Golf Shop News LAUREN BURNS
[MERCHANDISE COORDINATOR]
As tough as it is to think about it now, the end of summer is quickly approaching! This also means that the beginning of a new school year is just around the corner. In the Golf Professional Shop, there are many ways that we can help with your back-to-school shopping. Golf attire is a comfortable and classy way to arrive in style for the first day of school! For juniors, we have popular brands like Garb, Nike, Adidas, Puma, and Polo Ralph Lauren. Vera Bradley has a variety of lunch boxes, note pads, agendas, and iPad cases, too. Back-to-school shopping doesn’t just have to be for the kids either! Our fall orders have started to arrive, so be sure to come into the Golf Shop and be the first to take home the new merchandise! Don't forget, you can also special order many items for backto-school! Most brands are fully into the fall line now, so there is limited availability when it comes to spring and summer lines. For those going off to college, Vera Bradley has great bedding sets for dorm rooms (comes in Twin XL!) and Tica has the perfect duffels for those weekend trips back home! Just in case there is an item you are interested in from a spring or summer line, it is best to have a couple of color options ready when you order, just in case one is already out of stock. This alleviates multiple phone calls and emails for both you and me!
Best of luck this school year, and enjoy the rest of your summer!

GREEN REPORT: COURSE IMPROVEMENT NEWS! Rarely are we disappointed when July comes to an end! Although we are still in the middle of summer, we have some glimmer of hope that maybe the excessive heat and moisture is behind us for the year. Overall, the Course has stood the test of summer well. The greens, tees and fairways are still allowing rain to infiltrate down, which enables the turf to breathe and stay alive. We have managed our mowing schedules to the best of our ability, to limit mechanical damage and turf decline, in order to continue promoting a healthy golf course. As you have recently seen, the Driving Range Tee has been sodded to hybrid bermudagrass. This new turf will provide golfers with a much more consistent practice surface. The bermuda has excellent divot recovery abilities because of its aggressive growth habit! Its heat and disease tolerance is outstanding in comparison to the old ryegrass, too. Additionally, this hybrid breed of bermuda has a finer texture and will eventually be mowed at a similar height to our fairways. We are excited to have this improvement in place, which should pay dividends for years to come. CLICK TO VIEW TIME-LAPSE SLIDESHOWS OF THE PROCESS:
PHASE 1 STRIPPING PHASE 2 SODDING 16 ďż˝ CAT TALES NEWSLETTER
August will be our month to again evaluate our rough areas for improvement. Last year we saw success in sodding some greens surrounds to turf type tall fescue, as well as implementing an aggressive fescue seeding program in other areas (like the right of #7 and the right #14 fairways). As the ryegrass in our roughs continues to melt down this summer due to heat, moisture and disease stress, we will be prioritizing action areas once again. The more feedback you can provide to us, the better our prioritization will be. Tall fescue has proven itself to the be the superior rough grass, and we are looking forward to further increasing our percentage in the roughs.
Planning starts now to turn ryegrass areas like this, into fescue areas like this...
Especially in the fall season, there's always something different and exciting happening on the Golf Course. By keeping up with the Green Blog, you can guarantee that you will be in the know. Feel free to email or flag us down if you any questions. We will see you on the Course!

MENTAL ATTITUDE FIRST. TIM HALTER [HEAD TENNIS PROFESSIONAL] In tennis, whether you are a beginner, intermediate or advanced player, there is one aspect of your game that is of supreme importance. Even if you are stuck in a mechanically and technically oriented training program, having this crucial foundation will save you in the long run. The core basic skill, the solid base on which to build your entire game, is this principle: "Mental Attitude First." The mental attitude of forgetting mistakes and moving on is the core building block of your game, regardless of the level you have achieved. In the beginning stage, you attempt to forget your mistakes and move on because it sounds like the right thing to do. You are making tons of mistakes, which can be overwhelming at times. You struggle to apply this mental attitude in practice and match play. You are not sure how this mental attitude can ever affect your physical game, but you hang in there and keep playing!
By the time you reach the intermediate stage, you have developed a functional game by staying positive and consistently moving on. You recognize the power of "Mental Attitude First" to develop your physical game, but these connections are not totally clear in your mind. You have also caught a glimpse of how forgetting mistakes can help you win matches. "Hmm," you think, "maybe there is something to this Mental Attitude First concept. But wait! I still won the match with my physical game...or did I? Come to think of it, in practice I developed my physical game because I forgot my mistakes and kept plugging. I'm so confused! In the advanced level, everything becomes crystal clear. You astutely recognize that the game you have developed is a direct result of your continuing the climb toward success, despite all the setbacks. Your mental attitude is on the verge of becoming a weapon and you are more determined than ever to create and utilize that weapon. You begin to develop match play tenacity, not letting mistakes, setbacks or failures get to you. You control the situation instead of letting the situation control you. You also refuse to let mistakes and failures entice you into a backward focus. Your mental attitude is forward thinking: the next point, the next game, the next set, the next match. Looking backward to your last mistake, setback or poor mechanic begins to look silly. You cannot say to your opponent, "Excuse me? Could we replay that last point? My toes were not pointed in the correct direction to hit my optimum forehand!" No, you have now mastered playing in the here and now. Mental Attitude First takes on a whole new dynamic. At every level, your mental attitude is always first. Even if you become number one in the world, it will still be "Mental Attitude First." If your primary focus is to not make mistakes, never play poorly or learn the perfect mechanic, then you have missed the boat. You will be drowned in unrealistic expectations and frustration, and consumed with the most insignificant details of match play. Can Mental Attitude First make you a star and keep you out of this

Tennis & Fitness, too!
PICKS & TIPS from the Tennis & Fitness Pro Shop JOHN FOELBER [FITNESS DIRECTOR]
&
CELIA DAHAN
[FITNESS DIRECTOR]
We hope everyone has been enjoying their summer vacations! The Tennis and Fitness Pro Shop has been open now for 3 months, and we’ve had many visitors, and a lot of positive feedback. Everything in the Shop is discounted via the Mill River Program just as it is in the Golf Professional Shop. We truly carry something for everyone. For those of you who are fitness fanatics, we carry Asics shoes and activewear, for men and women, as well as Fila and K-Swiss gear. We have a new yoga collection made with organic cotton that is super soft and washes well, too! Additionally, we have a huge collection of tennis wear for men, women and children as well as tennis shoes. Finally, we have a variety of accessories, such as MAXX and Maui Jim sunglasses! Celias top 5 picks for women are pictured below! Most major athletic apparel manufactures offer performance apparel that helps you achieve better workouts or sport specific movements. This somewhat new technology can be seen in almost every sport. When was the last time you saw a golfer, tennis player, or professional athlete wearing anything made of cotton?
Most of the performance apparel is made of a polyester breathable material that “wicks” away sweat or moisture from your skin to keep you cool. This helps keep the body’s core temperature lower, which allows the athlete or workout enthusiast perform at a higher level otherwise not attainable with sweat loaded clothing. Being able to perform your best during the last set of a tennis match, final few holes of golf, or to have the ability to push yourself harder during your workout is priceless, and could be the edge you need to succeed. We are located downstairs in the Main Clubhouse, across from the Men's Card Room. If you haven’t had a chance to visit, come by on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Celia will help you dress for success on the Tennis Court or in the Fitness Center, and make you look fashionable while doing it. We truly appreciate your support, as the Shop is a one year pilot program! LIJA LAYERED SKIRTS $65 $40 Bright colors are light and fun for the summer season...

Invite your man to come and play tennis, and then we will enjoy a crab feast on the lower patio. The couples' social on Friday, August 16 is now cancelled due to some scheduling conflicts; it was originally scheduled as the Collegiate Tailgate themed event. This social is now part of the Friday, August 9 crab feast event.
A WORD FROM THE PRO... JOE MATTINGLY [DIRECTOR OF TENNIS] Many of you know that Julie Seanez, USTA Coordinator, will be leaving Cattail this month after eight years of service to CattailTennis. I want to take this opportunity to thank Julie for a tremendous job well done! Julie has been instrumental in organizing all the USTA leagues, interclub schedules, and many of the daytime socials and ladders at the Club. Julie also helped manage the online court reservation system, as well as sign-ups for lessons and clinics. Until the opening of our new Tennis & Fitness Pro Shop, clothing and racquet sales had been her responsibility, too! Julie has taught lessons and clinics, as well as been readily accessible to Members when a substitute was needed. Julie has worn many hats, and I attribute much of the success of our program over the last years to her help and hard work.
