In Memoriam...

Dr. Peter DeMizio & Don Holcomb Written by Peter, Dr. DeMizio’s son My dad always loved going to Cattail, whether it was for a round of golf or just a meal in the dining room or bar. We definitely have a lot of fond memories from the golf course, driving range, and short game area. The club is very close to our house and it is easy to go there to practice or just relax in the beautiful setting. As you know, the golf course is pretty challenging and I think my dad would say he “donated” his fair share of balls in the rough and tall grass, but we always could appreciate how well kept and picturesque the course is. There were always plenty of good and memorable shots to make up for some not so perfect shots. My dad would easily say that he never had a bad meal at Cattail, in fact I know he would say that the food is excellent. Many, many times we had dinner in the dining room and were always so pleasantly surprised by the menu options and how well they were prepared. The staff is so kind and attentive, they know us by name and make the meal that much better. We would send my dad to pick up food from the club on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving which included the chef ’s famous crab dip and other items. We incorporated the crab dip into our Thanksgiving tradition because it is so good. As far as special events at the club, his favorite was definitely the Anniversary party. He went to several and couldn’t believe the impressive fireworks display, given that it went on for so long and was so close. We were able to bring many friends to the anniversary parties and they were amazed at how well is was planned and put together. Cattail has definitely been a favorite spot for gathering and good times for our family for several years.

Cattail Creek is saddened to announce the passing of one of our longtime Members Don Holcomb. Don and Gaye have been Members at Cattail Creek since 1989. Don was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in 1933 and graduated with an Electrical Engineering degree from the University of Oklahoma before going into the Marines where he served as an officer. After his service to our country, Don joined Westinghouse as a field radar engineer pioneering the first radar mapping of New Guinea in the 1960’s and became the lead radar engineer at Cape Canaveral for the Gemini Space program. Don was a devoted husband, father and grandfather - his greatest joy being his entire family. Don and Gaye have been married for 62 years; camping, sailing, travelling the world, and of course, playing golf together. Last year he shot his age three times at Cattail Creek. He was a regular on the course and on the driving range and he will be missed.

Blood oranges might sound unappetizing, but they earned that name because of the vivid red color of their flesh. The fruit is similar in taste and texture to a regular orange, but unlike traditional oranges, blood oranges aren’t available year round. That’s because they rely on certain kinds of weather to develop their red color. Blood oranges are in season from December through May, so I think it is the ideal time to use them in cocktails. This cocktail is perfect for Valentine’s Day. It combines the right amount of sweet and spice... and Champagne of course! INGREDIENTS:

THE GREEN REPORT CHRIS HARRIMAN [GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT]

February is here already and we have been riding the wave of odd winter weather. We have seen temperatures go from 0-60 in just a few days. It has been a few years though, that we have had a good freeze. This allows the turf to really harden off and any overwintering turf disease should be well decimated. The up and down weather has allowed us to complete a number of smaller outdoor projects, but February is normally our month to be inside working on our winter refurbishment list. Sometimes we need to be forced inside in the winter as there are many things to be attended to. All the benches, tee markers, cups, flagsticks, bunker rakes, water coolers, hazard stakes, machinery and maintenance facility itself have to be cleaned, washed, striped, sanded, scraped, pressure washed, painted, waxed, polished, clear coated and put back together. In addition to the Golf Course equipment we have the Driving Range furniture to tend to as well. We have already replaced the wire baskets on the range tee with new ball crates for 2018. Just tap the balls in the crate and more balls will feed out through the bottom opening. On the list for 2018 is to replace the hitting mat which is now 7 years old. The mat will be reduced to 6 feet wide and the patio enlarged. The new mat will have a pad underneath and makes for a much more enjoyable practice experience. We have a few outside tasks for the month of February on the slate. With the well pumps on Holes #13 and #15 being replaced last year, we found that the outflow line to the Hole #9 pond was well undersized. We will be rerouting the water from both of the wells via a larger pipe to the left of #18 cartpath. There, it will connect to an existing, properly sized pipe and the water can continue its run to the #9 pond. This change should allow us to have a better handle on irrigation and water supply throughout the season. If the weather treats us nicely we will also be looking to renovate the white tee on #12 in February. The tee will be straightened and aimed properly in order to increase teeing space and level the actual surface. The gold tee will be sliced off the front of the white tee and moved down closer to the stream. A separate gold tee will give more room to rotate wear up on the white tee as well as allow a shorter forced carry for whoever elects to play from the golds. Don’t forget to keep up with the Green Department Blog to stay abreast of happenings around the Course and think Spring!

The new ball crates are here; a new mat is up next!

We are very fortunate to have such a great team and we all look forward to delivering an exceptional golfing experience for our members and guests.

we are staying quite busy during the offseason. This is an exciting time for everyone, so be sure to mark your calendar for all the Club events! In addition, the Golf Staff has been diligently preparing for our annual trip to Orlando, FL for the 2018 PGA Merchandise Show on Tuesday, January 23 to Friday, January 26. This is always a great event for the team to travel together and experience such an important event in our industry. Our schedule will be filled with meetings and checking out all the latest and greatest equipment and merchandise for the upcoming year. Also, be on the lookout as will be hosting a new product Pre-Launch event for TaylorMade on Saturday, February 10 in the Learning Center! In April, we will have the “Masters at Cattail” Par 3 Contest and the Men’s Opening Day event.

The 2018 season will be a very special one because it See you on the Course! will mark an exciting milestone for the Club. This year Daniel E. Bengtson will be our 25th Anniversary and we will strive to deliver the best season yet. In an effort to deliver this experience,

Straight Distance with a Twist LEWIS SCHNAUBLE [FIRST ASSISTANT GOLF PROFESSIONAL]

The new TaylorMade M3 & M4 drivers contain a lot of impressive technologies but one stands out: Twist Face, which is exactly what it sounds like. The faces of these drivers are actually twisted a bit in the low heel and high toe areas. To counteract the high-toe miss (a hook), the driver face has been ‘twisted’ open (loft increased & face opened) on the high-toe to help straighten ball flight. Similarly, to counteract the low-heel miss (a slice) the driver face has been twisted closed to de-loft and close the face in the low heel area. Ultimately, TaylorMade’s Twist Face technology delivers a corrective face angle when hit off-center for longer, straighter shots; illustrated below.

In addition to Twist Face, the new M3 & M4 drivers have a technology called Hammerhead. The new Hammerhead technology creates a massive sweet spot that enhances ballspeed and forgiveness across the entire face. Split into zones, the Speed Pocket is now longer and more flexible in the center zone. The result is increased ball speed and lower backspin on low face strikes. The walls of the slot function as stiffening bars, which will allow for a thinner face and faster average ball speeds due to an enlarged sweet zone.

SETH LEE [25TH ANNIVERSAY COMMITTEE CHAIR]

The most treasured moments in life are when we can celebrate important milestones with family, friends and colleagues; for our wonderful Cattail Creek Country Club community, our celebration occurs on Saturday, June 23 when we commemorate our 25th Anniversary (1993 – 2018)! Combined with our annual Anniversary Party, this year promises to be one of the most memorable events for Club! With the warm weather right around the corner, the Cattail team is busy planning an array of events for the weekend - in addition to our Anniversary Party outstanding food, music, children’s entertainment, golf event and fireworks - our Food and Beverage team is working with a committee of Club members to offer opportunities to experience all that our tremendous Club amenities have to offer, including our awardwinning Professional Shop clothing and merchandise, short game golf practice facilities, the pool and tennis operations. As June approaches, each Cat Tales Magazine edition will update our membership about the 25th Anniversary event, and also feature stories about our history and growth - from the children of Members that grew-up at Cattail and now are Members themselves (our next generation) - to our original, lifelong Members whose loyalty, vision and contributions have made Cattail Creek into a welcoming and active family Club. In the meantime, be on the lookout for our exclusive “logo” 25th Anniversary merchandise. We have already started stocking our Professional Shop with 25th Anniversary logo merchandise, and don’t forget, custom orders are our specialty! Finally, we would enjoy receiving any photos you may want to share about your experiences at the Club with your family and guests, from our early days to present times. Please send them to: Gianna Rico, Communications Director, at gianna.r@cattailcreekcc.com and we will use them in our Magazine and for our event publicity to the Membership. Thank you for “saving the date” - with a lot more to come about the 25th Anniversary special events, registration and opportunities to celebrate! CAT TALES 2018

It is a must to learn this shot as early as you can in your tennis career. As you progress through the different stages and ability levels, your opponents will improve as well. The better opponents in tennis know that the low volley is difficult and can be quite good at targeting their shots down to your feet at the net—not knowing how to handle these shots can prove disastrous to your game. To perfectly execute this shot takes practice and commitment to doing it correctly, but I have tried to isolate the key components to handling the low volley. The first, and sometimes most difficult thing, for people to change is their grip. The best way to hit any volley, especially the low volley, is the Continental grip.
