CAPTAIN’S CHARITY

So why “My Name’5 Doddie Foundation”?

Doddie Weir was not only a Scottish International rugby player with 61 caps and a British and Irish Lion, but through the dignity in which he bore his illness and his determination to help others suffering from Motor Neuron Disease (MND), he became a national treasure and legend north of the Border. In seeking a charity for my year as Captain I made an emotional connection with Doddie when I saw his portrait in the National Portrait Gallery of Scotland the week after he died from MND. I am passionate about rugby and with the demise of Joost van der Westhuizen, Doddie and now Rob Burrows battling this awful illness, I just wanted to raise some money to help eliminate MND.

What has surprised me most is just how this charity has connected with so many members at the Club. It is a disease which affects not just high-profile rugby players but is much more common in the general population than we think.

You have already been very supportive and I thank you for your generosity. Supporting “My Name’5 Doddie Foundation” has been one of the main highlights of my Captaincy and if we can raise additional funds tonight then all I can say is “thank you!”
