Protecting Your Home From Fraud

With the increased emphasis on housing in Alameda County and a senior population aiming to protect their investments, the District Attorney’s Office last Tuesday announced a free program to combat real estate fraud and protect homeowners.

Real estate fraud is any illegal activity affecting a home. It can include stealing your identity to purchase a house or apply for a home loan without your knowledge, forging your signature on a deed or other document, and/or tricking you into paying for real estate services that do not help or that you do not need.

The appetite for real estate fraud is increasing. Last November, four Bay Area real estate professionals were charged with illegally obtaining $55 million in loans for homebuyers in Northern California by creating false documents that they then submitted to residential mortgage companies.

Real estate information provider CoreLogic’s 2023 Annual Mortgage Fraud Report estimates in the last six months of 2023, 0.75% of all US mortgage applications contained fraud, about 1 in 134 applications.

Alameda County’s new Real Estate Fraud Notification Program is part of the DA’s Consumer Justice Bureau. It works like an automated notification you might get if you change your password online or your bank notices suspicious activity. see FRAUD on page 10

role in amplifying voices and creating spaces where neurodiversity can be fully embraced.

ERGs often organize events, workshops, and initiatives to celebrate diversity and raise awareness. In my experience of working with companies with these dedicated groups, I have seen various focus areas that help to spread education and elevate the lived experiences of neurodivergent minds. Groups of neurodivergent employees who are looking for support or even groups of parents of neurodivergent children who are sharing resources allow employees to exchange resources, offer a sounding board, or learn new approaches or systems that would benefit themselves or their children.

This can be a powerful approach to removing stigma and biases around workplace neurodiversity. And once employees feel safe to be themselves and are more understood by their peers and leaders, they can begin to unleash creative and innovative ideas– greatly benefiting the company’s bottom line in multiple ways.

Companies of all sizes can put in efforts to create these communities. In some cases, you may find employees eager to identify opportunities where they can collaborate or lead these groups and disseminate helpful information among their workplace colleagues.

Hundreds of law enforcement officers joined the family and friends of slain Oakland Police Officer Tuan Le last Wednesday during a public memorial at 3Crosses Church in Castro Valley.

The procession started in Oakland and made its way to Castro Valley. Officers from OPD, Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, and CHP were in attendance.

Speakers at the service included Le’s cousin, Jennifer Ky, his uncle, Steve Le, and his brother-in-law, Kenny Phung.

“Nothing can exchange for my nephew Tuan’s life,” said Steve Le. “Officer Tuan Le has gone too young and left behind a lot of his unfinished goals, dreams, and his family behind.”

Also speaking on behalf of Officer Le’s service to the community were California Attorney General Rob Bonta and interim Oakland Police Chief Darren Allison.

“Officer Le personified what it was to exude a deep compassion for his law enforcement family and the community he chose to serve,” Chief Allison said. “His kindness, his loyalty, and his smile will remain in our memories. A true hero, he will never be forgotten.”

Officer Le (36) was killed last month while responding to a burglary at a marijuana grow house in Oakland. Two suspects have been charged with murder. A third suspect was arrested for a possible connection to the case.

2024 Homecoming Court Announced at Celebration Last Friday night, the Redwood Christian High School Homecoming Celebration was held in the Bruce D. Johnson Gymnasium on the Redwood Christian Middle School and High School Campus.

Redwood Christian parents served in the booths and awarded tickets for winners that could be redeemed for prizes, in addition to raffle giveaways!

Bare-Root Plants

Artichokes, asparagus, rhubarb and strawberries are all available as bareroots for planting now through February. Artichokes—Green Globe is the principal variety grown in California. Choose roots that feel solid, not mushy.

Plant in full sun or partial shade, in rich well-drained soil. Give them plenty of space as one plant can grow five feet wide. If you don’t harvest the ’chokes, they will turn into beautiful thistle-like blossoms.

Asparagus—Choose a variety that tolerates fusarium disease, (such as UC 157) with firm, pliable roots that are brown but not dry or brittle. Work the soil a foot or more deep, mixing in large amounts of compost. Dig a trench 8 inches deep and 12 inches wide. Spread some 5-10-10 fertilizer in the bottom, cover with an inch or two of soil, then set the roots 18 inches apart in the row and cover them with two inches of soil. As the new shoots come up, gradually fill in the trench with additional soil. Wait until the second year to harvest.

Rhubarb—Extremely easy to grow, rhubarb produces an attractive landscape plant. Three plants are enough for the average family. Only the leaf-stalks are edible (making great pie), but the leaves are poisonous. Choose a good-size root that feels solid. Plant in a well-prepared bed in a sunny area, spacing the planting four feet apart. Harvest in the second year. The stalk is at its peak when the leaf begins to resemble a smooth elephant’s ear.

Strawberries—Roots should be pliable but not mushy. A little top growth is OK. Work compost into the soil, sprad roots like spider legs and cover them lightly with soil. Plant about 12 inches apart in rows or raised beds in full sun, keeping the upper part of the crowns just above the ground level. Apply fertilizer three times a year.

Robin Elizabeth Toussaint: Her ‘Ripple’ Touched Many

This Patriot Will Vote For Trump Dear Editor, In response to Bob Thomas’ “2024 Presidential Choice” let me remind him and others that during Trump’s administration, our borders were under control by building 500 miles of wall and negotiating with Mexico who gave us 28,000 Mexican soldiers free of charge to help manage the borders. Trump rebuilt our military and was the only president in 72 years who didn’t have a war during his administration. Trump was paying our national debt down with the money he was charging countries for energy.

We enjoyed energy independence with low prices at the gas pumps and PG&E bills.

Trump gave us “Right to Try” medications for those who were terminally ill. Trump allowed governors to decide on keeping their states open or closed during the pandemic.

These are just a few of my favorite things so this patriot will vote for Trump!

Robin Elizabeth Toussaint (December 19, 1951- January 6, 2024) was that pebble. It seemed that Robin was in the water all her life! She started working for Hayward Area Recreation Department (HARD) as a lifeguard when she was sixteen years old and worked for and managed their aquatics programs for more than forty years. Every spring she hired and oversaw the training of 130 lifeguards for the 5 swim centers, touching the lives of 8000+ children and adults who learned to swim and enjoy the water each year.

She was a tireless advocate for swim programs for all, locally and statewide. In 2002, Robin was inducted into the Alameda County Women’s Hall of Fame.

The daughter of Tom and Pat Kincaid, Robin grew up in Sacramento in a large active family, boasting 26 first cousins! She swam for the Arden Swim Club and Hall of Fame Coach Sherm Chavoor, alongside teammates Mark Spitz, Debby Meyer and Mike Burton. For a short time,

Richard (Dick) Covell, resident of San Leandro and long-time resident of Castro Valley, passed away at home in San Leandro at the age of 83. A Navy Veteran and avid 49’er fan, Dick is survived by loving wife Sandi, children Dennis (Annalou), Heather (Monty), and Kevin.

Beloved grandfather to Jimmy (Elizabeth), Brian, Sarah, Josh, Connor, and Alani.
