CAT TALES
 August 2012
Manager’s Desk Dear Member, Summer is winding down, and what a season it has been! We have had many challenges to overcome in the past few weeks. Fortunately, we were still able to host our Anniversary Party (a day later than we expected), after the power outages. It is not often that we plan a party for 1,200 Members/Guests and have to move the event on such short notice. We are thankful that the Anniversary Party was still a great success, and we have started planning next year’s 20th Anniversary Party. More information will come in the months ahead. As many Members gear up for vacation this month, the staff is preparing for their special day at Cattail. On August 13th, the Club hosts our Employee Appreciation Party. For those new Members who may not be familiar with this event, the employees of the Club are allowed to spend a day at the Club as guests and the membership works the event. It is a role reversal day, as the staff becomes Members and the membership provides an enjoyable event for the staff. The day’s activities include lunch, an afternoon at the pool, an 11-hole golf tournament, dinner, and an awards ceremony. Tim Smith, Member, will again chair the event, and you can sign up online to volunteer a block of your time to help out. Regardless of the amount of time you can contribute, everyone is encouraged to be part of this very special day for our staff. Many of our staff commented to me, after this event last year, how lucky they are to work at Cattail Creek. The Club’s Swim Team just wrapped up another successful season. Our Coach, Karen Heinz and Swim Team Chair, Lisa Noss, have done an outstanding job.The swim meets were very well attended, the program was fully subscribed, and the instructional offering was well received. Please join me in thanking both Karen and Lisa as everyone looks forward to next season. Keep up the outstanding work and Go Crocs! From a membership standpoint, the Club is doing very well. Year-todate, we have welcomed 44 new Golfing Members and 37 new Social Members. This is substantially more than management budgeted (as we always take a conservative approach with our projections). The longterm positive effects of having a larger membership base are tenfold. The Club’s revenue has increased across the board, and our expenses have only ticked up in the areas that have a direct effect of more sales (Restaurant & Pro Shop merchandise). While this is exceptional news, our job is not done. Lynn Slupski, Membership Marketing Director, has been very busy, and she has delivered record-breaking results. Lynn still wants to close more members before the fall, so please keep the Club in mind when speaking with your friends and business associates. As you review this newsletter, you will notice that the entire publication has a different look and feel. This is the work of a very talented young lady named Carey Ward. Carey joined the Membership and Marketing Team at Cattail last month as our new Communications Director. Carey is a University of Maryland graduate with a degree in Communications and Graphic Design. Her skillset will allow the Club to advertise, market and produce publications at a much higher quality, and her absolute focus on these items will allow us to deliver them to you in a very timely fashion. Carey’s desk is next to mine—please stop in and join me in welcoming her to the Club! I hope you will enjoy the month of August, and spend some quality time at the Club.
WELCOME HOME! Your club should always feel like an extension of your own home.

Guests Welcome:
[a note helping to clarify the specifics of where and when] LYNN SLUPSKI [MEMBERSHIP MARKETING DIRECTOR] We love your guests! We always tell you that the Club should feel like an extension of your home, so it makes sense that your guests should feel just as welcome at the Club as you do! With slightly different guest policies in the various areas of the Club, it can be tough to keep the details straight. The below overview should help to ensure that visits to the Club are both comfortable and enjoyable for your visiting friends and family. General • Guests should always be accompanied to the Club by the host Member. • Members should inform their guests of dress code and cell phone policies in advance. • The spouse and children of ‘Individual Golf Members’ do not carry Membership privileges and must abide by all guest rules and family guest fees. Golf • Any given person can play as the guest of a Golf Member once per 30 days. • Non-Members, and Cattail Dining and Social Members are considered ‘guests.’ • The current golf guest fee is $95 and a 50% discount is granted for ‘family guests.’ • Participation in the Club’s one-day Men’s Guest Days, or other Men’s and Women’s organized Member-Guest events and tournaments, do not count against the once per 30 days limit. • Guests are not permitted before 11:00 a.m. on Saturdays, Sundays, and Holidays. Tennis • Any given person can play as the guest of a Golf or Social Member twice per 30 days. • Non-Members and Cattail Dining Members are considered ‘guests.’ • The current tennis guest fee is $35 for 90 minutes of court time, and a 50% discount is granted for ‘family guests.’ • Guests are not permitted to participate in lessons, camps, or clinics. Restaurant/Club Functions • Accompanied guests are welcome at all times. • The cost that is advertised for special Club events applies to both Members and their guests. Pool • Accompanied guests are welcome at all times and should be registered by you at the Pool counter upon arrival. • Members should use discretion and limit the frequency of bringing local guests, as we would rather have them join the Cattail family as Members! • The current pool guest fee is $10 and a 50% discount is granted for ‘family guests.’ • Guests are not permitted to participate in Swim Team or swim lessons. 5

Immediate extended family members are eligible for the ‘family guest’ discount, and are classified as grandparents, parents, in-laws, siblings, nieces, nephews, and adult children over the age of 26. Reciprocal charging: an additional ‘guest’ tidbit you may not be aware of… If your guest belongs to another private club, they can almost always send their charges incurred at Cattail, back to their home club. Likewise, if you visit another club as a guest, you can send your charges back to your Cattail account. Always inform the manager on-duty at any given club of your intent to take advantage of reciprocal privileges at the start of the visit. •

BUNKER to BUNKER Dear Member, I hope your summer has been enjoyable and your visits to Cattail have been plentiful. Thank you to all the Members who participated in our July tournaments. Special congratulations to Colton O’Donoghue and Cheryl Guth on their performances in their respective Senior Club Championships. Cheryl had a dominating performance while Colton birdied four of his last nine holes to capture the crown. To top it all off, Cheryl backed up her victory with another dominating win in the Women’s President’s Trophy. I would also like to congratulate the B-Team on their regular season record of 5-0-1. Best of luck to Captain Howard Feldman and his squad as they enter into the playoffs!! It has been nice to see everyone taking advantage of the events here at Cattail and with a great lineup of fall events, I encourage all of you to review the Sports Book and plan on registering online for our events. Greens Report CHRIS HARRIMAN [GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT] This summer’s weather has again thrown a lot at the Golf Course. This past July was the 18th consecutive month that the monthly average temperature was above normal and the 7th consecutive month where rainfall was below normal. We are thankful though, we had minimal days of deathly temperatures as compared to last year. The peak summer temperatures, high humidity, and abundance of moisture in the soil has encouraged disease and put some serious stress on the turf. August temperatures are predicted to be above normal, but the average temperatures will start to subside along with a much less intense angle of attack from the sun. We are really looking forward to the fall, especially to start inter-seeding more turf type tall fescue into the rough. The seedlings and sod installed last fall have performed nicely this summer and will continue to fill in as the ryegrass melts out. We will also be working on a few out-of-play areas to help get the taller fine fescue more uniform and define
certain areas of the Course. Fall restoration will take place during the weeks of August 19th and 26th. The Golf Course will be closed as usual on the 20th and 27th. On the following Tuesdays and Wednesdays, only nine holes will be open. Fall restoration will involve aerifying the fairways with solid tines, and pulling cores out of the tees. The greens will be dryjected on August 27th, and weather permitting, we may pull a small core out. Overall, the Golf Course has held up well this summer. Much of that is due to limiting mechanical damage and implementing the right amount of cultural practices at the right time. Keep up with the Green Department Blog on the Club website to see these practices in action. I will see you all out on the Course!
The butterflies are enjoying their garden beside the Lower Patio!
The sixth green has greatly benefited this year from the new fan position. The cooler temperatures and increased air movement have kept this green alive.

APPROACH SHOTS Tournament Results NIC FLICKINGER [FIRST ASSISTANT] The month of July brought us hot & humid weather, nasty storms, and for many of us, no power! From a Club tournament standpoint however, it brought us no shortage of tournament champions. The Senior Club Championship was held over the first weekend in July in 100 plus degree temperatures. Also heating up was Colton O’Donoghue who made four birdies on his way to the clubhouse to claim the Men’s Senior Club Championship. In the women’s division, Cheryl Guth proved to be too much as she outlasted her competitors to successfully defend her Senior Club Championship title. If one win this year wasn’t enough,
“If one win this year wasn’t enough... Congratulations to Cheryl [Guth], and keep up those winning ways!” a week later Cheryl Guth was victorious in the Women’s President’s Trophy. Congratulations to Cheryl and keep up those winning ways! Rain, rain, and more rain was the overwhelming theme for the two days of Men’s Special. Despite the downpours, Steve Dillman and Greg Lawrence were able to overcome the weather and take the title. The Professional Staff would like to thank you for your continued support and look forward to seeing you participating in future golf events! •

TIP OF THE MONTH Christmas In July
RICKY SERRANO [DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTION] Christmas comes early for Cattail Creek and Ricky Serrano with the new acquisition of a FlightScope Golf Launch Monitor. FlightScope is one of the leading instructional analysis and club fitting applications that offers teaching professionals and their student’s exact data and innovative solutions to improve a player’s game and equipment.
Below is a list of the PGA tour averages from Driver to Pitching Wedge based on thousands of shots from driving ranges all over the world. This data was provided by Trackman which is a similar unit as FlightScope. These numbers can help you find your weaknesses and enforce your strength- compare yourself to the pros!
You Too, Can Benefit from FlightScope This month, I will be offering 30 minute sessions with FlightScope — “Gain Ten Yards or it’s Free.” The cost for a session is $50. Bring your seven iron and driver, and schedule a session by emailing Ricky at ricky. serrano@cattailcreekcc.com. Take advantage of this great technology and see what FlightScope can do for your game. •
FRIDAY, AUGUST 17 - SUNDAY, AUGUST 19 NEW FORMAT: Two Day Stroke Play Event Flights will be based on Friday’s seeding round. Friday – 18 Hole Round for Seeding (1:00 p.m. tee times) Saturday – 1st Round of Championship (Morning tee times) Sunday– 2nd Round of Championship (Morning tee times)
Cattail Creek MEN’S & WOMEN’S
Behind the PGA Numbers Notice how the PGA Tour players manage to combine a high launch angle (10-15 degrees) with a low spin rate (2-3000 rpm) to gain maximum distance with their driver. Hands down, the most important is Ball Speed. You can have all the clubhead speed in the world, but if your ball speed isn’t in proportion with your club head speed, you are wasting energy and losing yards.

No Power, No Water, No Worries! LYNN SLUPSKI [MEMBERSHIP MARKETING DIRECTOR]
The storm-of-the-year graced us with its presence late in the evening of June 29, otherwise known as ‘Anniversary Party Eve.’ It brought with it, downed trees, downed wires, and power outages that affected the Club and also many of our local neighbors. To say the timing of this fluke storm was an inconvenience, would be the understatement of the year! Both the Membership and the employees eagerly look forward to the Anniversary Event every year. Members begin to make their online reservations for the annual party as early as December, and the staff begins planning for the next year’s celebration almost immediately following the conclusion of the prior year. While the Club was fortunate to regain power within a day, and reschedule the event for Sunday, July 1, it didn’t come without challenges. Many registered Members were without power much longer than the Club; some for up to a week, (Who knew that an added benefit of private club membership was accessibility to showers and locker rooms during extended power outages!) and were unable to attend the rescheduled date. Many Members also plan their family vacations around our party and had outgoing flights on Sunday morning. Rather than realizing attendance of the approximately 1250 people who were registered for the event, actual attendance was around 975. 13

Those who were still able to make it, had a fantastic time, and as always, the fireworks were un-paralleled. Thanks goes out to the entire Cattail Creek staff that showed up with smiles on Sunday to execute the postponed event. The food, games, entertainment, and fireworks vendors were a delight to deal with and happily adjusted their schedules to accommodate the date change as well. A quick thanks to mother nature for keeping us on our toes, and now we put this year’s challenges behind us and move on to planning Cattail’s 20th Anniversary Celebration – just wait until you see what we have in store for you for the big 2-0 on Saturday, June 29, 2013! •

Staff Corner
NEW TO THE CATTAIL MANAGEMENT TEAM: This Summer, we are welcoming our new Communications Director, Carey Ward, and Food and Beverage Intern, Jennifer Turowski returns for her second season!
Carey Ward ated from the perspective that perhaps their functionality, practicality, or aesthetic could be improved upon. While Carey is not accustomed to having too much free time (she tended to over-extend herself in college), when it does happen, she spends it on artistic pursuits (if not freelancing, painting or collecting art and artsy stuff) or catching up with her very large (2) families, and friends of course. Carey has thoroughly enjoyed her first couple of weeks learning the ropes at Cattail, and is looking forward to getting to know many of the members — she is already known amongst the staff for her extra colorful wardrobe — if you see a gal in a neon ensemble, it’s probably Carey, so please go ahead and introduce yourself! carey@cattailcreekcc.com
Carey is native to the Annapolis area (where she grew up with her Mother and Stepfather) and the Towson area (where she currently lives with her Father and Stepmother). She graduated from Severn School in Severna Park, MD in 2008 and from UMD College Park this May, where she studied Communication and Graphic Design and was involved in many extracurricular activities including Sigma Kappa Sorority, the Sailing Team, and the Ski Club, as well as the Maryland student chapter of AIGA (a professional organization for graphic artists). Carey once heard someone important say, “design is the process of deliberately making something awesome,” which she has since adopted as a quick description for her work and passion, as she believes lots of things can be evalu-
Jennifer Turowski Jennifer is from Mt. Airy, Maryland, where she has lived most of her life. She graduated from Linganore High School in 2009 and is currently a senior at the University of Delaware majoring in Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management. After graduation, she intends to pursue a career in private club management. In order to achieve this goal, she is actively involved in the university’s student chapter of Club Managers’ Association of America, and has attended many CMAA Conferences. Jennifer also participates in other extracurricular activities including Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority and Bakers Dozen Club. She just recently returned from a study abroad trip in Switzerland and Italy, where she studied spa management and beverage
management. She really enjoyed the trip and hopes to be able to continue traveling the world throughout the rest of her life. In her free time, she enjoys baking and spending time with friends and family. Jennifer is happy to be back at Cattail again this summer — everyone was very welcoming last year —she is excited to meet more of the members and learn more about the club industry.
COMING IN SEPTEMBER:
How well do you know the Restaurant staff?
Each month, the new Staff Corner section will highlight employees at the Club with bios, interesting interviews, stories, and more!

USTA NEWS JULIE SEANEZ [USTA COORDINATOR] Congratulations to Erin Flavin’s 3.0 Women’s team. They advanced to the Maryland District Tournament. They had a tough draw, but also a great experience.
A WORD FROM THE PRO JOE MATTINGLY
[DIRECTOR OF TENNIS]
It is hard to believe that summer is slowly coming to an end. I would like to thank my summer staff, Tim, Mike, Christine, Abi, Abby and Julie for doing such a great job!! The summer programs were a huge success thanks to the hard work from everyone. We have a new Mixed Doubles League starting in August on Saturday nights. We have over 100 players signed up for this club league. This league is for Club Members only. If you are interested please contact Julie Seanez by email at julie.seanez@cattailcreekcc.com. The Cattail Creek Tennis Classic is right around the corner. This year, the Classic is Thursday, September 20th through Sunday, September 23rd. You can sign up online through the Cattail website. We are looking for volunteers, so if you are willing and able, please let any of the Tennis Professional Staff know.
The Combo season begins the week of August 13. This fall we will offer men’s and women’s 5.5, 6.5, 7.5, and 8.5 levels. There are a few open spots on teams, especially for the 6.5 men. Please contact Julie at julie.seanez@cattailcreekcc.com if you need assistance finding a team to play on. The season will continue through mid-October. New to Cattail this fall is our Mixed Doubles league. Though it is not USTA sanctioned, it will be run like a USTA league. We have had an overwhelming response so far and there is room for more. The Mixed Doubles League will kick off after combo begins.

QUICK TIP:
Adopting Fed-LikeThinking TIM HALTER
[HEAD TENNIS PROFESSIONAL]
This is a good time to drive home a point. In the 2012 Wimbledon Championship final, many of you saw Roger Federer engage in brilliant play against a spirited Andy Murray. Both players displayed spectacular effort, but Roger’s game was in hyper gear! But wait! Not too long ago, according to the experts, Roger was going downhill. After he lost in quarters and semifinals of major after major, most began to write him off.The experts were thinking he just cannot get by these later rounds anymore. He just does not have it! They questioned if he would ever win another grand slam, never mind regain the number one spot. Apparently Roger was thinking differently. While Roger was losing in the late rounds of the majors, he stayed in the grind with his rigorous training regimen and waited for that next moment to capitalize on. With each quarterfinal and semifinal match he put himself into position, giving himself the opportunity to succeed. His moment finally came at Wimbledon where he broke through for the victory. Tennis is like chess. You have the beginning game, the middle game and the end game. In Roger’s tournament situation, winning a few opening rounds is his beginning game. Winning the next couple of rounds is like the middle game and getting to the quarters, semifinals or finals is like the end game. You must get yourself to the end game to have a chance for a victory. All you can do is keep getting yourself to that position and the wins will come! This also has tremendous application to point play in your matches. In point play you have the beginning game, the middle game and the end game. The beginning game is your serve or return serve. The middle game is your consistent play, waiting for a good opportunity. The end game is positioning yourself for the win. If you are consistently getting to the end game with the opportunity to win the point you will break through on some of those opportunities. This is Fed-like thinking. Yet players complain about missing the final one or two shots that would have clinched the point. My question to them is always, Would you rather have lost the point in the beginning game? The middle game? Would that put you in position to get some wins? Wouldn’t you rather have reached the opportunity in the end game to grab the point? Again, Fed-like thinking. If you miss the shots in the end game, that’s fine. Fed-like thinking demands you start over and construct another point to work our way back to the end game. In Fed-like thinking, it is not about winning every time, but constantly positioning yourself for the win. In Fed-like thinking, what reigns supreme is the strategy of relentlessly positioning yourself to win a point, a game, a set, a match and ultimately a tournament. The simple genius of Federer. And that is why he is number one again!

Crocs Swim Season Wrap KAREN HEINZ
[SWIM TEAM COACH]
The Crocs finished their summer swim season with a record-breaking 145 swimmers. GO CROCS! We had several swim meets with local country clubs and several girls and boys records were broken:
Congratulations to Timmy Bonner, Will Cervosky, Jonathan Lahman, Katelyn Noss, and Lindsay Hockstra. The Crocs also gave back to the community this summer by collecting toiletries and coupons to donate to “Food on the 15th,” a charity for low income senior citizens in our area. They also took charge of the pet food donations at the “Cattail Goes To The Dogs” party. Our Junior Coaches played an integral role (Casey Banas, Lizzie Heinz, Kara Crawford, Erin Jack, Erin Cutroneo, Mary Kathleen DeLeonibus, Emily Michalski, Jonathan Lahmann, and Delaney Treacy) in helping with our Junior Crocs practices. Many thanks to all the parents who took the time to volunteer at our home and away swim meets! Swim Team takes more than just swimmers and coaches, but involvement from the club and parents as well. We’re looking forward to another exciting summer swim season next year! Swimmingly, Coach Karen Heinz
