EQUUS NEXUS

Rehoming Project I recently had an opportunity to catch up with Mike Lawrence and Julie Saunders at Equus Nexus while they were starting a young horse of mine. At their purpose build facilities at Modewarre, Victoria Mike and Julie have several beautiful retired thoroughbred racehorses in various stages of training and re-homing. This is a highly skilled process so I was keen to get an insight from someone who has been doing this successfully for a lifetime.

What is your experience riding and training ex- racehorses?’

Describe some of the horses you have trained?

“I grew up on my parent’s cattle property in Yarra Glen, next to a Racehorse trainer. I started riding for him and re-homed retiring horses when I was 12yo. ..50 years ago. It doesn’t sound long if you say it fast…’

“from 15hh polo, or riding club types, to 17hh professional eventing or show jumping mounts…there is a thoroughbred horse for everyone. Some have come out of racing young, others with 70 plus starts under their girth…every horse is unique in some way. Recognising this is the key to the re-training re-homing process’

Why do you love thoroughbreds? “They are simply the ultimate athlete !…that willingness to go forward, and their adaptability make then a favoured breed for any serious horse trainer...”

2

SPIRIT OF RACING ISSUE #1

Why do you think ex-racehorses excel at equestrian sports? “from the founding genetic mix of Arab and bigger English breeds, then 400 year of selection of those horses best adapted to racing…this has created the most trainable athlete in history...” APRIL 2020

What are the advantages of riding and competing on ex-racehorses? “in the Olympic sport of eventing, for example, Australians and New Zealanders have been very successful. I think we can attribute this, in part, to our ready access to thoroughbred horses” How long can ex-racehorses remain useful after the proper training? “There are so many stories of horses competing in various equestrian codes into their 20’s and going on to be companion paddock horses…” What do you do to help ex-racehorses into their new careers as equestrian horses? “…it starts with training the horse to “self-carry” or “cruise control” on a light rein contact. Simultaneously we train the equestrian riders use of the rider’s legs…” What training principles do you find essential? ‘Always supporting the use of hands, legs and seat with positive re-enforcement…. Rewards...” Why is it advantageous for racehorse owners to plan their horse’s long-term careers? “in the perfect world we would start this training before racing… when we’ve done this, we seem to also have a better racehorse outcome…this needs further evidence-based research but, in my experience, this has been the case…” What are the best possible outcomes for a retrained racehorse? “My focus is in the equestrian codes I have trained and competed in personally,….including dressage, show jumping, eventing, stock work and polo…but I see thoroughbreds successful in every discipline….”

trying to breed a horse more athletic than the thoroughbred racehorse….and then end up breeding back to thoroughbreds to create the performance horse superstars…” I understand Equus Nexus currently provide a free online course to thoroughbred racehorse owners? Yes, it seemed to me that many racehorse owners had little information and confidence regarding re-homing of their horses, so we created a free course to overview our experience in this work. The feedback has been extremely encouraging…. and this only further improves the outcome for horses. Mike Lawrence, Julie Saunders, and the Equus Nexus team care and are committed to promoting ethical and evidenced-based training and coaching services worldwide. We further facilitate finding your perfect equine partner and understand the care and attention to detail required to successfully make this happen. Mike can be contacted on 0428 446 717 Email: mike@equusnexus,com

How do you find new homes and or equestrian riders for these exracehorses?

MIGHT AND POWER 12 April 2020

Statement on Might and Power from Living Legends It is with the deepest sadness that we advise that one of the all-time greats of Australian racing, Might And Power, has passed away at the age of 26. He was diagnosed with colic and rushed to Werribee Equine Centre for emergency surgery, but was unable to be saved. CEO & Veterinary Director, Dr Andrew Clarke, said he and the team were completely heartbroken to lose this very special oncein-a-lifetime horse. “I am incredibly sad to have to let you know that Might and Power was euthanised in the early hours of this morning,” Dr Clarke said. “Our hearts are with owner Nick Moraitis and Bob’s many fans, and also to our wonderful staff who cared for him every day. Living Legends will never be the same without our treasured Might And Power.”

“A special thank you to Werribee Equine Centre for their efforts to save his life,” he said. Might And Power retired in 1999 as a rare winner of the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate treble, and was one of the longest standing and most popular residents at Living Legends. Might and Power (foaled 1993) was New Zealand bred, but Australian owned and trained and named Australian Horse of the Year in 1998 and 1999. Might and Power was rated the world’s best stayer when in 1997 as a four-year-old he won the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup double. A free striding, front running style of racing made Might and Power an exciting racehorse and endeared him to racing fans

across the nation. Might and Power broke course records in winning the Caulfield Cup, the Doomben Cup, and the Cox Plate, and won a number of races by big margins. Might and Power demoralised and demolished his opponents. Said Les Carlyon: “The horse is a champion in the old fashioned sense of the word, a freak. He does things others can’t do”. Might and Power had the speed to open up an early lead in a race, and the stamina to maintain it in the middle and closing stages. In the 1997 Caulfield Cup, jockey Jim Cassidy took him to the front at the outset, made the pace for the whole race, and finished seven and a half lengths in front of the second horse, in a record time of 2 min. 26.2 sec. The rest of the field was headed by the 1995 winner Doriemus. Lee Freedman called it “The most amazing race I have ever seen”. Bobby with kids

Despite a 3.5 kg penalty in the 1997 Melbourne Cup, Cassidy employed the same tactics, and brought Might and Power home a winner by a short half head from Doriemus. At the end of 1997, Might and Power was named World Champion Stayer. In the autumn of 1998, Might and Power again exerted his dominance with a crushing 10 ½ length victory in the AJC Queen Elizabeth Stakes. He broke the course record in winning the Doomben Cup. In the spring of 1998 he destroyed a crack field in Australia’s weight-for-age championship, the W.S. Cox Plate, taking a full two seconds off the course record set the previous year by Saintly. He became only the second horse, after Rising Fast in 1954, to win both Cups and the Cox Plate, and the first reigning Melbourne Cup winner since Phar Lap in 1931 to win the Cox Plate.

Fiona McIntyre is the 26th winner of the Victorian Wakeful Club award. PHOTOS: FIONA HAMILTON RACING PHOTOS

VICTORIAN WAKEFUL CLUB AWARDS Fiona McIntyre is the Lady of Racing Fiona McIntyre has been recognised for her work in retraining and rehoming former racehorses by being crowned the 2020 Lady of Racing.

Fiona is the 26th winner of the coveted award, which is run by the Victorian Wakeful Club in partnership with Racing Victoria (RV) and aims to celebrate women who have made an outstanding contribution to thoroughbred racing and breeding. Her win was announced at a luncheon at The Glasshouse in Richmond on Friday, March 6, attended by hundreds to celebrate International Women’s Day (two days later). The Geelong retrainer has several former stars of the turf in her care, but it was her work with two former champions that sets her apart—she looks after legendary trainer Bart Cummings’ pair Precedence and Sirmione.

Reg Fleming, who worked with Precedence and Sirmione when Bart’s right-hand man in Melbourne, is now stable foreman in Victoria for Bart’s grandson, Godolphin’s head trainer James Cummings. Reg said: “Retired racehorses need a good home, and with Fiona they have that in spades.” RV chief executive Giles Thompson said the award recognised Fiona’s dedication—over more than 25 years—to ensuring retired racehorses led happy and healthy lives off the track. “We are very fortunate to have Fiona as one of the RV acknowledged retrainers who support our Off The Track program, which aims to facilitate the placement of retired racehorses in secondary careers and drive demand for thoroughbreds as performance and pleasure horses,” he said. Mr Thompson acknowledged the strength of this year’s award candidates, saying: “There were four exceptional finalists this year from all facets of the industry, making it a very difficult selection process.” The other finalists were Jenny Moodie (former Wakeful Club president), Lisa Coffey (Racing Hearts program founder) and Sally Wynne (jockey, trainer and clerk of the course). Winners of other awards announced at the luncheon were: •

The Marie McCullough Apprentice Jockey Training Program Scholarship: Carleen Hefel.

Precedence is now forging an equestrian career and has competed in the past two elite Garryowen Equestrienne Turnout events.

Victorian Premiership Apprentice Jockey Award: Jess Eaton.

“He raced at the highest level and now he’s competing as a show horse at the highest level,” Fiona said. “He’s truly an amazing horse and we’ve just created this really strong bond.”

Victorian Premiership Trainer Award: Natalie Young.

Spirit of Racing Award: Doris Thurgood.

The grand stayer Precedence (now 14) ran in four Melbourne Cups and won two Moonee Valley Cups in his 69-race career; Sirmione (now 16) won two Group 1 races over 2000 metres at Flemington, the Mackinnon Stakes and the Australian Cup.

Fiona said she loved “taking a diamond in the rough and transforming them into a beautiful show horse”. “A good horse is a good horse no matter what they do. A good racehorse can be good at absolutely anything at all,” she said. “Retraining racehorses isn’t something new, but it’s really important to get more people wanting to take on these horses.”

Three racing fashion enthusiasts have come together from across the country to organise and host the Virtual FOTF Competition. Viera Maciokova from @GetRacy, Bethany Braj from @best_dressed_access and Milano Imai @milanoimai @millinerymarket.

Khristina Vasko

These are very tough times of uncertainty for everyone around the world, people and businesses as COVID-19 continues to change life as we know it. In light of recent advice to cancel all non-essential events, there will be significant impact to our racing fashion community, especially small businesses, as this may mean no races and FOTF competitions for the foreseeable future.

Hosted by: @getracy

No races = no selling of racing fashion products and services = no income

getracy.com.au

There are so many businesses that will be impacted (milliners, dress makers, accessory shops, stylists, make-up artists, hairdressers etc., the list is endless) so we decided to come together and support one another, our sport and the associated businesses by continuing on with our outfits and spreading joy through our love of Fashions on the Field, in a virtual form.

Since 2014, Get Racy has been making racing fashion enthusiasts “race day ready” and looking stylish. Choose from a wide range of beautiful and affordable hats, fascinators, handbags, gloves, jewellery and other racing fashion accessories

We know that many people have already purchased and planned their outfits and it would be a shame for these not to be seen. The Virtual FOTF competition encourages women and men to get involved, put together an AW racing look and take a photo from the comfort of their homes- please see the T&C’s of the competition for further information on how to enter www. virtualfotf.com/terms-and-conditions/ There is a chance to win some amazing prizes donated by our supportive community, we were blown away by everyone’s generosity!! The competition has four rounds (3x women’s and 1x men’s) with a supreme winner chosen from the winners of each weekly round. ST PATRICK’S DAY I had the pleasure of attending, and being a Fashions on the Field Judge at the annual St Pat’s Race Day on Saturday 14th March, just before the nationwide lockdowns came into place. St Patrick’s is the premier race meeting in outback NSW. You can always expect to see crowds of 4,000+ flock to the Broken Hill Regional Events Centre in March each year for their eight-race program, with over $100,000 in prize money up for grabs. Set on a picturesque outback backdrop, our calendar of events provide the ultimate outback experience without traveling too far off the beaten track. My fellow judges, Melissa Barnes, Mija Reynolds and myself were impressed with the quality of entrants this year for the Fashions on the Field and Yvette Pomroy took the main prize for the second year in a row. The Story Behind the DVD Story & Images courtesy Robyn McIntyre

Passionate and enthusiastic are indeed understatements when describing Wg .Cdr. Ern Browne MBE Rtd*.’s reverence and love for the mighty and legendary Phar Lap – “Big Red” as he was affectionately known - and his famous strapper and trainer, Tommy Woodcock. In 1982, this passion led Ern to meet Tommy at his home and stables in Mentone, Victoria, and they formed a strong bond of friendship based on their mutual love of Phar Lap. They came together so that Ern could record their conversations over the course of three days, while Tommy signed a thousand Limited Edition prints from an original oil painting by Australian artist Robert Wettenhall commissioned by Ern of Phar Lap winning the 1930 Melbourne Cup.

These conversations of historical significance are a fascinating, informative and educational insight into this lightning-fast horse, whose grace, stamina and charisma mesmerised and lifted our nation’s hearts, minds and spirit during the Great Depression. They also give us an insight into the man, Tommy Woodcock – his kindness, generosity, sense of humour and his great love for Phar Lap.

Eunice’s daughter, Robyn Browne-McIntyre, has now put rare film of Phar Lap winning his last race at Agua Caliente winning the 1930 Melbourne Cup, his training sessions with Tommy Woodcock and rare interviews with his Owner/Trainer Harry Telford and Jockey Jim Pike and Tommy’s conversations to create a DVD: “Tommy Woodcock – Phar lap’s Strapper and Trainer - Talks With Ern Browne November 1982”. Robyn, together with Ern and Eunice’s son, Mark E. Browne, want to honour their parents’ legacy and wish to share this remarkable insight into the mighty Phar-Lap and his devoted strapper and trainer, Tommy Woodcock, with the Australian public in accordance with Ern’s vision.

The conversations have never before been released to the public. The tragic and untimely death in 1986 of Ern’s beloved wife Eunice, his devoted partner in this venture, caused Ern to not progress with it. Ern himself passed away in 2011. Ern and

Back to the beginning. During this time, Ern operating as Phar Lap Promotions, acquired trademarks and patents for a range of merchandise promoting Phar Lap, including T-shirts, key ring cases and a Port wine called “Phar Lap Big Tawny”. In 1983, the

movie “Phar Lap – Hero To A Nation” was released, promoted by Michael Edgley International. At the same time Michael Edgley International released a “Phar Lap” promotional port wine. Rightly asserting that Edgley’s port was breaching his patent, Ern prosecuted a court case against Michael Edgley International. The outcome was not in Ern’s favour. Though displeased, Ern was happy that he had stood up for his principles, the “little man” and that like Phar Lap, he had done his best and given it all he had.

Pharlap Port

During Ern’s and Tommy’s conversations, Tommy proved to have a big heart too. He talks about the Heart Specialist and vet, Dr. Stuart Mackay, who was mesmerised by Phar Lap’s heart. Dr. Mackay had formulated a recipe for a “Soothing Liniment” to treat Phar Lap’s cracked hooves and sent the formula to Tommy. Tommy had it made up and tells us how healing it was for Phar Lap’s hooves. We hear Tommy generously undertake to send this original recipe to Ern, which he did in 1983,. Amongst other Phar Lap memorabilia, we also hear Tommy kindly undertake to give Ern the shoes Phar Lap wore when he won his last race, the Agua Caliente Handicap, in 1932. In Ern’s own words: “That concludes my recordings of Tommy and I, Ern Browne, talking during three memorable days spent with Tommy in his home at Mentone and his stables nearby, on the 8th, 9th and 10th of November 1982. I hope you enjoy our talks”. * Ern Browne was a Wing Commander in the RAAF who had retired from the RAAF. He was awarded an MBE. The protocol for referring to someone as such is Wg. Cdr. RACING UPDATES ACROSS THE COUNTRY VICTORIA Racing Victoria (RV) wishes to advise of the following update about arrangements for Victorian racing in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Racing and training is currently permitted to continue in Victoria under strict biosecurity protocols developed in accordance with all the current directives, guidelines and advice established by the Victorian Government on the advice of the Chief Health Officer. That said, RV is continually reviewing the industry’s biosecurity protocols which serve to protect the health of industry staff, participants and the wider community; as well as minimise the risk of participants catching the virus which may in turn impact on the continuation of racing. Following consultation with the Victorian Jockeys Association (VJA) and Australian Trainers Association (ATA), the following additional protocols will be implemented until otherwise advised: Approved Green Team Jump-Outs Effective from Tuesday, 21 April 2020, jockeys in the Green Team will be permitted to participate in jump-outs conducted by the Melbourne Racing Club (MRC) at Caulfield or Sandown and the Victoria Racing Club (VRC) at Flemington. The prohibition on jockeys in the Green Team riding trackwork

16

SPIRIT OF RACING ISSUE #1

(including at Caulfield, Sandown and Flemington on the morning of Approved Green Team Jump-Outs) remains in place until otherwise advised, as does the prohibition on them participating in jump-outs at other training centres and Racecourses. The MRC and VRC will continue to manage the conduct of these jump-outs and will implement measures to maintain the segregation of participating jockeys in the Green Team and Gold Team as occurs on raceday. The Approved Green Team Jump-Outs have been established on the grounds of health and wellbeing, recognising the challenge that some riders have faced in maintaining their weight and fitness without trackwork permitted and with the closure of gyms, on-course spas and saunas. Effective from Sunday 19 April 2020 trainers are not permitted to bring a travelling companion for horses, including ponies, to any race meeting. Only horses engaged to compete at the race meeting will be allocated a stall and be permitted to enter the Racecourse. This protocol will assist Racing Clubs in their efforts to stable horses from training centres together on raceday and support social distancing measures. RACING UPDATES ACROSS THE COUNTRY

ZINZINO’S CONCEPT IS TO BALANCE YOUR BODY BACK TO GOOD HEALTH

In these uncertain times we all need to be on top of our health more than ever. Science and technology are developing at the fastest rate in human history. We now know more about nutrition and wellness than ever before. So why are our health challenges increasing? ZINZINO one of the leaders in the new science of pharmacronutrition believe they have the answer by simply testing our Omega-6 to Omega-3 ratio and then providing the BalanceOil that helps bring our bodies back into balance. Science’s new look at Balance involves the ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 essential fatty acids. Both are essential and vital to several functions in our bodies. The problem is the imbalances between these fatty acids have been created by changes in our diet over the past number of years. Too much dietary Omega-6 in your body creates imbalance. A low intake of the essential Omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA creates imbalance. The problem is that we eat more Omega-6 and a lot less Omega-3. Where you want to be: Ratio 3:1 Science recommends you have a ratio of 3.1 between essential fatty acids Omega-6 and Omega-3 People who take an Omega-3 Supplement: Shockingly even people who take an Omega-3 supplement have an average ratio of 13:1 Where you probably are: People who don’t take an Omega-3 Supplement are out of balance with anything from 13:1 to 21:1 and above.

beyond anything we have seen before, when omega 3 is the subject. It is also one of the strongest antioxidants there is to protect the fish oil, not only in the bottle, but also in your body when reacting with digestive enzymes, stomach acid and bile etc. Normally Vitamin E is used for this, but higher dosages of vitamin E can be toxic, so we cannot use enough vitamin E to protect the oil sufficiently when it comes into our bodies and reacts with digestive enzymes etc.,

THE ZINZINO BALANCE TEST The balance test that Zinzino offers; tests for 11 different fatty acids, and the omega 6 to omega 3 ratio, which should be 3:1 to be out of the danger zone. The Balance oil comes in 3 flavours, lemon, vanilla, and lemon/ orange/mint. There are and 3 types of Balance Oil to cater for specific needs: Regular, water soluble and there is a Vegan option. If you would like a free sample of Zinzino Balance Oil please email cameredith11@gmail.com and we will post one to you. To find out more about these amazing oils and how to get your body back into balance please visit www.zinzino.com/2006024248/AU/en-GB/ products/Balance/910240

The BalanceOil is a Scandinavian product that is a combination of fish and olive oil, that yields a product that contributes to the maintenance of normal vision, muscle function and bone structure to mention just a few of the amazing benefits it provides.

OUR UNIQUE COMBINATION OMEGA-3 + POLYPHENOLS = RESULTS Wild fish oil and algae Balance Oil contains the highest quality fish oil and is derived from small pelagic fish such as sardines, anchovies and mackerel that feed off algae that have a high content of beta carotene, omega 3 and vitamin D. Balance Oil Vegan comes from the marine micro algae Schizochytrium sp. that is rich in the Omega fatty acids EPA and DHA

Polyphenols are from Olives BalanceOil contains a special cold - pressed extra virgin preharvest oil from Spanish GMO free picual olives. It is rich in Omega-9 but is selected for its high content of polyphenols. These polyphenols bring with it a protection factor that goes

J.A.R MILLINERY Hi everyone, what a way to start the year! Better times ahead I’m sure. I was throwing myself into the upcoming Autumn/Winter Carnival with many creations and events happening, and BANG it’s gone, along with my mojo. I closed the door of my studio and did not go back for at least 2 weeks. I then started going in for maybe 30 mins or an hour. Maybe more maybe less. Good news, I am feeling refreshed and not exhausted. For me it has been a positive shut down and has allowed me to regenerate and refresh my mind. I love bright colours and wanted to make my social media posts happy and bright . You know things are dull when you decorate a pair of rubber gloves with yellow and orange fluro cuffs then post a pic of you cleaning the loo! My goodness times are desperate. On the up side everyone in the world knows I have a clean loo! I pondered over what I could do to stay present in these times and luck would have it, shoes I had ordered for an event arrived in the post. I’ve never waited so long for a pair of shoes in all my life. These shoes kick started my mojo and I’m happy to say I’ve have started sharing pictures of my shoes. Sadly for me I no longer have a collection of Mr Christians from the 1980’s. My God they were amazing! I started with the post of my amazing green velvet and gold bling shoes. From there I’ve taken hats from my personal collection to compliment the shoes and started posting to Instagram and Facebook. Using my shoes as a go to, I’m now incorporating my headwear that is available for purchase. I am having fun. This is when you find out just what you have in the cupboard. Posts will also show my husband’s hats - who’s a lucky boy! Some of the men’s collection are also available for purchase. Included in the men’s range are handmade accessories. As time progresses I’ll continue to post with lots of colour and cheer. I’m looking forward to the next opportunity to create a custom order for one of my clients. I do hope my bright and cheery social media posts bring colour, a smile to your day and lift your heart as they do mine. www. jarmillinery.com
