PENTECOST THE “BIRTH” OF STEWARDSHIP Dear Parishioners,

A

s we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost on May 23, which is one of the most significant events in the life of the Church, I can’t help but relate the outpouring of the gift of the Holy Spirit upon the first disciples as “the birth of stewardship.”

As a stewardship parish, we have come to understand it in our personal lives and our parish life as the work of the Holy Spirit, active and inspiring us to be the disciples Jesus called us to be, just as He did those very first disciples.

It just makes sense to once again realize and acknowledge the work of the Holy Spirit in our decisions to be authentic disciples of Jesus Christ.

As every parent knows, birth brings new life to every family, and the “birth of stewardship” here in our parish has brought new life to us, personally and communally, and continues to do so. We had a “Pentecost event” when the message of stewardship was first brought to our parish, and it hasn’t been the same since.

Many curious people of our parish and from around the country ask the question, “How did all of this begin?” The only answer is, “moved by conversion, we knew stewardship was going to be the ‘plan’ for our future as disciples and as a parish.” It makes sense.

For some, like me, it took a conversion of sorts to move us from unbelievers to believers, and from fear or suspicion to courage and confidence in the values and ideals of stewardship. Reading the accounts of the Acts of the Apostles, it wasn’t much different for them. Their experience is our experience and continues to encourage us to be open to the Holy Spirit at work in our lives. That “Spirit” renews the “Pentecost event” in each of us, as we practice discipleship as we know it through the stewardship way of life.

Also, as with each new birth, the life that 2

begins needs to be nourished, nurtured and loved. Through our understanding of the four pillars of parish stewardship — hospitality, prayer, formation and service — we each are called to nourish, nurture and love our parish family with the gifts we bring to each other. And without ever really knowing how much of an impact we have on each other’s spiritual lives, we trust the Holy Spirit to continue the “good work of faithful stewardship” in each of us and to those around us. Isn’t that what the first Pentecost event started, and isn’t that what you see in our parish, especially since our own “birth of stewardship?”

God has blessed our parish family and continues to do so, as the Holy Spirit continues to pour out gifts upon us and send us forth to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ. We are indebted to Catholic Stewardship Consultants, led by Eric McArdle, Katie Henkel, and their team for their spirited guidance and excellent professional support for the last three years in birthing and growing stewardship culture in our parish community and across the nation.

As we grow and mature in our stewardship efforts, how fortunate we are that the stewardship way of life has become our way of life. May we always give thanks to God for the Holy Spirit’s gift to each of us — for, when we do, it seems only natural to be inspired to live discipleship as it was intended to be lived in the first disciples and in each of us.

Como parroquia de corresponsabilidad, hemos llegado a entenderlo en nuestra vida personal y en nuestra vida parroquial como la obra del Espíritu Santo, activo e inspirándonos a ser los discípulos que Jesús nos llamó a ser, tal como lo hizo con esos primeros discípulos. Several years later, Anna and her children moved to Omaha, and God brought Alvaro into their lives.

“We didn’t start dating right away because of my past, I was scared of men,” Anna says. “We would just talk and every time he’d invite me to go out, I’d say, ‘yes,’ and then that day, I would call back and say I don’t have a babysitter, because I had second thoughts.”

However, in time, Anna’s heart softened. The couple had two more children, and began sporadically attending Mass in Omaha, where they had their children baptized.

“Alvaro was born Catholic and he would go to Mass with me, but we didn’t practice anything else,” Anna says. “We started going to Mass because we needed to baptize our kids, and they required us to be there.

That’s how we got pulled into going to church.”

Several years later, the family moved to Carter Lake, and it wasn’t long before Anna found Fr. Joel McNeil — literally — knocking on her door.

“One day, I was at home and a man knocked on my door and said, ‘I’m looking for Anna — is she around?’” Anna says. “I open the door and I saw his collar — that he was a priest. And he said, ‘I’m Fr. Joel, I heard you’re from Texas and you speak Spanish and you’re Catholic?’ And I was like, ‘Everything, but Catholic — I don’t practice anything.’”

Fr. Joel shared with her his plans to begin a Spanish Mass at Our Lady of Carter Lake, and asked Anna to help him.

“We talked about my situation and me being mad at God and he told me that everything was going to be okay,” Anna says. “He started talking to me about forgiveness and how God forgives us, and I started the process of healing and forgiveness with myself, with God, and my surroundings. It was not easy — it was a long process. But we started our involvement with church then and there.”

Within weeks, Fr. Joel had trained Anna as a sacristan and lector, and she began coordinating the Spanish Masses at Our Lady of Carter Lake.

When Fr. Joel realized how many children from the area were not receiving faith formation, Anna 4

worked with him to arrange bus transportation for the children so they could attend classes. Step by step, she became more and more involved in the life of the parish.

“I started losing all that negatively I had inside and letting go,” Anna says. “I said, ‘I will do this because I love God and He loves me, and this is where I belong and where I want to be.’ I started losing that hole that I’d felt in my soul.”

Five years ago, Anna and Alvaro moved to Corpus Christi when the Spanish Masses at Carter Lake became too small to be sustainable, and, at the request of the pastor, began to coordinate all the training for sacristans and altar servers in the larger community.

And yet, after all this time, serving and being active in the life of the parish, something was still missing.

Although Anna no longer doubted God’s presence in her life, she still longed to be fully reconciled with Him and united with Him fully in the True Presence of the Eucharist. So, with the help of Fr. Tom, Anna completed the annulment process for her previous marriage, and this past January, Anna and Alvaro had their marriage convalidated and blessed in the Church. For Anna, not only was it was beautiful moment for her marriage, but a moment of long-awaited union with Christ in the Blessed Sacrament.

“Fr. Tom was the one behind me getting all of this taken care of,” says Anna of the annulment process. “I said, ‘I’m not going to make God wait for me any longer, He’s been waiting for me for so long — He’s waiting for me at His table, and I want to be part of His table, at His feast.”

Anna encourages her fellow parishioners who may not be married in the Church to consider what steps they need to be fully reconciled with God and their community.

“I will encourage all couples to come forward to your pastor and get the information you need,” Anna says. “Something can be done.

Don’t take it from your neighbor or cousin or friend — come to the person who knows what can be done.”

As for Anna and Alvaro, they now look forward to all the new ways that God is inviting them to serve the parish, as a couple.

“We felt that we had our pastor and our church backing us up in everything in our lives, and now we have God backing us up in everything in our lives,” Anna says. “Now He comes with us everywhere — He’s inside us. I tell Him when I take Communion, “Now You’re with me — I don’t only walk with your Word, I walk with You inside of me.’”

A Blessing to All

ome of us have busy schedules that don’t allow much time for direct involvement in church ministry. Or, for some of us, leaving our homes isn’t a possibility, so volunteering at church is tough. But every single one of us has time and space to pray. So, the Prayer Line Ministry is available and accessible to all!

Dee Harrison took over this ministry about a year and a half ago, after her sister, Kathy Waltrip, passed away. The Prayer Line has been a ministry for as long as Dee can remember.

This is a simple, but profound and important ministry. When someone is in need of prayers, they call Dee. She has a list of about 10 people she calls, and they, in turn, call the next person on the list. Each person has one name to call. Marie Anderson also hangs the names on the doors of the parish, to get even more people praying.

“This helps increase the reach and spread of our prayers,” Dee says.

As Christians, we truly believe in the power of prayer. So, it’s only fitting to have an entire ministry devoted to praying for healing, from car accident injuries, to cancer or COVID-19. All of our parishes fall under this ministry. In addition, those being prayed for do not need to be members of our parishes or Catholic.

“A lot of people who have been on the Prayer Line have said they believe all the prayers helped with their healing,” Dee says. “Some have reached out to share what a blessing this was for them.”

The beauty of this ministry is many members keep praying for the person, long into the future.

“If someone calls a second time to be in the Prayer Line, I always tell them they don’t have to — once a name is in the list we pray for the person forever.” Dee says. “But, we will, of course, spread the word again.”

Dee wants everyone to know a person can chose to remain anonymous on the Prayer Line — for instance, if they don’t want people to know they are sick.

“We all need prayers,” Dee says. “This is one way to take a weight off people’s shoulders when they need to focus on healing.”

Sometimes, it can be hard to ask for prayers when they are needed, while some may simply be unsure of how to ask. The Prayer Line is an easy way to spread the power of prayer throughout our parish and community — as Jesus said in Matthew 18:20, “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”

La Línea de Oración es una manera fácil de difundir el poder de la oración en nuestra parroquia y comunidad, como dijo Jesús en Mateo 18:20: “Porque donde dos o tres están reunidos en mi nombre, ahí estoy yo en medio de ellos.”

Dee señala que algunos miembros de la Línea de Oración se comunicarán y rezarán un Rosario al mismo tiempo desde sus hogares. Entonces, este ministerio es ideal para alguien que está demasiado ocupado para involucrarse en la iglesia o no puede salir de su casa.

“Esto es algo simple y algo que la gente puede hacer para mantenerse involucrada con la parroquia,” dice Dee. “De eso se trata la mayordomía.” ¡Siempre podemos estar seguros de que las oraciones del Ministerio de la Línea de Oración están siendo escuchadas!
