STRUCTURAL CONCEPT CATHERINE DEMETRIOU
My roof designed for the Murcutt Guest Studio was designed as a Gambrel Roof that contained a Shed Dormer. The Shed Dormer extends over the bathroom area acting as both a roof and a window. The Gambrel roof is divided on each side and consists of a shallow slope over a more steeper one. Ideally, natural light would be fed into the building in two ways: A) Through the triangular top of the Gambrel Roof where glass in places on either side. B) The Shed Dormer will open the roof allowing for light to come through the bathroom area and extend into the living area.

When considering the materials for my roof I wanted to keep it simple, so I decided make it mostly timber and glass (for where the windows are placed). This will not only be economically efficient but it will also emerge within the areas natural surroundings.

AESTHETIC DESIGN AND FUNCTION CATHERINE DEMETRIOU
I have chosen the high ceiling design as the main characteristic of my roof as it is not only aesthetically pleasing but it also has many physical benefits. The high ceiling may allow for installations of lights and fans that do not hug the ceiling. In terms of air movement this is very effective as it moves the air up and down the given area. I have chosen timber as the main material of my roof as it not only aesthetically blends into its surrounding environment but it also is noise efficient during times of rain hail or even wind.
