CEO Focus

Pam Ridler, CCE Castle Rock Chamber President/CEO

Castle Rock is #4! Do you ever wonder why Castle Rock continues to be featured in numerous national publications as being a top community? Could it be a fluke or is it because many good people have worked hard for many years to plan our destiny? I think it’s due to our partners both public and private entities who work together and have a shared vision to move Castle Rock forward. It takes diligent leadership and a willingness to collaborate with others. That’s exactly the purpose of the Castle Rock Economic Partnership (CREP) which was created in 2008 by the Town, Chamber, Economic Development Council and the Downtown Alliance. These founding entities continue to work together on significant economic projects and initiatives with the belief that success requires collaboration and a streamlining of resources, all important principles of CREP. This continued partnership has identified Castle Rock as a leader in the state in economic development.

Castle Rock’s most recent recognition as a great place to live by MONEY magazine who set out to find the nation’s top small cities with populations between 50,000 and 300,000 and focused on local economy, housing market, schools and healthcare—more than 50 factors in all. They then sent reporters to our fair community including 34 other top scoring places, looking for a sense of community and other intangibles. Castle Rock is #4! and the only Colorado community in the top 12. How’s our state doing? Last week the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment reported the state lost 700 jobs during the month of August. According to Gary Horvath, Colorado researcher with Labor Market Information Group stated this abrupt "downturn" is not supported by other data or the busin ess and economic activity on the street. It is most likely an anomaly or a glitch in the labor estimates. Through the first eight months of 2014 the average wage and salary employment for Colorado is 64,800 greater than the same period last year. The Professional Business Services and Tourism Supersectors were the leaders in jobs added. The state is on track to add 70,000 jobs this year. For more details check out the www.cber.co analysis, 2014 Review of Colorado Economy – Analysis for First Eight Months of 2014. GIC puts out the call—The Chamber’s Government Issues Committee is adding additional members to assist the board of directors in communicating a proactive voice and advocating for the business community regarding local governmental issues. If you have interest in economic initiatives which contribute to the quality of life for business owners and residents of Castle Rock, contact me for more information at pam@castlerock.org or 303-688-4597.

Outstanding Ambassadors Recognized For the last seventeen years, I have worked as a Real Estate Assistant in the community alongside my husband, Tom Calhoun, who is a realtor with RE/MAX Alliance. I joined the Chamber in June of 2011 and became an Ambassador in February of 2012. Joining the Chamber has proven to be the best way to get involved in the community. By becoming a member of the Chamber, I have greatly broadened my friendships and business connections. I have met so many wonderful people who live and work in this beautiful town and I am honored to serve the residents. The Castle Rock Chamber has so many dedicated Ambassadors, that being awarded Ambassador of the Month is amazing. I am blessed to have this recognition and thank you to the Chamber for this opportunity! Melanie Calhoun When I’m not assisting Tom with Real Estate or RE/MAX Alliance- Team Calhoun participating as an Ambassador, time with family and friends is a priority. When the opportunity arises, I enjoy dancing, playing piano, walking our 3 chihuahuas, hiking and traveling. Thank you Melanie, for all you do to support and promote the Castle Rock Chamber. We greatly appreciate and applaud your outstanding efforts! Michael’s affiliation with the Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce began more than nine years ago—within a month of moving his family and business here from out of state. “My company has grown steadily since that time, thanks in large part to the opportunities the Chamber offered to be active in the organization and the community,” says Michael. In addition to serving as an Ambassador, Michael is a Board Member and past Chairman of the Board. Through the years, Michael also has contributed his time, organizational skills, and creative talents to numerous Chamber committees and event planning groups. Michael is the founder of Gopixel, a full-service Castle Rock-based website, graphics, and logo Michael Likens design company serving clients in Douglas County and gopixel design throughout the Front Range. As the creative genius behind studios, inc. Gopixel, Michael has branded and rebranded countless local companies with his fresh, insightful design and social marketing strategies. For more about Gopixel, and to see samples of Michael’s work, please be sure to check out www.gopixel.com. “My family and I couldn’t be happier that we made the move to Castle Rock nearly a decade ago,” says Michael. “With the area’s dynamic growth and Castle Rock’s small-town flavor, it’s the ideal place to work and live. And I can’t say enough about my rewarding relationship with the Chamber. The more you give, the more you receive…and I’m not just talking about business opportunities. The friendships and personal relationships my wife and I have developed here over the years have been a blessing.”

Thank You Melanie & Michael for your outstanding efforts! Ambassador Program Sponsored By: Business V oice New sletter ~ Octobe r, Novem ber, & Decembe r 2 014 ~

Converting Suspects to Sales Are you getting sales by accident or by design? Most business owners admit they get most sales by accident. Comments like these prove my point, "I met my last customer in the grocery line", or "a friend of my wife referred my newest client". Selling is an art as well as a science. Do you ask yourself these questions? 1. How can I consistently get in front of more qualified prospects? 2. How will I attract more prospects? 3. What message will help me to close more sales? 4. How did I lose that sale?

This mentoring experience, conducted in the Media Center at Castle View High School, in Castle Rock, will have a significant impact on the students’ ability to launch and run their own REAL, albeit modest, business or non-profit organizations. YEA! Business Mentors commit to seven classroom visits, with continued out-of-class support through email and phone through the Investor Panel at the end of March. You’ll have the opportunity to assist your student group in the process of developing and writing a business plan and creating an investor presentation used to request funding.

value. YEA! teaches middle and high school students not only the importance and purpose of social and business entrepreneurship, but also the process by which one establishes a business enterprise or soc ial movement. YEA! offers students the opportunity to learn these principles through an eight month project-based, hands-on entrepreneurial education. Students are taught to write business plans, prepare and pitch their ideas to investors, obtain financial backing, register their businesses and social organizations, develop marketing plans and materials, prepare for trade shows, and sell their products and services. We invite you to support the students’ experience by becoming a YEA! Business Mentor.

Creating Leaders-Leadership Douglas County "Synergy, simply defined, means that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. It means that the relationship which the parts have to each other is a part in and of itself. It is not only a part, but the most catalytic, the most empowering, the most unifying, and the most exciting part. One plus one equals three or more." Another year of Leadership Douglas County launched on Friday and Saturday, September 12-13, as the Class of 2015 kicked off its 10-month journey of personal, professional and leadership growth. The retreat was held at the Lone Tree Marriott, and was facilitated by Walt Kowalski and Ryan Siemer of BreakThroughs, Inc., whose vision is "Connecting People and Companies to Their Greatness." The class met fellow LDC alumni at a reception and dinner on Friday, followed by an evening of Hollywood Game Night-style fun with business consultant and comedian Pam Terpenny. What did you like best about the retreat? It's difficult to pick out just one thing. Walt was a tremendously skilled presenter, our steering committee members were very supportive, the venue was top notch, and my class members were amazing and I can't wait get started on our project. Everything was very well organized, conceived, and executed. Very impressed. Wish we could do it again. Retreat Participant, Class of 2015 Photos from the retreat are posted on the LDC Facebook page October’s Leadership Class is “History and Amenities Day” on Wednesday, October 1, with activities beginning at the Highlands Ranch Mansion and moving to Louviers in the afternoon. November’s topic will be health/social services/aging, and in December, the topic is government and judicial services in Douglas County. If you are interested in applying to the LD C program and would like to preview the program by attending a class day, please let us know! Leadership Douglas County is designed to broaden participant knowledge of the community while enhancing leadership skills, which in turn increases the strength and effectiveness of our new community leaders.
