Hey Cattail Kids!
EGG NOG
Jingles is here!
We can’t promise that it will be as good as Claude’s Famous Egg Nog, but this holiday season, try making your own and let us see your finished product using the hashtag #cattaileggnog!
Make sure to follow Cattail Creek on Instagram (@cattailcreekcc) to keep track of Jingles this holiday season. Throughout the month of December, please use #cattailelf if you post your own photos of Jingles and his activities at the Club! Remember: Jingles reports back to Santa at the North Pole every night, so make sure you’re on your best Cattail behavior!
6 large egg yolks 3/4 cup granulated sugar 3 cups whole milk 1 1/2 tsp. nutmeg 1/4 tsp. cinnamon 1 cup heavy cream 1-2 oz. bourbon, cognac, or brandy 1-2 oz. rum, to taste 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract
Let’s Play a Game! Cattail kids are invited to grab a copy of the 2015 Holiday Guide (they are scattered around the Club) or check out the online version via the Club website and find Jingles hidden in every holiday event flyer. The first Cattail Kid to spot all of Jingles locations in each flyer will win a prize! To submit your answers, email us at: cattailcreekcc@cattailcreekcc.com
Method 1. In a large bowl, or the bowl of your stand mixer, beat the egg yolks until smooth and lightened in color. Add the sugar slowly, while mixing, and continue to beat until pale and fluffy. Set aside. 2. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the milk, nutmeg, cinnamon, and pinch of salt. Heat until steaming, stirring occasionally. Do not let it boil! 3. Slowly temper the egg with the hot milk mixture. To do this, carefully pour the hot milk mixture over the egg yolks and sugar, while whisking continuously to keep the eggs from scrambling. Once all of the liquid has been incorporated, return the mixture to the saucepan. 4. Cook over medium-low heat until the mixture begins to thicken slightly, stirring constantly and scraping the bottom of the pot to prevent scorching. If you have a thermometer, cook until the temperature reaches 160 degrees F. Do not let it boil, or the mixture will curdle! 5. Remove from the heat and stir in the heavy cream, vanilla extract, and liquors (if using). If there are any lumps, pass the eggnog through a fine mesh strainer. 6. Chill in the fridge for at least a couple of hours, or overnight, before serving. Fresh eggnog can be stored for up to a several days, or longer if it has the alcohol added.

2. Never arrive at an event hungry: It is almost impossible to control your food choices when you are hungry. The desire for large volumes of whatever looks and tastes good is too strong. Solution: Have a snack or small meal beforehand that includes protein, fat,

SUCCESS
and fiber to keep you satiated. This makes for a safer start to the holiday parties with overflowing tables of food and bottomless drinks.
3. Don’t forget to exercise: Adding in some more “intense” exercise around days when you know you’ll be eating more can mitigate some of the damage caused by holiday indulgences. While walking is a key component of a daily movement routine, you’ll want to do more during the holidays to help prevent the extra weight gain. Need some ideas? Solution: Try high intensity interval training (HIIT) like a Tabata. Tabatas
Sara Cooper [Fitness Instructor]
The 5-week eating fest from Thanksgiving to New Years can be challenging for health and fitness maintenance. The holidays are a time for celebration, and in Western culture, it means feasting! So, feast on the holi-DAY, perhaps even the eve, but mindfully eat to maintain in between. Overindulgence, not exercising, and staying up too late can wreck your metabolism and lead to unwanted weight gain. Here are some tips to survive the holidays while having fun and maintaining your health and fitness goals: 1. Adopt the 3:1 Rule: Stress over avoiding danger foods coupled with the guilt that occurs post-indulging can be worse for your health than just eating the food itself! Keep this mantra in mind: It’s better to eat the wrong food with the right attitude than the right food with the wrong attitude. That said, be smart about how you indulge this holiday season. I tell my clients for every one cheat item, have 3 healthy choices. The 3:1 ratio helps keep clients on the right track and not sabotage their health gains. Solution 1: Eat sugar mindfully: when you do indulge, savor it! If you’re going to have a cookie, eat it slowly and take time to notice the delicious flavors. This may even help you make better dessert choices, as many “treats” aren’t even that tasty if you pay close attention to how they taste. (Have you ever eaten a cheap store-bought cookie with a mindful approach? Yuck!) Savoring your desserts can drive you to pick high quality options that take very little volume to provide enormous enjoyment.
Solution 2: Alcohol can be another obstacle to healthy eating and preventing weight gain over the holidays. Alcohol contains 7 calories per gram (compare that to 4 for protein and carbs) and can really rack up your overall caloric consumption over the holidays. Try to avoid egg nog and cider, which are extremely high in sugar and calories. (One cup of eggnog can have 350 calories and 20 grams of sugar!) If you’re going to indulge in these seasonal beverages, make them yourself and limit how many you drink.

are an interval-based training model. The interval is 20 seconds of “all-out” work followed by 10 seconds of rest. This 20 seconds: 10 seconds ratio of work to rest is to be completed 8 rounds continuously for a total of 4 minutes.
Tabata Workout Example: a. Push-Ups b. Squats or Lunges c. Medicine Ball Slams d. Squat Jumps or Jump Rope How to do it: Do 20 seconds of push-ups, then rest 10 seconds. Do 20 seconds of squats, then rest 10 seconds. Do 20 seconds of ball slams, then rest 20 seconds. Do 20 seconds of squat jumps and rest. Repeat this cycle again for a total of 8 rounds. Another option is to complete all of exercise A for 8 rounds and move onto B, ect. Completion of exercise A-D for 4 minutes each is fast, intense 16 minute workout! 4. Sleep Soundly: Sleep controls our blood sugar, improves our eating habits, and is associated with higher activity levels and weight loss. When you’re trying to avoid holiday weight gain, sleep is your ally! Commit to a regular bed time on non-party days so that you can keep a healthy sleep schedule. Aim for eight hours of sleep on a regular basis so those few late nights don’t set you back. Equally important as the amount of sleep is the quality of our sleep. Light guides our sleep/wake cycles; sunlight wakes us up and resets our circadian rhythm, while the hormone melatonin prompts us to sleep. Unfortunately, we block this natural release of melatonin with blue light from electronics such as televisions, computers, phones, and tablets. Solution: Avoid using electronics in the three hours before your bedtime. If you must use them, install blue-light blocking tools such as F.luxx or use dim lights throughout the house and focus on relaxing activities such as a bath, reading, or meditation.

Our ongoing aeration and topdressing programs have significantly increased the quality of our bentgrass turf by improving drainage and overall turf density.
THE GREEN REPORT CHRIS HARRIMAN [GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT]
December is here and growth on the Golf Course has finally slowed down significantly. It certainly has been an amazing year with regards to the weather and improvements done on the Course. It is hard to believe the year is over already! Depending on the weather, the winter course will open sometime in the early New Year. We have seen success the past two years in using the winter course and keeping the greens exposed to the elements. Keeping the golfers off of the greens allows the plant to “harden off ” and gives the greens and tees some time to rest. When the turf is allowed to adapt and sustain during extreme cold weather, it will again have the ability to do so in the extreme heat of the summer. As the turf begins its cold acclimation process, the Green Department is allotted more and more time to get larger projects completed in preparation for the next season. Fairway and tee aeration and topdressing were completed in November. A number of new irrigation projects were completed and plenty of fresh tall fescue sod was laid in order to improve the consistency of our rough and reduce our water usage.
Naturalized area cleaning, cart path edging, rough drainage, railroad tie work, fixture refurbishment, and tree work are all part of the wintertime tasks. There are few things that always recur on the Golf Course year after year, but one of them is crazy weather. We prepare for and battle Mother Nature all year to ensure a good product is provided for the Membership. Many of our new agronomic programs are now in place and a solid base has been created. As the years roll on, we will be able to adjust and make changes as needed, but our basic concept will remain the same and that is to provide a healthy and consistent Golf Course. Make sure to keep up with the Green Department Blog as we continue making improvements to our fine facility. I would like to thank my incredible staff for another great year. Their determination and skills combined with unprecedented support from the Membership makes Cattail Creek a great place to be. Happy Holidays!

WINTER
GOLF AT C AT TA I L CREEK
Tyler Chaplin [First assistant golf Professional]
Golf is a year-long sport, and we have many Members who boast that they play every month of the year here in Maryland. However, that certainly did not happen with the amount of snowfall we had last year, but we are hopeful this winter will be better! If you are going to be hitting the links this winter, here are a few tips on how to play your best in the cold conditions. First, make sure you are wearing the best apparel for the conditions. As I am sure you have heard before, layers are essential in the cold. It does not necessarily have to be compression apparel, but a base layer, tech or wool, is always a good idea. Besides the base layer, and some long socks, a long
sleeve polo shirt, a wind sweater (remember, this is Cattail!), a winter hat, some hand warmers and you’ll be ready to go! The most important thing when picking out an outfit for winter golf is to make sure that you can still make a golf swing amid all the layers. If you feel you are being restricted, consider switching the wind sweater to a wind vest to free up your swing and range of motion. Hitting a couple of balls on the range and stretching is even more important with the colder weather. If you are able to come before your tee time to hit balls and loosen up, I highly recommend you do so. Some light stretching before you hit the first tee is encouraged as well. I like to walk during winter golf to keep my body warm throughout the round, so stretching and hitting a couple of range balls before I start ensures I can enjoy my round. As a friendly reminder, the golf course never truly closes, it just gets some adjustments. Once the snowfall starts, we will go to temporary tees and greens. This does not mean you can’t play! Trust me, the winter course is just as fun and frustrating as the Course in the summer. Stop by the Professional Shop, and we will have everything you need to continue to play and work on your game this off-season. We hope to see you all this winter!

We have all been there. Standing at the net, poised for whatever shot should come our way. Our racquet is up, our knees are bent, a steely look of determination on our face…
I have played tennis for over 25 years and each year a part of my game improves with the knowledge I gain from experience. Below I will share 5 mistakes that are easy to recognize and fix.
1. Focus on the process, not the results
our partner fires in a great first serve, our opponents size up the return and……lob it right over our head out of reach. Being lobbed is arguably one of the most frustrating things that can happen to a player on the court. A good lob is seemingly indefensible, or is it? Below are a few tips for thwarting the most annoying of opponents, the lobber. 1. Improve your overhead: Yes this seems like an obvious answer but many people do not spend enough time honing this shot. By improving your overhead and
When you are playing a match, we all play to win. However, players tend to focus all their thoughts on winning rather than executing a game plan. Instead, think on the strategies that will work throughout the course of a match. It will prevent you from tightening up on big points and keep you focused on optimal strategy instead.
becoming more confident hitting it aggressively you will begin to welcome every
2. Focus on long-term development, not short-term gain
hit out of the air if they simply took a few steps back. Instead of waiting for your
Players want results, fast. Instead of trying to win today, focus on developing your game so you can compete and beat the best players years down the road when it really counts.
3. No one is unbeatable Everyone is human, and every tennis player has a weakness. It is your job to find it and exploit it as best as you can. Be a warrior and compete; give it everything you have. Believe that you can win!
lob that comes your way and relish the opportunity to smash it back to your opponents! If you hit enough great overheads, your opponents may stop trying to lob you at all! 2. Take more lobs out of the air: Many players let a lob float by over their head because they are afraid to hit the overhead or misjudge just how high the lob actually is. Many players would be surprised how many more overheads they could partner to cover you on the lob, try turning sideways and drop back to hit the overhead yourself. If you remember to turn sideways and bring your racquet up, ready to swing as you drop back, you can cover many more lobs than if you back peddle while still facing the net. 3. Hit a more forceful approach: The best way to defend against the lob is to take away your opponent’s ability to hit one! When approaching the net, make sure you are hitting a forceful, aggressive shot, and if you can, aim it towards your opponent’s weakness. If hitting the ball with a good amount of speed is not an option, another good tactic is to try to keep the ball lower, or shorter in the court if possible. It is far easier to hit lobs off of waist level balls, so by approaching after you hit a lower, shorter ball, the lob is not as easy to execute.
4. Train with the best players possible
Obviously it would be great if we were all 7 feet tall like John Isner and did not have to
It is time to get out of your comfort zone. This will only make your game more rounded and will help your confidence when you need it. You should have a ratio of playing 50% at your level, 25 % at a higher level and 25% at a lower level. But, never give up an opportunity to play better players.
worry about the lob, but until another growth spurt try these tips at your next match or practice session to help you defend against the lob!
5. Make your serve a priority Trust me, you will thank me for this down the road. I come across too many players with an inconsistent fast first serve and a pancake soft second serve. Invest time with private lessons to make your serve a weapon. Your partner and your game will thank you for it, and in return you will get many free points.
