Welcoming others with the love of Christ

As Scripture tells us in the Gospel of Matthew, when we reach out to invite a stranger into our community, it is Christ Himself whom we are inviting. Let us, therefore, be eager to invite and embrace the stranger — those within our parish walls who still may feel isolated and those on the margins in our wider community who wait for an invitation to join our parish family.

A CORE CHRISTIAN VALUE

Here at St. Mary on the Hill, we want to help every individual to know that they are welcome and wanted as a part of our Catholic family. The presence of hospitality can make a newcomer or a returning member of the church feel at home. Friends are welcomed with open arms and warm smiles. Visitors feel the genuine love present in a hearty “Welcome!”. Family members do not visit; they belong.

In terms of stewardship, hospitality is immensely important. The truth is, if someone doesn’t feel like they are wanted and appreciated, how will they receive the love of God through us? Hospitality opens the door to a person’s heart and allows him or her to receive joy, grace and love. For our parish to grow as a stewardship community, we must help everyone who walks through our doors feel like they truly have come home. We must make hospitality a cornerstone.

Seeking Christ with our Time

While many of us understand that prayer is an important element of the Christian life, most of us admit that it’s difficult to find a quiet moment to spend with God.

As Christians, we must remember that we cannot give what we do not have. In order for us to welcome others into the life of the Church, we need to make sure that our spiritual lives are properly in order. To become a more prayerful person, take inventory of how you spend the 168 hours in the week. Are you taking time to talk to God in prayer, to speak with Him as you would a friend?

Are you seeking His truth through reading the scriptures? Will you make Him first on your priority list so that you are able to give to others from the graces He has given you?

STRENGTHENING YOUR PRAYER LIFE

Set aside purposeful time each day to spend in prayer: thanking God for His blessings, asking for His help in difficult circumstances and reading scripture.

Receive spiritual nourishment in the Eucharist at least every Sunday and during the week as you are able.

“As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God’s varied grace” (1 Peter 4:10). Each of us has received gifts from God that we are to use in humble service. While many of us may not recognize the skills or abilities we have as gifts, they are a means by which we can give glory to God through serving each other. At St. Mary on the Hill, our ministries provide opportunities for us to serve God and others. From a warm smile to giving someone a warm meal, we are able to welcome others into the family of God by being Christ to them. Reaching out in love, while sometimes difficult, can be quite spiritually enriching! Will you take the time to ask God how you can best serve Him through the service of His children?

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE Seeking Christ with our Possessions

Throughout Scripture, we are taught to give to God our “first fruits” or the “choicest portion.” In modern speech, we might say that the first “line item” in the family budget should be returning a portion of our income to God. Both symbolically and in actuality, this is a powerful expression of God’s place in your life. “Where your treasure is, there also lies your heart” (Matthew 6:21). Will you take some time to reassess how you prioritize God in your finances?

“He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your resources and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way for great generosity, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God.”

WHY GIVE A PERCENTAGE OF INCOME?

We give the tithe (which means 10% of one’s harvest or income) because it is a Scriptural benchmark that has been honored since the early Church (see Malachi 3:10).

If you have difficulty reaching your goal, try increasing your giving incrementally, by one or two percent of income each year. Over time, you will find that the tithe is a reasonable goal that can be reached. Most importantly, you will know that you have been faithful in placing God first in everything, even in your finances.

Parish Mission Statement

St. Mary on the Hill Parish, a Catholic community, is committed to caring for God’s people through stewardship. We are bound together by the Eucharist, directed by the Gospel teachings and the teachings of the Church, enlightened by the Holy Spirit, and are committed to sharing in the ministry of Jesus Christ. As stewards, we will proclaim the Gospel, promote peace and justice, and use our time, talents, and treasure to advance God’s Kingdom.

Parish Membership

As a stewardship parish, we answer the call to discipleship by making a commitment of time, talent, and treasure. Our offertory funds the needs of the parish and service ministries, including St. Mary on the Hill Catholic School. To reach these goals, we ask that you strive to commit eight percent of your family income to your stewardship of treasure in thanksgiving for all the gifts that you have received. Working together, we provide an enriched parish life and programs to care for those in need. Our commitment is to each other and to Christ.

An active parishioner meets the following criteria

Is a registered active member of the parish for at least one year, attends Sunday and Holy Day Masses regularly, has a Stewardship commitment card on file at the church each year, pledging their time, talent, and treasure (eight percent of their family income), and honors those commitments, uses church envelopes weekly indicating regular Mass attendance.

ADORATION

Give your week a boost. Come visit Jesus for an hour of quiet time for prayer and reflection. Tell Him how your week is going, thank Him for His grace and guidance, praise Him for His many blessings, pray for a family member or friend, for patience for yourself, or sit quietly and adore Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Jesus is there ready to help if you ask. Commit to a day and hour each week. You do not need a sub if you cannot attend your hour. You can also register to be a visitor and come often. ALTAR SERVER

Altar servers (fourth grade and older) minister through serving at Mass and providing an example of service, devotion, and humility. They assist the priest and other ministers at the altar. Mothers of the altar servers help with the washing and mending of the cassocks and surplices worn by the altar servers.

ALTAR SOCIETY

Members of the Altar Society care for the altar linens used in the

Eucharistic celebration. Members also help decorate the church at Christmas and Easter.

EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION

LECTORS

“The lector is entrusted with the crucial task of making the Word of God come alive by proclaiming it for the Christian assembly” (Workbook for Lectors and Gospel Readers). Our parish lectors proclaim the Word of God at weekend and Holy Day liturgies. Lectors are high school age and older and are trained before they

begin their ministry. These ministers of the Word are committed to the study of the Scriptures and to prayer and preparation.

Music Ministry

CANTOR MINISTRY

Meets year-round.

Rehearsals: By appointment if needed. Vocalists are needed to lead the congregation in song at every Mass. Primary duties of cantors include announcing music, singing the Psalm, Gospel Acclamation, and other Mass parts. Cantors are trained by the Music Director, and scheduling is flexible both for practice and Masses. No experience is required.

PARISH CHOIR

Rehearsals: Wednesdays, 7–8 p.m.

The Parish Choir is the anchor and oldest musical group at St. Mary on the Hill. It is an adult mixed chorus and sings for the 10:30 a.m. Sunday Mass. The Parish Choir is open to everyone even if you have limited singing experience. Important choir skills are learned as you go, with help from the Music Director and choir members.

CHILDREN’S CHOIR

Meets in the Fall and Spring, rehearsal time TBD. Children who can read are invited to sing in the Parish Children’s Choir. Rehearsals are one hour per week during the Fall and Spring semesters. The choir will sing at some

Sunday Masses and Holiday Masses.

RESURRECTION CHOIR Meets year-round. Rehearsals: None

The Resurrection Choir Ministry gathers to sing for any of the funeral Masses which take place at St. Mary on the Hill. Membership is open to ALL, regardless of experience, and participation is flexible. Members of the Resurrection Choir are notified by the Music Director of upcoming funerals via email. The Resurrection Choir meets just before funeral services for instruction and warm-up. This is a very valuable ministry as an extension of our consolation and care for grieving families in the community.

CONTEMPORARY MUSIC MINISTRY

The St. Mary’s Contemporary Music Ministry welcomes youth (high school and up) and adults alike to lend their voices and other musical abilities (guitar, piano, violin, etc.) to this ministry. The Contemporary Music Ministry provides music for the 5:30 p.m. Mass on Sundays and sings at several other liturgies throughout the year. Please email for rehearsal times and additional information. SACRISTANS

This is a labor of love as you are setting the table for the Lord’s Supper. This includes unlocking the Sacristy and setting up the credence table for daily and weekend Masses.

USHERS

Ushers’ friendly greetings help set a welcoming impression as parishioners and guests enter our beautiful church. They assist with seating, as necessary, and with queuing during Communion. Ushers also tend to the collection for each Mass and ensure that bulletins are accessible. Visitors look for ushers to answer any questions they may have about St. Mary’s.

Faith Formation

The responsibility of the Faith Formation Ministries is to provide lifelong spiritual formation for parishioners and to spread the Good News of Christ to others.

The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program provides an environment where the children can explore their relationship with God using hands-on materials and is rooted in the Bible, the Liturgy of the Church.

CCD SUNDAY MORNING RELIGIOUS FORMATION

CCD is the religious formation program for parish elementary and middle school students who attend non-Catholic schools. Catechists are dedicated to helping students understand their faith, prepare them for the sacraments, and to become active members of the parish community.

MEN’S BOOK CLUB

Men’s book club is a study group, open to all men, that uses a format of reflection, prayer, and discussion questions. We usually meet on the first and third Saturdays of each month.

PARISH PARTNERSHIP ON DISABILITY

As a faith community, we must strive to be a welcoming community to all people. The ministry focuses on areas such as the accessibility of the church campus, assessing/responding to the needs of parishioners who have differing abilities, developing/ providing educational information about various disabilities, and developing strategies to link

parishioners who need assistance in getting to Mass and other church functions with possible transportation resources. Membership is open to anyone who wants to help create a more welcoming and inclusive atmosphere in our parish.

RETROUVAILLE

Retrouvaille (Rediscovery) offers tools needed to rediscover a loving marriage relationship. Retrouvaille is a live-in weekend and post-weekend program for married couples. The emphasis is on communication between husband and wife.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS (RCIA)

The RCIA process functions to educate adults about the Catholic faith and prepare them to enter the Catholic Church if they so desire. Weekly sessions are held from September through Easter. Inquirers who only want to understand more about the Catholic faith are also welcome. Meetings are led by the Pastor, Fr. Mark Ross.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL (VBS)

VBS offers a fun and exciting program to bring the youth close to Jesus through a weeklong, half-day summer program. Volunteers are needed to help decorate and help the children explore the Bible, prepare snacks, create their crafts, sing, and play games.

YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY OF AUGUSTA — SPIRIT & TRUTH

Spirit & Truth ministers to the young adult population for the Catholic parishes in the Augusta Deanery. This Catholic ministry seeks to bring young Christians into contact with Christ and His Church through faith, fellowship, and spiritual growth. We meet weekly, hosting guest speakers for a variety of faith-based discussions, as well as faith-based videos and other fun activities. At every meeting, we have a complimentary dinner, and we meet for group Mass monthly. Ages 18-35 are welcome. We meet on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. For more information, visit us at www.augustayam.org

YOUTH MINISTRY

The St. Mary Youth Ministry is for area middle and high school students interested in coming together to grow in their love for Christ through prayer, works of mercy, social interaction, and meaningful participation in the life of the Church and community. This program includes faith-sharing groups, social events, retreats, missions, trips, and works of mercy opportunities geared toward families and teens.

Volunteers help lead, supervise and/or assist with these events.

HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH (GRADES 9-12)

High School Youth meet once a week during the school year for fellowship, faith sharing, food and fun. Guys usually meet on Sunday evenings and the ladies usually meet on Wednesday evenings. We also do multiple trips as a group each year, such as our annual Ski for Life trip, a mission trip to Charlotte, NC, and a summer youth conference! MIDDLE SCHOOL YOUTH (GRADES 6-8)

APRON MINISTRY

The Apron Ministry operates under the umbrella of the Consolation Ministry. After a request is made for the services of the Apron Ministry, a team is assembled to assist with the “gathering” or reception, usually held in the home after the funeral. Apron ministers arrange all preparations, serve the food, and clean up. Blue aprons clearly designate these ministers. BEREAVEMENT BASKET

The Bereavement Basket Ministry provides support to our brothers and sisters in Christ during their time of mourning. A group of volunteers rotate weekly and are “on call” to deliver the Bereavement Baskets to the

families with funerals at St. Mary’s. The baskets are filled with breakfast items (cereals, coffee, juices, fresh fruit, etc.) and provide breakfast for the morning of the funeral.

CASSEROLES TO GO

Casseroles are made by parishioners for those in need of assistance with meals. Family members can come and get casseroles to take to those struggling with an illness, the homebound, those coming home after a hospital stay, or birth of a baby, and after the death of a loved one.

The Consolation Ministry is a group of parishioners dedicated to providing spiritual, emotional, and practical support to those who have had a death in the family. Consolation Ministers are trained. The mission of Family Honor is to provide a Catholic framework for the truth and meaning of sexuality, love, and family. PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY

Prayer shawl ministry is a gathering of parishioners who have a passion to serve others through prayer and the knitting and/or crocheting of a shawl.

This is a new ministry that began when one of our parishioners was given the comfort of being lifted in prayer through a blessed shawl when her son was in the hospital and, in turn, wanted to give that same comfort to others. This ministry has varying opportunities to get involved. First and foremost, we need parishioners who know how to crochet or knit or are interested in learning. Another way to participate is by donating yarn, needles, hooks, and packaging/gifting materials. If you are homebound, you can also participate by donating finished shawls to the parish office. We meet once a month on the first Saturday in the Senior Center. When we meet, sometimes we will have a specific person in mind but other times the shawls will be created with prayers of strength, healing, comfort, peace, etc., to be picked up by parishioners and given to those in need.

The Pro-Life Ministry engages in activities to restore respect for all human beings, from the moment of conception until natural death. Parish Organization

The Parish Council shall assist the parish pastor by deliberating and acting on matters pertaining to the spiritual, financial, and educational affairs of the parish, its management and operation, except in those matters explicitly limited by Church law. The Parish Council shall work with the parish staff and concern itself with all aspects of parish life including, without limiting the generality of the foregoing, the following areas: social, liturgical, and apostolic programs; evolvement of the longrange and immediate goals of the parish; the Christian formation of the parishioners (including formation as Stewardship parish); and involvement of the entire parish in the conduct of parish affairs.

In its work, the Parish Council shall be guided by the following principal objectives: the fostering of parish unity; the development and implementation of a unified program of renewal designed to promote the common good of the parish; the formation of the parish as a Stewardship parish; the coordination of all parish activities; the provision of adequate forums for dialogues among all members of the parish and between parish members in the spiritual and apostolic life; the promotion of diocesan and deanery activities and programs; and the assessment of the spiritual and temporal needs of the parish.

A staff member is assigned to work with the Parish Council. They should keep the Parish Council abreast of significant events within the diocese and deanery. They should also have the opportunity to seek advice and support from the Parish Council as needed.

Parent(s) must be registered members. Parents are required to attend a Baptism Preparation class, typically scheduled for the first Sunday of the month. It is recommended that godparents also attend. RECONCILIATION

Wednesday from noon- 1 p.m. and Saturday from 3:45-4:45 p.m. or by appointment. Reconciliation services are held one evening during Advent and one evening during Lent.

FIRST RECONCILIATION

The Sacrament of Reconciliation is usually received in second grade. The child must be baptized, have completed first-grade Religious Education, and be attending second-grade Religious Education classes. The family must be attending Sunday Mass regularly. Celebration of this sacrament is typically scheduled in January.

The Sacrament of Eucharist is usually received in second grade. The child must be baptized, have received the Sacrament of Reconciliation, have completed first-grade Religious Education, and be attending second-grade Religious Education classes. The family must be attending Sunday Mass regularly. Children receive First Communion in May.

CONFIRMATION

The Sacrament of Confirmation is usually celebrated in the fall of a student’s ninth-grade year. The person preparing for Confirmation must be baptized and have received First Eucharist. A student must have completed a Religious Education class and the family must be attending Sunday Mass regularly. Confirmation candidates attend Confirmation Preparation sessions and a retreat. The Confirmation date is set by the bishop and the pastor.

MARRIAGE

We are excited that you are preparing for the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony. Your first step in your preparation for the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony is to contact the Wedding Coordinator, Martha Kearns, at the

Church Office to begin the process at least four to six months in advance before setting your wedding date. In addition, all couples are required to attend a Marriage Preparation Weekend and meet several times with a priest to complete their marriage packet. Marriage Preparation Weekends are offered four times a year in the Augusta Deanery. PLEASE DO NOT RESERVE PLACES FOR RECEPTIONS/DINNERS UNTIL YOUR WEDDING DATE IS RESERVED ON THE PARISH CALENDAR – NOT ALL DATES AT THE CHURCH MAY BE AVAILABLE DUE TO PARISH EVENTS OR OTHER CONFLICTS.

ANOINTING OF THE SICK

Please contact the church office when a loved one is in the hospital or seriously ill, so a priest may visit as soon as possible. We invite all seriously ill parishioners to ask a priest to anoint them and pray for healing. You may want to include the Anointing of the Sick as part of your pre-surgery preparations.

ALTAR FLOWERS

Call the Church Office, 706-733-6627, several weeks in advance if you wish to donate flowers for the altar in honor of an anniversary, birthday, or in memory of a loved one.

BULLETIN

The bulletin is published weekly. The deadline is usually Monday at noon to submit information to appear in the following Sunday bulletin. Your written information can be sent to the church office via mail, fax, or email at smbulletin@stmaryonthehill.org. Rest in Peace announcements are published in the bulletin the week following a death. We normally only list registered family members with the deceased. Please check with the person before calling to add their name to the Prayer Request list. If you wish your name or the name of a loved one to remain on the list longer than two weeks, please contact the Church Office (706-733-6627). If you have a loved one on the prayer list, please call the office when their name can be removed.

CATHOLIC READING RACK

The Catholic Reading Rack in the narthex of the church has a wide selection of Catholic periodicals and Bible study guides. Envelopes are located on the reading rack for a donation that can be put in the next week’s collection.

CHURCH NURSERY

A nursery is provided during the Sunday 10:30 a.m. Mass in St. Anne’s Hall. It is available for children ages six months to Pre-K4. Parents who use the Church Nursery are asked to volunteer.

COLUMBARIUM

St. Mary on the Hill dedicated our columbarium on July 25, 2017. A columbarium is a structure like a mausoleum, except for cremains. The cremains are inurned into a niche. St. Mary’s columbarium has 408 double niches and 117 single niches. GIFT BEARERS

Individuals or families are invited to bring the offertory gifts to the altar during Mass. Please notify an usher before the Mass that you wish to bear the gifts.

HOMEBOUND

If there are parishioners who are homebound, in a nursing facility, or in the hospital and who wish for pastoral visits and Holy Communion, please contact the Parish Office by calling 706-733-6627. We rely on family members to notify us if there are parishioners to be visited. Due to the federal confidentiality guidelines for hospitals, we are not notified when parishioners are in the hospital. Therefore, we ask that you please call us if you would like a visit while in the hospital. If you anticipate a stay in the hospital, please let us know so we can keep you in our prayers.

The Marianite newsletter is usually published bi-monthly and is mailed to parishioners. It includes information about people, activities, and events in the parish and community. Suggestions for articles and/or pictures should be sent to smoth@stmaryonthehill.org

MASS CARDS

Mass Cards are available through the Church Office. Please come in person or send your request in writing. The customary stipend is $10 or more per Mass. Masses for the next year are available after Pentecost Sunday.

MEDICAL EMERGENCIES OR A DEATH

MOTHER’S DAY OUT/ PRE-SCHOOL

Our Mother’s Day Out and PreSchool program is available for children ages six weeks through the start of kindergarten. Your child is in a fun and loving environment where the Catholic faith is taught and lived. The program runs from August through May.

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE

In thanksgiving for God’s gifts, each household at St. Mary Church is asked to strive to give 10 percent of their income based on the biblical tithe — eight percent to St. Mary on the Hill Church, one percent to the Diocese of Savannah, and one percent to a charity. Contribution envelopes are mailed to your home address on a bi-monthly basis. Please use your envelope when you attend church, regardless of if there is a contribution in the envelope. If you contribute without your envelope, please include your envelope number on your check or use a blank envelope and your full name. Contributions are entered for the week they are received; therefore, it is not necessary to include the envelopes for the Sundays that you may have missed. Contribution statements are mailed quarterly and end-of the- year statements are provided for tax purposes. If you find an error in any of your statements, please notify the Church Office. Please remember to inform the Church Office of any address change as your envelopes are mailed bulk rate and are not usually forwarded by the post office. OUR CHURCH

St. Mary on the Hill Church is located at 1420 Monte Sano Ave. on the corner of McDowell St.

PARISH HALL

This facility is adjacent to the Church and is used for parishrelated activities.

PARISH OFFICE

The office is next door to the Parish Hall. The hours of business are Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. and Fridays, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. For Holy Days, holidays and summer hours consult the bulletin.

ST. ANNE’S HALL

This facility is located behind the Parish Hall. It houses the Nursery and Mother’s Day Out/PreSchool Program.

FR. CHARLIE’S HOUSE

This facility is located at 2504 McDowell St. and is used for small-group parish-related activities, Augusta Young Adult Ministry and couple counseling.

SCOUT HUT

This facility is located at the corner of Arsenal Ave. and McDowell St. ADORATION CHAPEL

The Chapel is attached to the St. Joseph Center on the corner of Monte Sano Ave. and Bellevue Ave.

ST. MARY ON THE HILL CATHOLIC SCHOOL

The school is located at 1220 Monte Sano Ave. It is an elementary school K-8th grade. The CCD program is held at the school on Sunday mornings.

SCHOOL GYM

The Gym is located behind St. Mary School on Arsenal Ave. The Gym is available for use by parishioners for parish-related activities.

ST. JOSEPH CENTER

This facility is located at the corner of Monte Sano Ave. and Bellevue Ave. It holds the Senior Center, the Media Center and school classrooms.
