BUNKER to BUNKER Dear Members, Happy New Year! On behalf of the entire Cattail Creek Professional Staff, we would like to extend all our members a warm and welcome greeting to the 2019 golf season. We hope everyone has enjoyed spending the holidays with family and friends. We had a very exciting golf season in 2018, and we are all looking forward to an even better one in 2019. Hopefully mother nature cooperates a little better this year!
The Professional Staff and Golf Committee has done extensive planning for the upcoming golf season and the finalized Golf Calendar will be featured in this month’s newsletter. We did adjust the dates on a few tournaments this year, like the Hialeah and Men’s Cattail Cup, so please check all the dates carefully. This is always an exciting time, so be sure to mark your calendar for all these great tournaments!
With spring and warmer weather on the horizon, we will have some familiar faces returning to the golf operation. Our Director of Instruction, Ricky Serrano, and Brian Anderson, who has been promoted to the 1st Assistant Golf Professional will be retuning. We are still in the process of rounding out the rest of the Professional Staff, and we are looking to fill these spots very soon. I am very fortunate to have such a talented team of PGA Professionals and we all look forward to delivering you an exceptional golf experience.
Also, we will be hosting a new product event for TaylorMade featuring the new M5 & M6 on February 23rd in the Learning Center. Some other highlights for the upcoming spring will be our Men’s “Winter Thaw” Kickoff March 15th, which also coincides with the first day handicaps become active. April 2nd we will be hosting the CCWGA Spring Fling followed by the “Masters Par 3” Contest on April 3rd. We hope you can join us for these awesome events!
As many of you have heard, the rules of golf will undergo major changes in 2019. The USGA and R&A have worked together over the last few years to provide a major overhaul to the current rules. Both governing bodies have made a concerted effort to make the rules easier to understand and help speed up the pace of play. The Professional Staff will be sending out information over the next few months regarding these important changes. We are happy to announce that fan favorite Jerry Duffy will be hosting a 2019 USGA Rules Seminar at the Club on Wednesday, February 13th. You can sign up now through the club website under the Golf Events portion, or through the Club Calendar. This is a fantastic way to be introduced to the new rules and have a refresher on the ones that didn’t change.
Thank you for all the support of the golf operation and we look forward to providing you a memorable golf experience in 2019! Warm Regards, Daniel Bengtson, PGA Head Golf Professional

The Green Report
FROM CHRIS HARRIMAN GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT
February is here already and we have been riding the wave of odd winter weather. We have seen temperatures go from 0-60 in just a few days. A good freeze however allows the turf to harden off and any overwintering turf disease should be well decimated. With the ongoing work on the Tree Management Plan, we enjoy when the ground is frozen as it allows us to venture further off the cartpath. We have made major headway in respect to improving the Course with our Tree Mangement Plan. Our work has been concentrated in two main areas so far, around #6 and #11. In general we have moved the tree lines back in order to bring sunlight on to the turf earlier and keep it exposed later in the day. Trees that were restricting air movement to the turf have been thinned. Better air movement and more sunlight means a higher quality of turfgrass will be produced. The staff has been working extremely hard so far this winter and production has been high. We plan to continue working around the course to improve growing environments through the end of March. In addition to the tree work we are also planning to begin renovating the front nine greenside bunkers. Of course, we cannot start to remove old sand until it thaws out so it is waiting game with Mother Nature until then. Once the sand thaws, we will jump right into the renovation. The old sand is removed and the bunker is edged back to its original edge. The bottom of the bunker is built up so that the floor is a consistent 6 inches deep. Then we work to install our drainage system. Exactly what we did to the right of 3 green last year, we will be doing to all the bunkers we renovate. Capillary concrete is placed at a 2 inch depth in the bunker and then new sand in installed on top. The capillary concrete combined with the new sand allows water to drain very quickly through the bunker, eliminating any concerns of washouts during heavy rain and producing a very consistent playing experience. Again, the weather will dictate how far we get on this project in the spring but we plan on working on the bunkers through most of April. Sometimes we need to be forced inside in the winter as there are many things to be tended to. All the tee markers, cups, flagsticks, bunker rakes, water coolers, hazard stakes, machinery and maintenance facility itself have to be cleaned, washed, striped, sanded, scraped, pressure washed, painted, waxed, polished, clear coated and put back together. We don’t like being inside but when Mother Nature tells us to stay in, we have plenty to do. Don’t forget to keep up with the Green Department Blog to stay abreast of happenings around the Course and think spring!
