Crocs News Karen Heinz [Crocs Coach]

The Crocs have enjoyed starting their Monday morning practices with a nice session of Yoga before hitting the pool! We traveled to both Argyle and Avenel Country Club this month to compete in swim meets; many swimmers had personal best times! There were 3 records broken by Drew Wolven (6U free and back) and Christopher DeCamillo (7-8 25 back). Congrats! The rain did not put a damper on the Pasta Pig Out (Monday, June 24), although pictures had to be rescheduled. The team headed over to the Main Clubhouse to make cards for the Children’s Inn (at National Institute of Health) for children battling cancer, and enjoyed time out of the pool to socialize amongst friends.

Golf

Rule of the Month Tyson McFarland [Assistant Golf Professional] The provisional ball rule is a rule that was designed to assist with pace of play, which has become a hot topic in the golf industry. We all hate it when we can’t find our ball, or when we do find it, and it happens to be just out of bounds. When your ball goes out of bounds, or is lost outside a water hazard, Rule 27-1 requires you to return to the spot from which the original ball was last played, and under penalty of one stroke, put another ball into play. Rule 27-2 allows you to play a provisional ball when the ball might be out of bounds or lost outside a water hazard, but there are some requirements you must meet to use this rule. You must play the provisional before going forward to search. You must declare that it is a provisional to your fellow-competitor before playing it. Be specific; say, “this is a provisional.” Finally, you may not hit a provisional if the only place the ball could be lost is in a water hazard. If you violate these restrictions, the ball is not a provisional - it becomes your ball in play, and the original ball may not be played. The provisional becomes your ball in play when: 1. The original is out of bounds 2. You have searched for five minutes without finding the original. 3. You play the provisional from a place where the original is likely to be or somewhere nearer the hole than that. The provisional must be abandoned when: 1. You find the original ball in-bounds inside five minutes. 2. You determine that the original is in a water hazard.

Junior Spotlight

BUNKER to BUNKER The season is in full swing, the weather has been beautiful, and the Golf Course is in fantastic condition. This month features our Senior Club Championship on July 20-21, along with our Junior Club Championship the following weekend, July 27-28. If you have not signed up yet for these great events, I encourage you to do so today! The Professional Staff has been very busy with instruction, club fitting, and getting out on the Course with the Membership. The inaugural Golf 101 women’s clinics wrapped up last month and proved to be a huge success, bringing many new ladies into the game of golf and re-kindling the passion for the game for some ladies who have taken extended breaks. I plan on offering an additional session of Golf 101 in the Fall; stay tuned for more details. Nic, Ricky, Tyson, Eli, Wilson and I have all been enjoying the first month of our brand new Junior Golf Academy. It is exciting for us to see so many kids excited to learn and play golf! We still have openings in both of our Junior Golf Camps in July for either beginner or intermediate level Juniors. Additionally, the Junior Interclub season kicks off in July. Please come and visit us in the Golf Shop as we will continue to be showcasing some new summer merchandise from Peter Millar, Polo RLX, Adidas, Under Armour, Puma, and other brands you love. Be on the lookout for some new Nike and Garb junior apparel, and Lauren is working on the possibility of bringing in some exciting new ladies lines in the future. As always, if we do not have something you are looking for in stock, we will make every effort to order it for you at Mill River discount pricing! Thank you all for your continued support this season. Hope to see you all soon on the Golf Course! Everything for Golf,

Bennett Buch took First Place in the Maryland Junior Amateur Championship! He won by three strokes. Bob Wampler PGA Head Golf Professional

Golf Shop News Lauren Burns [Merchandise Coordinator] It is officially summer! The temperatures are soaring and the moisture in the air is thick. To beat the heat, it is important to understand what each polo in the Professional Shop can do to help you! Here are some simplified features of a couple of brands: Adidas: Climacool - for warmer days, 100% polyester, mesh ventilation in criticalheat zones; UPF 15+ Climalite - for cooler days; 95% polyester jersey and 5% Lycra (a brand of spandex) RLX: Wicking - sweat hits inner fabric and immediately spreads, which allows sweat to evaporate and dry more quickly Peter Millar Ladies E4: Blends - mixture of two or more fibers that are spun together; individual yarns that contain two or more different fibers; 92% Polyester and 8% Spandex. The blend allows the polo to offer a very functional construction in terms of moisture management and temperature regulation in all conditions. You do not have to be a golfer to snag some great deals either. Guys can stay cool in some Peter Millar swim trunks at the pool! However, if you are a golfer, this new technology is just another reason to update your wardrobe. Be sure to come and try on some of these featured polos and feel the difference yourself!

Ricky’s Tip: Hitting a Draw and Fade Shot RIcky Serrano [Director of Instruction] Follow my simple steps on how I hit a draw.

To hit a fade follow these simple steps.

1. Aim your clubface at the target.

1. Aim your clubface at the target.

2. Align your feet, hips and shoulders to the right of the target. Generally, the more right you aim, the more draw-spin you will be able to put on the ball.

2. Align your feet, hips and shoulders to the left of the target. Generally, the more left you aim, the more side-spin you will be able to put on the ball.

3. ‘Strengthen’ your left-hand grip just a touch, by turning your left hand clockwise on your grip.

3. Swing back so that your shaft points slightly left of the target, at the top of your backswing - the further left you aim, the more the ball should fade.

4. Swing down ‘inside’ the line, sweeping your club across the target line from left to right. 5. The ball will take off to the right of your target and then gradually curve back in to the left. Experiment on the range by using the tips above - take note of how the ball reacts and adjust your set-up for more or less draw, as required.

4. Swing down on an outside-in path, sweeping your club across the target line from right to left. 5. The ball will take off to the left of your target and then gradually curve back in to the right. Once again, I will encourage you to experiment on the range, by using the tips above - take note of how the ball reacts and adjust your set-up for more or less fade, as required.

Golf

Green Report Chris Harriman [Golf Course Superintendent] As we make our way into July, summertime temperatures are here, but along with them have come significant rains. Last year at this time, we were 6 inches behind in rainfall and were utilizing the irrigation system to its full extent. This year, we continue to get hit with thunderstorms, and our total rainfall for the year is actually hovering right around normal. All of our current cultural practices have helped keep the water moving through the profile. Our aerations and use of sand help promote firm and healthy surfaces, no matter what Mother Nature decides to give (or not give) us. Out on the Golf Course, we have taken many precautions to make sure the turf stays alive and healthy in the heat. In addition to aerations and the Dryject procedure, we also utilize wetting agents to help keep the turf uniformly moist. Wetting agents are basically fancy soaps that strip organic acid off the thatch and soil particles to allow water to penetrate and become available to the plant. Without wetting agents, the many localized dry spots around the Course would quickly die from drought stress. On the other hand, wetting agents also allow water to move down into the soil. Although bentgrass is a superior surface to play golf on, it has an inherent problem of producing thatch. Thatch is basically dead stems and root material that accumulate just underneath the leaves of the plant. Without proper aeration and use of wetting agents, water would continually saturate this layer. Saturated soil conditions yield higher soil temperatures and disable gas exchange which ultimately lead to thin, mushy and

dead turf. Our cultural practices alleviate this problem and we work hard to maintain our bentgrass surfaces in a healthy manner. Summertime weather also puts stress on the turf in the rough. Over the next three months, you will see changes start to happen again in the rough. Higher temperatures and moisture levels mean that the ryegrass and Poa annua in the rough will start to incur hefty amounts of disease. These fungi quickly thin turf out and provide unsatisfactory playing conditions. This is the very reason (along with the poor drought and wear tolerance of ryegrass) why we will continue our transition to turf type tall fescue this fall. During the next two months, we will be evaluating the rough and together with the Green Committee, we will determine where we can afford to sod and where we will aggressively seed with the tall fescue. As summer rolls on, you will see the turf type tall fescue already installed start to shine, as the rye and Poa annua in our roughs will continue to melt away. This entire process is a multiyear program that requires patience and diligence from everyone involved. The results, to date, have been outstanding, and we look forward to making more progress. Summertime is always a stressful time on the Golf Course. Please help us out by driving your golf cart intelligently, following the cart rules (staying out of the rough and mounds), and fixing ball marks. If you have a question about anything pertaining to the Course, please do not hesitate to send an email or flag us down. We all want to work together to make the experience at Cattail special every day. See you out there!

NOTICE how consistent and lush the tall fescue is on the left. The ryegrass on the right is inconsistent and full of disease.

USTA News Julie Seanez [USTA Cordinator] The 2013 Adult 18 & Over USTA season has come to an end. John Deleonibus and his team have clinched the win of the Men’s 3.0 Carroll County League with an undefeated record. John’s team will proceed directly to the Maryland District Tournament being held the weekend of July 12-14. Bob Lahmann’s Men’s 3.5 team came in fourth place in the Carroll County League. In the men’s 4.0 Cattail League, Allan Cranska’s team won the league with a 6-3 record. For the women, three teams will have secured moving on to the Playoffs with Howard County. Libbie Jones captains the 2.5 women and finished the season with a 6-2 record. Jen Sheehan’s 3.0 team edged out Julie Kennell’s first year team, both with 8-2 records. Jen’s team won by 2 individual wins. Missy LePage’s team took first place in the women’s 3.5 league with Eileen Dietz’s Zebra team coming in a close second. Cattail had a good showing in the Howard County Playoffs. Libbie Jones and her team will advance to the Maryland District Tournament, they won their playoff match 2-1 against a tough Columbia team. Jen Sheehan’s 3.0 team was 1-1 in the playoffs as were the other 2 teams. Unfortunately, it came down to wins and Jen’s team was not in the running. However, Elaine Yoltay’s Circle D 3.0 team came in second place and they received a birth to districts. Missy LePage’s 3.5 team also advances to districts. Allan Cranska’s 4.0 men’s team lost 3-2 in their playoff match against Columbia. Interclub Interclub Green C and Foxy Ladies will both resume after the Labor Day Holiday. Intraclub The men’s and women’s singles ladders are being played throughout July as well as the women’s doubles ladder. Please remember to email your scores to Julie at Julie.seanez@ cattailcreekcc.com when you have completed your matches. Women’s Summer 3.0 League We have 4 teams in our women’s 3.0 leagues. Monica Adams, Jen Sheehan, Mary Beth Crawford and Sheri Good are captaining teams in this pilot program. A Word from the Pro Joe Mattingly [Director of Tennis] It has been an extremely busy summer with the USTA Spring season coming to a finish, Junior League off to a good start, and all of the Summer League and Ladder matches starting. With that being said, please remember to secure your court and time of play by using the online court reservation system. Congratulations to all the players and teams that have made it to the USTA District/State Championships which will be held the weekend of July 12 -14 in Columbia, MD. More details regarding the specific teams and players are listed in the USTA section of this newsletter. I would like to remind everyone that kids coming from the pool to play tennis must wear proper tennis attire. Shirts must be worn at all times as well as proper tennis shoes. The new date for the Women’s Member Guest is Friday, September 6. Click here to register. I would like to take a moment to recognize Mike Frocke, our Court Maintenance Supervisor. With the addition of two new courts and an increased work schedule, the courts and surrounding facilities have never looked better. Thanks Mike; job well done!

Tim’s Tip of the Month: Correct Priorities for Winners Tim Halter [Head Tennis Professional] Question. In match play, which is more important: increasing your core consistency or hitting spectacular shots and winners? Most players would immediately answer core consistency, though their actions will demonstrate the opposite. Their match play will actually show them trying to pound in winner after winner, all the while not giving a thought to maintaining consistency. To make matters worse, consistency is often interpreted as hitting shots directly to an opponent. This is not necessarily so. A player can be consistent and hit the ball away from an opponent without attempting to hit a spectacular winner, but this idea is foreign to most players! Although the pros hit shots away from their opponents all the time, apparently the image that sticks in a spectator’s mind is that one spectacular final shot, the booming winner that whizzes by the opponent. It is crucial to understand the balance between consistency and winners and to prioritize them properly in match play. To begin, consistency is the preeminent skill you are attempting to master. Consistency is what establishes momentum. Winners and spectacular shots are built upon your solid base of consistency, staunchly supported by your core game. Think of consistency as the foundation of a building and winners as the building itself. Everyone sees the building and the unique structure that exists, but no one sees the foundation that makes

the structure possible. The same is true for tennis. The spectacular, outstanding, dazzling shot is the building that everyone can see, while the foundation of consistency is the solid support that goes unseen. Consistency is the true unsung hero in tennis. When you are in a match and things are going wrong, do not try to hit winners to make up for the poor play. If you are playing poorly, you have lost your foundation of consistency. Winners are not the solution. Slow down, begin the plodding routine of one point at a time and work to reestablish your consistency. To grab back the momentum you have lost in match play, you must remember that winners feed off of consistency. Without your foundation of consistency, you will have no winners! Although this seems simple, consistency is one of the most difficult concepts for people to master. Human nature will fight this principle tooth and nail! Players swear that in order to win they have to DO MORE. But they do not! Why do you think pushers win so much? Consistency and only consistency. When a pusher adds a few winners to his core consistency, a complete player emerges. Priority number one: consistency. Priority number two: winners and spectacular shots. Keep these priorities in the correct order and I guarantee you will set yourself apart from most players.
