Manager’s Desk

Dear Member, Fall has arrived and business at the Club is strong. Financially, we are having a great year. Membership continues to grow and we have 50 more families than we did at this point last year. The effects of the growth positively impact every department. Rounds of golf are up 21% and we are on point to reach the 20,000 round mark this season. Restaurant sales are up $167k and the profit margin is two times our budget. Golf Pro Shop sales are up 37% and on track to be the highest in Club history. From the expense side of the ledger, there is more good news. The management team has succeeded in keeping expenses in-line. The only line items that are currently over budget are direct results of the increased revenue. Management and Club Leadership will begin the 2013 budgeting process in October. We expect to finish the season on a high note and we certainly appreciate your continued patronage. Please review the details of our newly introduced ‘Fall Free Dues’ special on the inside front cover, and our plan to begin increasing initiation rates in 2013. Now is definitely the best time to join the Club, and I am asking each and every Member to pass along the details of the Fall Special to at least one friend or colleague. Each referral keeps up the Club’s positive momentum and helps us continue on the path of financial health. The year 2013 will mark Cattail Creek’s 20th Anniversary and our Board of Directors is beginning to plan for a very special year. It is impossible for me to look forward without also reflecting back on the great people I have met over the course of my, sofar, seven seasons at the Club. Cattail had 47 founding Members, and of that elite group, a good number are still active Members of the Club. I recently ran into one Founder, George Bachrach, as he was finishing dinner at the Club. I had not seen him in a while and we chatted briefly. Mr. Bachrach informed me that he had only played golf three times this season and that he now uses the Club sparingly. Between his career and traveling, he does not have much time but he stated that when he spends time at the Club, it is always fantastic. In the next year or so after retirement, he plans to resume using the Club more often. He also told me that he always looks forward to seeing Claude, Michelle, and Scott when he visits. If you are a newer Member, please know that our holiday season, and corresponding events are very, very popular, so it is important to make your online reservations as soon as possible. Look out for the Cattail Creek Holiday Guide in your inbox around the middle of the month - it will contain all of the logistics you need to know to get in on the holiday events at the Club. It is also time to book your family or company holiday party at the Club; there are plenty of great dates still available. Question about a charge on your bill? View itemized details by logging into the website. Have you ever received a statement, looked a line item from the Restaurant or Golf Shop, and had difficulty remembering what it was, or why the cost is what it shows? Good news! You can drill down and view the details in an itemized fashion by simply logging into the website. Use your username and password to access the ‘Member’s Only’ side of our site. Then navigate to ‘My Billing and Statements’ under the ‘My Club’ tab at the top of the homepage, or in the ‘Quick Links’ section to the left. You can view and open statements, and double click on any line item to view complete details. Often times, just looking at the items ordered, helps to trigger the memory and resolve the question. “Oh yeah, that’s right, we did think that ordering that second bottle of wine was in our best interest at the end of the evening,” and “I KNEW that set of TaylorMade clubs that appeared in the garage weren’t a gift from a colleague! Kid Zone Fall Hours The Cattail Creek Kid Zone offers shortterm babysitting while a parent is on the Club premises. It is located on the lower level of the Clubhouse. COMING NOVEMBER 10: FREE GOLF FITNESS CLASSES IN THE LEARNING CENTER


Green Report CHRIS HARRIMAN [GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT]

Mother Nature will always find a way to balance things out. We apparently used up all of our rain credits this spring and summer… with only three rain events in September totaling 1.5 inches, the pump house and wells have been hard at work keeping our seedlings alive and growing. The bentgrass on our greens, tees and fairways do not mind the cool, dry weather. Roots are once again digging deep and surfaces are firming up nicely. October is again predicted to have some great weather, but with last year’s highs ranging from 51 to 85 degrees, anything can happen. As many of you have witnessed, our major project for September was installing turf type tall fescue into the roughs. The germination rates and subsequent results thus far have been outstanding. Although most of our processes have been very invasive, we are seeing extreme amounts of new turf type tall fescue seedling take over and thrive. This new tall fescue is bred to survive the crazy summers of the Mid-Atlantic. Its drought tolerance, disease resistance, wear tolerance, playability and overall growth habits heavily outperform the traits of the pre-existing perennial ryegrass. The tall fescue seedlings will continue to fill in this fall and provide us with a much more consistent and fair rough for years to come. Our October focus remains on the rough as well as some of the naturalized areas. Close to one acre of tall fescue sod will be laid around select high activity green surrounds. With the tight corners and high foot traffic of green surrounds, laying sod is much more effective than trying to encourage new seedling growth in these areas. We will also be venturing further out into the naturalized areas to do some much needed clean up. Areas in between #1 and #9, right of #2 and #4, the right of #15 and #16 and behind #14 green are full of invasive weeds. From Japanese Stiltgrass to Large Foxtail, Fall Panicum and Mile-a-Minute weed, there is a lot of work to do.

The areas on 7 and 12 that we sprayed with round-up last month have filled in with a beautiful uniform stand of tall fescue.

Our plan is to mow these areas down, clean them up as best as possible, and then apply a post and pre-emergent herbicide to help improve the desirable stands for next year. The Little Bluestem, Fine Fescue and Broomsedge in these areas will pop back up in the Spring and again give us the definition you have grown accustomed to. Hopefully many of you have been keeping up with the Green Department Blog this fall and have a good understanding of the improvements being made in the rough. Your patience now yields for a substantial elevation of quality for this year, next year and 20 more years down the road. Thank you! �

Cutting down these tall native areas usually acts as the best herbicide. This will enable us to also treat with a pre-emergent herbicide and try to stay ahead of invasive weeds for next year.

There are plenty of misconceptions when it comes to ladies’ golf. I should know – I used to believe them before I begrudgingly took it up a couple of years ago. To my complete surprise, it has become an activity I really enjoy, particularly in the company of other Cattail women golfers. While I’m thrilled I can go out and play – uh, at least keep up with – my husband, kids, friends or strangers, there are some unique benefits to what some call “girlfriend golf.” I’d like to share just a few:

THE GLORIES OF

GIRLFRIEND It meets many different needs, often, at once. Whether you’ve never swung a club, are coming back to it after a long hiatus, or play every chance you get, golf is one of the few sports that’ll allow for women of different skill sets, body types, activity levels and learning curves. Yes, it’s a great outlet for the highly competitive athlete. But it’s also the ideal venue for the uncoordinated who’s simply seeking more social interaction. I know women who do it to get in a good walk, some who just want the opportunity to play with their family, and others who use it to expand their professional network. Playing with other women helps you learn the rules better, teaches you how to play strategically, and exposes you to more club members, all in a non-threatening, easy-going environment.

BY LURDES ABRUSCATO It brings you up to par, so to speak. The great thing about the handicap system is you can play with just about anyone. When I first started, I couldn’t imagine playing a full round with other people or, heaven forbid, joining one of the women’s leagues. But here’s a little secret I quickly learned: The beauty (and agony) of golf is that you’re really just competing with YOURSELF, so unless you’re in a team event or a tournament situation, nobody really cares what you’re scoring because they’re too busy worried about their own score. So long as you’re adhering to some basic golf etiquette (don’t talk while someone’s hitting, if you don’t know a rule—ask) and keeping up pace of play, nobody’s going to give you a hard time about that ridiculously high score. In fact, it’s been my experience that women golfers will encourage and guide you on the links because they remember all too well what it was like in the beginning. It will open up your world. As part of Cattail’s 9-hole ladies’ league, I play with a 78-year-old who walks and carries her bag, regaling us with tales of what the course looked like before it was a course, and a 16-year-old who has enlightened us on what it takes to join the high school golf team. There are young stay-at-home moms who have to finish in time to pick up the kids from preschool, to high-powered professionals who adjust their workload to get in a round. During any given loop, we might discuss chip shots, rental properties, lay-up techniques, child rearing tips, wind direction, book club picks, club grips, recipe exchanges and more. Many of the women with whom I’ve played aren’t necessarily women I’d seek out in my everyday world, but my golf game, and my life, are better because of them.

It really is fun. Based on the hushed tones and intense focus, you assume this is a very serious game. And while I’ve encountered a couple of intense moments, I can’t remember a ladies’ golf day when I haven’t laughed … a lot. We play goofy games and earn points that don’t necessarily correlate with golf techniques. We cheer like crazy when you chip into the hole, never mind that it’s your eighth stroke. We applaud great putts and long drives, and make much of that one (and sometimes only) great shot that will bring you back next week. We commiserate over shots into bunkers or water or rock walls or creek beds. We joke about favorite holes, despised holes, ricochet shots and difficult ball lies. And when all else fails, we chalk it up to the difficult game and go have fun at lunch.

It’s getting better every day. The onus is on women to grow the game for women – not the pros, TV personalities, or the guy down the street. And if you want to grow the game, you’ve got to play the game. We live in a post-Title IX world, where girl athletes are the norm and not the exception, where many of our children will never know of golf courses that don’t permit women, and where we’re not restricted to womenspecific time slots. We have access to a stunning, private course with a slew of well-trained professionals eager to teach us. We’re not stuck playing with handme-down, sawed-off clubs, especially with the evolution of amazing women-centric equipment, clothing and gear. And we don’t want to get out there because we’re embarrassed to swing and miss? Nonsense.

TIP OF THE MONTH Short Putting Drill RICKY SERRANO [DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTION] Here is one of my favorite putting drills, focusing on short putts. Everyone can benefit, whether you’re a beginner or carry a single digit handicap. For this drill, all you need is one golf ball and twelve tees. THE SET UP Find a hole with a gentle slope. Place a tee 3 feet from the hole, straight uphill. (A) Place a second tee 3 feet from the hole on a right to left slope. (B) Place a third tee 3 feet from the hole straight downhill. (C) Place another tee 3 feet from the hole on a left to right slope. (D) Repeat for 4, 5, and 6 feet.

THE DRILL Putt around the tees counterclockwise, starting with the uphill putt (A), then move to the right-to-left putt (B), then the downhill putt (C), and finishing with the left-to-right putt (D). You get one point for each putt you make. Complete the 3-foot range 8 times (a total of 24 3-foot putts). Move to the 4-foot uphill putt, and complete that circle twice (a total of 8, 4- ft. putts). Do the same for the 5-foot and 6-foot range. �

September 8 was the date for the Parent-Child event, and 42 golfers were able to finish their rounds of golf just before the thunderstorms rolled in. In grand fashion, this event saw a repeat of last year’s champions. Spencer & Andy Wilson and Justin & Scott Allen were able to successfully defend in the gross 18 hole and 9 hole divisions, respectively. The Wilsons fired a round of 71 while the Allen’s score of 39 was good enough to come out on top. Maddy & Brad Davis won the 18 hole net division with a score of 57; Michael & Greg Forester were victorious in the 9 hole net division with a score of 30. The inaugural CCWGA 9 Hole League Interclub Invitational (group shot at left) on Tuesday, September 11 was a great success! 45 golfers teed it up for 9 holes of golf in a better ball of partners event. The field was comprised of a variety of lady golfers: league regulars, tennis players, guests of Members, and even golfers from other local clubs. A majority of the proceeds from the event went to Pancreatic Cancer research in memory of CCWGA 9 Hole League Member Cathy Herold. It was a beautiful day for golf, laughs, smiles, and memories! The Women’s Member-Member on the 15th saw a new pair of champions emerge from the field. The event’s unique format featured 6 holes of each of the following formats: better ball, alternate shot, and scramble. Judy Hogarty and Nancy Cole’s score of 62 (pictured above) provided them with a 6 stroke margin of victory over Loraine Ruttenberg and Wendy Michaelson. A special thank you to all of the ladies who participated in this year’s Member-Member and we look forward to an even bigger field next year! �

Staff Corner Hello Cattail Members!

COMING IN NOVEMBER:

I have had the good fortune to become acquainted with many of you already, but for those who I’ve not met, my name is Michael Cuscino, and I am currently on a 6-month internship out of California University of Pennsylvania (50 miles South of Pittsburgh, PA). At school, I am majoring in Professional Golf Management, as well as Marketing, and I will graduate this May, 2013.

How well do you know the Restaurant Staff?

Just as many Cattail dads do, my father taught me how to play when I was about nine years old, and I just never let it go! My love for the game of golf has inspired me to pursue a career in the industry, and my internship at Cattail has helped me move towards that goal. Now, I enjoy teaching my dad a thing or two! When I’m not golfing, I have a very large family that I love spending time with. I am very fortunate to have each of them in my life, as they are a great source of support, and I look forward to having a family of my own one day. I also enjoy spending time (and golfing) with my girlfriend Maria who I met at school my freshman year. (She was recruited for the golf team at our school from her home in Columbia, South America!) Sadly, I will be finishing up my internship here in November and returning to college. I have had a great time at Cattail, and the experience of working here with the Staff and Members has taught me a lot about golf, life, and myself, too! I want to thank you all for your own contribution to the adventure, and I will surely miss those who I’ve met along the way. I wish the best for the entire Cattail Creek community, and I hope to be able to visit soon.

A Word from the Pro: JOE MATTINGLY [DIRECTOR OF TENNIS] The 2nd Annual Cattail Creek Tennis Classic was held September 20th-23rd and was a huge success. Over 140 participants and over 230 entries made for an extremely busy and exciting weekend. It was truly a group effort by many volunteers and the Cattail Staff. I would personally like to thank each and every one of them for a job well done! The information for the first indoor clinic session will soon be out and available for online registration on a first come, first serve basis, as always. The eight-week session will run from November 5th to December 31st.

Although there were some distractions in the parking lot, there were many spectators this year at the Classic... for the most part, they did actually watch the matches!

USTA NEWS JULIE SEANEZ [USTA COORDINATOR] The USTA Combo Districts are scheduled for the weekend of October 19-21. Our season is winding down with a few levels coming down to the last match. The 5.5 Women’s teams tied for first are captained by Suzanne Arena and Sheri Good/Terri Curran. They both have a 7-2 record. The 6.5 women are also tied; Eileen Dietz and Kelly Garofalo each captain teams with 6-2 records. Kellie Keehn’s 7.5 team has clinched the league with a 5-2 record and 2 matches to go.

Our indoor court time at Circle D was cut back again, so clinic space and instruction time will be limited. Tim will conduct all of his instruction at Circle D, and I will be teaching at both Circle D and Twin Lakes. The owner at Twin Lakes has given the green light to have a court anytime during the day between 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. I encourange anyone interested in lesson time at Twin Lakes to contact me and work out a time. Twin Lakes is approximately a 25-minute commute from Cattail, located off of Liberty Road. As many of you know, last winter I offered weekend workouts at The Plantations Tennis Club in Rehobeth Beach. They were extremely popular, and I hosted12 trips to The Plantations by the beginning of the Spring. If you are interested in a team or group weekend this winter, please contact me as soon as possible. They are filling up quickly! �

October CCWTA Socials: Wednesday, 10.10 9:30 a.m. - Play with the Pro Wednesday, 10.24 9:30 a.m. - Halloween Tennis

For the men, John Kelly’s 6.5 team is in the lead with a 3-0 record, but there are 3 matches yet to be played, so it could come down to the wire. Don Reuwer’s team has won the 7.5 division and will proceed to the District playoffs with Columbia.

Carley Pera, a freshman, (one of Tim Halter’s students) made the varsity tennis team at Poolesville High School. Playing singles for the Falcons, Carley currently has a 6-3 record overall. Poolesville is a Division 2 team in Montgomery County. Unlike Howard County, Montgomery County girls tennis teams play in the fall. Congratulations, Carley, and keep up the good work!

Howard County’s 3.0 senior women’s USTA tennis team won the Mid-Atlantic Section title and will compete for a national title in early October. Cattail Member, Lori Jacoby is second from left. Congratulations!

Champions Control What They Can Control! TIM HALTER

[HEAD TENNIS PROFESSIONAL]

As a tennis player, it is critical to understand that you can’t control every aspect of the game. There is the physical game that will unfold in front of you, and there is the mental game that will unfold in front of you, too. You cannot control everything that is a result of the physical game, but you can control everything related to the mental game. For instance, say you are in a match, and on a crucial point you hit a shot down the line. A gust of wind moves the ball slightly off course and the call is out. You go ballistic because of the misfortune that occurs at just the wrong moment. “How unfair, I can’t believe it, why me,” and so forth. Fifteen minutes later, you finally recover. In the meantime, you have missed who knows how many shots because of your poor mental attitude. What should you be thinking? You can only control what you can control. What you cannot control is the wind, the weather, your opponent or even a missed shot. What you can control is your mental attitude regarding the event that just unfolded. The unfortunate event was out of your control and is now in the past, but the correct mental attitude about that event is still within your reach. Your mental attitude is the part of the game that you have complete control over, if you choose to accept the challenge. Tennis professionals have learned to develop very short memories about their failures and mistakes. Why? Because they clearly understand it is the only aspect of the game that can be totally controlled. After a crushing loss at the hands of Andy Murray in the finals of the 2012 Olympics, Roger Federer displayed his typical wisdom. An interviewer asked Roger if it would take a few days to get over this defeat. Roger said, “A few days! It will take me about fifteen CAT TALES

minutes.” For the pros, nurturing a short memory is part of the game that is in their control. A bad line call, missed shots, wind, sun, a poor performance, perfect shots from their opponent, etc. are out of their control and quickly forgotten. They find a way to adapt and keep moving. Knowing that the solution is in their own thoughts and decisions, the pros set out to master the decisionmaking process of the game. Then, life gets a lot easier on the courts! Like your weekly physical training, your decision-making process must also be practiced and mastered. When you are in a match and things are not going well, stop, think and remind yourself that you are in control internally. Forget it and move on. Do not relinquish control to the external event. Once you experience the shift in mental attitude that you have created, you will begin to understand the power of this decision-making process. Champions only attempt to control what they CAN control.You must do the same! �
