The Many Uses for Assigned Lockers LYNN SLUPSKI [MEMBERSHIP/MARKETING DIRECTOR]

If you thought the lockers in the men’s and women’s locker rooms, located in the main Clubhouse, only benefit avid golfers, you would be mistaken! There are endless ways to utilize an assigned locker to suit your needs. Retrieve your freshly re-strung or re-gripped racquet hassle-free at your convenience. Have your Golf Shop & Tennis/Fitness Pro Shop special order placed in your locker upon their arrival. Having a cardigan within reach is paramount if the Veranda or Restaurant are a little chilly. Plus golf is sweaty; everyone needs an extra polo handy. Just got to the pool and realized your sunglasses are at home? Good thing you keep an extra pair in your locker!

Keep the clutter out of your car; store an extra pair of golf/tennis shoes and socks, in case an opportunity to play arises when you’re already at the Club.

After taking advantage of shoe shine, you’ll know right where to find your boots and dress shoes when it’s time to retrieve them.

Store a change of clothes for your child; you never know when that cup of chocolate milk will topple into a lap at dinner.

Interested? $135/year Choose a locker of your liking that doesn’t already have a personalized nameplate and contact Sarah Barton, Membership Assistant – sarah.b@cattailcreekcc.com. We’ll prepare your nameplate and key!

GREEN REPORT With the warmer temperatures we know more activity will pick up on the golf course. We would like to remind all golfers to be aware of, and fix, their own ball marks on the greens. For 2015, carts will only be restricted to the paths on #4, #5 and #6 along with the par 3 holes. Cart access rules are posted on the card in the roof of your cart. Cart traffic should be concentrated in the fairways and not in the rough or on the mounds. All carts should gently start to exit the fairways at or before the black and white recycled plastic posts that we place in the fairways. Most importantly, scatter your traffic to a fresh area; do not follow exactly where someone else has been. These simple rules will help keep the Course consistent It has been a slow start to the golf season this year thanks to the cold weather and

BUNKER to BUNKER BOB WAMPLER [HEAD GOLF PROFESSIONAL]

Finally, spring has arrived! Chris Harriman and his team are working diligently to get our golf course in fantastic condition for the 2015 season. I would like to begin by applauding our Golf Professional Staff, Management Team and Golf Committee this year for their hard work in scheduling and programming our events. We have an exciting year ahead of us. With the golf season quickly approaching, here are my ‘Top 5’ reminders when coming out to play a round of golf or use the practice facilities. Adhering to these guidelines will help us to provide all of our Members with a fantastic experience. 1. Play without Delay – An 18-hole round of golf at Cattail Creek must be completed in 4 hours 15 minutes or less, without exception. A Pace of Play subcommittee helps monitor and enforce this policy. 2. Dress for Success – Please ensure that you and your guests adhere to our dress code policy. Cargo shorts are not permitted on the golf course or practice facilities at any time. Golf shirts must be tucked in and remain tucked in and hats must always be in the forward facing position. Your Professional Shop is fully stocked with a great selection of appare - the first step to playing better golf is to look the part! 3. Make a Starting Time – Booking a starting time in advance is very much appreciated and helps the Golf Staff to be prepared and provide you with the best possible customer service. If you are bringing guests with you, please

CAT TALES 2015

12

inform us of your guests’ first and last name(s) so we can make a guest bag tag for each. 4. Care for our Course – Please make a conscious effort to leave the golf course in better condition than you found it. Two easy ways to do this are by observing the cart restrictions found in the golf carts and by repairing one additional ball mark on every green. If all of our Members take this advice to heart, we will continue to enjoy outstanding conditions on an every day basis. 5. Post your Scores – To ensure fair and equitable competitions, all Golf Members are required to maintain a correct and current handicap in order to be eligible to play in Club tournaments. After each round, golfers are required to post their adjusted score on the Golfnet website. Additionally, there is a ‘Golfnet’ mobile app, which allows you to post scores anytime, anywhere. The Golf Staff is always happy to assist with the posting of scores or with any handicap related questions you may have. We look forward to seeing all of you out on the golf course soon! Everything for Golf,

GOLF SH P NEWS LAUren Burns

[golf shop merchandiser]

With spring here, the Golf Pro Shop is being restocked with all the new spring clothing lines. These items always brighten up the space and bring a sense of excitement to the Shop. Below are just a few of the many new accessories that are currently available in the Golf Professional Shop in addition to new clothes. Oakley has never had a ‘golf specific’ lens, until the Oakley Prizm Golf Lens. They had lenses that were compatible with golfing, but never customized for golf. The G30 Iridium lenses are popular for golf, but are designed more for sunny days not cloudy days. The VR28 Iridium Polarized lenses were also popular to golf with, but some had trouble reading greens correctly with them because of the polarization. The Prizm lenses use contrast to maximize colors and enhance visibility. This is the first time Oakley has used this technology for golf, as Prizm technology is already popular in skiing, baseball, driving, and hiking. They are going to give you a brighter view than both the G30 and VR28. Based on the reviews so far, they look like a home run. We currently have both replacement lens and sunglasses with the Prizm technology in stock. Thymes products have always sold well in the Golf Pro Shop, but their candles have been a Club favorite. In addition to our stock collections; Aqua Coralline (Fresh), Jade Matcha (Fresh), and Tiare Monoi (Floral), we have Kimono Rose (Floral) and Tupelo Lemongrass (Citrus). All of the candles have a burn time of 60 hours. I use the samples in the Shop, and as long as you are good about cutting down the wick before lighting it again, you will certainly get

that 60 hours out of each Oakley Prizm Golf candle. The scents are not Lens; available in the overwhelming, but just Pro Shop! enough that you notice and appreciate it. Also, all of their lids double as a base, enhancing the décor along with the ambiance. One of my personal favorite new additions are the FootJoy ‘First Joys,’ which are little baby shoes. They are available in blue/white, pink/white, and all white with green text. They fit infants from 6-9 months. We currently have all three color options in stock. If you do not currently have a baby or grandchild on the way, you can always use them as a headcover for a blade putter! We are looking forward to seeing Members out on the Course enjoying the warmer weather, and coming to see us in the Pro Shop!

Sunday, April 26 | 2:00 p.m. on the Driving Range Following ‘junior sports info day!’ We are so excited about this new junior event for 2015. The entire staff will be in attendance coordinating contests, answering questions, and sizing juniors for new clubs. Lauren will be in the Golf Shop ready to place orders for new golf outfits from her favorite brands, like Garb, Under Armour, and Adidas. In addition to clothing, we also have a great selection of junior footwear from Adidas, FootJoy, and Puma. Back on the range, we have a great afternoon of games and activities planned: • Fun Games and Contests including a “Golfzilla”, SNAG Golf, and Kwik Golf • Learn about Cattail’s U.S. kids ‘Family Tees’ on the Course and how to ‘Tee it Forward’ • We will be offering a Junior Golf Equipment Exchange at the event. Leading up to Sunday, April 26, Members who have junior golf equipment that is still in good condition, can consider donating to the Equipment Exchange and helping another aspiring junior golfer. Bring any junior equipment that your child has grown out of to the Golf Shop to ‘pay it forward!’ • The Golf Staff will provide complimentary evaluations for junior golfers in need of a first or new set of clubs via the equipment exchange or by ordering a new professionally fit set of clubs.

ALEX JUSTINIANI [DIRECTOR OF TENNIS]

at Cattail Creek

When I think back on my own tennis camp experience, I recall the excitement leading up to that week. It was always a big deal when the camp leaders who were from Tennis Australia, would be visiting our club in Mexico and would make our lives a little more fun during the summer. Those camps are where I learned a lot of what I still love about the game now… Experiences like that summer brought about a remarkable transformation in my life. Over time, tennis became my passion and my profession. I encourage our Members to have their kids attend a tennis camp at some point during the summer. When your child attends our summer camp, they will learn to work well with others, build meaningful relationships and learn the basic foundation skills of tennis, all while having a blast. Your child will learn the correct tennis technique on forehands, backhands, volleys, overheads and serves. They will also be taught how to correctly keep score and apply tennis etiquette. But a big part of our focus is how to have fun on the court!

This week of camp combines basic fundamental instruction for both golf and tennis. Morning golf instruction encompassing all the essential topics is followed by a lunch break. Juniors enjoy an afternoon of tennis instruction, and then the day concludes at the Pool. Monday is tennisonly.

What to expect when you are

REGRIPPING!

Bobby COZZILLIO [ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF

It is that time of year again, the snow is melting and the spring tennis season is almost here. At this time, players start to consider what they can do to prepare for the impending season, from taking lessons to purchasing new equipment. Often times players have the latest shoes, or newest racquet, but overlook arguably the most important part of their racquet— the strings. When considering how to have your racquet restrung, there are a few questions a player should ask themselves: “Am I looking for more control, spin or power?” “Do I break strings frequently?” “Do I have elbow or shoulder pain?”

Here is a list of common string types that can help bring your game to the next level: Natural Gut: Natural gut is the most expensive of all string types, but for good reason. Natural gut is considered to be the softest, and best feeling string

side strings) with a more comfortable natural or synthetic gut.

Synthetic Gut: Synthetic gut is a much less expensive string type, and still offers similar comfort to the natural gut. Players typically opt for a synthetic gut due to the increased durability and more expansive variety it offers. Synthetic guts come in a wide range of colors, textures, and gauges. Each texture (rough or smooth) and gauge (thick or thin) provides the player a different feel or amount of spin they can generate on their shots.

Not only is the type of string used a critical decision to how well your racquet plays, but tension also needs to be considered. The same racquet strung at different tensions can play totally different. The tighter your racquet is strung, the more control the player will have. Likewise, the looser your racquet is strung the more power and spin your racquet will offer.

Polyester: Polyester strings (or if you want to sound like you are in the ‘know,’ Poly) are a great option for players who break strings. Poly strings tend to be stiffer and offer ample amounts of spin and power. The stiffness of this string can be abrasive or harsh on a player’s elbow. It is recommended that if you string your racquet with a poly’ to drop your racquet tension considerably. Hybrid: Hybrid string jobs are for players looking for the playability of a synthetic gut, but the durability of a poly. Your racquet technician will string the main strings (up and down strings)

It is important to note that when your racquet is restrung it may feel different than what you are used to. Some players will find that their strings may “move around” more or sound different. This is not uncommon when a racquet is freshly strung. There are countless varieties and combinations to consider when having your racquet restrung. It may take some trial and error to find the string that is a perfect fit for you! Your CattailTennis Professionals are available to re-grip your racquets with the right strings for you!

Warm-Up, Study Up!

CHRIS COZZILLIO [HEAD TENNIS PROFESSIONAL]

The warm weather is finally coming, the courts will be open soon, and I know we are all excited for the USTA season! All the lessons, clinics, and block times over the winter have prepared you for the upcoming season. Additionally, there are a few tricks we can use to even further prepare ourselves right before the match begins. In between the time we walk on the court and the time we spin to determine who serves first, there is the standard five minute warm-up. We usually use the warming up period to get our muscles loose, practice our shots, and gauge how well we are hitting that day. However, we need to also be using this time to study our opponent. First, we need to see which hand is their dominant hand. You would be surprised how many people play a whole match and will not notice that their opponent was left handed. This can make a huge difference in terms of aiming towards their weaker side, avoiding their strength, and the angle they can

hit the serve. Next, we have to try and see which side is their stronger side, forehand or backhand. Many people will favor the forehand, but every so often you will see a more lethal backhand than forehand. Also, when your opponent is serving, take notice to how often they hit to each spot in the box, what kind of spin they put on the serve, and how much pace they hit. If we can feel out their serve during the warm-up, we can return more effectively in the match, enabling us to break serve more frequently. All of these tricks can help us gain a slight advantage in a match. Every player has favorite spots, patterns, and a weakness. So use the warm-up as an opportunity to try and play detective—it can be the difference between winning and losing. Warm-up, study up!
