My chosen object was a expanding folder. It is square in shpae with only straight lines, therefore I can use a ruler to measure all the lengths and draw on a paper easily. Most of the drawings are 1:2 and some of them are 1:1.

Although I can measure all the lenghts easily it is hard for me to draw the isometric view without reference. I took a photo of the opened expanding folder in an angle similar to isometric view for a better understanding of the shape. Then I draw it on a tracing paper which underlay with an isometric grid printed paper.

Analysis

The expanding folder is mainly formed by two elements: the constraining folder and the cover. Dividers are added at the end to create compartments. The constraining folder is created by only one plane. The plane is folded evenly in opposite direction to form a zigzag pattern. The plane then become expandable which can change in length easily.

The whole plane is 150x 420 mm. It is folded into 28 small fragments (150x 15 mm).

4

The cover is the one that hold and control the constraining folder. Two ends of the constrained plane stick to the cover and volume is created. The volume of the folder varies in the angle of the cover opended. When the folder is opended, the bottom of the flexible part compress and forms a fan shpae.

ISOMETRIC VIEW

1.

2.

3. 1. Pictureframe and scale the cover of folder. Edgesurface the cover in the top view. Fold them to the suitable angle using Gumball. 2. Create half of the plans of the constraining part using edgesurface, copy and paste. Place them evenly inside the cover . 3. Rotate the plans for zigzag pattern using Gumball. Mirror them for a whole fan-shape. 4. Copy and paste the constraining part and place it on the other side of the cover.

5. Create a divider using edgesurface and multiply it. Place them inside the folder.

Sketch Model

The main idea of my reconfigured model is the flexible part of the expanding folder. The orginial version is simple but only travels in one direction. I try to add diagonal lines to each column and reverse fold them. By doing so in two directions and combine them with the unreverse folded part, a curve is created. Volume is also created under the model using only one paper. The whole thing can still compress together as one thinner form and this pattern also strengthen the paper itself. PLAN

Sketch Design #1 PORTABLE, PROTECTIVE, DEFENSIVE

What is your idea? [Maximum 5 key words]

FRONT

Holes are created for better ventilation.

SIDE

The front side is shorter which allow user sleeps on their arms.

This design is inspired by hedgehog’s sting. The model is formed by reverse fold.

How does this respond to your personal space?

Magnets are used on both tips for easy attachment.

10

It can be fold into a thinner layer. Open and rotate 360° when use.

This design can cover up all the facial features and also the whole head down to shoulder area , which provides users the maximum protection from the others while sleeping.

Sketch Design #2 PORTABLE, SIMPLE, LIGHTWEIGHT

What is your idea? [Maximum 5 key words]

FRONT

This design is inspired by plant.

SIDE

It is a very simple design with few components, which makes it lightweight.

The flexible part is folded in zigzag form. It acts like the stem of a plant.

How does this respond to your personal space?

This design can be folded. The curve line that used to place on shoulder is made with wire. It can twist to a smaller size.

Flip the cover over from the back and twist to suitable angle when use.

Area in front of a person’s face is the most sensitive area that requires more protection. This design can hide and cover user’s facial features with minimum components.

Sketch Design #3 PORTABLE, ROTATABLE, REPETITIVE

What is your idea? [Maximum 5 key words]

FRONT

This model is inspired by clown neck ruffle.

SIDE

The fornt is higer than the side for a sense of security.

This design can be folded to a smaller size. Magnets are used on both tips for easy attachment. Rotate it 360° when use.

How does this respond to your personal space?

The mechanism of this design is to fold the panel in zigzag pattern and then press the bottom part together to create a fan-shape like structure.

12

This design aim to keep others from a suitable distance without covering user’s face. This neck ruffle can maintain certain distance and allow user looks and breathes normally.
