing them to make an informed decision to protect their family and the things they love. Paula is licensed in the state of Colorado to facilitate the need with “Property, Casualty, Life and Health” insurance.

Before Insurance, Paula has worked in various corporate administrative management positions for over 25 years across the United States. She has been a Real Estate Broker, a Hair , relatable flair. Her other passions include photography, creative writing and hiking. She is Head Trustee for the Douglas County Elks Lodge #2873 and is active in community fundraising. CONGRATULATIONS, AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR OUTSTANDING COMMITTEMENT AND DEDICATION TO THE CASTLE ROCK CHAMBER!

LEADERSHIP DOUGLAS COUNTY Thank you to our November and December Venue and Meal Sponsors: Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Chic-filA of Castle Rock, Sky Ridge Medical Center, and Wind Crest Retirement Center “Having the opportunity to learn from such a variety of government leaders in our community created a much fuller picture of the county. It’s encouraging to hear how our communities are partnering to improve the lives of citizens.” Jolee Jones, Director, Stone Canyon Outdoor EdVentures

In November, the class of 2019 worked in small groups on their project selection and plan for moving forward. Pictured at Wind Crest Retirement Center. The LDC Class of 2019 spent November and December learning about the factors that impact the mental and physical health and wellbeing of our community and December exploring opportunities for civic engagement. At November’s session, LDC class members learned about important issues within healthcare, including the opioid epidemic, social determinants of health, senior issues and social services within Douglas County. Participants also learned more about Douglas County’s largest day of giving in December, Colorado Gives Day, from the Douglas County Community Foundation. In December, through tours, presentations and expert panelists, the class received a behind-thescenes look at Colorado’s 18th judicial district court and met with elected officials and municipal leaders. The class gained a better understanding of civic engagement and government at the local, county, and state level to help promote the empowerment of people, sustaining healthy communities, and enriching our quality of life. Photos from these recent classes can be viewed on the LDC Facebook page: https:// www.facebook.com/leadershipdouglascounty/

LDC participants are receiving strong professional development training this year on building effective teams, strategic planning, communication and catalytic leadership—skills that they can take back to their workplace to make them more effective leaders and team members. Each class day revolves around a professional development session. In December, the topic was “Difficult Conversations” with Kon Apostolopoulos, of Fresh Biz Solutions. November’s class was spent with Scotty Martin of ReVision Inc., working through the decision-making process for the class project. Considering LDC for yourself or referring a colleague? If you are interested in applying to Leadership Douglas County in 2019-2020 and would like to preview the program by observing a class day, there are a limited number of spots available on the first Wednesday of each month for the remainder of this year, February through June. Please let us know by calling 720-440-3726 and/or emailing info at leadershipdouglascounty.com. The new program year begins in September each year. Established by the Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce in 1999, Leadership Douglas County is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, program designed to broaden participant knowledge of the community and enhance leadership skills, while increasing the strength and effectiveness of our leaders. LDC gratefully acknowledges our valued sponsors who make Leadership Douglas County possible:
