PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE Dear CJCians, We bid farewell to the JC2s with this Graduation Issue. Thank you, seniors, for sharing two years with the CJ family. The Class of 2021 will always be remembered for your grit, and passion, and most importantly, resilience and adaptability as you overcame many challenges arising from the Covid pandemic in 2020 and 2021. To all our JC2s, treasure the friendships that you have forged with your peers and the connections you have built with members of the CJ community. May the enriching learning experiences you have encountered prepare you for the future as you continue leading and serving as Thinkers with a Mission, and Leaders with a Heart. We wish you all the best in your exciting journeys ahead. Continue to scale new heights of learning, leadership and service. Reach out to others in the spirit of humility and service and make a positive impact in the community. As you prepare for the upcoming A-Levels, it is our hope that the values of Truth and Love continue as the foundation of your growth and development in the journey of life. May God’s blessings be with you always. In Veritate et Caritate Mrs Phyllis Lim Principal

SALUTATIONS MY FELLOW CJCIANS! 2021 has been a rollercoaster of a journey for us. With Singapore being on track to opening up at the start of the year, we were on track to having so many events in college such as Rockafella and the Sports & Aesthetics Carnival. Unfortunately, COVID-19 cases in Singapore went up, and these events were called off. This brought on a few necessary changes in the form of Safe Management Measures (SMM) that required morning assembly to be held in our home rooms instead of the Piazza, and group sizes during PE lessons were scaled down five per group. Despite all these setbacks, the growth mindset of CJCians allowed us to bloom as a college community, motivating one another to persevere with school life. In these tough times, the teachers and staff of CJC have been working tirelessly to help us adapt to the ever changing situation. On behalf of all CJCians, we would like to thank you for all the hard work. To the JC2s, thank you for being the guardian angels for us JC1s, helping us assimilate into CJC since day one. We really appreciate all the effort that you have put into mentoring us during Orientation, CCA sessions, and even keeping in touch with us after CCA stood down. We appreciate the advice that you have given us on JC life, and wish you the best of luck for the GCE A-Level Examinations! Lastly, on behalf of the 47th Student Council, I would like to thank you all for the support you have given us through your active participation in college events planned by us. We assure you that there will be more events that are coming up, so please look forward to that. The path ahead may be filled with trials and tribulations, but it is my belief that we, as one CJ Community, will be able to press on and emerge victorious at the end of our journey here - having spent the best two years of your life in CJC.

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR HOUSE CAPTAINS Albert House I would like to express my gratitude for being given this chance to be the Captain of Albert House. The challenges that come from adjustment to the pace of JC life, including a brief period of full Home-Based Learning (HBL) has made 2021 a tough year for all of us. Through all the adversity, I hope that you face it with courage and resilience. As members of Albert House, I wish each and every one of you an enjoyable time in CJC. Never give up and always do your best! Nurul Iman Syed Masood (1T17)

Joseph House Challenge is what got me here. Yet, for many, including myself, challenges seem like an insurmountable mountain. Looking up at this mammoth obstacle deters many, yet it is the same thing that has made me grow to be better. Thank you Mr Fairuz, Mr Chew, my team of Sports Leaders (SL) and my House members for giving me the chance to step out of my comfort zone and to prove myself. My hope for all Joseph House members is for you to never be afraid to push your personal boundaries, to go beyond, to challenge and to conquer for your personal growth. It can be scary and inevitably, one might feel like the struggle may not be worth it. Think of the many times you have felt this way about a situation, and yet, were still able to get through it. Challenges, especially in JC, will be omnipresent and inescapable. But never forget that Joseph House is here for you. As members of Joseph House, let’s give our best in all that we do, stand united in all that we may face and ultimately, be proud to play an active part in our community. Our experiences are ours to shape, so let’s make the most out of it. Together, as one house! Claudia Ng Hui Lin (1T05)

Michael House Before stepping into CJ, the nerves had already set in. Like everyone else, I was anxious about fitting in and adjusting to the new environment. The moment I walked into the college grounds, I was welcomed by our OGLs screaming the “CJ Burning Hot” cheer and was struck by a sense of familiarity. As I went through Orientation, it developed into a feeling of comfort and belonging. This continued to grow through daily interactions — as simple as spending break time with my friends and the countless ‘6:45 AMs’ with my Sports Leaders (SLs). In the time I have spent in CJ, I have been subjected to the stress and rigours of JC life. However, the pressure has been lifted through my daily experiences with my peers and teachers that have been assuring and affirming. I trust that all of you might have found your #whycj. Patrick House As Captain of Patrick House, it is heartening to know that I am constantly supported by my team of Sports Leaders and the members of the House. To me, Patrick House is not just a name, but one family that I envision to grow with. With students of different abilities and interests, I am ready to support my peers through providing platforms for them to be recognized and affirmed. Despite the challenges that we might face along the way, I hope that we will be able to depend on one another and to overcome any adversities together. Just like the Patrick House motto, ‘United we soar, Divided we fall’. There might not be a single definition of a ‘team’, but as long as we work together, the sky will be our limit, and Patrick House will continue to soar to greater heights. Carina Tay Wen Xi (1T02)

Celebrating the Singapore Spirit in CJ! Text by Alexandria Ee (1T24)
There was an audible and visible buzz in the air as CJCians headed to their classes for morning assembly and to observe a virtual celebration of Singapore’s National Day. We did not let the current Safe Management Measures (SMM) dampen our spirits and continued with a spectacular line-up of activities, including a virtual concert. The official celebrations kicked off with the National Day Observance Ceremony where students representing the various uniformed groups participated in a solemn march-in with the national flag. In this year’s celebration, our Minister for Education, Mr Chan Chun Sing delivered an inspiring speech that celebrated how Singaporeans have shown tremendous tenacity and care for those in need, particularly in these times.
6
Our Principal, Mrs Phyllis Lim, also shared a similar sentiment in her address, expressing her hope for the CJ spirit to continue shining forth so that the CJ community can emerge stronger as one. CJCians were treated to an innovatively curated ‘Amazing Race’, which had all classes competing to score on trivia questions related to Singapore. Classes had to complete a myriad of challenges, including one that required participants to spell ‘Sentosa’ using their bodies! Clearly, everyone had a ball putting their detective skills to use as well as being entertained by the creativity of their classmates being human paintbrushes.
No National Day Celebration is complete without a musical component, and this year’s celebration culminated in a CJ Celebrates E-Concert hosted by Amanda Poon (1T21). The concert showcased four of our very own performing arts CCAs, namely Guzheng, Guitar Ensemble, Dance, and Drama Society, sharing not only their talents but also their struggles rehearsing despite constraints brought about by the pandemic. Indeed, this celebration served as a good reminder for all CJCians on the importance of a strong Singaporean identity and spirit in the face of adversity.

WELCOME TO THE CJ FAMILY FATHER JUSTIN YIP, COLLEGE CHAPLAIN Text by Samreen Kaur Gill (1T06)
MS JOYS LIN, EDUCATION & CAREER GUIDANCE (ECG) COUNSELLOR
Text by Athena Yang (1T16) In Term 2, CJC welcomed Father Justin Yip as our new College Chaplain. In this role, Father Justin shares that he models his priesthood after Jesus Christ the good shepherd. “I spend a lot of time getting to know the staff and students of CJ through our conversations in the canteen and by being available for them. Not just to talk about faith matters but also to talk about their lives.”
Ms Joys Lin joined the CJ family as our first full time ECG Counsellor this year. Ms Lin comes with a rich experience in the education sector in her previous occupation in student recruitment where she often interacted with high school students. She finds great meaning in helping students to find their direction and purpose in their careers, especially since there were no ECG counsellors for students when she was in school. CJ’s warm and friendly culture has made it easy for her to adapt to her new workplace. She finds CJCians articulate in her interactions with them. Ms Lin advises CJCians to keep exploring and finding new experiences. Whether they be lessons or job-shadowing opportunities, she encourages students to experiment as it could aid their self-discovery. To students who are afraid to explore due to family expectations, she says that exploring can help them to find their interests, which can also give family members reassurance as students are more confident in what they want to achieve in their careers.
He believes that it is important that he reaches out to both Catholics and non-Catholics in the college community. His hope is for CJCians to be open to experiences of growth in all facets of human life.
One of the most common issues that CJC students are experiencing is in choosing a career path. She assures them that they are not alone in facing this issue. After all, “Life is a journey, not a destination.”
“The Catholic faith invites us to fulfill the potential that God has created us with. It’s a lifelong journey but at the same time it’s a journey worth taking.” Father Justin is open to conversations with anyone, should they need some guidance or a listening ear. He is available on Tuesday mornings and Friday afternoons. His advice to CJCians in traversing the challenges of JC life is reassuring. “Don’t keep these struggles to yourself. Know that there are people who are willing to carry these ‘burdens’ with you.”
