CATHEDRAL COLLEGE WANGARATTA
Merry Christmas In this edition..... From the Principal Junior School Presentation Ceremony Middle and Senior School Presentation Ceremony Community Time- - Mountain Biking Terms Dates 2022
From the Principal MR NICK JONES The College has been enjoying many end of year activities and events over the past two weeks. The highlights for me have undoubtedly been the three musical productions that have been presented to the school community. On Wednesday, November 24 the Year Three – Five Production 'Annie Junior' was performed at the Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre. On Thursday, December 2 our Prep to Year Two students presented their production '2021- A Space Odyssey' in the Stadium and on Monday, December 6 we presented the recording of the Senior Production 'The Wizard of Oz' in the VCE Centre. All three performances were presented to a packed audience of family and friends. After such a challenging year, it was fantastic for members of our school community to come together to enjoy such high-quality acting and singing from our students. I was very proud of the performances of all our students and extremely appreciative of the work put in by our staff. Well done to all our students and staff for the amazing work that went in to prepare and rehearse these outstanding productions. We have also appreciated the opportunity to hold our Year Five and Year Twelve Graduation Ceremonies over the past weeks. These rites of passage are very important for students and families as we celebrate their achievements and recognise these important milestones in their lives. It was fantastic to see so many parents, family and friends attend events over the past few weeks.
Staff Farewells At the end of the 2021 school year, we are farewelling a number of staff who are moving on from Cathedral College. We sincerely thank them all for their contributions to The College and we wish them all the very best for their future. Farewell to: Susan Xiong Karen Kaine Reverend David Jones Sam Woods Suzie Quartermain Lynley Kelly We are excited to welcome a number of new staff to The College and I look forward to introducing you to them in the new year.
Merry Christmas to you! Finally, would like to wish all our Cathedral College families a very Merry Christmas and a safe and joyful holiday period. I encourage you all to take the opportunity to spend some quality time with your family and friends after another challenging year. We are all looking forward with hope and optimism that 2022 will be a positive year with fewer disruptions and many more opportunities to come together as a school community. All the best.
From the Head of Junior School MR GREG NEWBOLD As the 2021 school year comes to an end, I wish to sincerely congratulate the entire school community for the tireless effort and commitment to manage our way through another year of great challenge. From adversity comes resilience and we have surely been required to develop deep reserves of resilience these past two years. In some ways, the challenges were more immense this year, as we entered 2021 expecting the year would offer a more pre-COVID type of normal. Even though this prediction was short of the mark, I cannot be prouder of the way our students, staff and families have soldiered on as best as possible. There has not been a correct way to proceed, nor a manual to follow, but just a sense of intuition, a dash of hope, some experience and copious amounts of trial and error. If the manner the students returned to school in Term Four is an indication of how we overcame challenges, then we should be optimistic and confident in the way we all dealt with remote learning. To have the students back onsite during Term Four enabled us to enjoy a proper end of the year, with most events being conducted successfully. The two productions, the Years Three to Five interpretation of "Annie Jr" and the precociously talented performance of "Prep, One, Two – A Space Odyssey", were highlights of the term and performed in front of large, appreciative audiences. The Junior School Graduation proved to be a wonderful culmination of primary education for our current Year Five students. With school staff members acting as wait staff for the dinner section, followed by families attending the formal certificate presentation element, the entire evening was age-appropriate and comprised an innate sense of pride, joy, and achievement. The House Athletics was a wonderful re-instalment for 2021 and the students participated with infectious House spirit and gusto. They brought energy, enthusiasm, perseverance, and camaraderie to each event, which is a further testament to the resilience of our young people. As the school year ends the Christmas season begins. I sincerely thank the Junior School and broader school community for their support and care. It is a privilege to teach, nurture and guide young minds and we are honoured to have been part of each child’s 2021 learning journey. I also am most grateful to The College academic and support staff for their tireless and selfless efforts. Their professional and collaborative manner enabled a successful year of learning and a sense of belonging to be achieved. Finally, the Junior School students deserve the heartiest of congratulations and commendation for their efforts, sense of community, joy and happiness they brought to each school day. I wish everyone a holy Christmas and a safe and refreshing holiday season.

Final Middle School Assembly It was lovely to be able to finish the academic year with a celebratory assembly that recognised the many efforts and involvement from our students across a range of different areas. The following students received a School Service Award for their contribution and assistance to the Junior School Production: Year Eight: Makenzie Clark Flynn Carson
Year Nine: Tully Frasca Bridget Pizzini Isabella Cairncross Zarah Pearson Oscar Brundell
It was also wonderful to listen to a number of musical performances from our very own students and appreciate how they have been developing their skills over the course of the year. Thank you to Luca Baricevic, Liam Sinclair, Annabel Hart and Tess Goodman for their impressive performances. We also had the opportunity to recognise those students who participated in the recent House Creative Arts Competition. With the return to onsite teaching and learning earlier this term, there was a last-minute opportunity to run an adapted version of the House Creative Arts Competition. Students were encouraged to submit recorded dance and music entries to try and fill the gap left by the cancelled House Music Competition. Creative Writing, Photography and Film entries tackled the theme of ‘change’. Thank you to all the students who submitted an entry.
Year Six Dream Seeds Workshop Last week our Year Six cohort were also involved in a workshop presented and coordinated by Youthrive entitled 'Dream Seeds'. Dream Seeds is a workshop created by Youthrive Victoria Alumni to help build aspiration and ease transition to secondary school. The workshop developed for Year Five and Six students aims to show young people that they have the capacity to be the leaders of their own lives, irrespective of their circumstances. The program is focused on three main pillars: aspiration, resilience, and connection. Original activities and games build knowledge and skills to help young people create a personal vision and practical pathways to positive futures. Youthrive Victoria Alumni, who have grown up in rural Victoria, facilitate the workshop and share their experiences with the primary students. Our Year Six students were clearly engaged throughout these activities, and it was great to hear about their hopes and dreams for the future.
Planning for 2022 As we come to the end of the 2021 academic year, I would like to thank all of the Middle School community; students, families and staff, for their dedication and contributions throughout another challenging yet rewarding year, which involved multiple lengthy time periods of learning remotely. I am very proud of what we could achieve throughout this year. We also start to farewell our Year Eight cohort who will move up to the Senior School next year and welcome the Year Five cohort who will start their time in the Middle School next year. At the end of this year, I also head off on parental leave for 12 months and Ms Lauren Lee will move into the Acting Head of Middle School role for 2022 (llee@cathedralcollege.vic.edu.au). Ms Lee was involved in this week’s District Transition Day as part of her handover into this role and working with all students in Year Six, Seven and Eight. I look forward to reconnecting with all of you when I return.

New Beginnings Advent In the Psalms we are told; By awesome deeds you answer us with deliverance, O God of our salvation; you are the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas. By your strength you established the mountains; you are girded with might. You silence the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves, the tumult of the peoples. Those who live at earth’s farthest bounds are awed by your signs; you make the gateways of the morning and the evening shout for joy. Psalm 65:5-8
For many of us, it’s been another very stressful year and we can get very caught up in the overwhelming number of tasks still left to do before Christmas and the end of the year. But as the sun begins to set on 2021, let us take a step back and appreciate Christmas and be grateful for the many small blessings we have received. Psalm 65 speaks of the awesome deeds of God. The mountains that God established. The waves God sets into motion. The sunset and sunrise that shout for joy. We need to be in awe of the signs God has given us. And Christmas is the biggest sign of all! The coming of the Christ Child, the embodiment of God’s love, a gift for us all. But let us remember the little signs of God’s love throughout this Advent in the lead up to Christmas. The kind smile or the gatherings of family & friends, the little gifts that might not be worth much in price but have been given with much care and love. In a year of lockdowns and remote learning, there may be a tendency to feel abandoned by God. But quite often, God’s love is not shown in huge choirs of angels filling the sky. It is the little gifts of love, and if we stop and look there are many to see at Christmas time. We can be overwhelmed by noise and preparations that take our attention away from what the birth of Jesus at this time. But it is the small moments, the smile of a child seeing a tall Christmas tree in the shopping centre, the joy on someone’s face when a gift is opened, the twinkling of lights in the neighbourhood as the sun sets, and the birds that sings a Christmas carol. These are the things that show us God’s love and grace. God’s power and majesty are just as wonderful in these small moments as they are in the big ones. I hope and pray that we can celebrate each new day with hope and love in the birth of Jesus. May you all see the signs, big and small, and find little moments of joy in the gifts that God gives to us this Christmas.
Wellbeing with the School Counsellor MS JUNE STAMP
Positive Psychology As you take time for reflection over the Christmas break and contemplate your hopes for 2022, consider your Psychological Wellbeing as a starting point. Positive psychology is not about putting on a happy face all the time. Life can be hard; disappointments and challenges are inevitable. However, scientific research has shown that there are some strategies and skills that allow people to navigate the challenges of life more effectively and enjoy life despite the upsets. Positive psychology focuses on the promotion of wellbeing and the creation of a satisfying life filled with meaning, pleasure, engagement, positive relationships, and accomplishment. Please read the wisdom and insight provided by the Black Dog Institute with practical strategies to increase your psychological wellbeing. https://cathedralcollege.vic.schooltv.me/sites/default/files/editions-resources/happinessgratitude/Happiness_Gratitude_FS3.pdf May the magic of the Christmas season fill your home with joy, love, and peace.

We are following up a few strays this week. If you still have any Library books at home, please return them to the school ASAP. We would like to thank all parents and students who ensured books were brought back to us before the holidays. Wishing you all a happy Christmas and safe holiday, with lots of relaxation and reading time.

Community Time - Mountain Biking MS MARY LAUGHTON This year our Middle School students have had the unique opportunity to participate in the Community Time Program. As part of this program, students were able to choose from a range of activities offered on a Friday afternoon. Mountain biking was one such option, and we were exceptionally fortunate to have experienced coaches Greg Meyland (Education Coordinator at AusCycling) and Wes Samson (West End Cycles) to support us with running mountain biking workshops for our students. Students completed a range of activities that aimed to support and advance their fundamental cycling skills. This included time spent on the school grounds and at the Mitchell Avenue Pump Track. It was impressive to see all of the students’ skills, knowledge and confidence develop over the three sessions. We would like to take this opportunity to pass on our sincere thanks to Greg and Wes for their support of this program. It is hoped that this program will again be offered next year to continue the development of our cycling students. Mountain bike racing is becoming a very popular sport for our students and there are currently two interschool mountain biking races scheduled for Term One next year. February 25: Falls Creek 2022 Victorian Schools Mountain Bike Race – this cross-country race is for students in Year Three and above. March 11: Mount Buller Alpine Epic. This race is for students in Year Seven and above. Entries for both races will be taken when we return to school. Any student in the relevant year level is welcome to attend, however, it must be noted the competitions are not training rides and students should be fit, and comfortable, mountain biking before race day. For further information on the races or our school mountain biking program, please contact Ms Mary Laughton mlaughton@cathedralcollege.vic.edu.au
