General Manager's Notes

SWIM TEAM REGISTRATION- LAST CHANCE

www.cattailcreekcc.com/crocs On Monday, March 10, the Club hosted its Annual Membership Meeting. This meeting is another example of how Cattail Creek is a unique club. Unlike most other country clubs, our department heads deliver reports on their respective areas that include goals that they are striving to accomplish in the upcoming year and highlights from the previous season. Their passion and dedication is unmistakable as they discuss areas so important and personal to them. As General Manager, my goal is to help create a positive and enjoyable environment for Members and staff. I want to create personal and memorable experiences for our Members through emotional engagement, with every visit to the Club. I have spent 23 of the last 25 years in the country club environment. The two years I was not at a country club were spent at the Ritz-Carlton in Philadelphia as their Director of Banquets. I strongly believe that many of the same philosophies and best practices that five-diamond establishments like the Ritz-Carlton adhere to, can be applied in a country club setting. I have listed below the Ritz-Carlton values that I consider to be just as appropriate for Cattail Creek staff to strive towards:

Junior Crocs (ages 5-6) are sold-out and waitlisted. Very few slots remain open for regular Crocs (ages 7-18).

Swim Suit Fitting Day: Sunday, April 27, 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

SAVE THE DATE: SATURDAY, JUNE 28

• I build strong relationships and create Cattail Creek Members for life. • I am always responsive to the expressed and unexpressed wishes and needs of our Members. • I continuously seek opportunities to innovate and improve the Cattail Creek experience. • I create a work environment of teamwork and lateral service so that the needs of our Members, and each other, are met. • We are ladies and gentlemen serving ladies and gentlemen. I highlighted these basics at the Annual Meeting as an example of how Cattail Creek’s mission statement can be brought to life each day. If every Cattail employee, starting with myself, applies and adheres to these beliefs, we will be successful in creating the desired Cattail Experience.

Welcome, Tyler Chaplin! Assistant Golf Professional

As mentioned in our Golf Newsdesk email, we are pleased to introduce our new Assistant Golf Professional, Tyler Chaplin. Tyler was born and raised in Oak Hill, VA. At the age of 14, he became interested in golf and after a couple of group lessons and playing only 36 holes in his life, he decided to try out for his high school golf team. In two years, Tyler went from being the coach’s project to being a key member of the team. He enrolled at Methodist University in Fayetteville, NC where he entered the PGM (Professional Golf Management) program, graduating this past December with a BA in Business Management. Tyler’s most recent internship experience was at Sunnehanna Country Club in Johnstown, PA. During his time there, Tyler planned and coordinated golf outings and tournaments, provided individual and group instruction, and handled club repair and club fittings. Tyler enjoys all aspects of improving the golf experience for club members and is very excited to join our team. Please join me in welcoming Tyler to the Cattail family!

Golf Shop News A fresh look for your golf wardrobe! LAUREN BURNS

[MERCHANDISE COORDINATOR]

We are all eagerly awaiting the warmer weather. That said, I would like to take this opportunity to first say that I was lied to, when I took this job and was told that the winters were mild! Regardless, we would love to see you in the Golf Shop no matter the weather, so you can see all of the new additions! The spring merchandise has arrived and it offers a completely new look. Nike, Loudmouth, Antas, and Garb Baby are all new brands for us this year. We have restocked Maui Jim, Brighton jewelry, Oakley sunglasses, Adidas, Polo, Peter Millar, and FootJoy pants. In the shoe department, we have new Allen Edmonds, FootJoy, Adidas, Ecco, and Ashworth. The vendors have truly outdone themselves introducing new and updated merchandise. The focus of brands this season, has been to create lifestyle pieces. The vendors recognize that many golfers are busy and do not have time to change outfits going from one activity to the next. So, you will see that almost all of the pieces, for both men and women, are acceptable for traveling from the golf course to soccer practice, the grocery store, or to a nice dinner. The look that most easily fits into this mold would is a polo, a ¼ zip, and a nice pair shorts, or a skort. Almost every brand we carry offers this versatile look.

Be a part of your child’s Cattail Creek golf experience!

[HEAD GOLF PROFESSIONAL]

The Cattail Cup will prove to be a great new addition to our tournament rotation. Although this is primarily a team event, there will be individual competitions as well. The number of teams, and the number of players within each team, will be determined by the total registrants for the event. Pairings Party – Friday, May 30 Team captains (selected by the Golf Committee) will draft players who have been ranked A-B-C-D based on their current handicaps. Once the teams are selected, the pairings for the first round of play will be chosen by the respective team captains. Saturday, May 31 Four ball and singles match play and also a two-person scramble. Sunday, June 1 Chapman and another go at four ball and singles match play. The Golf Professional Staff modelling the spring 2014 clothing collection!

The overall team champion will be the team with the highest total of accumulated points earned after all four formats. The overall individual champion (MVP) will be the individual with the highest total of accumulated points after the formats. The Cattail Cup is definitely slated to be one of the big golf events of 2014!

GREEN REPORT CHRIS HARRIMAN

[GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT]

We’ve had a slow start to the golf season this year thanks to the cold temperatures and lack of sun. We are seeing temperatures well-below normal, and the soil has continued to freeze, and thaw, all the way through the end of March. That said, soil temperatures have nowhere to go but up, and the turf will be blasting off before you know it. Spring aeration is coming along and only a few fairways remain to solid tine aerate, verticut, and topdress with sand. We are moving along well with our new sand injection verticutter on the tees and approached. This spring, we will be using over 320 tons of sand on our greens, tees, and fairways. The sand topdressing helps water infiltrate the surface, protects the plant from mower, cart, and golfer traffic, and helps firm up the surface. Most importantly, the sand fills aerification holes so that air and water can reach the roots of the turf, thus promoting a deep healthy root system. As the creeping bentgrass grows over the aerification holes, roots drive through the sand channels. Over the few weeks our playing surfaces will be healed and playing beautifully. As soil temperatures rise, our tall fescue seedlings will also begin to wake up. These areas that we intensively seeded last fall, will again be supplemented with the appropriate nutrients and pushed to fill in. The compost that was applied to these areas late last fall has already helped warm the soil, which has resulted in an early green-up. We are excited again to watch our tall fescue seedlings thrive through the summer and then implement more ryegrass to turf type tall fescue transition areas. With the warmer temperatures, we know more activity will pick up on the Golf Course. We would like to remind all golfers to please

be aware of, and fix, your own ball marks on the greens. The cart rules will remain the same as last year; no cart traffic is allowed on #4, #5, #6 and #12 fairways, along with the par 3 holes. Cart access rules are posted on the card in the roof of your cart. Cart traffic should be concentrated in the fairways and not in the rough or on the mounds. All carts should gently start to exit the fairways at, or before, the new black and white recycled plastic posts that we have placed in the fairways. Most importantly, scatter your traffic to a fresh area; do not follow the exact path where someone else has been. These simple rules will help keep the Course consistent and beautiful. Keep up with the Green Department Blog for updates on everything from how fast the grass is growing, to cultural practices, and progress on the #12 green grow-in. Make sure to check out the new plan for the proposed Short Game Area and changes to #10 as well. We are looking forward to a great 2014 season!

Please make your calendars and register to attend one of our three Town Hall Meetings regarding the proposed Short Game Area:

How to Stop the Lob Chris Cozzillio [Head Tennis Professional]

There is one thing that discourages many tennis players from approaching to the net - the lob. We all know there is nothing more deflating and frustrating than watching a perfect lob go over our heads for a winner, time and time again. However, there are measures we can take to make this dreaded shot less of an issue. The following lend insight as to how to prevent a good lob, and how to deal with a good lob: Prevention HIT A GOOD APPROACH SHOT: The better the approach shot, the less likely the person will be able to hit a lob good enough to win the point. The more we can get our opponent on the defensive, the harder it will be for them to come up with an incredible lob.

DEVELOP A LETHAL OVERHEAD: If we can hit a couple of winning overheads on the first few lob attempts by our opponent, they will be less likely to keep trying. Nothing is more discouraging to a lobber than getting it dismissed by a great overhead.

WATCH YOUR OPPONENT: It is very difficult to completely mask a lob. Your opponent will give you a hint that they are lobbing by the way they set up for the shot. If they lean backwards or slightly open their racquet face, they might be going with the lob. If we pay attention to these cues, we can start backing up earlier, thus preventing how effective their lob can be. Dealing THE VOLLEY SWITCH: The volley switch is how to deal with the lob in doubles. If we are not able to hit a good overhead, the next best

option is to have our partner switch over and cover the lob. Ideally, we do not want to give up our aggressive positioning at the net, so we want to try and take this shot out of the air. For example, if I am the one getting lobbed, I would shuffle to my partner’s side. They would simultaneously switch to my side and take the lob out of the air with a volley. This way we have prevented the lob, but have not given up our positioning at the net.

THE BOUNCING SWITCH: The bouncing switch is also a way to deal with the lob in doubles. This is the lob defense of which we are most familiar. The lob goes over our head, and we need to run back and try and catch up with it before it hits the back fence. This always seems like a daunting task, but if we switch correctly and efficiently, we may feel more at ease. To cover a lob that goes over our heads, we should shuffle over to our partner’s side, and our partner should run to hit the lob. Our partner has a better angle, and is therefore more likely to hit a quality shot on the lob that goes over our head.

There is no doubt that a frequent lobber can be extremely frustrating to play, but if we are successful in achieving the steps above, we should be able to send lobbers packing
