The Green Report Having wrapped up my first month here at Cattail Creek Country Club, it is clear the Course is on a positive trajectory going into the season. During the month of April, the team completed a large amount of project work, including a successful aerification on greens and fairways, as well as many winter project tasks that still required final steps. This included sod installation on Holes #4, #7 and #11 and stump hole cleanup and backfilling. As we continue the season into May, spring project work will include drainage solutions to address the collection of ground water running out of the hill from Hole #14 tee into Hole #13, and installation of annual flowers. The department’s major focus, however, will be on the Course health and bringing detail and consistency to the playing conditions. This includes our strategy to address the presence of Poa annua and the root cause of why we are seeing so much of it on our playing surfaces. A quick background on Poa annua - Poa annua is a prolific seed producer, producing upward of 350 seeds per plant per year, and these seeds remain viable for up to 15 years in the soil. Because bentgrass provides conditions that are ideal for Poa annua
FROM KIRK WARBURTON GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT
(moisture, nitrogen and traffic), it often thrives on these sites. It is also an incredibly invasive plant and will seek to fill in any bare areas. Unfortunately, with large areas in the rough where turf died last year- the Poa annua was given a platform to move in. That result shows itself when the Poa annua moves into its seed head stage, i.e., the months of April and May. I have full confidence in our Tall Fescue/Kentucky Bluegrass sod long-term strategy and will continue to update throughout the process. Lastly, our Green Department Blog is a great place to read posts from either myself or our Assistant Superintendent, Matt Harvey. I welcome any feedback on your experience, or if there are questions on the Course, please reach out and let me know. Looking forward to great golfing days ahead.

STAY INJURY FREE THIS USTA SEASON! This is the time of the year where injuries pop up the most. We are playing an extensive USTA schedule in addition to lessons, clinics, etc. Plus, we want to soak in every bit of sunshine, so we are unlikely to turn down tennis when it is available to us! 1. The Racquet: For most club players, I do not recommend a racquet much higher than 11.0 ounces. On the flip side, I also do not recommend a racquet below 10 ounces. There are obviously exceptions to the rule, but most club players should be in this sweet spot. Having a racquet that is too heavy or too light can cause elbow problems, so try to be in between this sweet spot. You also want to make sure you have the appropriate grip size. Too big or too small of a grip can cause tennis elbow issues as well. 2. The String: Unless told otherwise, I string most racquets with a hybrid string, with the polyester material on the mains, and the synthetic gut material on the crosses. The polyester material grants more power and control, but also can be a little harsher on the elbow. The synthetic gut is comfortable for the arm, but will not produce the same “on-court” benefits. In EXTREME cases of tennis elbow, I will recommend Natural Gut. Natural Gut is by far the easiest on the arm, but also breaks quickly and is roughly triple the cost of any other polyester or synthetic gut string. 3. Stretch: Stretching takes time—a good 15 minutes before and after we play. With busy schedules, taking time to stretch when we can barely get our tennis in the amount of time we have blocked off can be really difficult. However, we all have to make the time. Even stretching in the morning when you wake up, or before you go to bed is extremely beneficial. 4. Rest: This one is the hardest for us all to practice. Sometimes—the best way to fend off an injury—is rest. Listen to your body—if your body says it doesn’t want to hit the tennis ball, or run, etc.—Listen to it. Sometimes rest beats playing injured— you could end up injuring yourself even worse, and then you could be forced to sit out even longer than you would have if you had rested for a couple of weeks! Here is hoping for a 2019 filled with numerous wins and no injuries! Good luck and see you on the courts! Chris Cozzillio, Director of Tennis
