Cat Tales April
Lunch – Cattail Room (Private Member Event)
April is officially here and we are gearing up for another great season at Cattail! Perhaps you’ve spotted some of the excitement too: •Pickleball is coming to Cattail! The team is underway building our brand new Pickleball court located towards the rear side of the pool area. Pickleball is a hybrid sport of table tennis, badminton, and tennis. The Sports & Fitness Industry Association reported Pickleball currently has 2.8 Million players in the US which is an increase of 12% over last year. Look for this awesome club amenity starting mid-May! •Small Plates are here! Chef Tom Caswell launched a new small plates menu in late march. With the addition of local and unique ingredients combined with Cattail’s culinary expertise, this menu features a variety of mouthwatering snacks such as Bang Bang Shrimp Tacos, Asian Chicken Drumsticks, and Chesapeake Deviled Eggs. •Cattail recently hosted a Sold out Easter brunch which boasted new food displays, cocktails, and kid friendly offerings. The Food and Beverage team is planning to take it up another notch just for Mom at our Mother’s Day Brunch and Dinner on May 13th. •Golf Course Superintendent Chris Harriman and his team recently added a brand-new driving range mat to the practice area, bordered by beautiful stonework. Not only is the area more attractive, it offers Members a more consistent and comfortable hitting surface. •Complementing our new driving range mat with a high-tech enhancement, Head Golf Professional Daniel Bengtson and his team brought in a TrackMan 4 system. The TrackMan 4 uses dual radar technology to capture unique data like club path, face angle, swing direction, spin loft, and launch angle. It is an impressive analysis and training tool to enhance Members’ golf capabilities. Summer will be here soon, so don’t forget that Cattail offers Junior Golf and Tennis camps as well as summer day camps provided by KE Camps.

It is no secret that Cattail Creek is one of the most family friendly country clubs in the area. With our kid friendly family nights each month, the addition of the Crocs swim team, and our Fall Festival with pumpkin carving and a kid’s only costume contest, it isn’t a surprise that we have more and more families with young children joining the Club. With our increasingly popular Anniversary Party, on Saturday, June 23, fast approaching, we can ensure our Members that the “kids area” is going to be bigger and better this year in order to celebrate 25 family friendly years as Cattail Creek Country Club! In addition to offering social events for the kiddos, Cattail also runs a variety of camps. From the traditional golf, tennis, and all sports camp, to the new KE camps – there is something for every child here at

What is your favorite family friendly Cattail event? The Annual Anniversary Party & Fireworks is our Magden family favorite. We cannot wait for the 25th Anniversary on June 23rd! Did Cattail’s family friendly atmosphere influence your choice to become Members? Yes it did. My husband, Aaron and I knew we wanted a country club within close proximity to our home with a fun, welcoming atmosphere where we could take our daughters for social events, activities, lessons, or to just grab a quick dinner as a family. Additionally, we were drawn to Cattail because of its swim team, the Cattail Creek Crocs. The Crocs have been absolutely wonderful for our two young daughters who look forward to the swim team each summer where they have created friendships that will last a lifetime. THE GREEN REPORT CHRIS HARRIMAN [GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT]
It has been a slow start to the 2018 agronomic season. As I look back through the old newsletters and blog posts, each start to the year has been totally different. The snow storm on March 22nd dropped 7 inches of snow which was the second most amount of snow accumulated for late March ever. In fact, if it weren’t for 3 inches on March 25th, 2013 we would have to go all the way back to March of 2003 to see a snow blanketed Golf Course in late March. On the positive side, we really needed the moisture, so thanks to the snow, the turf is going to start greening up quickly! The late snow fall actually has nothing to do with our late timing for greens aeration this year. The greens and approaches are slated to be aerated with half inch tines on April 9th and 10th. Both surfaces will also be injected with sand via the Dryject procedure. Once complete, we will not be aerating the greens again with large tines until next spring. Our spring order of events on the greens has paid huge dividends over the past few years. The sand channels created lay the literal groundwork for root growth and water infiltration which directly equates to a strong level of health for our bentgrass. We are currently working our way through tee and fairway aeration. The tees are heavily topdressed behind the aeration but this year we are going with a lighter sand topdressing on the fairways in the spring. The sand topdressing helps water infiltrate the surface, protects the plant from mower, cart and golfer traffic and helps firm up the surface. Most importantly, the sand fills up aerification holes so that air and water can reach the roots of the turf thus promoting a deep healthy root system. As the creeping bentgrass grows over the aerification holes, roots drive through the sand channels. Over the next few weeks our playing surfaces will be healed and playing beautifully. With the warmer temperatures we know more activity

will pick up on the golf course. We would like to remind all golfers to be aware of and fix their own ball marks on the greens. Here is a refresher on the cart rules that were installed last summer: •
Keep your cart on the path as much as possible. When possible enter the fairway at a 90 degree angle heading towards your ball position.
•
Cart traffic should be scattered through fresh turf areas and rarely concentrated into a single path. This includes pinch points on fairways as well as entry and exit points from the cart path.
•
Carts are allowed to travel in the rough and on the fairways, scattering their traffic about. Steep mounds and tall grassed naturalized areas must be avoided.
•
Carts should never travel on the closely mown approaches and never between the green and a greenside bunker. Carts should remain on the path around the green.
•
Par 3’s, and holes 5 and 6 will remain cart path only except for handicap flag bearers.
Simply put, scatter your cart traffic. Stay out of the naturalized areas and keep your cart in a safe position. These simple rules will help keep the Course consistent and beautiful. Keep up with the Green Department Blog for updates on everything from aeration recovery to when the 12th tees will be open for play. We are looking forward to another great season!
BUNKER to BUNKER Dear Cattail Creek Members,
Women’s Opening Day
The always welcomed arrival of Spring brought us a staggering 7 inches of snow, and a winter wonderland on the course. I am sure I speak for all when I say, bring on the warm weather and golf!!! We were fortunate to have a few bonus days in March to knock off the rust and get rid of some of that cabin fever. As we turn the calendar to April; the Professional Shop will return to normal operating hours. The Professional Shop will be open Tuesday-Sunday and tee times will begin at 9:00 a.m. The weekend lottery has returned and be sure to get your request in by Thursday at 5:00 pm. We have many fun events planned for the 2018 golf season and please allow me to highlight a few to begin the year.
Please join us for the Women’s Opening Day on Tuesday April 17th at 10:00 a.m. The format of the tournament will be a scramble with foursomes being selected at random. This is great way to kick the year off and enjoy some great comradery with your fellow members.
CCWGA Spring Fling Whether you are a longtime CCWGA Member, or hope to take up golf for the first time this year, we encourage you to attend our annual “Spring Fling” Cocktail Party on Tuesday, April 3rd at 6:00 p.m. The CCWGA Ladies skill levels and ages span the spectrum, so there is room for everyone to participate. Please enjoy complimentary appetizers and desserts while mingling with other CCWGA members and Golf Professional Staff. This is a great way to start off the 2018 golf season! “The Masters” Week at Cattail Most golfers always look forward to the first week of April as the unofficial start to the golf season. Also, this week always brings to light one of the most time-honored traditions with the “Masters”. New for Cattail this year, we will not only coincide our Par 3 Contest, but we are adding our Men’s Opening Day to Masters week. We will host our Par 3 Contest on Thursday, April 5th at 4:00 p.m. and Men’s Opening Day will be held on Saturday, April 21st. Baring Mother Nature, we will plan to tee off at 9:30 a.m. so we can finish in time for everyone to catch the afternoon tv coverage of the Masters. This will be an exciting week for all!
Junior Sports Activity Kick-Off Party This free event will be held on Sunday, April 29th and has been combined to include all junior sports activities at Cattail Creek. This will be the one stop shop to register your kids for golf, tennis and swim activities. This is always a fun day and please see the following for some details: • Open to all Membership types • Juniors may invite one non-member “buddy” • There will be games and contests, featuring the “Golfzilla” inflatable target, Snag Golf, Kwik Golf and more! • Register and learn information about junior day camps, afternoon clinics, Junior Golf Academy, tournaments and PGA Junior League 2018 is shaping up be a very exciting season at Cattail Creek, and the Professional Staff will strive to deliver a fun and energetic golfing experience for all. When attempting to prepare for a marathon, or trying to lose weight, lifting weights to get ripped for beach season one cannot simply just go onto the track or gym and “wing it.” Any fitness coach or personal trainer will tell you that to achieve your goals you need to have a specific plan or program to stick to. This same philosophy applies to your tennis game as well. Each group and private lesson that I run I have a game plan for what needs to be focused on. For groups it is slightly looser than it would be for a college practice or pro training routine as the same participants are not always in attendance. For example, with some groups focus on overall net play is needed. With

newfound skills in a match and looking back thinking “wow, a month ago I would have never even TRIED that shot!” We have discussed in previous articles how to use your off season to learn new skills or add new strategies to your game. One thing that every player could use though is how to practice these skills on their own. Many players that I coach are getting better at attempting their new shots and strategies in their matches or block times. This is critical to honing new skills, but many players still do not practice these skills. In fairness, these people may want to practice these skills but do not know where to start. Below I will lay out a few different practice scenarios complete with how much time to do each exercise. You can play around with these set ups as well—the main goal here is to isolate what you are working on and get as much volume of this shot as possible. Good luck!
