CAIRNS AMATEURS CARNIVAL IS BACK
Country & city collide in Far North’s social event of the year
The Jewel of Racing Festival
Sapphire Jubilee celebrating 65 years Spring
“Increasing in popularity with each year and culminating in a record attendance of almost 600 guests in 2022, the ball is popular for its much-anticipated theme, magical under-the-stars setting on Cairns’ waterfront, quality entertainment, food, fireworks and more. Of all the events we present, the ball is reserved a special place in our hearts, and I think by its very essence captures the Cairns Amateurs spirit perfectly,” Mr Goodman said.
Stellar Cairns couple Alexis and Pasco Rogato are the exemplar of style for this year’s waterfront Sapphire Ball – the highlight marquee event of Cairns
Amateurs Carnival’s Sapphire Jubilee marking 65 years.
The Cairns Amateurs returns in 2023 with a jewel encrust program celebrating its Sapphire Jubilee and igniting 65 years of horse racing fashion, and pure springtime revelry from Thursday 7 to Saturday 9 September.
After posting a $3.5 million win for Cairns’ economy in 2022 with 6,441 carnival-goers and 8,598 visitor nights (source, Cairns Amateurs IER report) Cairns Amateurs Carnival is on track to deliver its most sophisticated and alluring line up of events targeting visitors from across Far North Queensland, Australia and New Zealand.
In unveiling the Carnival’s 65th anniversary theme Cairns Amateurs President David Goodman said all marketing and publicity will leverage from ‘The Jewel of Racing Spring Festival’ - a new, attention-grabbing brand destined to hit all the high notes with punters, fashionistas, and visitors. According to Mr Goodman coinciding with the theme announcement is the online and live launch of Cairns Amateurs’ all-new website, ticket sales and digital campaign.
“We have created the sparkling, blue sapphire theme to be the rich thread that connects each iconic event into one spectacular program including this year’s marquee highlight and crowning glory, the Sapphire Ball, a night celebrating stage and screen.
In the latest IER report released last month Cairns Amateurs Carnival scored a high to very high score for enhancing community pride and the city’s reputation as a worldclass visitor destination.
“Be it 1959 or 2023 it is the combination of city and country, racing and fashion, black tie and spring colour that come together for three days every spring to give Amateurs the star quality it deserves,” Mr Goodman said.
The Sapphire Jubilee is celebrating 65 years with ‘The Jewel of Racing Spring Festival’ program - comprising blue sapphire theming and Sapphire Ball, brand new website, digital campaign, and ticket sales launched and live.
In the coming months further details of the Carnival’s 2023 Sapphire Jubilee event and entertainment line-up will be announced. Stay tuned on Cairns Amateurs social platforms or www.cairnsamateurs.org.au
About the Cairns Amateurs Carnival
The Far North Queensland Amateur Turf Club Inc was established in 1959 by the late Sir Sydney Williams OBE and Les Gallagher to introduce a coastal version of the historical Oak Park races as a way of bringing city and country people together. Jockeys were, as the Club’s name suggests, amateur riders – most of whom came from inland stations. Professional riders were not present until many years later due to changes in race regulations.
Today, the mission of the club is to operate a sustainable and accessible annual racing carnival showcasing the social, cultural, and commercial attributes of Cairns and the tropical north.

Newly crowned Carnival Ambassador
No amateur when it comes to track winning looks
ideas while cataloguing the winning looks from Fashions on the Field competitions across Australia, New Zealand and beyond.
Since her first judging role at Cairns Amateurs Carnival in 2019 Ms Scodellaro has become a well-known face at Cannon Park and marquee events.
Cairns Amateurs Carnival event manager Victoria Jennings said the committee was thrilled to confirm Ms Scodellaro in the role of ambassador.
“Em is such an amazing and brilliant ambassador for our event – not just from a fashion judging perspective but across the entire carnival program. She exudes a happy and luminescent spirit in keeping with the social, fashionable, and fun filled vibe that Amateurs is known for and loved by all. We could not think of anyone more perfectly suited to the role of Carnival Ambassador,” Ms Jennings said.
According to Ms Jennings, the ambassador’s role is an honour as well as a responsibility, that along with promoting the event between now and September, includes being lead judge tasked with deciding the most stylish entrants in this year’s FOTF competition.
Ms Scodellaro said she was honoured to represent Cairns Amateurs in 2023.
“I absolutely love the Cairns Amateurs and particularly its history and traditions that continue to resonate with visitors and racegoers today. I am just so thrilled to be given this opportunity and become part of the Amateurs story during this very exciting and special, Sapphire Jubilee year,” Ms Scodellaro said.

Expertly marrying classic couture with contemporary, cutting-edge style, Australia’s multi-award winning, Fashions on the Field doyenne, Emma Scodellaro will wear the coveted ambassadorial crown to envoy the 2023 Sapphire Jubilee edition of Cairns Amateurs Carnival.
The epitome of style, grace and impeccable racewear looks, Ms Scodellaro is perhaps best known as the founder of, It’s All About the Sash – a social media platform sharing
Ms Scodellaro cites ‘It’s All About the Sash’ as her greatest achievement which she says is a platform promoting friendship, sharing ideas, and cataloguing the winning Fashions on the Field competitors. With a membership of more than 6.6k followers on Facebook and almost 7.5k on Instagram, It’s All About the Sash has long been racing fashion’s ‘go to’ for inspiration and information.
“Fashions on the Field have been my absolute passion for so long now and through my social platforms I aim to educate, promote, and contribute to the development of racing fashion events not only in Australia but worldwide,” she said.
Emma has judged extensively across Australia and for many virtual competitions, including overseas, and prides herself on her impartiality and depth of knowledge when it comes to quality fashion, styling, millinery and racewear.
MELBOURNE CUP
Cairns Amateurs welcomes back the People’s Cup
The Lexus Melbourne Cup trophy will add a golden touch to the Cairns Amateurs Sapphire Jubilee carnival in September with confirmation it will touch down in Cairns as part of its 21st annual tour spanning 7 countries.
Cairns Amateurs Carnival President David Goodman said he is looking forward to welcoming the People’s Cup to the Far North as part of this year’s tour.
“Cairns Amateurs have hosted the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour in the past and the iconic trophy has always proved a hit with racegoers. Its blend of history and golden allure is a beautiful addition to our Carnival’s list of attractions. This is a rare opportunity to hold and be photographed with a magical and iconic piece of Australia’s sporting success,” Mr Goodman said.
Cairns will also be part of the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour National Sweep which will see 24 rural and regional Cup Tour destinations across Australia allocated a barrier for the 2023 Lexus Melbourne Cup.
If Cairns draws the barrier of the Lexus Melbourne Cup winning horse the Cairns Amateurs Carnival fundraising partner, the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation, will receive a cash prize of $50,000.
From Thursday, September 7th to Saturday, September 9th 2023 the Cairns Amateurs Carnival marks 65 years with its four-day Sapphire Jubilee program of fun, fashion, and racing events that include the Fashion High Tea, the President’s Cocktail Party, the Sapphire Gala Ball, and two days of racing at Cannon Park.

Cairns & the Tropical North
The gateway to Queensland’s tropical north, Cairns is a laid-back city best enjoyed outdoors
The region of Cairns is home to the iconic Great Barrier Reef and Wet Tropics World Heritage Rainforest, but the city of Cairns itself is also a must-visit. You’ll find brilliant cafés, bustling markets and plenty of beaches nearby. Relax by a resort pool or end your days exploring this tropical oasis.
As one of Australia’s most remote and beautiful cities, Cairns is the international gateway into Tropical North Queensland, and the local Council proudly claims it is the “safest tropical city in the world”. Although Singapore might argue with that statement, you won’t find many people arguing that Cairns is a bad place.
Residents of Cairns (and visitors) are lucky enough to have two of the world’s greatest natural treasures on their doorstep in the Great Barrier Reef and the tropical rainforests - both of which are World Heritage listed. There are few places on Earth where two such treasures rest side by side.
Home of the Cairns Amateurs spend extra time vising the picturesque towns of Palm Cove and Port Douglas. So, after your trip to the Cairns Amateurs take time to exp-lore this wonderful part of the World.

Fun Facts about Cairns
• It is home to the world’s most dangerous bird
The amazing, and terrifying, the cassowary is native to the north-eastern parts of Australia. Though not as tall as the emu, cassowaries are far stronger and more dangerous. The large black birds are easily identifiable due to their bright blue heads and dinosaur-like legs and feet.
Though omnivores, cassowaries generally survive by eating tropical fruits found in their natural environments. However, just because they don’t want to eat humans doesn’t mean they won’t harm you. They are incredibly wary of humans and have been known to attack with incredible force. If you are lucky enough to come across one in person, stay very quiet and do not disturb them, for everyone’s safety!
• Cairns homes the highest mountain in Queensland
Adding to its already long list of attractions, Cairns is also home to the highest peak in Queensland. Mount Bartle Frere measures a whopping 1,611m high and sits just south of Cairns.
There are plenty of lovely hikes for you to enjoy up and around the mountain. The main trail will take you from Josephine Falls all the way to the Atherton Tablelands.
If you want to reach the summit you will need to be an experienced hiker. The mountain is extremely demanding, and hikers should not underestimate how difficult the terrain can be.
• Cairns has the largest moth in Australia!
Moth haters beware, the mammoth Hercules Moth is the largest moth species in the world, with a wingspan of over 27 centimetres. The largest one ever found was 36 centimetres wide! The incredible moth is found only in this part of Australia and has more astonishing features than just its size.

BIRDSVILLE RACES
Tickets to the 2023 Birdsville Races are now on-sale at www.birdsvilleraces.com as organisers gear up to run the most remote horse race in the world on the first weekend in September.
Staged in the spectacular Simpson Desert of Outback Queensland, the Birdsville Races have built a reputation as a truly bucket list adventure - with a rich history spanning 141 years.
“The remote setting and history of the Birdsville Races make it one of the most unique horse racing experiences in the world. Watching thoroughbred horses thunder down our dusty desert track is a true bucket list experience,” said Gary Brook, Vice President, Birdsville Race Club.
Ranked in the top 10 of Australia’s iconic horse racing tracks, the Birdsville race track is the only thoroughbred dirt race track to be included amongst the green turf of other renowned racing destinations such as Flemington, Rosehill and Royal Randwick.*
“The Birdsville Races is unlike any other race meet in Australia. We still stage some of the traditional elements of a big race meet such as fashions on the field and our version of the Birdcage with a gorgeous VIP trackside marquee – however we also offer the most amazing setting in the Simpson Desert and the whackiest fashions on the field dress up outfits on the first day of racing. And our after parties are legendary – with the town of Birdsville swelling from its usual 150-ish population to around 6,000 people enjoying a mix of their own campfire fun, a cold beer at the iconic Birdsville Hotel or Fred Brophy’s renowned box-
ing tent in the heart of town,” said Ginnie Hope-Johnstone, Event Manager, Birdsville Race Club.
The journey to the Birdsville Races through Outback Queensland is an integral part of the bucket list experience for grey nomads, intrepid families and young adventurers alike.
“Membership of the Birdsville Races Roadies is also available for free for all ticket holders. We’ve experienced great growth in this initiative in recent years and in 2022 we had thousands of racegoers from around Australia take part, making memories and friendships to last a lifetime on their pilgrimage to the races,” said Ginnie Hope-Johnstone.
2023 will see even more rewards, benefits and ways to connect with other travellers included as part of the Birdsville Races Roadie’s membership as well as travel routes designed to showcase the best of Outback Queensland – from artesian hot springs to Australia’s biggest dinosaur, bilby’s, Opal fossicking and more.
The recent rains throughout Outback Queensland will make for spectacular scenery for Roadies in 2023 whichever direction they’re travelling from. Rivers and creeks along the routes will be running, and there will be an abundance of wildlife and native grasses.
“The red earth of Outback Queensland has large swathes of greenery – it’s a rare occurrence to see the desert looking so lush. The Channel Country looks absolutely spectacular from the air with scenic flights available from Birdsville,” added Gary Brook.
The adventure continues when Roadies arrive in Birdsville, with outback entertainment at the iconic Birdsville Hotel, an outdoor cinema under the Milky Way, Fred Brophy’s famous travelling boxing troupe, camel pies at the Birdsville Bakery, sunset drinks at Big Red, paddle boarding on the Billabong and a round of golf on the Birdsville Dunes Golf Course where the red sand bunkers are nearly as challenging as the ball stealing crows.
Everyone purchasing Birdsville Races tickets before July 15th will automatically be mailed Roadies rally-style car sticker packs before July 30th. Alternately, for those hitting the road beforehand – or purchasing tickets after July 15thcar stickers can be collected in Birdsville.
The Birdsville Races is proudly supported by the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland and features on the It’s Live! in Queensland events calendar. The Birdsville Races generate millions of dollars in tourism spending for Outback Queensland, as well as being a much-needed social event for remote property holders and communities. The event also supports the important outback medical work of the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
The Birdsville Races is a full TAB meet with the combined prize money for the 13-race carnival topping more than $285,000 as well as bonuses up for grabs across the two days of racing. The TAB Birdsville Cup prize money is $42,000.
Volunteering opportunities also exist at the 2023 Birdsville Races – giving an insiders perspective on the event.
Volunteers receive complimentary general admission entry tickets and exclusive Birdsville Race Club merchandise. Interest in volunteering can be made during the ticket purchase process or via the website. Those who pre purchase their tickets and would still like to volunteer will be gifted a merchandise voucher to the value of Friday and Saturday GA entry instead.

Racing Victoria (RV) has announced that the core safety standards for horses competing in the Spring Racing Carnival will remain in place in 2023 with a focus on further enhancing administrative processes for their connections.
Introduced in 2021, the world leading safety standards are part of Victorian racing’s ongoing commitment to minimising the risk of injuries, particularly among international horses travelling to compete in Victoria and for all horses contesting the Melbourne Cup.
These important safety standards are reviewed regularly and in determining this year’s veterinary protocols, RV conducted a review of their application in the 2022 Spring Racing Carnival – the second successive without a serious incident.
RV’s working group, which includes integrity, veterinary, equine welfare and racing experts, also considered feedback from a broad range of stakeholders including Australian and international private veterinarians, regulatory veterinarians, trainers, jockeys, owners, primary service providers, and Victoria’s racing clubs.
Upon recommendation of the working group, the RV Board endorsed updates to the following veterinary protocols for international horses seeking to travel via the
Werribee International Horse Centre (WIHC) and compete in Victoria in 2023 and beyond:
a) Radiographs (X-Rays) will no longer be mandatory but may be directed to be undertaken at the discretion of RV. X-Rays are now primarily suggested as a screening tool for connections before progressing to advanced diagnostic imaging. A pre-travel CT or MRI scan remains mandatory for each international horse; and
b) The pre-travel inspection and imaging window will now open earlier on August 1st for all international horses and close one week prior to a horse entering pre-export quarantine (dates to be determined based on horse shipments). This replaces the window of six weeks to one week prior to a horse entering pre-export quarantine.
In addition to the endorsed changes to the 2023 veterinary protocols, the RV Board, on advice from the working group, also determined:
A requirement for improved operational communication methods and processes to enhance the experience of connections completing the veterinary protocols. This will include the appointment of a case manager for international contenders;
A renewed focus on attracting Japanese horses to Melbourne for future editions of the Spring Racing Carnival, by improving the understanding of the veterinary protocols by Japanese trainers and owners; and
All international horses, including those travelling on a oneway ticket, will remain in WIHC until Champions Stakes Day on November 11th 2023 or until after their last Spring Racing Carnival start if earlier.
To further assist in providing a more efficient process for connections, the Victoria Racing Club has advised RV that nominations for the 2023 Melbourne Cup, which falls on the later date of November 7th, will close in early September for all horses. The nomination dates for the Cox Plate and Caulfield Cup are expected to remain in early August when finalised.
RV will continue to work with clubs, stakeholders, and local and international connections, on the implementation of the veterinary protocols for the 2023 Spring Racing Carnival.
Quotes attributable to RV Executive General Manager, Integrity Services - Jamie Stier:
“Our world-leading veterinary protocols aim to minimise the risk of injuries to horses. They have made a notable difference across the past two Spring Racing Carnivals which were conducted without serious injuries.
“Through our annual review of the Spring Racing Carnival and ongoing consultation with relevant stakeholders, we continue to make minor adjustments to the veterinary protocols to enhance their practical application, whilst maintaining our high safety standards.
“The core veterinary protocols will remain unchanged in 2023 for international horses travelling to compete in Victoria and for all horses contesting the Melbourne Cup. “What will change in 2023 is our communication with connections throughout the process. We are committed to enhancing that and ensuring we deliver timely and informative updates where possible.
“This year marks the 30th anniversary of international participation in Victoria’s Spring Racing Carnival and our racing and veterinary teams will be working closely together to welcome international competitors back to Melbourne.”Myer Fashions on the Field Ambassador Tim Kano. Victoria Racing Update
by Brian KrugerFan engagement a focus of 2023-24 Victorian race dates
Racing Victoria (RV), in consultation with Clubs and key industry stakeholders, has released the race dates for the 2023-24 racing season with a focus on evolving the fixture to become more fan friendly.
The new racing season, which begins on August 1st 2023, will see Victoria host 555 race meet- ings – one more than scheduled in 2022-23 due to the fall of the calendar and consistent with Victoria’s meeting average across the past decade.
The 2023-24 season will feature 113 metropolitan, 391 country TAB, 18 country non-TAB, and 33 picnic race meetings across 351 days with 14 race-free days allocated including the return of Christmas Eve.

We are a boutique law firm providing you with the best legal advice
We pride ourselves on our ability to provide clear, understandable and solid legal advice to your legal issues in a caring and professional manner
A total of 56 meetings have been scheduled at night with the addition of three meetings to maximise
fan engagement. This is one fewer than the peak of 57-night meetings in 2016-17 and remains consistent at 10% of the fixture.
Significant changes to next season’s dates were announced in February 2023 as part of the annual Spring Racing Carnival review. These are summarised as follows:
Caulfield will host an exciting new Group 1 raceday on Saturday, November 18 2023 – the week after TAB Champions Stakes Day at Flemington. The new meeting will be headlined by the Group 1 Schweppes Thousand Guineas, the Group 1 Neds Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, and a rich Country Cups Final; and to accommodate the new raceday, the Ladbrokes Cranbourne Cup meeting moves back one week to Saturday, November 25th 2023, and the Sportsbet Ballarat Cup meeting back two weeks to Saturday, December 9th 2023.
Following further consultation since February, RV has finalised the 2023-24 race dates with the following additional changes of note:
The Sportsbet Pakenham Cup will move from a Saturday timeslot to a Thursday night in 2024 to further build upon the tremendous growth and success of Thursday night racing at Sports-bet-Pakenham. The relocated Cup strengthens the Festival of Racing’s staying program and will feature alongside the prized Future Stars Final on Thursday night, February 29th;
Geelong Racing Club (GRC) has been allocated a standalone metropolitan Saturday meeting on January 6th 2024 to entertain holiday-makers on the Bellarine Peninsula during the busy summer period.
An announcement on the race program will be made at a later date;
As part of the yearly rotation, the Good Friday meeting (March 29th 2024), which is headlined by The Country Discovery, will be run at bet365 Yarra Valley and for the first time a night meeting will be run on Good Friday with Cranbourne Turf Club (CTC) set to host;
To capitalise on the AFL bye weekend, Sportsbet-Pakenham will, for the first time, host its Synthetic Finals meeting at night on Friday, September 1st ahead of the Group 1 Memsie Stakes meeting at Caulfield the following day; and
The Victoria Racing Club’s (VRC) Rapid Racing meeting at Flemington will shift from a Friday in late January to Wednesday, 20 December where it will provide an opportunity for new fan engagement in the lead-up to Christmas.
A RECORD $300K RAISED
FOR RULE PROSTATE CANCER AT MRC FOUNDATION GALA
On Thursday 11 May, the eighth MRC Foundation Gala raised a record $300,000 for RULE Prostate Cancer in an effort to help Aussie Legends in their fight against prostate cancer.
Held at Crown Palladium for the first time, the MRC Foundation Gala united the racing industry with more than 600 esteemed guests, including corporate partners and industry participants, rally together and raise donations to assist RULE Prostate Cancer in their protection of Aussie Legends through education, awareness and encouragement of early testing.
The MRC Foundation’s most significant fundraiser continues to go from strength to strength, with the record amount raised generated through a combination of pledges, live auctions, silent auctions, private donations, raffles and the purchase of tables at the Gala.
Gala, and the financial support extended to RULE Prostate Cancer as a result.
“We are endlessly proud of the MRC Foundation Gala and the opportunity it presents for our wonderful partners, organisations and friends to extend their generosity and support of the MRC Foundation and RULE Prostate Cancer. Thank you to those who have contributed to the vital work RULE does, resulting in an astonishing amount of donations and funds raised,” said Dawson.
“We especially extend our sincere gratitude to the Blake family who were kind enough to share their and Steve’s story, sharing real life insight on the effects of prostate cancer. Hearing firsthand the incredible support RULE provides patients and their families, as well as the education and awareness they are raising amongst Australian men and their loved ones, was a privilege. We are so pleased to play a part in helping Aussie Legends.”
Hosted by Channel 7’s Jason Richardson and ABC’s Catherine Murphy, guests gained insight into the works and mission of RULE Prostate Cancer from Chairman Bill Guest AM and were moved by the poignant words of the Blake family, who lost beloved husband and father, Steve Blake in September 2022 to prostate cancer.
The crowd was treated to a uniquely spectacular performance by phenom duo SaxOnCello, comprised of well-known Melbourne saxophonist, Ashley James, and wildly gifted cellist Lily Thornton. Special guests who attended and supported the event included Racing Minister, Hon. Anthony Carbines MP,and RULE Ambassador, Ted Whitten Jr.
The evening’s successful live auction ushered in a wave of generosity, conducted by Nick Myer from Elders, whose command roused the crowd’s giving spirit, contributing to the night’s record setting efforts, with over $50,000 in pledges made prior to the start of the live auction, led by Racing Victoria with $15,000.

Racing Victoria launches retirement farm program to support retired racehorses
To ensure that every thoroughbred racehorse in Victoria has an appropriate retirement option, Racing Victoria (RV) has launched a new program to formally acknowledge retirement farms across the state, to assist owners and trainers in locating a suitable home for racehorses that may not be suited to an active post-racing career.
In the same way that RV operates a network of Acknowledged Retrainers who prepare retired thoroughbreds for their new careers away from the racetrack, Acknowledged Retirement Farm providers will receive official acknowledgement from RV provided they meet the criteria, which has been developed to promote good health and happiness for thoroughbred racehorses during their retirement.
The initiative is primarily designed to provide an option for owners who seek long-term agistment for their retired thoroughbred. A provider’s farm must meet a minimum standard for their property and horse management to qualify for the program.
The criteria includes an annual property inspection by RV’s Equine Welfare team, and for providers to claim all thoroughbreds under their care on the Off The Track Community.
In return, providers will receive several benefits including promotion of their businesses via the Off The Track Community and Off The Track’s digital channels, as well as within RV’s monthly Inside Racing magazine; access to educational opportunities; tickets to social events; and exclusive RV Acknowledged Retirement Farm merchandise.
“We are delighted to launch the Acknowledged Retirement Farm program, RV’s newest post-racing initiative which reinforces our ongoing commitment to equine welfare,” said RV’s General Manager – Equine Welfare, Melissa Ware.
“All thoroughbreds deserve a happy home once they have retired from racing, and by ensuring Acknowledged Retirement Farm providers meet the minimum welfare standards, owners can send their racehorses to these properties safe in the knowledge that they will be well cared for.
“We would encourage anyone with an agistment property in Victoria to contact RV’s Equine Welfare team and start the application process to become an Acknowledged Retirement Farm.
“Not only will they assist in our efforts to find a suitable home for retired racehorses, but there are also many benefits to providers when they join the program.”
For further information on the program, please visit the Off The Track Community or contact RV’s equine welfare team at: equinewelfare@racingvictoria.net.au
Frankie Dettori’s Flemington fare
World renowned jockey Frankie Dettori has announced he will ride at this year’s Melbourne Cup Carnival, giving fans their chance to farewell him at Flemington before his retirement.
On the 30th anniversary of his first Melbourne Cup appearance, Dettori will compete at Flemington on Lexus Melbourne Cup Day, Kennedy Oaks Day and TAB Champions Stakes Day.
Dettori is one of the world’s most accomplished jockeys, riding more than 250 Group 1 winners across the globe including nine Ascot Gold Cups and five Prix de l’Arc de Triomphes.
With a career spanning more than thirty-five years, the champion jockey is looking to make one last attempt to tick off his bucket list race – winning the Lexus Melbourne Cup.
“I have achieved all there is to achieve in horse racing and have had a fantastic career, but the Lexus Melbourne Cup has always been one race that I would love to win,” Dettori said.
“I am looking forward to returning to Melbourne to ride at the carnival for one final time and hopefully I can finish my career with a Melbourne Cup win.”
Victoria Racing Club (VRC) Chief Executive Officer Steve Rosich said the club was ecstatic to be welcoming Frankie to Flemington for the 2023 Melbourne Cup Carnival.
“Frankie Dettori is one of the best jockeys and personalities the sport has ever seen and the VRC look forward to giving
him a fitting farewell at Flemington at the Melbourne Cup Carnival,” Mr Rosich said.
“The Lexus Melbourne Cup is a race that jockeys across Australia and the world want to win, and this year will be no different. Preparations for this year’s Melbourne Cup Carnival are well underway and racegoers can look forward to another week of world-class racing, hospitality and entertainment.”
Dettori had his first ride in the Melbourne Cup in 1993 aboard Drum Taps, the same year that international raider Vintage Crop made history becoming the first international horse to win the Cup. He has since had 17 attempts to try and win the feature and has come agonizingly close on three occasions – Central Park (2nd in 1999), Max Dynamite (2nd in 2015) and Master of Reality (2nd in 2019 but relegated to 4th).
The 2023 Melbourne Cup Carnival will carry more than $30 million in prizemoney across four days of sensational racing. It begins on Saturday, November 4th with Penfolds Victoria Derby Day, followed by Lexus Melbourne Cup Day on Tuesday, November 7th, Kennedy Oaks Day on Thursday, November 9th, and concludes with TAB Champions Stakes Day on Saturday, November 11th. Anna Roper – ready to make her riding return from injury
ANNA ROPER ON THE COMEBACK TRAIL
“It’s been such a frustrating period,” she said. “I can’t wait to get back to race riding and I’m keener than ever.
“I think once you’ve been riding and know how successful and rewarding it can be, it’s very difficult to be away from it.”
Roper had expected to miss around three months when she hurt her right knee in the fall at Muswellbrook on November 25.
Jockey Anna Roper had been on the crest of a wave when she was sidelined last year with a serious knee injury, having led the Apprentices’ Premiership with 41 winners and was in the top five in the State’s jockey ranks.
Roper was in high demand across the Country and Provincial circuits and was on the verge of riding in the city.
Now, almost seven months after her fall, Roper is on the comeback trail.
“My immediate reaction when I fell was to tell the ambulance officers not to give me any pain killers so I could fulfil my rides for the afternoon,” she said.
“When I tried to stand, I realised how bad my knee was and was asking for the pain killers.
“Initially the specialist thought the knee would heal itself without surgery but when it hadn’t improved after three months, he had to operate to repair the medial cruciate ligament.
IT’S BEEN A LONG ROAD BACK TO RACE RIDING FOR WYONG APPRENTICE ANNA ROPER WHO WAS INJURED IN A FALL AT MUSWELLBROOK IN LATE NOVEMBER
“There was a three to four-month recovery after that, with the first month non-weight bearing. “I had a fair bit of wastage on my leg, so I’ve had plenty of physio and been going to the gym every day to build it back up. “I was very conscious of my weight, it was my main concern, but I only put on two kilos so I was pretty happy with that.”
Anna returned to the track a couple of days a week in June and expects to return to race riding this month. “It’s all a part of the ups and downs of racing, but I can’t wait to get back and hopefully get the support of the trainers.”
MADDIE DERRICK COMEBACK
Another Wyong-based apprentice Maddi Derrick continues her comeback, booting home five winners since her return to the saddle in late February.
Derrick was injured in a fall in May 2022 and spent eight months recovering. She had ridden 26 winners for the season prior to the fall, many of those for her master Kristen Buchanan. It’s great to see the talented young rider back in the saddle and riding winners.
Maddi Derrick is now back riding after being sidelined for eight months
East Hotel Canberra
There are many beautiful times of the year to visit Canberra, but the warm colour display in winter is hard to beat! Long walks around Lake Burley Griffin, mountain bike rides in Mount Stromlo and getting lost in local makers and growers markets followed by local gin, beer, wine tasting… what more do you need?
Conveniently located in the heart of Canberra, East Hotel is a family affair with Italian roots. The 140-room boutique property stretches the mould of a “design hotel” with an emphasis on moody and sumptuous interiors alongside warm and authentic service.
Since opening their doors in 2012, EAST has grown and become a destination for both visitors to Canberra and local Canberrans.
From the moment I stepped into this hotel, I was surrounded by beauty, with the artwork and images displayed on the screens. Visitors walk into the lobby and are instantly engaged, curious and surprised.
The self-contained rooms were extremely comfortable and had everything you would need for a longer stay. Spacious rooms with beautiful décor and artwork and a fully equipped kitchen with coffee machine.
If you don’t want to leave the hotel, EAST have the best of the best right here. Muse has a fantastic breakfast menu, and you can dine whilst looking at the array of many books on sale. Joe’s Bar for aperitivo and Agostinis for daily home-made fresh pasta and pizza!
EAST is what happens when a passionate Italian family opens their arms and welcome guests into their hotel, just as they would at home.
Start planning your stay with EAST, and you will not be disappointed. This hotel will always be my go-to when I visit Canberra.

Shines At Hyatt Regency Brisbane!
One could say that there are many things that make Hyatt Regency Brisbane special but one is most definitely their appointment last year of charismatic media personality Damien Anthony Avery-Rossi (aka Mr Hollywood in Oz) as their Ambassador.
Not only is the Brisbane CBD property (formerly the legendary Lennons Hotel), the only hotel in Brisbane to boast an Ambassador but to secure, Damien the ’Social King of Queensland’, in the inaugural role was quite a coup.
In Damien’s first year as Ambassador, he has already hosted some very memorable events including the glamorous Hamptons-themed Glamourossi Fashion Long Lunch and a poolside Sex and The City Trivia Soirée. When we caught up with Damien, he spoke about how much he is enjoying his ambassador role, his affinity for the hotel (he even got married there last year!) and his surprising history with the property.
“I was thrilled and honoured to have been appointed Ambassador for Hyatt Regency Brisbane last year. I love this property and have a long history with this site, going back 30 years when it was the iconic Lennons Hotel.
I worked at Lennons in the early 1990’s as the hotel’s Duty Manager, my first full-time job in Brisbane after relocating from Los Angeles. I have such an affinity for and history with this fantastic property that it was the chosen venue for our wedding in July, which was truly the happiest day of my life.
The alfresco Hibiscus Room and glamorous Lennons Restaurant & Bar were the perfect venues for our wedding ceremony and dinner reception, and we couldn’t be happier with how it all went. I have so many great memories and have had so many wonderful times at this property over the last three decades and I look forward to continuing to be involved with the team to provide even more wonderful experiences here for Brisbane locals and visiting guests who I hope will join me to enjoy everything this terrific hotel has to offer.”

FASHIONS FROM AFAR BACK AGAIN!
Racing Queensland (RQ) launched “Fashions from Afar” for country racegoers off the track for the third consecutive year. RQ’s Fashion from afar competition celebrated the age-old tradition of trackside style and celebrate modern millinery trends and head-to-toe style dressing and grooming.
Fashions from Afar ran in conjunction with Battle of the Bush qualifiers around Queensland, with winners offered the opportunity to compete in the final, held in Brisbane on Tattersall’s Tiara Day, Saturday, June 24, 2023. The competition was inclusive of male and female categories.

The 119th Oak Park Races Friday Country Casual Fashions on the Field were held in the beautiful garden area under the canopy of the lovely Oak trees. Such an inviting setting ensured that large crowds gathered to view all the entrants in each category. Following the children’s FOTF, held on the race track, the categories included Male and Female entrants aged 18 and over, and on the Saturday, a Classic Race wear event featured Millinery, Contemporary and Couples prizes.
As Oak Park is so remote, months of planning, organisation and attention to detail were needed to ensure the day went smoothly. Our floral arrangements were delivered by Ornella the grocery lady who regularly delivers orders to the remote properties in the area, and the floral bouquets presented to the winners are brought out by members during the week, so they are fresh for Friday and Saturday. This is a 4-hour drive! We are very grateful for their generosity.
by Jo MurphyOur judges included past Melbourne Cup fashions winner Jordie Beard, a regular visitor to the race meet, and first-time attender Jess Orford, who recently organised Fashions for the esteemed Cairns Amateurs in Far North Queensland who this year is celebrating its Sapphire Jubilee, 65 years of racing, fashion, and memories!
Oak Park Race Club has a fantastic support group of friends who make and set up the stage area, hang potted plants, water the floral arrangements, and have the garden area looking green, mowed, and pristine for the Fashions event. Along with our very generous sponsors and this wonderful group of supporters, the Fashions on the Field would not be such a successful event in this glorious bush setting beside the Copperfield River in the Etheridge Shire of North Queensland.

It’s 2023, so you’d think that career progression wouldn’t still be impacted by your gender. Yet here we are. The truth is, work is a game originally developed by men, for men. Though the players have changed, the rules to succeed have not. The books are available through Amazon Kindle ebooks. I can email extracts from Out of Cargill Girl as a PDF document free to see if it appeals. The most pleasing comments I’ve had over the years have been: “Dad has never read a book in his life but he loved your books”; “Apart from the Cup, I’m not into horse racing, but I loved the story.”
The books follow the lives and fortunes ofcharacters (including horses) who appear in all four books through several generations. These characters are typical ofthose associated with the racing industry, including trainers, breeders, owners, jockeys, strappers, stable hands, racingadministrators, race callers, journalists, veterinarians, punters and even politicians. The Central Coast and country tracks in NSW provides the setting for much of the books.

Tommy Woodcock
Phar Lap’s Strapper and Trainer Talks With Ern Browne November 1982
Passionate and enthusiastic are indeed understatements when describing Wg .Cdr. Ern Browne MBE Rtd.’s * reverence and love for the mighty and legendary Phar Lap – “Big Red” as he was affectionately known - and his famous strapper and trainer, Tommy Woodcock.
In 1982, this passion led Ern to meet Tommy at his home and stables in Mentone, Victoria, and they formed a strong bond of friendship based on their mutual love of Phar Lap. They came together so that Ern could record their conversations over the course of three days, while Tommy signed a thousand Limited Edition prints from an original oil painting by Australian artist Robert Wettenhall commissioned by Ern of Phar Lap winning the 1930 Melbourne Cup.
These conversations of historical significance are a fascinating, informative and educational insight into this lightning-fast horse, whose grace, stamina and charisma mesmerised and lifted our nation’s hearts, minds and spirit during the Great Depression. They also give us an insight into the man, Tommy Woodcock – his kindness, generosity, sense of humour and his great love for Phar Lap.
The conversations have never before been released to the public. The tragic and untimely death in 1986 of Ern’s beloved wife Eunice, his devoted partner in this venture, caused Ern to not progress with it. Ern himself passed away in 2012. Ern and Eunice’s daughter, Robyn BrowneMcIntyre, has now put rare film of Phar Lap winning his last race at Agua Caliente winning the 1930 Melbourne
Cup, his training sessions with Tommy Woodcock and rare interviews with his Owner/Trainer Harry Telford and Jockey Jim Pike and Tommy’s conversations to create a DVD: “Tommy Woodcock – Phar lap’s Strapper and Trainer -Talks With Ern Browne November 1982”. Robyn, together with Ern and Eunice’s son, Mark E. Browne, want to honour their parents’ legacy and wish to share this remarkable insight into the mighty Phar-Lap and his devoted strapper and trainer, Tommy Woodcock, with the Australian public in accordance with Ern’s vision.
Back to the beginning. During this time, Ern operating as Phar Lap Promotions, acquired trademarks and patents for a range of merchandise promoting Phar Lap, including T-shirts, key ring cases and a Port wine called “Phar Lap Big Tawny”. In 1983, the movie “Phar Lap –Hero To A Nation” was released, promoted by Michael Edgley International. At the same time Michael Edgley International released a “Phar Lap” promotional port wine. Rightly asserting that Edgley’s port was breaching his patent, Ern prosecuted a court case against Michael Edgley International. The outcome was not in Ern’s favour. Though displeased, Ern was happy that he had stood up for his principles, the “little man” and that like Phar Lap, he had done his best and given it all he had.
During Ern’s and Tommy’s conversations, Tommy proved to have a big heart too. He talks about the Heart Specialist and vet, Dr. Stuart Mackay, who was mesmerised by Phar Lap’s heart. Dr. Mackay had formulated a recipe for a “Soothing Liniment” to treat Phar Lap’s cracked hooves and sent the formula to Tommy. Tommy had it made up and tells us how healing it was for Phar Lap’s hooves. We hear Tommy generously undertake to send this original recipe to Ern, which he did in 1983,. Amongst other Phar Lap memorabilia, we also hear Tommy kindly undertake to give Ern the shoes Phar Lap wore when he won his last race, the Agua Caliente Handicap, in 1932.
In Ern’s own words:
“That concludes my recordings of Tommy and I, Ern Browne, talking during three memorable days spent with Tommy in his home at Mentone and his stables nearby, on the 8th, 9th and 10th of November 1982. I hope you enjoy our talks”.
