1.0 THREE RELATIONSHIPS
Point, line and plane indicate the space between the ground, mass symbolizes the space under the ground and frame and infill represent the space above the ground. From air to earth, from light to heavy, from void to occupied, and from NEGATIVE to POSITIVE.

1.1 POINT / LINE / PLANE Multiple points form a line, and multiple lines form a plane. They do not need to necessarily connected to each other. Your mind with join them up. The sketch model started up with simply one point, one line and one plane. I like the simple form of it and then combined it with the concept that I am interested in, which is the positive and negative space to created this final model. I also like how lines and shapes can give a direction and focus in a obscure way. The angle and arrangement of lines encourage people to the entry in the corner. Space behinds the plans are the secret and the negative space sort of gives you a hint of the space behind and attract people to discover more.

1.2 MASS Mass is something huge, solid and heavy. I tried to achieve this stereotype of mass from the outside and created a large area inside the concrete box. From outside no one can realize there is a lot of space inside and that is the secret of this structure. I wanted to highlight the beauty and warmth of light therefore I created a really dark and void space with only one light source. The shape is inspired by one of my abstract drawing and the whole experience is like a journey. Entering a long, narrow and dark corridor and then come the cone space. The beam of light becomes the secret and focus of this structure.

1.3 FRAME & INFILL Frame and infill is the contrast of permanent and temporary. Frame acts as the main supporting element and infill guides and separates spaces. This model is inspired by the movement of infill across the rigid frame in the camper showroom by Shen Zhonghai (2013). For the frame I tried to keep it simple in a square shaped frame. In this model I was more focused on the use of lines to create movement and guidelines for the circulation in side the structure instead of positive and negative space. From the side view photos they shows how the sides are halfly closed by the infill and guiding people to the entry and follow the circulation in a obscure way.

2.0 HERRING ISLAND. SOMETHING LIKE A PAVILION
Secret, something not known or seen by others. It can be an object, history or something not truly exist. In the journey of revealing a secret we are nervous yet excited. It is because no one knows what is there. There is a secret inside the pavilion. And the pavilion itself is another secret concealed, which can be revealed through your mind.

SCULPTURE SHELTER GALLERY CIRCULATION POPULATION PAVILION LOCATION 16
2.1 SITE ANALYSIS
Herring Island is a artificial island located in South Yarra. It was first act as a basalt quarry in early 1900’s. There is only one access in Herring Island. The population density is mainly affected by the walking trail and sculpture location. North bank is nosier due to the city link from the north, however south bank has less tree coverage. Since Herring Island is a small island with lots of sculpture there already, my aim is to create something not too big in size and can blends with the surrounding sculptures easily. Area that is not too close to the north bank with enough tree coverage is the target area I want my pavilion located. The pavilion location is 4 m high and there is a slope to 6 m on the right which allows people to view the top of the pavilion.

2.2 CONCEPTACLE
The similarities and main themes that I was focusing on in my previous work are the contrast of positive and negative space and how they work together to form another new shape or form. Usually circle is used and a sense of movement is also applied. For the conceptacle same shape of pieces are repeated and arranged in a circular form. A negative sphere was then created in the middle and two circles are also created from the top view. All the pieces are not connecting and touching each other but due to the arrangement of pieces we are able to join them and form the shape in our mind.

2.3 CONCEPT AND SKETCH DESIGN For my conceptacle each segment is a thin piece that no closed space can be created in such situation. For my sketch design I tried to enlarge each segment according to their usage and have a negative sphere inside. However this design is over driven by the requirements and neglect the lightweight and movement in my conceptacle. Therefore I start it all over from the relationship between spaces.

PATHWAY

2.4 DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
For this design I started with the relationship between spaces and arrange them according to the direction of pathway. I do not want to have a fixed entry or exist and this arrangement allows people enter the pavilion from any directions. Secret is placed in the center to make sure people see it at the end of the journey. This final design is inspired by Yoshinobu Miyamoto (2000) of how a series of lines twist and connect together to give movement and create space. Three lines of spaces are then created and by curving them it adds a sense of movement into the form. The secret in the middle is then be protected and concealed. Two negative circles are also formed form top view.

2.5 FINAL DESIGN DRAWINGS
TOP
FRONT
The final design can be separated into three curved lines. Each line is formed by individual shelters. Three lines started from the same point and spread out with increasing in size. I believe sheltered space does not need to have fixed zone therefore they are separated and located in different area. The sheltered area comes with a range of size for different users. The time capsule in the center of the pavilion is a small piece of basalt because Herring Island was a basalt quarry and the time required to form this sedimentary rock makes it become the time capsule of this island.

2.6 FINAL DESIGN MODEL
The user experience is like a journey which starts with huge block and narrow corridor and then the view gets clear and clear till you arrived the opened space in the middle. The blocks increase in size from point to line, plane, fame and infill till large mass shelter at the end.

3.0 REFLECTION
Through out the semester I discovered and understand more about the relationship of space above and below ground. Earth is the place we lived and the canvas for architecture. Therefore earth is the first aspect to start with out of the four elements. I have learnt three different architecture tectonics and express my ideas using different media and methods. For me I would like to use model to express my ideas more since three dimensional models allow people to feel and understand all the details of a design easily. I find the frame and infill exercise most challenging because there are more restrictions and limitation of the definition of frame and infill. Due to the restrictions there are less opportunity to create something interesting in my own style. For my frame and infill design I hope I can change the shape of frame into other shape, like triangle or different size of boxes instead of the 2 x 2 cube form. Other than that I am very happy with the final form of the pavilion because it keeps the lightweight feeling and rotating movement from the conceptacle and also satisfies the requirements. In this subject I discover a very interesting concept which is the use of positive and negative space. I enjoy how the two opposite spaces join and connect together only in our mind to form certain forms or shapes. I hope I can keep on discovering more in this theme and create designs in response to this concept in the future. I also like how lines and planes can affect and guide the users to desired direction and I believe that is what a good architecture should do, guiding users to appropriate space with desired circulation for the bets experience inside the structure. This is another aspect I would like to discover more in the other architecture studios.
