The Green Report What an up-and-down winter we have had so far. We have seen temperatures drop into the low teens and highs reach upward to the mid-sixties. We have had over six inches of rain so far this year and that doesn’t count the snowfall we have received. What does that mean for the turf? Likely nothing as all the turf remains dormant. We need a solid two weeks of temperatures to be above fifty degrees to really jump start the turf. As we push into March, I am sure Mother Nature still has a few snowstorms up her sleeve; but temperatures will start to teeter to the warmer side and the golf course will start to come alive.

FROM CHRIS HARRIMAN GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT

Our Tree Management Plan for the golf course continues to progress. The increased amounts of sunlight and air movement, especially on holes 6 and 11, will quickly pay dividends as the turf greens up this spring. Most of our work now is focused on cleaning up stump grindings and filling the holes with soil and seed or sod. With much of this work being done over the winter, it will be difficult for most people to discern exactly what has changed. The change you will notice, however, is a healthier, more consistent golf course this year.

March will be a busy time on the golf course for our cultural practices. Our plan is to core aerate the tees and approaches and topdress Our bunker renovation on the front nine is coming along great. The them with sand heavily in order to fill the holes. The fairways will be crew has been hard at work removing the old bunker sand. We are solid-tine aerated, verticut and lightly topdressed. Greens aeration taking the time to cut along the outer edge of the bunker to locate will take place on April 8 and 9 followed by sand injection on April the original edge from when the bunker was constructed. In some 10 with the Dryject process. We will be using 3/8” size coring tines places, that requires us to cut out over a foot of material. Over time, this year in hopes that the holes heal more quickly than in the past with sand build-up and washouts, these bunkers have reduced in on the greens. size, as the turf around the bunker remains actively growing. In some bunkers, we are adding better drainage to aid in the removal Once again, I would like to thank the Membership for eight great of water that enters the bunker. Once we get warmer weather, we years at Cattail. I was given the tools and freedom to really make will be installing Capillary Concrete to the bottom of the bunker. This this facility special. It is very difficult for me to leave such a caring porous liner will dramatically increase the amount of water that can and supportive Membership, as well as a crew of people that give run through the bunker without causing washouts. New sand will 100% to Cattail each and every day. I am confident that your new be installed and raked out. All this work will leave us with a more Superintendent will not just carry on my legacy but forge their own consistent bunker to play out of and a bunker that requires less filled with innovation, quality and expertise. Please extend to them input from our staff during heavy rains because of fewer washouts. the confidence and trust you instilled in me! The Free Lesson Challenge! I BET WE HAVE YOUR ATTENTION, HUH? Good! As teaching professionals, there is one aspect of practicing that we believe sometimes gets overlooked—training. Every player works on match toughness in block time. Some people work on technique with private lessons or work on strategy in a clinic. But what about training independently with a friend? Allow me to illustrate a scenario of a common occurrence in player development. Let’s say you come in to fix your grip on your volleys. After an hour lesson, you finally feel comfortable volleying with your new continental grip, and you’re ecstatic. “I can’t wait to try this at block,” you say to yourself. So the next day at block, you miss the first couple of volleys with your new and improved grip, so you begin to revert back to your old grip. “I don’t want to blow it for my partner or waste people’s time, so I’ll just use my old grip and work on the new one later,” you say to yourself. And the remainder of the week’s blocks come and go, and then you are back at your lesson the next week working on the same things you worked on last week, and the cycle repeats. Unless you are taking multiple lessons and clinics a week, so that your instruction and technical work overrides the bad habits from block time, this pattern will continue.

Now, training on your own is admittedly more boring than match play or clinics—but the repetition is necessary. So the tennis professional staff is prepared to reward all those who follow the training regimen below. If you and a friend do all of the things listed below, you will be entered for a chance to win the following package: 1. 1 Free Semi-Private Lesson for you and your training partner together. 2. I Free Racquet Stringing for each training partner. 3. 1 Free Pack of Overgrips for each training partner. 4. 1 Free 90 minute clinic for you and your training partner. Training Regimen: 1. 100 forehands hit crosscourt past the service line (not consecutively) from deuce corner to deuce corner. 2. 100 backhands hit crosscourt past the service line (not consecutively) from ad corner to ad corner. 3. 100 volleys hit consecutively from deuce corner to deuce corner. 4. 100 volleys hit consecutively from ad corner to ad corner. That’s it! The drawing will be done at the Cattail Creek Tennis Classic, May 29-June 2. GOOD LUCK!! Chris Cozzillio, Director of Tennis chris.cozzillio@cattailcreekcc.com 410.489.4653 ext.265
