A matter of
Creation.
Editorial In this edition I decided to present a selection of works, however I was confrontaded with the question “what type of field should I include my work? Thus I came to the conclusion that, labeling a field for this work selection, is not relevant, what is important is to create. So this is a matter of creation, and for me this is it. A matter of creation: Art, Food, Design, Architecture, Photography, and Me. Always create. Thus, this work selection colects a work sample within different fiels of creation.

Academic work School of Visual Arts, SVA (New York) PROFESSOR SHAWN HASTO Year 2015
The project seek to design a cover for the book “No one belongs here more than you, stories by Miranda July”. Using just type, the lines of a fingerprint get their texture and shape with the title written on it. At the same time, the author “bleeds” in red in the upper left side of the page. It seeks to catch the reader attention and allow the reader to explore the book and its cover...

COVER
Sinfonietta by Janacek The idea was to design the album artwork for Janácek “Sinfonietta”, and it should be taken under consideration how the five movements could be conveyed into the design solution.
Academic work School of Visual Arts, SVA (New York) PROFESSOR SHAWN HASTO Year 2015
This is a set of notes taken took in order to design an LP cover for the “Sinfonietta” from Janacek. Each line represents a movent from the Sinfonietta. The notes were taken by listening repeatedly the music piece, in order to apprehend each instrumental family and it’s “tempos”; And by using a different color for each family of instruments such as woodwinds, brass, percussion, and strings (violin, viola, cello and double bass), and seek to illustrate the most prominent families we listen during each movement. The aim was to create a narrative that could be somehow readable, illustrate that is a music piece, and illustrate how it sounds.

TYPE
Academic work School of Visual Arts, SVA (New York) PROFESSOR SHAUN HASTO Year 2015
The idea was to pick a font that we admire and consider the best typeface, and design a set of posters accordingly to the following guidelines: Using only type: 1. Design a composition that exposes our devotion for that typeface. 2. Design a composition that destroys the same typeface Using type & image: 3. BRANDING
The Original Cheesecake
Office Private work Year 2013/2014 Team Catarina Mendonça
The Original Cheesecake came out after a long trip to New York, where two lovers spent a period of their life exploring and living the city. One of the best discoveries in the Big Apple was the New Yorker Cheesecake, which in fact both never found any better than in New York. Not because it was very exquisite or gourmet but, because it was honest and pure. How it should be. Back to the basics. This lesson learned, was the starting point to this project, a will to go back to the basics, to look for the truth of things and its origin. After a deep research and many Cheesecake tries in New York, both came back to Portugal and dive into a research for the best ingredients to rescue there the original cheesecake’s flavors. Thus an extensive research and try for the best ingredients, and processes of cooking begun. At the same time, I developed the concept for the brand “the original cheesecake”, and the graphic work including logo, stationary and web design. Furthermore, thanks to the New York Cheesecake, we decided to go beyond the cheesecake itself and develop the “the original cheesecake” as a brand that sought for the original and true recipes.

EDITORIAL
Delugan Meissl Associated Architects, DMAA Selected Work Portfolios Office Delugan Meissl Associated Architects - DMAA Year 2014/2015 Team Catarina Mendonça, Barbora Chen Project Manager: Martin Josst
This project has been a constant on going project in the last two years at Delugan Meissl Associated Architects office. It was required to design a publication, that could exemplify the best projects from DMAA, and give the volume to clients, or to present it in meetings and lectures. Initially the publication started with the volume “Delugan Meissl Associated Architects- Selected Work”, with a sum of the best projects built by DMAA, but faster it developed to further volumes, for different categories, such as: “Culture & Mixed Use”; “Housing”, “Interior Design” and “Office & Shopping”. It was developed from the first brochure, as a design report, to a complete volume, where the printing and binding were important keys as decision makers for its production process. The first set of volumes were in A3 size, and sought to be as light as a newspaper. However, it couldn’t be printed and binded in the office, which represented an obstacle. Afterwards, it developed to the A4 size, which was more hand-able and easy to carry around. This shift, allowed us to produce the whole volume in DMAA office, which represented a big advantage and turn this volumes, not a kind of a closed and ready book, but more like a newspaper, or magazine which are periodically updated and renewed.

During the design process of this volumes, some changes were made, and today the volume is still a live brochure in constant change. On its first samples, the label used in the covers was in a black background for every category: culture, housing, etc. However, after a meeting in China, DMAA realized that to their visual response and

understanding, the difference between the labels wasn’t as clear as for western countries. This pull us to rethink a way to transform the labels in order that everyone could apprehended its difference in the first contact. Thus the clearest option, was to use the color! It also helped DMAA in the management of its stock.

Invitation Card: Golf Club
Office Delugan Meissl Associated Architects - DMAA Year 2014 Team Catarina Mendonça
The project is an invitation card for a golf round in the Golf Club Schloss Schönborn, in Lower Austria. As requirements the invitation card should transmit from the first contact with it, its purpose and aim to the user. Besides inviting for a round in a golf club, the card should simultaneously inform that it would take be in an exquisite and exclusive place as the Golf Club Schloss Schönborn. The main concept for the card was the golf sport itself, and so the card should transmit the philosophy and character of the sport and somehow allow the user to play it and apprehend its nature. Thus the invitation card is composed in two parts, the envelope and the card itself. The envelope seeks the recreate a golf field and at the same time, by its black color to transmit its exclusiveness and singularity. It is characterized by its simplicity and sobriety, in which the concept sought to reduce to the minimum needed to transmit its message. Consequently its opening takes the shape of a golf field‘s hole and its purpose as an invitation card was just cut out of the paper. the font choice follows the concept of simplicity and exclusiveness associated to the golf sport, that in this case takes place in a classic and exquisite place as the Golf Club Schloss Schönborn. The result is an attractive, exclusive and eye catching invitation card that stimulates the user to explore, discover and play with it.

WORK’in
PROGRESS Office Private work Year 2014/2015 Team Catarina Mendonça
TyPhOtography is a project I am developing at the moment in Vienna. It is a project that uses photography as its main tool to report and present it. Rambling around the city can be a fulfilling experience for a graphic designer or visual artist, with so many visual output. The typography has in Vienna a prominent presence and people know it. It still keeps some old typography in the historic neighborhoods, but also in some
catarina mendonca ‘
other more popular, the owners want to distinguish themselves keeping at the same time their character and uniqueness. More than a collection of photographies, this project seeks to illustrate and report the viennese typography and visual character in the city. Thus the criteria for the typography’s selection was to select only the local brands, and the city signage.
