“I am very close to the Virgin Mary,” she says. “Above all, I love the Holy Mass, and after that comes the Rosary, little Jesus and St. Joseph. I just love the Rosary and I am always trying to pray it — I pray it as many times as I can each day. It is very, very special and beautiful. If we pray the Rosary slowly, contemplating the life of Jesus throughout each decade, the Holy Virgin will protect us from many evils.”

n estos días, es difícil ver a Guadalupe De La Cruz sin un rosario en sus manos - o sin amor por María en sus ojos.

“Estoy muy cerca de la Virgen María,” dice. “Sobre todo me encanta la Santa Misa, y después viene el Rosario, el pequeño Jesús y San José.

A Letter From Our Pastor

A Month to Turn to Our Lady of the Rosary Dear Parishioners,

D

ay by day, our heavenly Father provides spiritual food and graces to His beloved children, nourishing us on our earthly pilgrimage. October brings us the grace of the Holy Rosary, a prayer buried deeply in the heart of the Church, as one of its most precious treasures.

The Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, which takes place Oct. 7, is a commemorative feast established

by St. Pius V on the anniversary of the naval victory won by the Christian fleet at Lepanto. The victory was attributed to the help of the Mother of God, whose aid was invoked by praying the Rosary.

This victory revealed the power of the Holy Rosary more than ever. Catholics who were open to the inspirations of the Holy Spirit took with deep resolve the Rosary as their link to God. Pope St. John Paul II, in his 2002 Apostolic Letter, Rosarium Virginis Mariae, writes: “The Church has always attributed particular efficacy to this prayer, entrusting to the Rosary... the most difficult problems. At times when Christianity itself seemed under threat, its deliverance was attributed to the power of this prayer, and Our Lady of the Rosary was acclaimed as the one whose intercession brought salvation” (39).

Thus, not merely through the Rosary, but more significantly, through the woman behind the Rosary — the glorious Mother of our Savior, Christ the Lord — a wellspring of God’s love has been discovered.

Indeed, the Rosary is truly a way to discover Christ’s infinite love through the tender heart of His Mother.

“With the Rosary, the Christian people sits at the school of Mary and is led to contemplate the beauty on the face of Christ and to experience the depths of his love.

Through the Rosary the faithful receive abundant grace, as though from the very hands of the Mother of the Redeemer” (Rosarium Virginis Mariae, 1).

A great number of saints, such as Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who had a special concern for the preservation of the Christian family, sensed that its salvation would be through the Holy Rosary. And as Pope St. John Paul II wrote, “Today I willingly entrust to the power of this prayer... the cause of peace in the world and the cause of the family” (Rosarium Virginis Mariae, 39). Our Lady of Fatima, who pleaded with families to pray the daily Rosary, would agree with him!

Let us entrust everything to the Rosary along with the saints. As our hearts burn with hope, let us give to the Mother of God every concern that we bear, each cross we carry, piece by piece, worry by worry. She will be there to offer everything to our Heavenly Father, Whose care for each one of His children reaches beyond anything we could ever imagine.

Un Mes para Acudir a Nuestra Señora del Rosario Estimados feligreses,

D

ía a día, nuestro Padre celestial proporciona alimento espiritual y gracias a Sus amados hijos, alimentándonos en nuestra peregrinación terrenal. Octubre nos trae la gracia del Santo Rosario, una oración enterrada profundamente en el corazón de la Iglesia, como uno de sus tesoros más preciados.

La Fiesta de Nuestra Señora del Rosario, que tiene lugar el 7 de Octubre, es una fiesta conmemorativa establecida por San Pío V en el aniversario de la victoria naval ganada por la flota Cristiana en Lepanto. La victoria se atribuyó a la ayuda de la Madre de Dios, cuya ayuda fue invocada rezando el Rosario.

Esta victoria reveló el poder del Santo Rosario más que nunca. Los católicos que estaban abiertos a las inspiraciones del Espíritu Santo tomaron con profunda determinación el Rosario como su vínculo con Dios.

Así, no solo a través del Rosario, sino más Significativamente, a través de la mujer detrás del Rosario, la gloriosa Madre de nuestro Salvador, Cristo Señor, se ha descubierto una fuente del amor de Dios.

El Rosario es verdaderamente una manera de descubrir el amor infinito de Cristo a través del tierno corazón de Su Madre.

“Con el Rosario, el pueblo cristiano se sienta en la escuela de María y es llevado a contemplar la belleza del rostro de Cristo ya experimentar la profundidad de su amor. A través del Rosario los fieles reciben abundante gracia, como de las manos mismas de la Madre del Redentor ”(Rosarium Virginis Mariae, 1).

Un gran número de santos, como la Beata Madre Teresa de Calcuta, que tenía una preocupación especial por la preservación de la familia cristiana, intuyeron que su salvación sería a través del Santo Rosario. The First Pillar of Parish Life: Liturgy

T

The Source of Our Catholic Faith

he Catechism of the Catholic Church calls the Eucharist “the source and summit of the Christian life” (1324). During the Liturgy, we celebrate the Eucharist, hear readings and pray as a community.

Fr. Denzil Vithanage has chosen Seven Pillars to focus on to make St. Patrick’s the best it can be. In this month’s newsletter, we are delving into the First Pillar of the Liturgy.

First, Fr. Denzil plans to continue with the beautiful celebrations of the Mass to which we have grown accustomed.

“Since the Liturgy is the summit of our faith, we want to make sure it is beautiful and holy,” he says.

He also hopes to do more teaching on the Liturgy and the sacraments, and to make sure all of our altar servers are well trained. Fr. Denzil also wants to be sure the art and environment at St. Patrick’s is beautiful — one way he will do this is by having the tabernacle moved to the middle of the sanctuary. He also wants our parish to provide more opportunities for adoration.

Deacon Ray Vann, who was ordained 2007, admits there are even times when he finds it hard to get out of bed and get ready for Mass.

“There has not been not one single time where I served at Mass or sat in the pews where I left saying I

wish I didn’t go,” he says. “There hasn’t been one single time. Every time I go, I am so happy I was there.”

Deacon Ray says there is nothing in the Catholic faith more important than the Liturgy. He assists with English and Spanish Mass. He also works with Baptism formation for parents and godparents. In addition, he serves in police chaplaincy.

“I wouldn’t be able to do my work without the foundation of the Liturgy and the strength I receive from it,” he says.

The closures of churches in the wake of COVID-19 led many to realize the power of in-person Mass, says Deacon Ray. He looks forward to continuing to show people the gift of the Liturgy.

“We hear the words of the Mass over and over, but rarely do we actually listen to what is actually being said,” he says. “There is such a richness there that feeds us.”

Deacon Ray says everyone who is a part of the Mass adds to it in a beautiful way. Fr. Denzil takes his time to make sure each Mass is beautiful and special.

“We are here for the beauty of the Mass,” Deacon Ray says. “God gives us so much beauty, let’s give some back to Him.”

l Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica llama a la Eucaristía “la fuente y cumbre de la vida cristiana” (1324).

Durante la liturgia, celebramos la Eucaristía, escuchamos lecturas y oramos como comunidad.

El Padre Denzil Vithanage ha elegido Siete Pilares para centrarse en hacer en San Patricio lo mejor posible.

En el boletín de este mes, profundizamos en el primer pilar de la liturgia.

Padre Denzil planea continuar con las hermosas celebraciones de la Misa a la que nos hemos acostumbrado.

of C olumbus Offer Valuable Opportunities for Service and Fellowship

I

f you ask Cory Lankford, Grand Knight of Fr. Fraher Council 3404 Knights of Columbus, why our parish men should join, his answer will be, “Why not?”

“There are lots of groups to join, such as Rotary or Lions, but as men of Catholic faith, what other group will have men who have the same values and are on the same page as you?” Cory asks. “The values on family life and abortion and what the Eucharist means to you, here’s unity.”

Cory was installed as Grand Knight on July 1, the traditional beginning of the Knights’ fraternal year.

As the new Grand Knight, he plans to work with Fr. Denzil to build council membership.

The Council consists of men from both St. Patrick and St. Andrew Parishes. The First and Third Degree members meet on the second Thursday of each month at St. Patrick and the Fourth Degree members meet the third Thursday of the month.

Council members not only enjoy fellowship, but they also enjoy beneficial activities, as well as fundraisers. The council prepares Christmas morning dinner for the Cloistered Contemplative Dominican Nuns at the Monastery of the Infant Jesus.

They also raise funds for the Joseph House, a care facility for those who are terminally ill, and also for the Pregnancy Help Center to make sure all needs are met.

Other Council activities include providing support for the Fiestas Patrias, such as the council’s donation this year of the first-prize 60-inch smart TV, as well as the prizes of a griddle set and a number of gift cards. The Council recently purchased a new lock and security system for the St. Patrick School.

They also raise awareness about abortion with their proclaiming of the Cemetery of the Innocents, to mark abortion deaths in Texas.

Throughout all the activities in which the Knights take part throughout the year, there is a strength that comes from their working together.

“Knights are stronger together,” Cory says. “We are Catholic men working together.”

i le preguntas a Cory Lankford, Gran Caballero del Padre Fraher Council 3404 Caballeros de Colón, ¿por qué nuestros parroquianos deberían unirse?

Su respuesta será: “¿Por qué no?”

“I don’t think there are fewer challenges today,” Cory says. “We need good, strong Catholic men who push the Church forward. And we have the ability to do it in a group. I’ve seen the Knights accomplish amazing things and I could not do it alone.”

Bring Your Gifts to the Spotlight!

he word “talent” often conjures up images of stage performers in the spotlight, captivating awestruck audiences with their impeccable musical or acting skills.

While these talented performers are certainly deserving of applause, the majority of the population sits hidden in the shadows, staring on in amazement while feeling overlooked — and perhaps wishing to possess such talents themselves.

But even when we feel overlooked and untalented, God knows better. As Christians, we are all called to dig deep and trust that we are uniquely blessed with valuable talents and abilities, even if our talents aren’t so obvious or don’t garner applause and accolades.

Along with “time” and “treasure,” “talent” is one of the “three Ts” of stewardship. Exploring our natural inclinations and preferences, especially when guided by the intricacies of our unique personalities, can unearth God-given talents.

“There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same spirit,” writes St. Paul in his First Letter to the Corinthians.

“There are different forms of service, but the same Lord.”

Some people have the gift of working peacefully with children. Equipped with patience and gentleness, they are able to guide young souls to the Lord. Yet, others shudder at the thought of a classroom full of 5-year-olds, and instead seek the quiet solace of behind-the-scenes tasks — cleaning the church, sewing altar cloths or stuffing envelopes.

Our interests and abilities are varied, and our volunteer options are endless, as we are called to give our talents back to God in loving service. Examine your heart and prayerfully discern your gifts, then direct those gifts towards serving the people of God. H. Jackson Brown, Jr., author of Life’s Little Instruction Book, once said, “Talent without discipline is like an octopus

If our gifts of talent are not guided by the discipline of prayer, just like an octopus on roller skates, we will get nowhere fast! Yet, if we keep our eyes on the goal of heaven and serve the Lord with joyfulness, our efforts will produce a bountiful harvest. In the words of St. Paul to the Corinthians, “Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will reap bountifully.”

The next time you sit quietly in the shadows behind a glaring stage spotlight, rest assured that your talents are no less impressive in the eyes of God, and will always be “applauded” when directed to the service of His people.

The 2021 Pumpkin Patch will run October 1-31 and will be open to the public. The school will be selling pumpkins to raise money for a variety of needs and projects. Every Saturday, there will be a different family activity at the Pumpkin Patch from 10:00-11:00 a.m.

are very kind and good. I pray for my fellow parishioners, and I know they pray for me as well. Our parish family brings us love and help in times of difficulties. The Church teaches us and brings us precious priests.”

Each year, Guadalupe joins three teams of parishioners in visiting people in their homes and praying the Rosary with them. They usually begin this effort in October and finish up on Dec. 11 — the eve of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

“We have done this for many years,” she says. “We visit 46 homes and pray 46 Rosaries total. We didn’t get to do it last year because of COVID, but I really enjoy it and I hope we can do it again this year.”

Guadalupe also enjoys giving her time and talent to those in need, such as by bringing Holy Communion to the sick, and praying for the deceased.

“I like to visit them, and enable them to receive Jesus, so He can help them bear their pain,” Guadalupe says.

“I want to bring them the peace and joy of Jesus. I also try to pray a Rosary Novena for the soul of almost every person from our parish who dies.”

Cada año, Guadalupe se une a tres equipos de feligreses para visitar a las personas en sus hogares y rezar el Rosario con ellos. Por lo general, comienzan este esfuerzo en Octubre y terminan el 11 de Diciembre, día de la fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe.

“I am always praying for them and trying to be a good example to them,” she says. “Several of my boys go to St. Patrick’s Church and they are very happy to spend a lot of their time there.”

Looking back on her life, 75-year-old Guadalupe can see the gracious hand of God at work in marvelous ways. With this in mind, she wants to give hope to those who need it most.
