The Douglas County Job Fair aims to connect talented job seekers with the best Douglas County-based companies and the Healthy Living Expo is the largest expo focused on living, working and playing in Colorado. New this year, the Job Fair will provide job seekers an opportunity to interact with Douglas County companies seeking to grow their workforce. What I’m thankful for As I write my 17th year-end message to all of you as Chamber members, I believe it’s important to reflect on what has transpired throughout the last year, which for me has been difficult due to family loss. Even though it’s tough to realize I won’t be able to actually be with those that have passed in my family, I am thankful they were an important part of my life for such a very long me.
Reflec on helps me look forward to the future and I believe self-improvement is a prac ce that we all should work towards. By being mindful about those around me, showing them gra tude and love helps me deal with my loss. So here’s two powerful words that are dominant in my thoughts and prayers. My hope is that you'll consider sprinkling them throughout your day. GRATITUDE – I like to build an acronym to help me remember and digest, so here it is. G—rateful to have the support of family, friends, coworkers and our volunteers R—espec<ul of others for their differences and to work towards earning their trust A—ccept and encourage varied ideas, solu ons, beliefs and opportuni es T—ime to reflect on my life and work on my personal growth I—nspired by what I've seen my outstanding staff accomplish and to share in their successes T—ake inventory and improve upon my rela onships, health and work habits U—nderstand and acknowledge what a gi= life is and that life is a journey which should be enjoyed D—etermined to posi vely contribute, support and foster to our vibrant community E—agar to take on new ventures and bigger challenges in the New Year I BELIEVE we all must act as an ac ve par cipant in the nurturing and crea on of our future and give ourselves the permission to succeed.

Ambassador of the Year—Joe Blakely Joe Blakely became an ambassador with the Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce in 2014 and has really enjoyed the addi onal opportuni es it gives him to connect with the community and meet new people. Being an ambassador at the Chamber also allows Joe to be an ambassador for Kaiser PerJoe Blakely manente in the community. Kaiser Permanente This is important, because many people s ll don't realize they can purchase Kaiser Permanente coverage as an individual and don't have to get it through an employer. Now that Kaiser Permanente has a medical office in Castle Rock and our Specialty office in Lone Tree, Kaiser Permanente is more convenient than ever. When Joe and his wife Angie moved to Castle Rock in 1988, he knew the town was very special and wanted to become more involved in the community. He had a health insurance agency in town for many years and was a member of the Chamber because of the opportuni es it gave him to meet people he could help with their health insurance needs. “We especially liked the Starligh)ng event every November, and had built up quite a collec)on of the Christmas ornaments since they started offering them in 1992. I decided to make a case to display them for my wife for Valen)ne's day one year. That was when I discovered we were missing the ornament from 1998, which was Christ's Episcopal Church. The Chamber let me know that they had sold out of that par)cular ornament since the church had used it as a fund
-raiser. Thus began my quest for the next few years, where I would give people my contact informa)on at garage sales and ask them to check their Christmas ornaments for the one I was missing. It only took about 3 years before a very kind woman called me to inform me that she had the ornament I was missing. She let me know that the money I paid for the ornament would go to the homeless shelter and she even called me later on to share how many pairs of socks and underwear she was able to purchase. It really made me feel good to know that the Chamber touched people in the community without even being directly involved. ADer such a long search for the ornament, I was finally able to fill the empty space in the display cabinet. My only concern is that I only have six more spaces in the case and then I will have to make a new one. I guess that is the beFer problem to have.” Joe concludes by saying, “I am truly honored to be Ambassador of the Year because I know everyone on the team works so hard to make the Castle Rock Chamber a beFer value for our members. They are an amazing group of individuals and everyone of them deserves this recogni)on. I look forward to seeing you at a Chamber event in the near future.”

Members for more than twenty-five years, they began as Gene's Radiator when Gene repaired radiators in a shed near their home in the early 1970's; next was rental space on Caprice. In 1985 a new three bay building was opened at the current 215 Malibu address and the business became Gene's Auto Repair. Exhaust services were added in the 1990's and in 2015 an expansion into a second three bay building. Students in Business Planning Process The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!), an innova ve program of the Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce that guides students through the process of star ng their own, real business, announces local business mentors for this year’s YEA! Class being held at ConneXion Spot in Castle Rock. Once the students iden fy their business idea, YEA! pairs each student business with an appropriate mentor. This business expert helps the students to fine-tune their concept, write a business plan and iden fy their target audience. The upcoming January 6, 2016, Leadership Class will focus on Transporta on, Economic Development, and Masterplan, and will include master plan presenta ons from the public sector, beginning the day with a master plan presenta on, prior to moving to the Charles Schwab campus in the a=ernoon for an economic development discussion and then conclude with a transporta on panel at Centennial airport.

Town & County News Plans for Downtown park improvements move forward - Town Council recently approved a plan that would start the final steps for the park improvements. With Council’s recent approval of the final design concepts and funding approval as part of the 2016 Budget, the last permi[ng and construc on documents can begin to take shape. Over the next several months, Design Workshop – the design consultant for the project – will lead a team of highly-qualified architects and engineers to develop construc on drawings suitable for the contractor-bidding process. The proposed $5 million project will have mul ple poten al funding sources including several conserva on trust funds, allotments from the Parks and Recrea on Capital Fund and Downtown Development Authority TIF sales and property tax funding mechanism. Miller Park and Ridgeline Open Space and will create a con nuous 17-mile na ve surface trail that will bring together more than 650 acres in park space. This project was a team effort. Town Council approved the contract earlier this year, recognizing the importance of trail connec vity to the en re community. Designing and building the project this year helped save the Town more than $58,000 in materials and labor. Plus, developer Na onal Covenant Proper es donated 2 acres of land for the bridge loca on, and the builder, DR Horton, will help with grading for the project. The $702,750-project will be funded through the annual trail construc on alloca on from the Transporta on Fund and remaining unexpended funds from the 2014 Budget for the Ridge Road and Crowfoot Valley Road/Founders Parkway sidepath project. New applica)on process makes planning an event in Castle Rock easier—Each year, the Town of Castle Rock is excited to host hundreds of special events – everything from large-scale signature occasions like the Castle Rock Chamber’s WineFest and ArtFest, to community-based fes vals and races. Those who plan these fun events know there’s a lot of logis cs to coordinate. The Town in 2016 has resolved to make that process easier through a new online special event permit applica on. Events or organized ac vi es for 75 people or more that involve street closures, or approval from mul ple Town departments such as use of alcohol, on-site cooking, food sales or large-scale temporary structures, will be reviewed through this process. The process begins with an applica on. Visit www.CRgov.com/SpecialEvents. The deadline for events held in 2016 is Jan. 15, 2016. For 2017 events, the applica on will be available online in September 2016. The Town’s new Special Events Division is available to help event coordinators with this applica on process. From trails perfect for running, to a charming Downtown fit for a street fes val, to new event facili es at Philip S. Miller Park, Castle Rock has a lot to offer, and it’s the goal of this division to help coordinators plan successful events. The Special Events Division provides a single point of contact for those interested in hos ng an event. It oversees all aspects of events that use public property, including streets and facili es.
