Castro Valley is seemingly a long way from the Sierra Nevada, but wildfires there have a local impact as air quality here worsened and Alameda County firefighters raced to assist there. Some two dozen Alameda County firefighters joined crews from all over the state in the fight to save South Lake Tahoe from the Caldor fire, and a fresh crew of
firefighters relieved the original crew this past Saturday. “We stand ready to help not only our immediate community stay safe, but to protect the larger community as well,” said Alameda County Fire Department spokesperson Brian Centoni. “We already see lots of support from the families of the fire area, but we have to applaud our own firefighters’ families for the support and love they give us that makes see FIRES on page 4

With utility scams continuing to peak during the current pandemic, it is important for customers to be vigilant and to know what steps to take to prevent themselves or their families from falling victim. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, scammers have become increasingly deceptive and have increased calls, texts, emails, and in-person tactics. They are contacting electric and gas customers asking for immediate payment to avoid service disconnection. These impostors can be convincing and often target those who are most vulnerable, including senior citizens, those with limited English proficiency and low-income communities. They also aim their scams at small business owners during busy customer service hours. In fact, there have been more than 2,700 attempted scams reported to PG&E’s customer service line since June 2021

High atop the roof of the Castro Valley Marketplace are four active beehives that supply the Natural Grocery store below with its CV-specific and locally produced honey. The hives were installed there last year under the vision of store owner Donna Layburn and managed by beekeeper Mike Vigo. Layburn made it a priority to include the bees as part of her agreement to open up the Natural Grocery store at the Castro Valley Boulevard location. The boxes stacked four or five high apiece were installed last year and produced its first bounty this past Thursday of 250 pounds of deep gold-colored honey. “The response we get from the people when we tell them we have our own local honey, is, ‘where can I buy it?’,” says Layburn. “We sell several types of honey at the Grocery, but the local stuff goes fast.” As part of the harvest last week, beekeeper Mike Vigo demonstrated the process of collection for a crowd gathered

Fires: Air Quality Alert Had Been Extended Through Labor Day Weekend continued from front page our efforts possible,” Centoni continued. Centoni spoke from the Lake Tahoe fire lines, literally putting out fires himself while helping keep the community informed about the firefighters’ work. Castro Valley may have avoided its own wildfire last Thursday when Alameda County crews responded to a shop that had caught fire in the 30000 block of Palomares Road. It had already spread to nearby vegetation in the wooded area, but firefighters were able to extinguish it quickly and avoid any further spread. There were no injuries to residents or firefighters, and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation. With air dirtied from distant
and nearby fires, health and air-quality officials have expressed relief that the air quality has gotten no worse than “moderate” on the official scale. It’s less favorable than “good,” the best rating, but brief exposures are not believed to be harmful to most people, said Tina Landis, spokesperson for the Bay Area Air Quality Management District. Extended exposure to “moderate” air quality might be a different matter, though, Landis said, especially for those at greater risk from bad air. We’ve already breathed “moderate” air for days, and we might breathe it for the immediate future, she said. Landis suggested that people
take some further precautions against bad air, especially those whose age or medical conditions might put them at greater risk. She suggested staying indoors and perhaps using air purifiers there. If there is only one air purifier and it’s fairly small, one room can serve as the “clean room” for periodic visits or for extended use, Landis said. “Unfortunately, we’re only able to forecast air quality a few days into the future, so keep checking your local air quality,” Landis advised. She recommends the EPA Fire and Smoke map at www.fire. airnow.gov An air quality alert had been extended through the Labor Day weekend, with a Spare the Air Day declared on Sunday.
Alameda County firefighters sent three crews to the Caldor Fire.
Fields: The Overall Project is a Collaboration Between CVUSD and HARD continued from front page addition, new turf, irrigation sprinklers, infield clay, dugout fencing, and small bleachers would be installed on the existing softball field on the west side of the lower facility.
An Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant ramp that connects the two fields will also be installed. Similar to the current conditions, both field improvements will continue to support natural
grass with compacted gravel for the running track. TrieuQuince noted that CVUSD is starting a future fund in case the decision is made to convert the fields to artificial surfaces like the ones found at Castro
Valley High School Field. The overall project is a collaboration between Castro Valley Unified School District and Hayward Area Recreation and Park District. The funding comes from a combination
of voter-approved Measure G and Proposition 51 monies as well as reimbursement from the California State funds for deferred capital improvement projects. “For the Creekside projects,
we have pretty much finished with their building upgrades as well as their classroom renovations,” Trieu-Quince said. “The fields are the last thing that we are doing and we could not be prouder.”

This is the Grocery’s second year of harvesting. “Usually there is a spring honey and a fall honey, and each has its own unique flavor,” Layburn said. “The color and taste come from different types of flowers and trees, such as the abundant eucalyptus trees here in Castro Valley.” Layburn and Vigo started their honey-making operation about 11 years ago, which Layburn lovingly refers to as her “Earth momma” phase. A friend insisted she try beekeeping and one hive increased to two. Layburn then went on to establish the Natural Grocery at the Alameda Marketplace on Park Street and called on Vigo to help her with managing four hives on that building’s rooftop about four years ago. The Alameda and Castro Valley stores keep their own supply separate from the other to ensure the honey is hyperlocal. In addition to the 250 pounds of honey harvested in

The Problem with AVMs
I
t is almost impossible to talk to anyone about homes without the topic of AVMs (Automated Valuation Model – eg. Zestimate) coming up. A prospective buyer can easily access the AVM of any home they are visiting and most sellers know at least one AVM number long before any Realtor shows up for a consultation. An AVM is an online calculator that uses linear and multiple regressions to form an estimated market value. The algorithm typically utilizes a home’s age, nearby market values, area trends, historical data, general property features and more. It is a quick way to get an estimated valuation for a property.
Problem: they are not accurate. There are four easy places to get an AVM: www.zillow. com, www.realtor.com, www. homes.com and www.redfin. com. Type your address into Google and at least three of these sites will usually pop up. Click on the links for your address and a valuation should appear. Go to at least three sites and write down the numbers. For the sake of this article, we picked a ordinary home at random and looked up the valuations. Zillow put the value at $1,155,800, Redfin came in second at $1,229,396, Realtor. com followed at $1,233,400 while Homes.com would have made the homeowner ecstatic with an AVM of $1,532,012.

They can also fluctuate wildly: the initial Zestimate for a home we recently sold was $1,434,031. Based on the level of amenities, the home was listed at $1,599,950. The very next day, the Zestimate jumped to $1,691,056. When the home went pending 7 days later, the Zestimate soared to $1,806,823. In the meantime, Realtor.com showed the value at $1,615,734. With 11 offers, the home closed at $2,000,000 and, 60 days later, while the Zestimate showed the value to be $2,080,800, Redfin placed their number between $1,720,000 - $1,890,000.” While potentially fun to look at AVMs, they can provide false impressions. In increasing markets, AVMs are usually lower than the price at which a home will sell. Buyers can be easily lulled into thinking a home will sell for less than it will in reality. In a decreasing market, the automated valuations are typically higher than current selling prices, causing sellers to think their home is worth more than it actually is. Want a correct valuation? Ask a Realtor: they will be happy to visit the subject property and provide a CMA (Comparative Market Analysis) that is actually based on facts. SPECIAL TO THE FORUM
Q:
I’ve cut back my Petunias because they were getting scraggly, and the foliage was yellowish. They’re planted in a container, growing in full sun, and are watered often. Why is the foliage a yellowish color? Are they getting too much water, not enough sun, or is something else going on?
A:
It’s not unusual for Petunias to get leggy and are trimmed often to reduce this problem. Typically, this is done after every blooming cycle. The plants are reduced up to fifty percent. Pruning forces the development of the lateral shoots and keeps the plants compact. Yellow leaves can indicate watering issues, but I don’t think that

fortunately, ninety-five percent or more of the fruit are ruined by some insect that bores into the fruit and leaves some black “smudges”. What can be done? We’re reluctant to use chemicals because we wish to eat the fruit.
A:
This problem is caused by the Coddlzsing Moth. It is a common problem with apples, pears, walnuts, and in some areas, cherries. The adult moth lays on the maturing fruit. The eggs hatch, and the larva or worms enter the fruit. It’s too late to due anything this year. Prevention starts in the spring after seventy-five percent of the pear blossoms have dropped. The tree is sprayed with Captain Jack Deadbug Brew, an organic solution. I’d also apply Beneficial Nematodes to the soil under the canopy to control the overwintering bugs in the ground. And finally, I’d hang Coddling Moth traps in the tree. The traps attach the adults. You monitor the traps and repeat your spray when you observe six to ten adults in the traps. The Coddling Moths are very mobile so you’re looking to protect the tree from those flying in. The We have a won- good news is that the damderfully productive aged pears are still edible. this is your BUZZ BERTOLERO problem. A container has perfect drainage as the THE excess water DIRT is removed GARDENER by gravitation unless there is a saucer. It would be best if you emptied the saucer after watering or, better yet, remove it altogether. The nutrients necessary for plant growth are lost rapidly and are the crux of your problem. When the leaf color begins to fade and or turns yellow, I suspect a nitrogen deficiency. Nitrogen is the element that makes plants green. Seasonal color in containers requires more fertilizer than those in the ground. A single application at planting is not enough to sustain the plants throughout the season. There are many right answers as to what to use; however, I prefer a time-release plant food like Osmocote. A little bit of nutrients is released with every watering, and it is only applied twice during the growing season. Now is a good time to trim/prune/cut back summer annuals that are getting leggy and fertilize. There is plenty of time for them to re-bloom before winter arrives.

Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day By Ned MacKay
SPECIAL TO THE FORUM
E
ast Bay Regional Park District is taking a two-way approach this year to the annual California Coastal Cleanup Day. The district will host in-person volunteer cleanup efforts on Saturday, Sept. 18 at six regional parklands: Martin Luther King in Oakland, Crown Beach in Alameda, Point Isabel in Richmond, Radke Martinez, Del Valle south of Livermore, and Hayward Regional Shoreline. These parklands will have starting times at 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and noon with a maximum of 15 participants per hour. The parks will be open for regular use, but only registered Coastal Cleanup participants will be given
cleanup gear. Pre-registration is required. Information and registration are available at https://www.ebparks.org/ about/getinvolved/volunteer/ events.htm In addition, the district is encouraging self-guided neighborhood coastal cleanup efforts. Volunteers are encouraged to assemble their own gear and host a cleanup in their neighborhood or local park. Report your Coastal Cleanup hours and receive a Coastal Cleanup patch and/or sticker. For information, visit ebparks.org/coastalcleanup or call 510-544-2515. Hayward’s farming and pioneer past will come to life on Saturday, Sept. 11 during the Garin Apple Festival at Garin Regional Park. From noon to 4 p.m., activities will include ice cream making, old-fashioned games, crafts, blacksmithing demonstrations, and tours of Garin’s apple orchard, where volunteers tend trees that grow heritage apple varieties no longer available in stores. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, masks are required and social distancing between participants must be maintained. This is a drop-in program; no registration is required. The festival is free of charge, though Garin Regional Park has a parking fee of $5 per vehicle when the kiosk is attended. Garin is located at the end of Garin Avenue off Mission Blvd in Hayward. For info, call 510544-3220. ‘Fire on the Mountain’
Hike this Saturday There are plenty of other activities on schedule the same weekend in the regional parks. For example, there’s a “Fire on the Mountain” hike from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11 at Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve in Antioch. Meet naturalist Ashley Adams in the parking lot at the south end of Somersville Road for a moderate 1.5- mile hike through the chaparral to see how fire is impacting California. Ashley will describe how wildlife lives with fire, and how the district is working to protect parklands. Bring plenty of water and sun protection. The program is free, but registration is required. If air quality is bad, the program will become virtual. Black Diamond Mines has a parking fee of $5 per vehicle when the kiosk is attended. For registration and info, call 888-327-2757, option 2. ‘Trash Talk’ And at Big Break Regional Shoreline in Oakley, it’s “Trash Talk” time from 10 to 10:30 a.m., 11 to 11:30 a.m. and noon to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11. Through enjoyable and safe hands-on activities, learn how plastic trash enters the waterways and harms our environment. The program is geared for children 6 through 13 and their caretakers, though all ages are welcome. Chaperones are required for everyone under 18 years. All visitors over two years must wear face coverings
