Dear CJCians,
Contributors JC2 Cohort
W
e have come to the final term of the CJC journey for the
JC2s as they ramp up the preparation to the A Level exams. I am sure that this is a period of mixed emotions for many of you. There is the anxiety of the looming examinations, the excitement of entering adulthood after twelve years of formal schooling and the poignant moments of leaving friends forged over many memorable experiences. As these thoughts and emotions run through you while you work on your concepts and revise what has been taught, do have an outlook filled with gratitude and positivity. Be thankful for the various people you have encountered-- your tutors, home tutorial mates, house members, CCA team mates, the office staff, the Property and Services team, the laboratory staff, the cleaners, the canteen vendors and all the different individuals whose path crossed yours in this college. Each of them would have made a mark in your CJC experience, some in very prominent ways while others in more indirect ways. We thank them all for their contributions in making CJC a second home. As you prepare to leave the portals of the college, we hope that the values of Truth and Love remain the foundation of your development and growth as a Thinker with a Mission, Leader with a Heart. We wish for you to be a reflective and discerning individual who is able to find meaning and purpose in the choices you make in life. May God’s blessing be with you always.
In Veritate et Caritate.

The three day trip in May 2016 involved visits to the Al-Aqsho Orphanage and a non-governmental organisation, ‘Yayasan Dunia Viva Wanita’ (World Foundation for Women). Upon returning to Singapore, the students organised an exhibition presenting information on human trafficking. The exhibition aimed to underscore the relevance of this issue to Singapore and to encourage fellow CJCians to play a part in ending it. The Flame catches up with Team Leaders Denissa Ting (2T07), Ittipat Satukunlasan(2T07) and Shawn Goh (2T07).

What was your objective of initiating this exhibition? Denissa: Our aim of organizing the “Human Trafficking: Let’s Remove Their Price Tags” exhibition is to highlight the relevance of human trafficking to Singapore by presenting information and facts about the issue, especially in the ASEAN region. The information displayed was gathered from the insightful interaction my team and I had with the survivors of human trafficking at Yayasan Dunia Viva Wanita (World Foundation for Women).
Why did you choose to focus on highlighting the plight of human trafficking victims?
Denissa: We chose to focus on this issue because public awareness is significantly lacking, despite it happening in our own backyard. I wanted to shine a light on the plight of human trafficking victims. Apart from having to live in unimaginable living conditions, it is extremely difficult for them to get the help they need due to social stigma and the lack of legal protection, making them fearful to seek aid.
What were the highlights as well as challenges of this initiative? Shawn: One of the main challenges that we faced was communication issues as only a few of us could communicate in Bahasa Indonesia. However, the highlights - which were the presentation of the exhibition to the college and interactions with the NGOs - made all our efforts worthwhile.
What were the lessons learnt from your visit to the Al-Aqsho Orphanage and the NGO Yayasan Dunia Viva Wanita (World Foundation for Women) in Batam? Ittipat: The visit to the NGO Yayasan Dunia Viva Wanita made me appreciate the safety and comfort that we have been taking for granted in Singapore. I was shocked that human trafficking was so prevalent in Singapore and yet I had not heard about it. At the Al-Aqsho Orphanage, the children taught me to appreciate the little things in life.

We are grateful for the selfless devotion of time and effort that you put in to nourish us during Night Study. Your constant smiles and prayers brighten up even the darkest of nights and remind us of the selflessness of parental love.
Dear PSG, thank you for your selfless dedication and enthusiasm in providing snacks for us during the Night Study periods. The 30-minute breaks provided us with the physical and mental energy to carry on as we prepared for our examinations. The Night Study experience is an important part of our CJC journey, and we are grateful for your encouragement and support which saw us through the endless hours of revision. God bless!
2T09
Thank you all so much for your constant love and encouragement! It has been very heartening to be greeted by your warm smiles and the snacks you prepared for us during breaks. We will not forget your kindness as we journey forth on the road to the ‘A’ levels!
2T18
2T24 A great big thank you to the PSG for all the support you have given to us. During the nights when we were studying, you worked alongside us, preparing and offering snacks to us. Thank you for always encouraging us and asking us how we are doing. We truly appreciate the little moments we shared chatting about school! Thank God for your presence and thank you for seeing us through this journey. Thank you so much for your unwavering support, PSG. Despite having children and commitments of your own, you still take time to come down and not only support us with nourishment during Night Study but spiritually too in the form of prayers for good exam results every night. Words simply cannot express the gratitude we have for your sacrifices.
2T29
Thank you so much, PSG, for all the support, prayers, food and encouragement. Sometimes, even that small bowl of pasta made with love is more gratifying then a thousand meals elsewhere. Your kindness has really been a source of strength as we got down to studying through the evening.
2T16 Thank you parents, for the love and care that you have shown to us, be it through the food that you prepared for us during Night Study or your warm vibrant smiles, as if to tell us “Everything will be alright”. Words cannot fully express how grateful we truly are for your endless support, how it has helped to push us through tough times, and how it will still push us through tough times to come. Thank you for your generosity, your warmth, your kindness and for always being there for us.

Our interpretation of the phrase has evolved over our time here, from being just another motto to being a way of life. ‘Truth’ means to be real and genuine and ‘Love’ means to care. Thus, the phrase calls out to us as a call to action, to act in Truth and to act with Love, to be honest with ourselves and to others without having to put on an act for anyone, and to do so with a loving heart. In Veritate et Caritate shows us a meaning greater than each singular word can; that we should not live by separating the emotional and the intellectual, but rather we should embrace them both in order to achieve a fuller life.
‘Truth’ and ‘Love’ are the values which we commit ourselves to upon entering CJC. Living in Truth means being yourself every day. It means not having to put on an act in front of your friends or strangers. It means having no deceit in your heart, but instead the moral strength to do what is right. This is seen in the following actions creating an Instagram account dedicated to the unsung heroes of our community, going forth in competitions with passion and zeal burning in our chests, and clapping along to birthday celebrations in the canteen. It is seen in parent volunteers spending time and effort to provide students with food so that they may have the energy to study through the night. It means running towards the finishing line of a race hand in hand, it means pushing through the journey to the ‘A’ level examinations while still remembering the less fortunate and reaching out to them at every opportunity that we can.
We believe that In Veritate et Caritate is about being honest and having a pure heart. We feel that all CJCians are groomed to be people of integrity, people who do what is right and not what is easy. The motto also inspires us to serve the less fortunate wholeheartedly without expecting reward or recognition.
2 T 1 7
The college motto, ‘In Truth and Love’, signifies what our class stands for. For us, ‘Truth’ is when we, as classmates, are truthful to one another, helping to highlight any negative traits or habits we may have. ‘Love’ is when we help and show concern to one another in times of need. Both ‘Truth’ and ‘Love’ help us to grow together as a class, and as individuals, with humility.
2 T 2 5
‘Truth’ and ‘Love’ remind us to be true and exercise love for ourselves and for the community that we belong to. It means we must be genuine in our thoughts, speech and actions, and to keep seeking a deeper understanding when learning. In the midst of chasing our goals, it is important to remember that we are part of a greater community and we should always care, be nurturing and be prepared to sacrifice ourselves for the greater good of others.
2T01 - Grace Cai
Throughout my time in CJC, I have had the pleasure and honour to meet many kind people who are always more than willing to help a friend in need, regardless of whether or not they are swamped with their own problems. I remember this one time when I found myself in a very unfortunate situation when a combination of a misstep and bad luck caused me to fall into the drain on my way back to class after morning assembly. To my surprise, many of the students around me immediately gathered my things and helped me up. Some even offered to help accompany me to the General Office to get the scratches on my legs cleaned up. That day, I was able to experience the kindness of the CJ community.
2T03 - Mitchell Han
During my OBS trip in December, we were trekking up a mountain over four days. During the time, I witnessed one of my friends selflessly help the others. At high altitude and low temperatures, many of us were not able to climb up as fast as the rest and fell behind. One of the members ran back to help them climb and got the rest at the front to slow down. He encouraged and cheered them on. He didn’t ask for recognition or reward but instead was motivated by a desire to do good for others.
2T04
Once, we noticed a cleaner dragging massive garbage bags to the huge green rubbish bin at the bottom of the stairs outside the P.E. room. Some of our classmates started to help him to carry the bags. It was like a domino effect and soon, all of us assisted him in clearing the garbage.
2T06 - Roshni
When I was feeling quite down, one of the cleaning staff, Mr Sharin, noticed that I looked sad. He sat down with me and tried to cheer me up. That
small act of sincere kindness made my day and made me realise that something as small as an encouragement is enough to bring a smile to someone’s face. Mr Sharin is always known among us students as the friendly cleaner, and his friendly chats are always appreciated as he takes the time to know us despite how busy everyone is.

2T07 - Sanchita Sachdev
One of the staff members at Good News Cafe would ask me how my day was and wish me luck during the exams. Such small gestures really make my day.
2T08
When a classmate of ours wasn’t doing too well in his studies, his friends stepped in to help him out by giving him words of encouragement and offering to study together both in and outside of school. Whenever we are feeling down, there would always be someone in CJ willing to hear us out, someone we can count on.
2T09
When others do not notice us feeling morose after a difficult paper, our teachers come to us to comfort us and encourage us, and even staying back just to ensure that we are able to fully grasp concepts and not make the same mistakes again.
2T10
A J2 senior helped one of our genial cleaners by carrying refillable toilet rolls. He did this on a daily basis which impressed and inspired us to do the same.
2T11 - Loh Jie Yao
During the Promotional Exam period last year, I came down with a sore throat and tried my best to clear my throat as softly as possible when I was studying in the library. Later during the day, I found a small pack of cough drops and a note laid on my desk. The
note read, “All the best for promos and take care of your health! Jiayou! :)”. It was from a complete stranger and, this act of kindness warmed my heart immensely and will serve as a beacon for years to come; reminding me that kindness is free.

The auntie from the ‘Something Fishy’ stall greets all her customers with a heartwarming smile. She also has the impeccable ability to know exactly what you wanted to order before you could say anything.
2T18 - Javerri Kho
In JC1, our classmate injured his ankle and was unable to attend lessons for 3-4 months. Every other week, someone from our class, as well as our teachers, would check up on him to keep him up-to-date on lessons and assignments he had missed in school. When he came back with his foot in a cast and could barely make it up the stairs, we would be there to assist him. It was during this period that I witnessed the unity of the class and how we have all grown in empathy for those around us.
2T27 - Karishma Singh
My classmate Jerome and a group of students helped one of our unsung heroes who fell down the stairs in the grandstand and started to bleed heavily. They immediately notified a teacher, who then called for an ambulance as the situation became serious.

CJ’s teachers are all inspirational due to their hard work and perseverance. Their dedication to developing students holistically has inspired us immensely. Because of them, CJC has been a safe haven where we know we can seek genuine and heartfelt advice, and we know we are not alone.

I have been inspired by many people in CJ, but the ones who influenced me the most are my peers, especially the ones who attended the Leadership Training Conference (LTC) with me. Many of them exemplify great leadership skills in their actions and words. They have taught me what a true leader is, and inspired me to be a leader who leads in ‘Truth and Love’.

Arrttiissttiicc A Coon C nttrriib bu uttiioon nss Perfect By Farahna Alam (2T06) You once asked me what my perfect world would be like. I didn’t answer because I didn’t want a fight. What was the point of dreaming of a perfect world, when reality was a nightmare that kept me up all night. I knew it wasn’t the same for you because you saw perfection in everything. You used to say that beauty was everywhere; all we had to do was just stand and admire. You saw beauty when the sun kissed the horizon; how the crisp clear blue made way for ribbons of lilac and gold and how the red blazed in clouds, setting the sky on fire. You saw beauty in staying up through the night, breathing in the same silent darkness that expects nothing, demands nothing, yet accepts everything. I tried to see it through your eyes, I did. But those sunsets were fleeting, and the nights were boring. It struck me then what my perfect world would be like. It would be these moments with you Even if they are everything but true.

Solitude By Germaine Ha Yu Xiu (2T06) A man alone in a lonely place. He walks down the ash, soft footprints impressed in chips of grey and gold. Hills rolling like captured waves of sea painted with hues of a waking sky. He was alone in a lonely place, tracking his journey with yellowed maps and a rust-covered compass. Fickle arrows point to a circle of directions, he spins around the axis of here and there. The man is alone in a lonely place. He stops before familiar tracks and judders with nausea, drops and stares, cursing from the red horizon to the blue stars. For each time he thinks: just maybe-someone else is here with him in this lonely place.

Awaken the vessels
(2T21) Silent murmurs that seep in Crash against the shores of dreary noons, tinted by sombre hues of grey. Drowning out the lamentations Setting tempestuous seas on fire Soulful laughter pelts the silence, With a good dose of unique quirks and peculiar actions, Voices that rise but never fall, Fiery personalities that blaze but never falter. And for everyone There has always been something, worth holding onto The days filled with sheer and anticipation have fossilised Caked in coarse grains of sand. These relics, Screaming, in their fervent yearning to be liberated once more Fragments and broken shardsEntrenched in a vessel of time Ensnared in brittle jars Lies every moment that has been fossilised All of which, I might never be able to relive again. he spirit of servant leadership is one that is deeply ingrained into the psyche of CJ’s collective consciousness, and it is exemplified no better elsewhere than in our very own leaders. By giving themselves to service completely, our college’s leaders dedicate themselves towards making the college a better place for all of us. It is truly inspiring to witness the fruits of their labour. The most important thing that we should all keep in mind, even as we graduate from CJ, is that every single one of us, whether we hold an official position or not, is an individual with the power to lead and guide our friends and family.
