FROM THE PSA PRESIDENT

Thank you to everyone who attended the reunion weekend celebrations this year. It was fantastic to connect with lots of past students, some of whom have not returned to the school for many years.

Our Foundation Day speaker this year was Kerry Richards, a boarder from Richmond, from the Class of 1986. Her speech captivated the audience by telling stories about her time at the school, her successful business ‘Merino Country’, her personal sporting challenges and her morning tea with Prince Philip.

The Lagoon Dash was then held, with the excitement of the whole school cheering the runners around the lagoon. The current students won the Bragging Rights Trophy, but I would like to sincerely thank Emma Gelling (2004), Jarrah Pearce (2019), Josh Nalder (2022) and Patxi Phillips (2019) who made a fantastic effort as the Past Students’ team.

The Sundowner by the Lagoon was a lovely evening organized by the PSA, the P&F, and the School. About 60 people attended, mostly past students, and there was great food and entertainment, and good times shared.

A large group attended morning tea, a school tour, and a relaxed lunch in the dining hall on Saturday. Several past students also attended the church service at St James Cathedral on St James’ Day. It was a lovely weekend for all who attended.

To make reunions more accessible to our southern friends, we are hosting a reunion ‘Sundowner’ in Brisbane on 9 November this year I hope you can join me and our new School Principal, Luke Baills, for a casual drink, some nibbles and a chat – see details and booking link in side panel. It will be wonderful to connect with you on your own turf.

SCHOOL NEWS

CELEBRATION OF SCHOOL HOUSES

In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the school House system, Natalie Tritton and I took the initiative to organize and oversee a series of activities. Our aim was to reflect the House competitions of the past, and we chose to host an Interhouse Hockey Competition, representing the traditional hockey matches that used to take place on Monday afternoons. The tournament was thoroughly enjoyable, with each House displaying remarkable competitive spirit. Ultimately, More and Bede emerged as joint winners, while Langton secured second place, and Chatham took third.

The second activity involved the creation of a collaborative art piece, which features the thumbprints of every student on their respective house’s painting. I am pleased to report that the artwork is progressing well, and I eagerly anticipate the final result. Overall, the centenary of the house system is an opportunity to celebrate healthy competition and the enduring spirit of rivalry that motivates each house to strive for excellence.

EXCELLENCE IN ART

2024 has been a standout year for Year 12 student Ciaran Glasheen, who has earned widespread recognition in the Australian art scene for his exceptional paintings

Ciaran’s painting ‘Dad likes striped shirts’ was accepted as a finalist in the prestigious Brisbane Portrait Prize – Next Gen, one of Australia’s most renowned portrait competitions. Adding to this accomplishment, Ciaran also won the Junior section of the 2024 Cameron & Co Swim Art Prize. His stunning painting, which honours surf lifesaving in Townsville, was showcased at the Drill Hall Studio, earning him well-deserved recognition for his beautiful work.

To complete a remarkable hat trick of achievements, Ciaran’s artwork was featured in the Umbrella Studio annual members’ exhibition last month. Impressively, his piece was sold on opening night, marking his first sale as an artist and further establishing his emerging career.

PAST STUDENT NEWS

‘WALL OF HONOUR’ LAUNCHED

We all know many past students who have done amazing things and made a real impact in their life postschool. We believe it is time that some of these people are acknowledged, to honour their achievements and service, and to act as an inspiration for up-and-coming students to follow.

To this end, the Past Students’ Association Committee has decided to launch a ‘Wall of Honour’ for past students of the school who have made an outstanding contribution in their life since leaving school. This may be in the realm of continued service to the school, achievements in career, sports or the arts, or in contributions to the wider community.

Any past student may nominate a suitable candidate, and each year the PSA Committee (with power to coopt) will select a few names to be added to the wall. It will never be a complete list, but it needs to start now and grow over time. The chosen inductees will be announced on Foundation Day each year, and their names added to a new Honour Board, and to the virtual ‘Wall of Honour’ on our website.

Nominations can be made posthumously, and any unsuccessful nominations can be resubmitted the following year. See the school website for more information and a nomination form for the initial selection in 2025, the centenary year of the first Dawn magazine produced by the Old Girls’ Association.
