CATHEDRAL COLLEGE WANGARATTA Fortnightly Newsletter

In this edition..... VISTA From the Principal Indonedian Cross-Age Learning Anglicare Winter Sleepout CCW Blood Drive 2021 Inspired Art Showcase - Love's Magic Term Three Important Dates Weeks One - Five

VISTA In Homeroom this coming Friday, the oldest child in each family will be issued with a copy of VISTA, The College’s mid-year publication. What a pleasure it has been to reflect upon all the wonderful teaching and learning, co-curricular opportunities and other experiences our students have had this semester. This small publication by no means captures all of the wonderful things that have taken place but aims to showcase what a busy, diverse and dynamic Semester One our students have had. This issue of VISTA encapsulates the joy of returning to a relatively stable teaching and learning environment and the pleasure of being together again as a whole college community. VISTA is also available in a digital copy on our website.

Staying informed The College aims to have timely and effective communication with parents and guardians though a number of platforms. There are several ways to stay informed, including reading this newsletter! We also encourage parents and guardians to download the College App, as this is the best way to access current information, permission forms, access The College calendar etc. Our parent and wider community (including grandparents and special friends!) are also encouraged to follow our social pages, Facebook and Instagram and enjoy seeing what is happening at The College. - Kellie Cairncross Director of Development

From the Principal MR NICK JONES As Term Two draws to a close I know that students, staff and families are looking forward to some downtime to relax and recharge the batteries over the coming weeks. While we have continued on with our academic and co-curricular programs as normally as possible during these COVID times, we are very conscious of the pressures and demands that constantly changing restrictions place on our whole school community. Students and staff have been magnificent in the way they have responded and cooperated with the ever-changing restrictions; the requirement to wear facemasks in the classroom, the postponement of excursions and sporting events and the ongoing uncertainty of what tomorrow may bring. I also thank all our parents, carers and families for your understanding and cooperation when restrictions have had to be placed on you visiting The College. Over the past week, I have been enjoying reading the feedback provided by our teachers to students and parents in the Semester One reports. I would like to congratulate our students for the effort and commitment they have dedicated to their studies throughout Semester One. The first area of the student report that I always read is the Approach to Learning. This section of the report indicates how well each student is striving to achieve their best in the classroom. Striving for excellence is a key focus for us at Cathedral College and our students are supported to understand what ‘giving your best’ looks like each day in the classroom. I encourage all parents and carers to sit down with their children and discuss the information that is presented in the report. Celebrate the strengths and successes of the school report and use constructive feedback to set some goals or targets for the second half of the year. Finally, I would like to thank all parents who have complete the school satisfaction survey in the past week. The feedback provided in this confidential survey is important for our school improvement and planning processes. The survey will close at the end of the day this Friday and I encourage anyone who has yet the complete the survey to please take the time to do so before the end of this week. https://researchdepartment.limequery.com/445698?lang=en I wish all our Cathedral families a safe, relaxing and refreshing holiday period and we look forward to seeing all our students back at school for the beginning of Semester Two on Tuesday, July 20. All the best.

From the Head of Junior School MR GREG NEWBOLD Amazingly, the first semester has come to an end, in what seemed to have been a pretty fast ride. Many exciting events have occurred, with many more to come in the second half of the school year. From a co-curricular perspective, House Swimming and House Cross Country were hugely successful, with House Music and House Athletics awaiting us in Term Three. Junior School House Clubs enabled our Year Five students to demonstrate leadership, preparation and guidance towards their younger counterparts. Year One and Two enjoyed presenting their Term Keyboard concerts, which enhanced the Music and Performing Arts program in the Junior School. This program continues into Semester Two, supported by the Years Three- Five stage production of Annie Jr, and the Prep – Two play late in Term Four. From an academic perspective, students have undertaken Numeracy Fluency Assessments, which provided data for future learning in Mathematics. Years Three and Five completed the annual NAPLAN assessment program with a minimum of fuss and undertook it as a natural part of their learning regime at school, many students have begun a literacy support program as part of MultiLit, which supports the learning of fundamental literacy skills, as well as some students undertaking enrichment activities in the classroom. In Term Three, our Celebration of Learning evenings will occur (fingers crossed!) in August. These evenings showcase the multitude of learning opportunities the students experience and give them the vehicle to share their knowledge in a public speaking environment with families and friends as the audience. More information will be provided early next term. Year Three are currently on camp, as I write this piece, and have been enjoying a wide range of activities that require the skills of collaboration and teamwork to be called upon, underpinned by healthy dollops of resilience, acceptance and perseverance. Year Five head away in the first week of Term Three to Echuca, with each other year level having a camp experience at some stage next semester. So as you can see, there are many wonderful and diverse experiences available to our students. I am most grateful to the families for supporting our school and allowing us the privilege of educating your children. Our support and academic staff provide immense time and effort and gain great enjoyment and satisfaction from the engagement and interest of the students. As a collective, I offer my thanks to all. I wish our community a safe and restful vacation and look forward to another semester of adventure, challenge and excitement all wrapped up in learning.

Year One joined their keyboard playing classmates in a rendition of Hot Cross Buns

From the Head of Senior School MS ANNE HARRIS With the semester coming to a close it's a good time to reflect on all that we have achieved this year. The Senior School has been busy with SACs and assessment tasks with some sporting achievements as well. Our Year Nine Social Enterprise students have successfully completed their trading day markets with the assistance of their wonderful teachers. The students were successful in selling their products and raising money for their chosen charity. Well done to all. I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable holiday.

From the Director of Studies MRS JULIE FINDLAY Semester One is quickly drawing to a close. Teachers are working hard to finish their reports on student learning and students are completing the concluding activities to their courses. The reports will be emailed home during the first week of the school holidays. Please email the school office if you do not receive the report by Friday, July 2. The reports are a summary of your child’s progress in learning for the semester. The report will also provide some feedback on how the student can develop their skills or improve their application to learning in the year ahead.

VCE Parent-Teacher Interviews For Year Twelve students this will be their last formal, written report. An opportunity to meet with teachers will occur early in Term Three, on August 3rd. This is an important opportunity to discuss what your child needs to do in the final unit of study with their teachers. All interviews will take place online as this guarantees interviews will take place. The interviews are also open to other students and parents who study a VCE subject. Details will be emailed out with reports.

Year Six – Ten Parent Teacher Interviews Core subjects are a year-long study, but electives change each semester. As many students will begin new electives in Semester Two parent-teacher interviews will be held in Term Four. This gives students the opportunity to learn new skills and content and discussion of progress to occur after Progress Reports have been issued at the end of Term Three. These interviews will be held on October 11 and 12.

Changing Electives Students are encouraged to attend a class before deciding they do not like the subject. The student then needs to see their YLC if they wish to change their elective and discuss why they would like to change. All changes need to take place in the first two weeks.

Term Three – Information Nights Term Three is the term we share information about the wellbeing and teaching and learning programs for the year ahead. Most importantly it is an opportunity for students to hear about the electives on offer.

Senior Pathways Evening – July 29 We begin the information night series with the Senior Pathways evening. This is an opportunity for Year Twelve, Eleven and Ten students to meet with past students and professionals in the area. Students and parents can ask questions and discuss how they made career choices and how these pathways may have changed. Students in Year Nine may also attend, especially if they would like to begin a VCE subject in Year Ten or would like to explore future pathways. Details of the event will be emailed out at the end of the holidays.

Other Information Night Dates: Year Ten 2022 Information Night – 7.00 pm on August 5 in the VCE Centre Year Eleven 2022 Subject Selection Interviews – 2.00 – 7.00 pm on August 10 and 12 in the VCE Centre Year Nine 2022 Information Night – 7.00 pm on August 19 in the VCE Centre Year Eight 2022 information Night – 7.00 pm on August 26 in the VCE Centre Year seven 2022 Information Night – 7.00 pm on September 2 in the VCE Centre Details will be emailed out as you will be required to book into the event and follow COVID safe protocols.

Chaplains' Chat REV'D DAVID JONES

Confirmation 2021 In the early days of the Christian Church, when infant baptism became widespread, it became necessary to have a later service, which would ‘confirm’ the promises made at Baptism. This became known as Confirmation. The person being confirmed is old enough to understand the promises they are making. This year at Cathedral College Wangaratta we are offering Confirmation to students in Middle School who wish to be confirmed. Their commitment would be to attend 5 or 6 sessions during term 3. If you would like your son or daughter to be confirmed this year, or you require further information regarding any aspect of the confirmation, please contact me on 57222144, or via email at djones@cathedralcollege.vic.edu.au The Confirmation service is to be held on Sunday, September 12, at Holy Trinity Anglican Cathedral, Wangaratta.

Junior School Chapel Last weeks' Junior School Chapel service was focused on Galatians 5:22-23, which lists the 'Fruit of the Spirit', being love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and selfcontrol. The students learnt that when we have God's spirit in our lives, we show these values. In the Chapel service Year Two Docker students share how they show different 'fruit' in their lives, by being loving, kind, and joyful to those around them.

Wellbeing with the School Counsellor MS JUNE STAMP

Friendship and Belonging Learning how to make new friends and keep them involves a number of skills every young person needs to understand and develop. For some, these skills will come very naturally, allowing them to easily move between different friendship groups, sharing their experiences and opening up to new people. For others, this can be much harder to navigate. Belonging to a group that is likeminded with similar interests is highly beneficial to a young person’s wellbeing. It gives them a sense of security helping them feel valued which in turn builds their confidence. Positive friendships are an important part of the journey to adulthood. Adult carers can support their child or teenager by providing guidance in the many social and emotional skills required for a healthy relationship. This will help them to obtain, retain and maintain friendships. However, not all friendships are regarded as positive. Sometimes young people develop negative or toxic friendships. Therefore, it is also important for them to learn how to identify, avoid or deal with such a friendship. In this edition of SchoolTV, adult carers can learn how to support their young person’s friendship so that they experience a sense of belonging. If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact The College for further information or seek medical or professional help. https://cathedralcollege.vic.schooltv.me/newsletter/friendship-belonging

Safe on Social Media We have been notified by 'Safe on Social Media' to advise the following alert. URGENT PARENT ALERT: Online Grooming on Kiss Kiss Spin the Bottle App. This is the description on the app store. "Complete fun and simple tasks to find a multitude of new friends. Chat and flirt with people you like, participate in friendly matches, get more kisses than anyone else and win in contests." It gamifies inappropriate conversations in chats, offering rewards and prizes for interactions with strangers. In less than 10mins, I had hundreds of messages. I registered with my real age and was able to hide that from the view of other players! We have been notified of grooming through this app already reported to the Police by school's we work with. Please check your kid's phones and remove this app immediately. There is nothing safe about it. It has an age recommendation of 17+ but when you sign up it says that you cannot add an age under 4yrs!! If you suspect online grooming is happening to your child, please contact your local Police or Crimestoppers immediately.

Indonesian Cross-Age Learning MS INGRID BARLAGEN Students in Year Eight Beginning Indonesian have been working on the theme of animals. While they were working on this topic they learned how to write a simple description of Indonesian animals of their choice. They included information about colour, basic descriptive adjectives, habitat and diet. To give this task more purpose, it was decided to present and share their work with the students in Year One Docker. The younger students were engaged by the different animals and listened intently to the students speaking Indonesian, even identifying some colours that they had learned in their lessons. As the Year Eight students returned to class they were abuzz with the information they had discovered about younger members of the school community. For some it was a trip down memory lane, they had missed things like sitting on the floor. Below are some pages from the student’s PowerPoint presentations.

Cathedral College Blood Drive 2021 MR NATHAN MANNING World Blood Donor Day, celebrated on June 14 every year, serves to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank voluntary blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood. This also the start of National Blood Donor Week in Australia. Every day across the nation, someone, somewhere, needs blood. There are around 500,000 blood donors in Australia, who have made 1.5 million donations in the last year. Transfusions of blood and blood products save millions of lives every year across Australia and the world. A safe, regular blood supply also helps people patients with blood and bone marrow disorders, inherited disorders of haemoglobin and immune deficiency conditions. It can also provide critical support for people with traumatic injuries in emergencies, disasters and accidents, and patients undergoing advanced medical and surgical procedures. Cathedral College is proud to be part of Lifeblood Teams, the group donation program from Australian Red Cross Lifeblood. Aside from saving lives through blood donation, Lifeblood Teams is about friendship, a little healthy competition and being part of something bigger than yourself. It’s a unique opportunity for all of us to band together and give something more powerful than money. From June 14 until the end of July we would like to hold a Blood Drive to boost the number of donations from Cathedral College. If you have thought about donating before, we encourage you to make an appointment at the Wangaratta Red Cross Blood Bank and add to Cathedral College’s donation tally. This year we are aiming for 20 donations so support our team, and book in soon.
