a farewell General Manager's Update
Dear Member, It has been several weeks since Tom Cole’s email updating the membership that I had accepted a new opportunity and I would be departing in early April. Since that correspondence, I have spoken with, and met with many Members and staff. These heartfelt conversations only remind me how lucky I have been in the past seven years to be your General Manager. Cattail is a special place; I realized that very shortly after arriving at the Club! As I mentioned in my presentation during the Annual Meeting on March 18, there are many people I must thank who have been instrumental in allowing me to succeed while at the Club. First the staff, whose tireless efforts and hard work allowed me to make the Club into a true family country club, and offer an assortment of social events that appealed to all ages and interests. Second, the Executive Committee, Board of Directors and Committees at the Club - anyone that is involved in a volunteer capacity at the Club understands how much work and effort is required. Finally and most importantly, our Membership, which is second to none; seeing you on a daily basis put a smile on my face and made me look forward to coming to work day in and day out. The Club is entering a new chapter in its young history,as we celebrate our 20th Anniversary this year. I am sorry that I will not be there to celebrate with you but I have all the confidence in the world that your Executive ManagementTeam will deliver you an amazing event.
Whether it is the Anniversary Party, the Gentlemen's Invitational, one of our Guests Days, a Family Night or that special party you want to share with family at the Club, they will be there, and they will do a great job. They make up the best team I have ever worked with, and I will miss each and every one of them. I have enjoyed my time at Cattail and while I am excited about moving on to my new opportunity at Hillendale Country Club, it is slowly sinking in that I will not be seeing many of you on a daily basis. I am very proud of the job that I was able to do at the Club, and also the employees and Members who I had the privilege of working with. We have always operated in a team environment, and we enjoyed taking on new challenges; it only made it that much sweeter when we succeeded! Enjoy the 2013 season, and when in the Towson area feel free to drop in on an old friend, I will be waiting and looking forward to “reminiscing about the old days.” Sincerely,
Joe Fulco, CCM, CCE General Manager

SOCIAL MEDIA TIPS...
FOR HELPING YOUR CLUB LYNN SLUPSKI [MEMBERSHIP MARKETING DIRECTOR]
The Club has recently begun an advertising campaign on Facebook intended to generate interest in new memberships this spring. This is a cost-effective advertising method for us because we only pay based on the number of people who actually click on the ads. I wanted to inform you of this new marketing initiative because I would like to kindly ask that you refrain from clicking on our advertisements if they appear on your Facebook page or newsfeed. Clicking on the links only takes you to the request information page on our public website, and since you are already a valued Member of the Club, you can help us save money by not clicking. How You Can Help Promote Cattail with Social Media We continue to invest in search engine efforts (SEO) which make our website appear at the top of result lists when people search Google for terms linked to us (golf, tennis, swim team, country club, Howard County, etc.). You may be aware that social media ‘likes’ and ‘shares’ do wonders to help promote and advertise the Club’s SEO efforts further because it tells the internet ‘powers-to-be’ that we are the real deal! Here’s how you can help boost Cattail Creek awareness on the internet in ways that have little or no impact on you. 1. BECOME OUR FACEBOOK FRIEND! CLICK HERE TO ‘FRIEND US.’ We only accept Members as friends on our private Facebook page. Becoming our ‘friend’ helps us, and also benefits you, because you are then privy to first line of communication announcements, contests, prizes and offerings that we only promote on Facebook, and much more such as pictures from our special events.
2. LIKE OUR PUBLIC FACEBOOK PAGE! CLICK HERE TO ‘LIKE US.’
4. +1 US ON GOOGLE! CLICK HERE TO DO IT NOW.
Anyone with a Facebook account can ‘like’ our public page. Obtaining as many ‘likes’ as possible on our public page is the absolute best way to help our SEO as far as Facebook goes. ‘Liking’ the page helps the Club, but will benefit you too because we put different fun and informative content on our ‘public’ page than we do our our private 'friend’ page.
Members who have a gmail email address, can click the above link to view our Google Plus page, and then click the +1 button on the header. You won’t get any additional communication from us, but you help us spread our awareness in the community via your network, and it again boosts our SEO rankings.
1. "frien d" us
2. "like" us
3. "che ck
in" at th e club!
4. +1 us on goog le
5. writ e a pos itive
review
3. CHECK-IN, SHARE, TAG, LIKE, AND POST ABOUT CATTAIL ON FACEBOOK! The more you ‘check-in’ at the Club, share our notes and videos, and tag us in posts, statuses, and photos on Facebook, the higher our general internet SEO ratings become, and the more exposure and reach we have to potential Members. We have been known to give out prizes and jungle juice when we see Members posting great things about the Club!
5. WRITE A POSITIVE REVIEW ABOUT US ON GOOGLE – CLICK HERE I guarantee there will be prizes in the future for this one! As we generate more internet traffic to our site, it goes without saying that positive reviews are paramount. If you love your Club, and your membership experience, please consider writing a quick positive review for us. Word-of-Mouth is Still the Best Type of Referral! Last year rocked in terms of current Members referring their friends, neighbors, and colleagues. I am asking you again this year to please continue to talk up the Cattail membership experience. Forwarding the online link to this newsletter is a great way to start! Here’s to a great spring season! I sincerely appreciate your taking the time to read this important email, and I hope you’ll help us out in some of the ways mentioned above! Graciously,
Lynn Slupski Membership Marketing Director lynn@cattailcreekcc.com 410.489.4653 ext. 233

RICKY'S NOTES: Three tips to start the season off right! RICKY SERRANO [DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTION] How are you planning to get the golf season off to a great start? Is 2013 the year you'll break 100, break 90, or break 80? If this is the year you are going to take your game to the next level, follow these easy steps to put your best foot forward this spring. Step 1: Take a lesson. The most efficient way to start off the the season right is to come see me for a lesson; don't wait until things start going awry. While a lesson in that instance is a good way to turn things around, starting your season with good foundation is an even better approach. Step 2: Practice your putting and chipping. It doesn't always come back "just like riding a bike," especially when it comes to putting and chipping. Good putting and a good short game is critical to scoring well, so spending some time on the putting green and short game area is important Putting Drill: Start out finding a putt with very little break on the putting green. Place several balls at a distance of about three feet, and work on hitting solid putts into the back of the hole. Try to make 10 to 15 in a row before quitting. Chipping Drill: The motion made chipping the golf ball is a miniature version of the full swing. Hitting crisp, solid chip shots will translate into solid hit shots with the full swing. Remember, the correct technique is to set up with a narrow stance, weight on the front foot and the ball position off the instep of the back foot. Grip down on the club and make a short, brisk, accelerated stroke. Step 3: The full swing. The fastest way to get your timing back is by making short, easy swings with a pitching wedge or a sand wedge. As you start to get a feel for where the club is, and you start making some solid contact, start to make some full swings. Progress through your clubs by hitting a series of shots with every other club in your bag. Move from sand wedge to nine iron to seven iron. Finally, hit your fairway woods, and then the driver. Going through these steps of practice will give you your feel back for your putting and short game, and help you to hit the ball solidly. Confidence plays such a huge roll in how we play, so starting the season off on the right foot will make lowering those scores much easier.
TYSON'S RULE OF THE MONTH: ORDER OF PLAY (Rule 10) TYSON McFARLAND [ASSISTANT GOLF PROFESSIONAL] There are differences between the order of play for Match Play (Rule 10-1) and Stroke Play (Rule 10-2) situations. During Stroke Play, order is viewed mostly as etiquette. The player who scored the lowest score on the previous hole has the “honor” on the next tee. During play of the hole, the player whose ball lies the furthest from the hole is next to play. In Match Play, however, order of play is far more important and it helps to know the rules of golf and allow them to work in your favor. If your opponent in Match Play hits out of turn, you have the option to require them to re-play their shot. For example, if your opponent hits a beautiful drive down the middle of the fairway but plays out of turn, you could force them to replay the shot. Conversely, if your opponent hits a drive out of bounds or in a hazard and the shot was played out of turn, it would behoove you not to have them hit the shot again. Order of Play adds an element of “gamesmanship” to Match Play, allowing you to apply pressure to your opponent if you are able to hit a good shot or hole a putt.

SOCIAL COMMMITTEE NEWS: LURDES ABRUSCATO [CCWGA MEMBERSHIP CHAIR] Cattail’s Bling To Benefit Worthy Causes February’s Stella & Dot jewelry party/cocktail mixer – the first of several social events hosted this year by the CCWGA Social Committee – was a great forum for socializing with women Members in a non-traditional club setting. What began as a small get-together for a few Cattail ladies over jewelry shopping and drinks, quickly grew into an energetic and altruistic gathering, with more than 50 attendees, additional post-event orders from Members who couldn’t attend, and sales just under $3,000! Proceeds from the jewelry purchases (more than $800 in Stella & Dot credits) will be applied to the CCWGA’s largest fundraising benefits, including the Rally for the Cure on May 19, and the 9-Hole Invitational for Pancreatic Cancer Research on September 17. In addition to offering a fun way to support two worthwhile charities, the event engaged a wide cross-section of Members, including golfers, tennis players, and both new, and long-time Members. Plus, the mixer granted unique access to the entire Golf Professional Staff, as they generously spent the evening mingling with the crowd and fielding numerous questions.
First Day of Spring Ushers in Start of Women’s Golf Season (photos below) The CCWGA’s Spring Fling, our annual kickoff party for women golfers, met with great attendance and even greater enthusiasm. More than 50 women came out to enjoy an evening of fun, mingling with many familiar friends and new faces alike. In addition to learning more about our 9-Hole A.M., Twilight and 18-Hole leagues, attendees enjoyed cocktails and treats while browsing new spring and summer golf attire from multiple vendors. Highlighting the evening, raffle purchases enabled five lucky women to win private, 30-minute golf lessons, generously donated by each Golf Professional (head pro Bob Wampler even donated two)! The raffle effort brought in $540, to be applied to the CCWGA’s two fundraising efforts, event expenses, and prize fund for leagues.

GREEN REPORT CHRIS HARRIMAN [GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT] Compared to last year, it has been a slow start to the golf season! We are seeing temperatures 30 degrees lower than a year ago, not to mention those 5 inches of snow at the end of March! Still, soil temperatures have nowhere to go but up, and the turf will be blasting off before you know it. Spring Aerification is really coming along, there are few fairways left for topdressing with sand. We have used over 320 tons of sand this spring on our greens, tees and fairways. The topdressing helps water infiltrate the surface, protects the plant from mower, cart and golfer traffic, and helps firm up the surface. Most importantly, the sand fills up aerification holes so that
air and water can reach the roots of the turf, promoting a deep healthy root system. As the creeping bentgrass grows over the aerification holes, roots drive through the sand channels. Over the next week or two, our playing surfaces will heal. As soil temperatures rise, our tall fescue seedlings will also begin to wake up. These areas that we intensively seeded last fall will again be supplemented with the appropriate nutrients and pushed to fill in. The compost that was applied to these areas late last fall has already helped warm up the soil, which has resulted in an early green-up. We are excited to see how well the tall fescue does through the summer, and then to implement more ryegrass to the turf type tall fescue transition areas on the Course.
With the warmer temperatures, we know more activity will pick up on the Course. We remind all golfers to be aware of, and fix their own ball marks on the greens. The cart rules will remain the same as last year, except for one change; we will be allowing cart traffic down on #14 fairway. Cart access rules are posted on a card in the roof of your cart. Cart traffic should be concentrated in the fairways, and not in the rough or on the mounds. All carts should gently start to exit the fairways at or before the brown posts. Most importantly, please scatter your traffic to a fresh area; do not follow the exact path someone else has driven. These simple rules will help keep the Course consistent and beautiful. We are looking forward to a great 2013 season!

Staff Corner Julie Seanez continues to be an integral part of the Tennis Staff, and with the addition of Celia, she is now able to solely focus on USTA and other interclub or intraclub outlets!
Meet Lauren Burns, Merchandise Coordinator Hello! I'm very excited to be joining the Cattail Staff as Merchandise Coordinator this May! My position at Cattail will allow me to be focused on Members' needs, and take the Golf Shop in a direction where desired products are delivered with outstanding customer service. I'm finishing out my senior year at Trine University in Angola, Indiana; I will graduate in May with a BSBA in Management and a BSBA in Golf Management and Marketing. At Trine, I am the Women’s Varsity Golf Team Captain and the President of Delta Mu Delta, the business school’s honor society. I am originally from northeastern Ohio, where I was able to experience Cleveland sports, lake effect snow, and chocolate and peanut butter buckeyes at a very young age. I enjoy golfing, swimming, skiing, yoga, and also eating queso at the local Mexican restaurant. I have been golfing since I was about eight years old, and while I was more interested in swimming for several years, I joined the golf team in high school since my Mom was the coach, and fell back in love with the sport! I am the middle child of three sisters, and my favorite food is bread. As a child, I had braces three times, so do not be alarmed if you come in to the Golf Shop and I'm smiling ear to ear - I am just trying to get my money’s worth! I traveled to Maryland for the first time to interview for the position, so if you have recommendations for local places to visit, activities to do, or organizations to join, I am all ears! Thanks for welcoming me to Cattail, and I'm looking forward to meeting all of you soon.

Celia lives in Glenwood with her husband and four children. She was born in Portugal, and speaks Portugese and Spanish. In her free time, she enjoys reading, traveling, and hitting the beach! Celia is looking forward to seeing farmiliar faces and getting to know many more Members in the Tennis Pro Shop this season. Look out for more information about the Tennis Shop Opening, slated to occur mid-April, depending on the construction process!

FITNESS UPDATE Using Foam Rollers JOHN FOELBER [FITNESS DIRECTOR] We have recently acquired five new foam rollers in the Fitness Center! Using the foam roller has many benefits, and I'd like to tell you about a few of them. 1. It helps prevent common injuries. One important reason for a regular foam-rolling routine is to prevent common exerciserelated injuries. Daily foam rolling ensures you are massaging away fascia and scar tissue buildup in your muscles, which helps prevent those areas from becoming injury trigger points. 2. It improves circulation for recovery. Improved blood circulation throughout your skin, fascia, muscles, and even tendons and ligaments where you can access them with a foam roller helps with muscle recovery. 3. Lengthening of short muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Sometimes, short or tight muscles and ligaments are the source of a joint or movement pattern becoming dysfunctional and producing pain and stiffness. If you would like to know more about our new foam rollers I would be more than happy to show you proper technique. Just ask me!
Recently we have seen an increase in usage of the Fitness Center, which is a great thing! The newly formed Fitness Committee has already been discussing ways to ensure continued availability as more Members make their physical fitness, health and wellbeing a high priority. Between the cardio equipment, weight machines, DB benches, cable cross over and stretching areas, we actually have 21 available areas to exercise in the Fitness Center! If you’re working out and feel a bit squished, take a moment to look around. I think you'll find a spot to do your exercise, and you will probably realize that you are surrounded by family and friends, which is not a bad problem to have! Whether it is early morning, mid-day, or late at night, I look forward to seeing many of you this month in the Fitness Center.

USTA NEWS JULIE SEANEZ [USTA COORDINATOR] The Spring Adult 18 & Over season will now begin the week of April 15; we pushed back our season by a week due to the weather delaying our ability to get the Courts ready. The 3.0 and 3.5 Men will play out of Carroll County this spring, but will have some home matches at Cattail. The other sites are Liberty High School and South Carroll High School. The 4.0 Men will play out of Cattail exclusively on Monday evenings and possibly some weekends. Cattail’s 40 & Over Women’s 3.0 league will begin the week of April 28. There are 3 teams competing at this level. Interclub Cattail has joined two different women’s interclub leagues. Our beginner level Green C league consists of 2.5 and 3.0 players. The other clubs in the league include Aspen Hill, Flower Valley, Argyle, Norbeck and Lakewood. Matches are held on Thursday mornings. Cattail will host Norbeck on April 25, Lakewood on May 9, and Argyle on May 16. The away matches are at Flower Valley on April 18 and Aspen Hill on May 2. All matches consist of 5 lines of doubles. The intermediate/advanced interclub is called Foxy Ladies, with 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5 levels playing. Teams from Frederick, Congressional, Flower Valley, Bretton Woods, Rockville, Bethesda, and Olney participate in this league. Matches are also on Thursdays with Cattail’s home courts being at the Olney Park. If you would like to play on the Foxy Ladies team, click here. Intraclub In addition to USTA and interclub; the Tennis Professional Staff will offer several intraclub tennis challenge ladders during late spring and summer. 20 CAT TALES NEWSLETTER
• Match format will consist of 2 regular scoring sets, set tiebreak to be played at 6 games all (first to 7 points by 2). If players split the first and second sets, the third set will be a match tiebreak (first to 10 points by 2). • Players who make the playoffs will be determined by match win/loss record. In the event of a tying record, the tiebreak will be the head to head match. • The top 4 players in the challenger round robin will advance to the championship round. • Cattail Creek Challenger League results and standings will be posted weekly.
A Word from the Pro: JOE MATTINGLY [DIRECTOR OF TENNIS] We are only weeks away from the opening of the 2013 outdoor season. Our goal is still to open the courts the week of April 8. We have moved all of our league matches back one week, with a start date of April 15, just in case we do get some additional inclement weather. Online registration for spring clinics and summer programs has been fantastic! I encourage everyone to sign up in advance for any clinic that you might be interested in so that we can guarantee you a spot. There are already several clinics that are filled completely! Please keep in mind that there will be a new check in policy implemented this season. Check in at the front desk will be required prior to any activity on the Courts; including ball machine use, lessons, clinics, league play, etc. This will allow the Tennis Professional Staff to be more accurate with billing, as well as court usage numbers. We look forward to seeing you all out on the Courts very soon!

TIM'S TIP OF THE MONTH: TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES TIM HALTER [HEAD TENNIS PROFESSIONAL] Relying on overdone technique to learn tennis invariably results in relying on overdone technique to win matches. What is wrong with that? Everything! Technique does not play the match, you do. I have taught before about players using technique as a crutch. Let's say you have been learning tennis with overdone technique and you miss a shot while playing a match. You will probably scold yourself, blaming the miss on some bad or neglected technique. In this scenario, you are guilty of letting technique play your match and become a crutch. If the technique acts as your crutch, YOU do not have to accept personal responsibility for your failures, nor do you have to mentally move on. You have simply transferred all responsibility to the technique. The bad technique made me fail, not me! From another perspective, overemphasis on technique can also be viewed as a dam which obstructs the positive flow of Tennis Warrior thinking. As you know, when you are in a tennis match the match itself has its ebbs and flows. Those are unavoidable and must be accepted as part of the game. Your thinking, however, which is completely under your control, has its own ebbs and flows. Your chance of winning goes up dramatically if you can mentally stay on an even keel, steadily moving forward and never waning, throughout the match. When your thinking is consumed with technique, this continuous, positive flow is blocked. You create a mental dam. Your mind is now too preoccupied with negatives, with bad techniques, and with the problems that you believe can be solved if only you had the right technique!
But technique does not win a match, YOU DO. When facing the challenges inherent in match play, you must free your mind to forget bad technique and keep moving forward. Players who are overly focused on technique set themselves up for failure. Remember, we are dealing with the mind here, and the mind has a huge propensity to remember failures. If you constantly, and, I might add, innocently, scold yourself for bad technique every time you miss, you are creating a mental buildup of failures. The dam you built is now grabbing and holding on to every failure that sweeps along its path.Trouble on the horizon! Failure stacks on top of failure; every time you make a mistake, a similar failure in your past is instantly recalled and combined with the new failure. You think, "I just made that mistake and corrected the bad technique, but then I did the mistake again! What is wrong with me?" This is obviously not a healthy mental situation. As the match goes on, you find yourself moving from one bad technique to another bad technique, only to fall behind. In allowing technique to dam up positive flow, you are sabotaging yourself and losing your mental equilibrium. That is why the top priority in your mind should be maintaining a stable equilibrium, not maintaining technique. When you as a player remove the barrier of technique, you will still have failures. But now you will have a more positive flow to your match play. Any failures will wash right over you, and you will find yourself instantly and positively thinking about the next point. And guess what? Technique will not prevail, YOU WILL!
