NatlonalColours The hard work and talent of some of our sportspeople have resulted in their garnering of the prestigious National Colours Awards. Our outstanding sports stars are Hui Jia Sheng Jared (rTzo) and Aldrich Lim Jing Hong (rTzz) for Cross Country, Tatum Antoinette D Rosete (rToz) and Washiyama Yumi (rTor) for Judo, Liane WongYeYing (rTgl)

Fencing and KellyAnn Rodrigues (ITSS) Rhlthmic Gynnastics. Some of our sports teams also received South Zone Colours. They are the Boys' and the Girls'teams for Fencing, the Golf team, the Boys'Judokas,

the Girls' Rhythmic G1'rnnasts and the Boys' and the Girls' teams for Trampoline.

Top Gymnast Kelly Ann Rodriguez (ITSS) showed great versatility in four routines, Hoop, Ball, Clubs and Ribbon, winning the Overall Individual Gold in the

National Inter-School Rhlthmic Glmnastic Competition.

Track Stars In the National Inter-School Cross Country Championships Jared Hui Jia Sheng (tTzo) was identified as the fastest t7 year old school runner and was selected to represent Singapore Schools in the Asia Schools Cross Country Meet in Mongolia. Aldrich Lim Jing Hong (rTzz) was a

creditable 6th in the championship. In the National Inter-School Track and Field Championships, Nissa Lim Yufeng (tTzS) got the bronze for javelin, while SimYong Yong Jennifer (zTgo) also obtained bronze for the high jump event.

Ohampion Choristers Our Choir won Gold with Honours at the Singapore Youth Festival Central Judging of Choirs zorr. They also obtained a Silver and a GoldAward at the prestigious Harmonie Festival in Germany, where they competed with hundreds of internationally acclaimed choirs.

With the chance to peruse universily life for ourseives, REACH Cambridge was ceftainly an eyeopener in almost every discernible way. We learnt, among other things,

independent learning. Lesson styles were unique and specialised; it was an expectation to have done some semblance of prior reading before class participation. This allowed the tutors and professors ofthe

CJC welcomed the year of the Rabbit

Tiger to the year of the Rabbit was dramatized humorously through a boxing match between a Rabbit and the Tiger where the Rabbit emerged victorious after delivering a series of impressive kicks. The concert also featured items other than the aesthetic per{ormances. Most notably, competitions like the

atmosphere was joyous as the

students basked in the infectious New Year spirit. The school environment was livened up by eye catching New

Year decorations and manyteachers were dressed in the auspicious color red, further buo),'rng the high spirits of

the students. The celebration began with the concert with performances by various CCA groups and students from various classes. The audience was also informed of the many customs and traditions practised by the Chinese during this festive occasion. One of the highlights was an item by the Drama Society, a student written and directed play which amalgamated the theme of Family andAlice in Wonderland into a heart-warming

production named'Alice'. The PlaY puts emphasis on the value and significance of the reunion dinner, echoing the over-arching theme of the celebration - Family. Rounding up a series of aesthetic performances, the CJC Outdoor Adventure Club (ODAC) Put uP an entertaining performance and drew much laughter from the audience.

Festive Card Making Competition and the Costume Parade were held. Classes were tasked to design a creative Chinese NewYear Card and zTo6, zTog and zTog rose to the occasion, taking the 3rd,znd and rst places respectively. The Costume Parade was no doubt a highlight of the concert. Representatives from shortlisted classes strutted on stage, parading the colorful costumes that their classmates had put together.

Ronald Lee from zTz3 tookto the stage in the costume of a Tang Emperor. Audience favourite Gabriel Seow, from zTor, caught the

attention of manyby dressing uP as a firecracker! Not to be missed out were the graceful ladies, Fan Yuan and Stella Kim, of zTz4 andzTzg who wowed the audience with their Ao Dai and Hanbok, the traditional

outfits of the Vietnamese and the Korean people respectively. After what must have been a tough deliberation, the judges named zTz3 as the winner of the Costume Parade.

Of course, no NewYear celebration would be complete without the traditional custom of the tossing of Yu Sheng. Mrs Kong (Principal), Ms Khng( VicePrincipal), Mr Sandanam( PE HOD), Father Leslie Raj (College Chaplain), Mdm Lum Poh Ling (Admin Manager), Mrs Seng (Representative of the PSG) and Jonathan Soong (President of the 37th Student Council) were invited on stage to participate in the tossing. Mrs Kong then gave a short speech which reminded all CJC-ians of the imporLance of family.

Lastly, Home Tutorial Councillors presented their teachers with oranges on behalf oftheir class, providing a warm end to an exciting concert which provided all students an insight into the Chinese culture and stressed the value of family.

Literature Film Night February-1E

Literature Film Night is one of the unique events in CJC's calendar. For one night, all Hz Literature students come together to dress up as characters from their literature texts and watch film adaptations of their texts. The theme for this year's film night was "Women VS Women", based on the theme for Literature Paper 5, Women in Literature. The films, Tess of the D'Urberuilles and The Taming of the Shreus,were screened in LTz. After the screening of certain scenes of each film, there was a short presentation by Mr David Fahy and Mr Rupert Glascow on the significance ofeach scene and points of consideration, such as how true the film adaptation was to the book. During the intermission, food was served and students from each class presented their costumes and concepts to the Literature teachers, who doubled asjudges for the night. At the end of it all, the winners for the Best Dressed Award were announced. Special mention went to Darren How of zTog who came dressed up as Stanley ftomThe Birthday Party.In 3rd place was Gabriel Seow of zTor, while znd place went to zTo3. The top

prize for the night went to zTrr for their ingenious interpretation and amalgamation of both texts while keeping in line with the theme for the night, Women VS Women. It was a memorable night for all involved as it gave our Literature students room for creativity and greater depth in understanding their texts better.

Annual Gross Gountry lx4arclt2

The annual CJC Cross Country took place at a different venue this yearBedok Reservoir. And that was not the only change. This year, the college

tried out something completely different from all the previous Cross Country events. For the first time, JCz Sports Leaders were given the

opportunity to organise the event entirely by themselves. They did a fantastic job for the event went smoothly and successfully. Like all of the previous Cross Country events, the students were split into competitive and noncompetitive categories. The Boys' Competitive runners blazed the trail first, followed by the Girls' Competitive runners. After all the Competitive runners ran, the Fun Run began.

After everyone had run, the Awards Ceremonybegan. This year, it was given a twist. Instead of inviting Mrs Kong or Ms Khng to present the awards, the Sports Leaders came up with an ingenious idea: to let the Noodle King uncle MrTan andAunty Amy from the Co-op present the medals to the winners. This was to honour them for their services to the school, as well as to let them know that their efforts were being appreciated. For the JCr Girls' Competitive category, Isabel Lim Pinxiu (rTo+) came in first. For the JCr Boys' Competitive category, Aldrich Lim Jing Hong (rTzz) clinched the top prize. Sumathi D/O Gunasundram (zT3o) won first prize for the JCz Girls' Competitive category, while Gabriel Isaac Goh (zToz) was the fastest JCz Boy.

For the Costume Competition, the theme was "Join The Family, Live The Legacy", so most of the costumes were based on iconic places in CJC, as well as icons. Representatives from various classes paraded on stage with all sorts of costumes, such as the Lightning Alert, the CJC Flame, Grand Stand, even as Mr Tan Jek Suan! Ultimately, the top prize went to

zTt4's Noodle King, who even got a special treat (a free bowl ofnoodles)

from the Noodle King himself! All in all, this event could not have been possible without the Sports Leaders, as well as the ODAC members and the P.E. Department. Kudos to them for making the event a true success!

Student Leaders Appreciation Ceremony May 18

The college came together to honour the efforts and services that the Student Leaders of CJC had contributed during their course of

leadership. The ceremony started with the opening h1'rnn Lead Me Lord, Ied bY the Music Ministry. Father Leslie Raj, the College Chaplain, then led the opening prayer, which was followed by a Scripture reading by Claire Ann Abraham of zTr9. Jonathan Soong, the President ofthe 36th Student Council, was then invited onstage to reflect on behalf ofthe Student Leaders on their term of seruice. Subsequently, Father Raj led student representatives and teachers in the community prayers for outgoing leaders.

Mrs Christine Kong in her address thanked the Student Leaders for all their serwices rendered to the school. The Jz Sports Leaders were

highlighted for being the pioneer batch of students to take control of the planning ofthe Cross Country Event earlier in the year.

Teachers' Day August-19

The morning started off on a bright note, as students and teachers happtly

tucked into their pot luck sessions. Some classes whipped uPhomemade treats for their Home Tutors while others had their very onm mini Teachers' Day concert. Everyone, including the Heads of DePartment, shared our moments of ioy, laughter and happiness, which helped set the tone for the celebrations throughout the day. The most eagerly anticiPated segment of the day was the concert. A myiad of artistic talent on display wowed the audience, and it ranged from the likes of an upbeat percussion performance to a rousing rendition of CJ Dream'. Of course, there were also the personality awards given to various teachers voted by students. However, what stood out was a moving video tribute to thank all teachers for their unwavering efforts in helping us tide over the most difficult of times. Different students shared their memories of their teachers and expressed their gratitude and heartfelt warm wishes. The celebration ended with the HTCs of

The theme of the ceremonythis year was'Light Up the World'as our graduands were encouraged to live the college's values and make a difference

in the world in years to come. The ceremony began with the prayer service led by Father Raj, followed by a video capturing memorable moments of our students' two years spent in CJC. In her address, Mrs I(ong praised the class of zoro/zorr for new achievements, such as having the largest number of participants in the Youth Olprpic Games, being the first in CJC to be in the OBS Global Programme and the pioneers in organizing the Sporls Carnival and the Annual Cross Country. Colours Awards were presented to our athletes and certificates of appreciation were given to the JCz Home Tutorial Councillors. The Outstanding Contribution Award went to zTz5 while the Outstanding Home Class Award was won by zTtz. The valedictorians this year were Bryan Lee from zTro and Marie Therese Siew from zTrz. The ceremony ended with the JCz Home Tutors presenting graduation pins to their students.

Badminton is a sport that requires more than just physical strength, stamina and agility. It demands dedication, perseverance and a focused mind. As such, preparations for the 2011 season began early, under the guidance of our coach, Mr. Simon Koh and teachers-in-charge, Mr Wee Wee Chau, Ms Rena Peh and Mr Foo Chee Tuang.

With the Pilot Pen National Inter-Schools Badminton Championships in May, training was intensive. The team played several friendly matches to gain experience and confidence prior to the competition. In the Championships, both the Boys' and the Girls'teams put up a valiant effort against all schools we competed with. Although we fell short of advancing to the top

fourth placing, the Badminton team displayed team spirit, as well as great sportsmanship. 2011 has definitely been an exhilarating year for us and the experiences gained have been

unforgettable.

It was another busy and fruitful year for the Library Society. From visits to various libraries, from the conventional like Toa Payoh Community Library to the more unusual arts collection at

library@esplanade, to organizing college-wide events, such as the

Spellathon, Library Society members can tell you they have'been there and done

that'. The annual CCA Bazaar began the year, resulting in the healthy expansion of the Library Society. We started our journey with the provocative and compelling movie screening of 'One flew over the Cuckoo's Nest', a book turned into a

movie. Day-to-day activities included updating the notice boards,

maintaining bookshelves and helping the college librarians, Mdm Jalikha and Ms Ng. Students also parlicipated in Bookworm sessions, sharing reflections on new reading and old favourites. JC1 students managed the organization. advertising,

publicity and implementation of the successful GP Spellathon, in which the whole JCr cohort participated. A highlight of the year was the 'Meet the Author Session', with renov,ned Singaporean poet, Aaron Lee Soon Yong, as our guest. Other similarly informative events, such as the database workshop at Toa Payoh

Race, where teams from SJI and CHIJ Toa Payoh were invited to participate in a fun-filled afternoon of problem solving and learning more about the college and the Al6vel Mathematics syllabus. The Society aims to continue this syrrergy with our affiliated secondary schools and

build upon this platform for sharing the fun of Mathematics beyond the college. The Society also went on a learning journey to the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore, where the members gained valuable knowledge of Singapore's tax history and also learnt from the tax officers how statistics is applied in their field of work. In order to deepen the knowledge in statistics and also to explore the

analysis ofreallife data, the Society sent the entire batch ofits JC r students for the zorr NUS Statistical Poster Competition. In preparation for the competition, many members also attended the NUS Statistics Enrichment Camp. The topics researched on included global issues such as "Is Education a Privilege or a Right?" and "Corruption VS Production". The submission by Chloe Chay, Aden Yeo, Jason Lou and Lee Chun Chie of zTr3 won the 3rd Prize in the Junior College Category. 2011 has been a year ofgreat change for the Mathematics Society and the members are all ready to welcome the future which awaits them in zorz.

Science Honours membership saw a huge increase with the merging with the Astronomy Club. This year also saw a few firsts for the society. The CJC team, headed by Exco member, Thineskrishna S/O Anbaras, (zTrB) made it to the finals at the Sembcorp

Water Technology Competition. In the

true spirit of collaboration and support, some of the society's members helped the team in the preliminary rounds. At the Nanyang Research Programmme (enrichment category), we bagged r gold and 3 silver awards. Our president, Meng Shi Ze, was the gold award recipient. For the next research programme, the one CJC student selected (Lim Chee Chin) came from our society. At the Local Science Research Programme byA"Star, our member, Marie Siew (zTtz), an A*Star JC Award Scholar, did us proud when she was selected to present her research project at the Closing Ceremony of the programme. Our main aim is to build a team with a strong spirit, ahighlevel of physical fitness coupled with ball skills while plapng a fun and challenging game. Training comprises 3 components ballwork, body-building and fitness. MrAdrian Ho, who is overall-incharge ofthe Soccer squad, trains the team on stamina and physical fitness. Mr Lucas D'Cruz guides the players in proper dieting and gym training while Mr Clement Teo is hired bythe college to train the squad in technique, skills and strategy. This year marked the birth of Strategy Games Club, a merger of Bridge and Chess Clubs. As both clubs have been functioning separately for more than 10 years, it was a challenge to combine training and competitions calendars, as well as to bond the existing members of the Clubs. There was also the problem oftraining venues as the combined strength was about 6o members. Neveftheless, the Exco and the members worked together to make the meetings interesting and meaningful.

The highlights of the Club calendar were the annual CJC

Inter-college Bridge Tournament on z May and the Intra-college Chinese Chess Competition held

during the Mother Tongue Week. This year's Inter-college Bridge had z6 teams from 7 colleges taking part. The Chinese Chess competition also saw more than 6o students pitting their skills against each other.

In the days leading up to the zolr SYF Central Judging of Concert Bands, the band participated in significant events such as Limelight at the Esplanade. The JCrs, who were new to the band, performed under the guidance of our more experienced JCzs, as well as our

highly talented conductor, Mr Alvin Seville. As such, the performance was a huge success. Subsequently, it was time to prepare for the SYF. It was a gruelling and exhaustive period of intensive practice. Despite that, the Band

continued to uphold the spirit of 'ohana', which means that we are family, no one gets 1eft behind. With the spirit of ohana kept strong, our members gave their all and clinched a Gold Award, making us one of onlY 3 bands to be given this honour. The JCzs have now passed their leadership to the JCrs during the Band's r3th Investiture, marking the beginning of a new generation of leaders.

We star.ted the year with the recruitment of our new batch of bowlers during the Open House and the CCA Bazaar. We received an over"whelming response from the Jts. Our team bonded very quickly and worked very hard before the National

'A' Division Bowling Championship, enduring rigorous training sessions three times a week. To gain experience and toughen our mental capabilities prior to 'A' Division, some of the bowlers also participated in the National Age Group Competition. Keith Lee, our captain, did us proud when he was ranked 9th in the overall individual and qualified for the Masters' event. In the'A' Division Championship, despite facing the odds against stiffcompetition and with our members injured, our hard work finally paid offwhen our team achieved exceptional results. Both our Girls' and Boys' teams attained overall 5th placing and seeded in next year's 'A' Division. This is a remarkable achievement for CJC Bowling and it would not have been possible without the help and support from our school, coaches and teachers-in-charge. We look forward to repeating or improving our achievements in the

future.

The volleyball team went into zort with a host of changes to our administration, coach and training facilities. We welcomed new teachercoordinators and coach and an indoor court was installed in the school auditorium. With these, we were able to focus more on training and developing our team camaraderie. An array of friendly matches was organised with various institutions to

prepare for the National'A' Division Volleyball tournament. We trained hard but were unlucLY not to have finished at a higher position. While our results may not reflect our teams'true talent, we will always remember this quote - "Winning is not everything, but the effort to win is." We can hold . _ our heads high as we played with grace and

composure, showing sportsmanship and maturity.
