Second time around--the Castle Rock Chamber will be facilitating the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) again this year. A groundbreaking program that teaches high school students how to launch and run their own real businesses will begin in October. Only 20 students will be accepted into this prestigious program. Applications are now available, so if you know of kids that you think would benefit, send them our way. www.castlerock.org/yea. Chamber has a “Grape Thing Going” here at the 10th Annual Castle Rock WineFest! In celebrating ten years in the making, it was definitely “Time For Wine” at the year’s WineFest. Guests of the outdoor wine tasting event were offered more than two dozen wineries and over 180 varietials of Colorado wine. The majestic valleys of Colorado's Rocky Mountains are blessed with warm days, cool nights and low humidity — perfect conditions for the cultivation of wine grapes with the complex character and chemistry required to produce award-winning wines. The word that Colorado is producing some really great tasting wine is getting around. Our preliminary numbers are indicating that we are up on our ticket sales over last year by 22.7%. And we surpassed our best year (2010) sales by 1.7%. Hats, Hats, and more Hats! It was the year for hats. Temperatures were warm and breezy at times throughout the day, but guests were prepared and ’stylin’ with a wide variety of hats on display. Whether you wore a fedora, cowboy, sun or straw hat you were definitely part of the “IN” crowd at the WineFest. Guests enjoyed live entertainment from two amazingly talented bands. The day opened with a Castle Rock based band. The John Saunders Band captured the combination of the laid back rhythms of Jack Johnson and solid drive of Big Head Todd and the Monsters, creating a unique sound they call “The Colorado Groove”. The party continued well into the evening with Waitin’ On Ray… this 6 piece band played those eclectic songs of yesterday and today with a flavor all their own and the crowd was apparently feeling it. At times you could see festival goers dancing and grooving alongside each other. For the more serious wine aficionados, wine seminars and cooking demonstrations were offered on the Home Depot pavilion. Fabulous food trucks and multiple Culinary, Lifestyle, and Artisan Vendors truly meant there was something for everyone at this year’s Castle Rock WineFest. Save the date for next year’s Castle Rock WineFest on July 19, 2014. One guest blogged of her experiences at the WineFest. Posted by D' Vine Wine Time in WINE TASTING: I can honestly say…..not one wine I tried was “bad” or “un-drinkable”. Colorado winemakers are not messing around with odd varietals or cheap drinking wines. Their wine is quality and most of the winemakers I met are focusing on varietals that grow well in the Palisades area outside of Grand Junction, CO ~ such as Pinot Grigio, Viognier and Riesling. A few stand outs for me were Allis Ranch Winery, Creekside Cellars and Desert Moon Vineyards. Allis Ranch Winery is located in Sedalia, CO. Mainly producing Rhone Style wines; they are a boutique winery focusing on small-lot vinification to create focused, hand-crafted wines. The Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce recently announced its July recipient for Business of the Month — Pegasus Restaurant. Owners John and Janie De Lay have been members of the Chamber for nearly 24 years. John Delay was named business person of the year in 2009. Pegasus Michael Likens, Chairman of the Board, proudly presents the Business of the Month award to John celebrates it’s 25th summer in Castle De Lay as Chamber staff and ambassadors show their support. Rock and 15 years at its current location on 313 Jerry Street. Pegasus serves Mexican, American and Greek food. It was voted the Best Breakfast and lunch in Castle Rock by the Colorado Community Newspaper. Ambassador of the Month-Brock Goodwin Brock Goodwin, along with his wife Lisa and their two children Gabrielle and Blake, have been residents of Castle Rock since 2000. Brock has been involved in the Chamber’s Ambassador program since 2002. He has been elected twice as Chair of the Ambassadors, served as an Advisory Member to the Ambassadors, and was voted Ambassador of the Year in 2005. Brock Goodwin Mutual of Omaha

Castle Rock Police, Project Recycle team up to collect bicycles for children in need-The Castle Rock Police Department's Bike Patrol Unit is teaming up with Project ReCycle, a Douglas County-based nonprofit program, for a bicycle collection event on Saturday, Aug. 17. Bikes in any condition can be dropped off between 9 and 11 am at Festival Park. Project ReCycle volunteers then take the bikes, repair them, and then get them to children in need throughout Colorado. The program enables the uninsured and underinsured residents of the County a discount of five to 50 percent on dental care and 20 percent on orthodontics when working with participating dentists or specialists. Read more http:// www.castlerock.org/chamber_news1.htm Fire restrictions removed in unincorporated Douglas County- The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office lifted the temporary fire restriction order for all areas of unincorporated Douglas County, yet will continue to closely monitor the fire danger in the County and make appropriate adjustments. Recent rainfall and cooler temperatures have reduced the danger of wildfire, however, the Sheriff encourages individuals to be vigilant, as the danger of fire is always present. While many individuals will continue to enjoy the mountains and parks through the remainder of the season, they should be reminded to use caution when starting and extinguishing campfires, disposing of lighted cigarettes, and other activities that involve the use of fire or sparks as warm and windy days can quickly lower the fuel moisture content of trees and grasses, making them susceptible to ignition. Partnership of Douglas County Governments Launches Senior Initiative Outreach Effort-Countywide Survey and Listening Tour are offered to facilitate input. For Douglas County residents aged 60 and older, their local governments are all ears. The County is experiencing the nation’s most dramatic percentage of population growth in adults aged 60 and older. According to the State Demography Office, by 2030 it is estimated that one in four residents of Douglas County will be age 60 or older – approximately 24% of the County’s population. To plan for this population shift and their needs, The Partnership of Douglas County Governments — a collaborative organization whose members are Castle Pines, Castle Rock, Douglas County, Douglas County Libraries, Douglas County School District, Highlands Ranch Metro District, Larkspur, Lone Tree, and Parker — established the Senior Initiative. Parade starts on the south end of Town starting at 9 am, followed by the traditional BBQ to benefit the Douglas County High School Huskies at the Castle Rock Fire Department at 300 N. Perry Street.
