Want to Improve Your Health, Fitness? Don’t Overlook Sleep By Margaret Sohm
quality can impair your focus, worsen your mood and has also been linked to Alzheimer’s. There are many strategies that can help improve your sleep. Many of them are simple and inexpensive to implement. First, be an early riser and get more sunlight in the morning between 6 am and 8:30 am. Go to bed within 30 minutes of the same time each night, preferably before 10 pm and wake up at the same time each day. It’s important to be sleeping between the hours of 10 pm and 2 am as this is when recovery takes place. Avoid screens (computer, iPad, TV, phone) 90 minutes before bed because the artificial light activates the production of daytime hormones such as cortisol in your body. Stop drinking caffeine at 2 pm, cut back on alcoholic
SPECIAL TO THE FORUM
What do you think of when you want to improve your health and fitness? Most people think about working out, dieting, improving nutrition and reducing stress, but an often overlooked yet important contributor to health and fitness is sleep. Sleep puts your body in an anabolic state which builds and repairs muscle tissue, improves your immune system and strengthens your skeletal system. Most adults need 7-9 hours of sleep per night and teens need 8 -10 hours of sleep per night. Lack of sleep can cause many negative consequences to your physical and mental health. Sleep deprivation can lead to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, a weak immune system, pain, depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder. The quality of sleep is also important as poor sleep

beverages and stop drinking at least 3 hours before going to bed. Drink decaffeinated tea like Chamomile to help induce sleep. You can also improve your sleep by turning your bedroom into a sleep sanctuary. Use blackout curtains or an eye mask to block out unwanted outside light, cover any unnatural lights from power strips and alarm clocks. Stay cool by making sure your bedroom temperature is between 60℉ - 68℉. Keep office work out of the bedroom and place a houseplant in your bedroom. Practicing self-care by getting a massage or using selfmassage tools such as rollers, lacrosse balls, and massage guns will improve your sleep. Exercise and lift heavy weights early in the day, lose body fat, and do not eat right before bed. If you eat close to bedtime, have a high-fat, lowcarb snack to stabilize your blood sugar. Eat foods that are rich in magnesium or apply a

s we head into fall and temperatures ease, it looks like the local real estate market is taking its cue from the season. We are seeing a gradual slowdown in sales, and, in sharp contrast to the beginning months of 2021, we are seeing a downward pressure on pricing as well. The big question on everyone’s mind is, “Could this finally be the long-anticipated market slowdown or is this just a normal seasonal adjustment?” Truth is, no one really knows and we will not have any definitive answers until we get into the spring market. If home sales snap back and prices climb upwards again, we can conclude that September 2021 numbers represented a seasonal slowdown. If, however, prices continue to ease towards the middle of 2022, then we will know with certainty that we have crested a peak.
One of the hallmarks of the red-hot market earlier this year was an extreme lack of inventory for buyers to purchase. Park It: Volunteer to Beautify the Beach By Ned MacKay
SPECIAL TO THE FORUM
C
rown Beach in Alameda is one of the most beautiful shorelines on San Francisco Bay. You can help make it even more so by joining in a volunteer beach cleanup session from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16, led by park district naturalist Michael Charnofsky. Volunteers should bring their own gloves and bucket if possible, though both will be available for loan. The event is for ages eight and older and parents should accompany youngsters. It’s free, of course, but registration is required. While you are at the beach, check out the prize-winning California Coastal and Ocean Amateur Photography Exhibit at Crab Cove Visitor Center. Sponsored by the California Coastal Commission, the photos are on display through December during visitor center hours, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays. Entry is free. And it’s fish feeding time from 3 to 3:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays at the visitor center aquarium, where the staff provides food for the crabs, moray eel, perch, pipefish and other fish from the Bay. The visitor center is at the end of McKay Avenue off Alameda’s Central Avenue. For information on the exhibit call (510) 544-3187. To register, call 888-327-2757 and select option 2.
You can help make Crown Beach in Alameda even more beautiful by joining in a volunteer beach cleanup session from 10 to 11:30 a.m. this Saturday, Oct. 16.
Park History Sunol Regional Wilderness in southern Alameda County has a long and fascinating history, starting with the Ohlone Peoples who called the area home for millennia, and continuing through a century of ranching and homesteading. The park will celebrate its history with music, crafts, games and other activities in a free event from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16, hosted by naturalist Kristina Parkison. Sunol Regional Wilderness and its visitor center are at the end of Geary Road off Calaveras Road about five miles south of I-680 and the town of Sunol. There’s a parking fee of $5 per vehicle. For information, call 510-544-3249.
Make a Corn Husk Doll Corn husk doll making is on the agenda from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16 at Ardenwood Historic Farm in Fremont, using corn husks and other materials gleaned from the fields. Then from 3 to 3:30 p.m. you can help with the farm chores – feed the chickens and livestock, and learn the animals’ favorite foods. Both programs are free of charge and registration is not required. Ardenwood is located at 34600 Ardenwood Boulevard, just north of Highway 84. Admission fees apply; parking is free. For information, call 510-544-2797.
It’s Tarantula Mating Season As mentioned in a previous column, this is the tarantula mating season, when the male spiders venture forth from their burrows in search of females for purposes of procreation. Naturalist Virginia Delgado will introduce Hazel, the tarantula in residence at Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve in Antioch, during a meet-and-greet from 4 to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16. Virginia and Hazel will be at Black Diamond Mines’ upper parking lot, at the end of Somersville Road about 3.5 miles south of Highway 4. The program is free. ‘Beautiful Brunches’ Hike If spiders are not your thing, join naturalist Kevin Dixon on one of his “Beautiful Brunches” hikes. Kevin is leading a moderate, 2.4-mile hike from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 17 at Black Diamond Mines. Bring your favorite food and drink. Wear comfortable clothes and good footgear, some trails are steep and rough. The hike is free of charge, but registration is required. To register, call 888-327-2757 and select option 2. Black Diamond Mines has a parking fee of $5 per vehicle when the kiosk is attended. For general park info, call (510) 544-2750. These are just a few of the upcoming programs in the East Bay Regional Parks. For a complete listing, visit the website, www.ebparks.org.

Editor: There’s a large sign above John Drive that reads “You Are Welcome Here.” It stands just behind the barbed-wire topped chain link fence surrounding 3Crosses / Neighborhood Church. Lead pastor Danny Strange seems to want LGBTQ folks to feel welcome at their church, but the welcome that’s offered is conditional. Recently Danny told me that “We have unity as a leadership around the Scripture’s teachings regarding same-sex relationships.” Which explains why church leadership turned away a gay couple who wanted to marry there. The couple left the church and were married at another local church by a former 3Crosses pastor who also left the “you are welcome here” church. The message that this scenario sends to the LGBTQ community is: “god supports our relationships and rejects yours.” To be clear, I don’t want to force this church (or any church) to do anything they don’t want to do. After all, religious freedom is important in this country, even when it includes anti-gay bias. But wouldn’t it be great if the largest and most popular church in Castro Valley was a welcoming and affirming congregation for everyone? I do want to make folks aware of where a church stands in our community regarding LGBTQ relationships. This church used to hold ‘Pray Away the Gay’ groups. Until 2019 their posted sermons included one titled “The Matter of Homosexuality” in which a 3Crosses pastor said that “god painted a picture” of the family, and gay families were apparently not in that picture. If you are reading this, you likely live in Castro Valley. And I’m guessing you have LGBTQ friends, family members, neighbors or coworkers. Why would you or anyone else want to support a church – no matter that church’s popularity - if they treat your gay friends differently than they treat you? –Billy Bradford, Castro Valley

Isaiah Nobriga is our Athlete of the Week. This Castro Valley High School Varsity Senior rushed for a key touchdown in the Trojan’s 20-14 win over Marin Catholic in this past weekend’s Homecoming game. Nobriga also caught a 71-yard pass from
Lucas Chauvin against the Trojans’ 22-12 win over Piedmont last month. Isaiah has played football and baseball over his four years at Castro Valley and is reportedly being scouted by a Division 3 university.

October marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). Like other shelters, Ruby’s Place offers services such as counseling, case management, or assistance to find alternate housing. These services come at a time when an estimated that 15 million children witness domestic violence each year, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) National Statistics. In Alameda County, the Public Health Department recorded about 6,000 domestic violence-related 911 calls every year since 2014. Ruby’s Place did not initially see an increase in the number of people seeking help because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Kirkland said. But those numbers started growing in March and April of this year as the quarantine restrictions were lifted. “The client numbers change a lot,” Kirkland said. They come and go on their own terms. It can change monthly, weekly, and even daily. This is why celebrating with a Halloween party and keeping everyone together is so beneficial for these kids.” If you or someone you know is trying to escape domestic violence, you can call the Ruby’s Place crisis hotline at (888) 339-7233 and para Español at (510) 786-1246.

ARIES (March 21 - April 19): You’re moving from a relatively stable situation to one that appears to be laced with perplexity. Be patient. You’ll eventually get answers to help clear up the confusion around you.
TAURUS (April 20 - May 20): A vexing situation tempts you to rush to set it all straight. But it’s best to let things sort themselves out so that you can get a better picture of the challenge you’re facing. GEMINI (May 21 - June 20): Financial matters could create some confusion, especially with a torrent of advice pouring in from several sources. Resist acting on emotion and wait for the facts to emerge. CANCER (June 21 - July 22): That goal you’ve set is still in sight and is still in reach. Stay with the course that you’re on. Making too many shifts in direction now could create another set of problems. LEO (July 23 - August 22): It might be time to confront a troublemaking associate and demand some answers. But be prepared for some surprises that could lead you to make a change in some long-standing plans. VIRGO (August 23 - Sept. 22): Congratulations. You’re making great progress in sorting out all that confusion that kept you from making those important decisions. You’re on your way now. LIBRA (Sept. 23 - October 22): A difficult experience begins to ease. That’s the good news. The not-so-good news is a possible complication that could prolong the problem awhile longer.
