FITNESS
ONE YEAR STRONGER: Real Members, with Real Results! John Foelber [fitness director]
This past year we have had a lot of Members participate in our boot camp classes. While all participants have seen a lot of progress towards their fitness goals, four of them have made extra-special progress. Working with Kristi Gorey for the past year, the four have taken part in some form of either boot camp sessions or small group/individual fitness programming sessions at Cattail twice a week since the first class on July 7, 2013. Listen to what they have to say about their involvement in our boot camp program.
I have been doing Kristi’s sunrise boot camp for over a year now, and I love it! My favorite is the big tire workouts! I have seen positive changes in myself and my fellow boot campers - we are stronger, leaner, and faster. Sticking with a consistent exercise program has always been hard for me so I am very glad I found Kristi and her boot camp, and I’m looking forward to another year of early morning workouts!
Looking back it has been a long year. I remember the first bootcamp I was able to do about a quarter of the exercises that Kristi was asking us to perform. One year later, I am so much stronger, and way more flexible. I absolutely love the structure and camaraderie of boot campwe are all sweaty and nasty, but we push, support, and challenge each other. I am thankful that I made the decision to start this journey a year ago, it is one of the most successful decisions I have ever made!
Kristi is a great coach, and her class challenges men and women at every fitness level. For me, her 6 AM class is great because I have no excuse to skip it. I reached my goal of losing 35 lbs. after about 6 months, and I've kept going and pushing myself even further because I love it. I've also seen my friends in the class succeed, which is inspiring!
After a year of running, burpees, pushups, crunches, squats, weights, lunges, TRX bands, kettle balls, butt kicks, bear crawls (the list goes on), I can definitely say I’m stronger and have more energy throughout the day. Kristi keeps us on our toes by mixing it up & pushing us to our individual levels each session. It’s been a great year & I look forward to continuing with this fun group!

AUGUST Fitness Challenge:
The Jump Rope Burn John Foelber [fitness director]
Jumping rope for 5 minutes Jumping rope is one of the simplest exercises that you can do, similar to other calisthenics or body weight exercises like push-ups, pull-ups, jumping jacks, or squats. While all of these exercises help you stay fit and healthy, jumping rope requires just a little more coordination and concentration. Jumping rope is also an excellent aerobic exercise similar to going for a jog, only better, since it burns between 6001000 calories an hour (depending on intensity), compared to the 550 average calorie burn that you get from jogging for the same duration. Because of its benefits, along with its ability to challenge your coordination and stamina, we will be using a jump rope for the August challenge. It’s really simple: jump rope for five minutes, count how many jumps you make and that’s your score. You can use one foot or two feet, hop, skip, or double jump the rope if you like but only forward rotating rope jumps will count. All rope lengths, ranging from 6 feet to 10 feet, are provided in the Fitness Center on the rack by the stretching mats. While there is ample room to jump rope in the Fitness Center, if you prefer you may also go outside for a little more room. I am guessing because the Membership is so fit, that the winning range will be between 750-900 jumps in five minutes.

GREEN REPORT CHRIS HARRIMAN
[GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT]
This summer the weather has been quite mild. Although we have seen a few hotter weeks with high humidity, Mother Nature has not deprived us of rain and weatherchanging cold fronts. Root lengths and overall health of the turf has remained satisfactory for the middle of summer. As average temperatures continue to drop, along with daylight length, we will be able to push the course harder and have it firmer and healthier than ever before. The clock is ticking and excitement is building for the Short Game Area Construction, and we are deep into final planning stages for Click the map to view the full size version of the rendering.

irrigation and drainage fitting that will be put into the ground. We continue to work with the County on the permitting process, and our Conditional Use Hearing is set for August 18. After this hearing, we will be very close to having all the necessary documents to proceed with construction on October 14. Throughout my research on this project I have visited a number of other short game facilities, and as I compare notes, my confidence grows that our new facility will be one of the best around! Fall restoration will take place during the weeks of August 18 and August 25. The Golf Course will be closed as usual on the 18th and the 25th, but on the following Tuesdays and Wednesdays, only nine holes will be open. Fall restoration will most likely involve aerating the fairways with solid tines,
Hello, my name is Drew Chevaux and I grew up in York, Pennsylvania. I graduated from Penn State University in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science in Turfgrass Science. After graduation I moved to New Jersey to become the Spray Tech at Baltusrol Golf Club. I remained there for three years before relocating back to Pennsylvania where I commuted to Columbia Country Club and worked as an Assistant Golf Course Superintendent. I came on board at Cattail Creek in the beginning of June to build upon my managerial and grass growing skills. I am currently engaged and will be getting married this October.

and pulling cores out of the tees. The greens will also have cores pulled out, as it has been 5 long months since a coring tine has graced the greens surfaces. Overall, the Golf Course has held up well this summer. In addition to the pleasant weather, continuing to limit mechanical damage and implementing the right amount of cultural practices at the right time have helped maintain elevated conditions. Keep up with the Green Department Blog to see these practices in action. I will see you all out on the Course!

Use Different Clubs when Chipping RICKY SERRANO
[DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTION]
Many amateurs use the same club on all chip shots, particularly when the pressure is on. This is not very effective because it is tough to control how far the ball travels in the air and how far it will roll once it hits the green. For consistent, predictable chip shots, I recommend you use different clubs depending on your lie, the slope and speed of the green. With a little practice, you will be able to accurately judge how far the ball will roll and carry with different clubs, widening your selection of shots around the green. Bring a pitching wedge, 8-iron and 6-iron to the chipping green. Find a level lie and hit one chip with each club. Repeat several times, and pay equal attention to each club. Use the same chipping technique with each club, seeing how far the ball carries and rolls with the different clubs. Through this practice, you will develop your own ‘chipping formula’ that will help you determine how the ball behaves with each one. My Chipping Formula: Pitching Wedge – 1/2 air time, 2/3 ground time 8 – iron – 1/3 airtime, 2/3 ground time 7 – iron – 1/4 airtime, 3/4 ground time 6 – iron – 1/5 airtime, 4/5 ground time. Each player’s formula will vary. Your club decision on specific shots will change due to factors such as terrain and speed of the green, but you will soon be able select the club that gives you the best chance of chipping the ball close to the hole. GOLF SHOP NEWS LAUren Burns
[golf shop merchandiser]
Eyes Can See Clearly Now Have you purchased your new pair of sunglasses yet this year? As a general rule, you should be wearing sunglasses if you are wearing sunscreen. Protecting your eyes is just as important as protecting your skin, although more often than we would like to admit, we skip the sunglasses. Many golfers feel that wearing sunglasses hinders their ability to play golf, especially when reading greens. That is not the case. You simply have to find the right type of lenses! A common myth is that polarized lenses are great for golfing, but polarized lenses are not what you are looking for when reading greens. They will distort the green and not allow you to read the putt correctly. If you like the look of polarized sunglasses, simply take them off when putting. In the Professional Shop, we carry two brands of sunglasses: Maui Jim and Oakley. While we are not able to order prescription or custom sunglasses with either company, we are still able to order an extensive variety, including readers and polarized sunglasses. Maui Jim, a company that first began in Hawaii, offers a wide selection of lightweight fashion and performance styles. Although they are extremely lightweight and appear to be fragile, they are very durable. Those that wear Maui Jim often comment that they forget they are even wearing sunglasses! Maui Jim also has a fast and efficient customer service department for repairs, sometimes even replacing the damaged pair with a completely new pair. Oakley, a company based more on athletes than the Hawaiian lifestyle, offers more of a sculptural style with their signature three-point fit. Oakley’s sunglasses can be split up between three main categories: Sport, Lifestyle, and Active. One of the most popular styles for golfing would be the Flak Jacket XLJ with the G30 Iridium lens, which are specifically designed for golf. Oakley makes switching out the lenses very easy as well, as many purchase a Lens Replacement Kit ($40) instead of an entirely new pair. Regardless of the brand you choose, sunglasses are an essential accessory if you are out and about. Price should never be an excuse either with our great Mill River pricing! Sunglasses make you look more fashionable, give you a more pleasing appearance (no squinting), and allow you to see the world in a whole new light (or tint!). Stop by the Professional Shop to view our great selection or shop online and fill out our Special Order Form. It’s as easy as that! Then you will be able to truly enjoy summer in your new shades.

pushing the ball long or lacking enough muster to get the ball over the net. While it feels like you’re doing the right thing since you are in a pressure situation and want to make sure you don’t mess up, you are actually shortening your otherwise beautifully fluid strokes. This attempt to keep the ball in play ultimately does more harm than good which is why I always tell my students to finish your swing. This ensures that you hit the shot right where you want it and reduces the stress associated with errors. So once again I’ll reinforce ‘finish your swing!”

If you watch Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, or Novak Djokovic – no matter the score, they play confidently. They trust their game completely, and so should you. Often you will see lower-ranked players take the higher-ranked players like Djokovic to the latter stages of a set. If you watch carefully, when the chips are down and the set is on the line, the lower ranked player freezes up, but Djokovic’s game does not change one bit. If anything, Djokovic shows even more confidence than he did earlier in the set. Be smart – play like the pros.Trust your own swings, and thrive under pressure! I look forward to seeing your swings on the courts soon!
Mental side of the Game What to Watch for in this year’s US OPEN: August 25 – September 8 ALEX JUSTINIANI [DIRECTOR OF TENNIS] In both singles and doubles you will see various routines right before the players will serve. This is an extremely important part of each player’s game. You can usually pick out a player just by watching their routine. Some examples of players with famous routines are: Rafael Nadal, John McEnroe, Maria Sharapova, Andy Roddick etc… In changeovers you will see players take their time to reflect and take care of their body or equipment. You can see anything from a player eating and drinking, to changing the grip or racquet all together. You will also observe players ask for trainers in the event of any injuries. So, as you can tell, there is a lot more to watch and learn than just the actual points. The best players in the world have mastered what they do in between points, and usually The US Open championships are just around the corner and the present a perfect opportunity to learn from the best players in the world. I always like to tell my students to try to watch as much of this event as they can. It can be very beneficial if you focus in on a

skill or stroke you may be learning. In a match that lasts two and a half hours, the average time that the players are actually hitting a ball is about 20 minutes. At any level of tennis, one of the hardest tasks is to keep your focus throughout an entire match. Here are a few things to look for when you are watching this year that will help you learn to focus in between points. In doubles matches you will see a great deal of communication after every single point. Most of the time the team will meet around the service line, high five their partner and exchange

a few words. The majority of the time they will plan out the first two shots of the point. For example where they are serving to, or where they are returning. In singles matches you will see a great deal of time spent after each point walking around behind the baseline. A lot of the time players are releasing the previous point and coming up with a strategy for the next point. They will use items like a towel or fixing their strings as a
