CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CLASS OF 2023

The Cathedral School congratulates the Class of 2023 on their outstanding results. We were pleased to welcome them back to school for a BBQ lunch on 6 February (unfortunately delayed due to Cyclone Kirrily so attendance was less than normal). However we proceeded with the presentation of subject prizes and the award of School Dux went to Austin Park who achieved an ATAR or 99.75 – a very impressive result from a truly humble and well-respected student. Some particular points of note from this cohort of students are:

• median ATAR of 85.65

• 97.6% of the cohort received a QCE.

• 78.2% of QLD tertiary applicants received their first preference.

• 64% of graduates also received a vocational qualification.

The Cathedral School prides itself on pathways suited to each individual, and the diversity of future careers from this cohort is testament to this. We look forward to hearing of the successes of their next phase in the years to come.

WELCOME TO OUR NEW SCHOOL PRINCIPAL

On Tuesday 30 January, we held the Commissioning Service for our new Principal, Mr Luke Baills. I was very privileged to represent all Past Students in the part of the service where Luke pledged to help the PSA promote the school and build links with past and present students. We welcome Luke, his wife Steph, and their two children Cooper (Year 6) and Emerson (Year 4) and look forward to working together for the betterment of the school in the years ahead.

‘LEGALLY BLONDE’ - 2024 PRODUCTION

Legally Blonde The Musical follows the transformation of Elle Woods as she tackles stereotypes and scandal in pursuit of her dreams. This action-packed musical explodes on the stage with catchy songs and dynamic dances. Equal parts hilarious and heart-warming, this musical is so much fun it should be illegal!

The cast have been rehearsing for close to 6 months with specialist dance teachers, vocal and musical experts to polish and create a vibrant and exciting performance. The excitement is building as the behind-the-scenes departments of backstage, hair, make-up, costumes, set and props are beginning to piece together to join the students from Year 7 to 12 to bring this musical to life!

Legally Blonde The Musical is being staged at the Townsville Civic Theatre for three performances only on Friday 19th April and Saturday 20th April. Tickets went on sale through the Civic Theatre Box Office on 14 February – don’t miss out!

100 YEARS OF OUR SCHOOL HOUSES

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the creation of our much-loved houses – Bede, Chatham, Langton and More. The PSA is preparing displays and events to commemorate this centenary of friendly rivalry and spirited competition. If you have any special memories, photos or House memorabilia from your school days, we would love you to share these with us.

PAST STUDENT NEWS

FROM THE ARCHIVES- SCHOOL HOUSES

I’m sure we are all familiar with the four school houses, but how good is your memory about their mottos, colours and mascots? Pictured here are the current school banners, designed and released in 1998.

Also did you know that there have been a number of other houses at the school over the years, but only the original four have survived the test of time?

In 1972, two new houses – Keble and Broughton - were created because of increasing numbers and the need to keep the houses small enough for students to know each other. These two houses were discontinued at the end of 1980 along with other changes occurring with the introduction of co-education.

KebleHouse colours were Blue & Gold, and their motto was “In Trust Shall We Triumph”

BroughtonHouse colours were Purple & White, and their motto was “Service is Perfect Freedom”

The primary school has also had some different houses over time. During World War 2, BunnyHouse was created for the children from Kindergarten to Year 3. Bunny House colours were Lettuce Green and Brown Earth, their motto was ‘From Little Seeds Grow Big Trees’ and their House Captain was known as Brer Rabbit

From 1943 until 1954, the students in these years were divided into Brown BunniesandWhiteBunnies to compete in sports carnivals and to earn points for good behaviour and success in their schoolwork and music exams

Another change occurred in 1987, when the primary school moved away from the four traditional houses and introduced three houses named after famous explorers – Mitchell,Leichhardtand Kennedy For ten years, these three houses competed in the annual sports competitions, but in 1997 the Junior School returned to the fold and reintroduced Bede, Chatham, Langton and More. This reinforces the ‘one school’ policy and allows students to belong to the same house for their entire schooling.

House spirit and family loyalty remain strong today.
