IDFA COMPETITION FOR SHORT DOCUMENTARY
Sine die by Camila Moreiras Production company Inicia Films Contact Valérie Delpierre valerie@iniciafilms.com
In 1966, a U.S. B-52 bomber and a tanker plane crashed into each other over the village of Palomares in southern Spain. The plutonium in the bombs carried by the B-52 was spread over a wide area, and today it still lies buried 20 feet underground, surrounded by desert landscapes and fenced enclosures. This has major health implications for the local people, including filmmaker Camila Moreiras. The Spanish landscape and Moreiras’s body come together in parallel stories of recovery and survival—land and body alike must adapt, whatever the cost.

Wild Animal by Maria Besora Production company ESCAC Films Contact Gerard Vidal gerard.vidal@escac.es
Janira is a three-year-old girl who lives with her family on a goat farm. It soon becomes clear that she is different from her peers. Her speech isn’t as fluent as theirs, and she finds it hard to relate to other children. But her love of nature and animals is infinite. She prefers to spend her day among the goats and the chickens, and can’t bear it if they are in pain or missing. The film observes her without judgement, but also reveals through her concerned parents how little room there is in society for unconventional behavior.

DOCLAB: LIMINAL REALITY - IDFA DOCLAB SPOTLIGHT
Camille & Ulysse by Diana Toucedo Production company CCCB - Centre Pompidou Contact Diana Toucedo dianatoucedo@gmail.com
Somewhere in the future, on a damaged planet Earth, Camille and Ulysse live in their “communities of compost,” where animal and vegetable organisms, technologies, and earth strata merge. They are the first generation of children in a society where humans and non-humans live in symbiosis: Camille adopts butterfly traits to help her study the endangered North American monarch butterfly, while on the coast of Naples, Ulysse explores ways of living together with extinct octopuses, in preparation for their unlikely return.

Two brothers decide to venture on a journey to find the FARC - Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (“Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia”) guerrillas who kept their mother captured for 2 years. Before her death she forgave her captures, which made the two brothers wonder if they could also forgive, if they could find and talk to the guerrillas who guarded her. With the help of the diary that she had been allowed to write during her capture they locate places, deciphered names and begin a journey through jungles and mountains following the trail of their mother’s pain, but also the path to forgiveness.

McCurry: The Pursuit of Colour by Denis Delestrac Production company Polar Star Films Sales Agent DogWoof Contact Ana Vicente ana@dogwoof.com
The first intimate feature length portrait of the contemporary photojournalist Steve McCurry. The one thing more poignant than McCurry’s pictures is his tumultuous 40-year career, which he’s spent travelling the globe essentially alone, capturing candid snapshots depicting the complexity of human life. Exclusive interviews with family, friends, colleagues, and with the photographer himself, bring to life the stories behind some of the most iconic photographs of the 20th century.

The Return: Life after ISIS by Alba Sotorra Production company Alba Sotorra Sales Agent MetFilm Sales Contact Vesna Cudik vesna@metfilm.co.uk
A unique access portrait of a group of Western women who devoted their young lives to ISIS, but who now want to be given the chance to start over, back home in the West. Among them, probably the most famous British recruit Shamima Begum, who fled the country when she was 15, and Hoda Muthana from USA who allegedly incited her followers on Twitter to support the Islamic State. Universally reviled by the media, these women now tell their stories for the very first time. The filming took place over a 12 month period, with entirely unique and exclusive access to Prison Camp Roj in Syria.
