CATHY HUANG Master of Landscape Architecture Student
2017 | Yilan City, Taiwan Architecture Intern FieldOffice Architects
I have a wide range of skills across a number of computer based programmes that I am constantly seeking to improve. Most of my work begins in simple and diagrammatic drawings which I have a strong focus on in order to convey ideas, experiences and moments. The process from sketching to digital representation to modeling forms an important part of my design philosophy, and it has served me well exploring the infinite possibilities of landscape architecture.

NOORDHOEK BASIN
Since the start of urbanisation, the slopes surrounding Noordhoek and wetland systems being fed by mountain catchments has been under immense strain. There has been loss in natural ecosystems, habitats and biodiversity that once thrived in the area. This project seeks to evaluate the condition of the existing waterbodies of the basin and offer a solution in remedying these impacts.
WESTERN CAPE, SOUTH AFRICA Landscape Systems Analysis | UCT BLA (Hons) | 2019 01
This analysis based project sought to practically explore the way we engage with landscape systems in service of achieving goals of sustainability and human wellbeing. The approach is to view ecosystems in an urban environment as ecological infrastructure, evaluate ecosystem functioning and processes in terms of ecosystem services.

Site Plan
Wedged between suburban life and the upcoming commercial business hub of the northern corridor in Cape Town, the 40 hectare site was historically a mining site for a brick factory. A quarry, patches of remnant vegetation and eucalyptus avenues are what remain of the site today where a development plan for a new hospital is in progress.
02
A new green interface for the anticipated hospital development was imagined in hopes of strengthening the existing ecological corridor as well as providing key public domain facilities to the new and existing communities in and around the site.
TYGERVALLEY HOSPITAL PRECINCT
A pre-existing drainage line was used as a design cue, with a new urban creek woven around the built structures and hard landscaping. New pedestrian paths emanate from the form of the creek, structuring movement and use and strengthening the relationship

SIDNEY MEYER ASIA CENTRE, MELBOURNE MCLArch | Landscape Detail Design | 2020
03
This project explores the creative, practical and technical aspects of landscape architecture’s design process throughout to construction. The aim was to communicate design into the language of construction documentation emphasising the materiality and assemblage of hardscapes. This intervention outside the Sidney Meyer Asia Centre seeks to maximise the water runoff collected from the slope and roof to sustain a water feature and raingarden. Creating a moment of rest in the rush and bustle of university and city culture.

Union House
Baldwin
The University of Melbourne’s Parkville campus Union Lawn had once consisted of an area of wetland fed by a small stream. Initial development of the campus transformed this wetland into an ornamental lake, which was later filled in and replaced by a mixture of hard surfaces, plantings and other landscape features we see there today. The aim of the project was to concieve a new masterplan and detailed designed areas to transform this much-used space into a new and exciting area for students and staff, incorporating constructed wetlands, trafficable paved areas and vegetated spaces. An underlying theme involved sustainable urbanism, focusing on the relationships renewable energy, water, materials, waste, ecology and community has with sociable spaces and the heritage values that the site contains.
The walkway is located near the recreational ‘play’ area, and a fun form was imagined for the support structure and handrail to evoke the playful spirit of this space as the users walk up to the platform over the wetland.

Hardy groundcovers and grasses are selected to ensure survivability whilst flowering and fragant plants enhance user experience and attract polliinators.
The terraced garden not only serves as a gathering spot, but also an area for relaxation and reflection. Planting at the edges will form safe pockets for people to retreat to and niches of planting of the inner areas break up the tough tactility of the bluestone steps and timber seating.
