s at N New Year'
Our goal with the new schedule for the Golf Shop is to allow the staff to get more rest in the offseason and spend more time with their families. As we enter the peak season in April, the Golf Operation is a seven-day operation (we will be open 13 Mondays this coming year for golf outings). The Golf Professional Staff has done a great job; they will enjoy this much-needed break.
General Manager's Update Dear Member, Happy New Year! As I write this letter the morning after hosting the Annual Club Holiday Cocktail Party, I have a smile on my face. This year’s event was different than in years past, as we had a record number of Members and Guests register for the party which created a need for us to host the party under a heated tent outside of the Clubhouse. Utilizing a tent for the party also allowed us more room in the Restaurant to seat Members for dinner and provide a smooth transition for the 185 who dined after. Chef Tom and his culinary team did a great job with oysters-on-thehalf-shell, shrimp cocktail, and many other delicious appetizers. There is no rest for the weary, and we are now setting our sights on our Christmas Eve Dinner, at which we are expecting over 400 Members and Guests. The Club’s social calendar offers more great events in January. Most notable, is our ‘Comedy Night’ on Saturday, the 26th. This will be our second time hosting the event, and this year we are hosting a new comedian who will also have an opening act. I will again be very nervous that evening, hoping that the comedian will be funny! Last year, the comedian was great and everyone in attendance had a great time. I tried to pre-arrange a few jokes for the crowd attending, only to find out that a comedian always wings it. There are always guests in the audience that stand out (for better or worse) and they become easy marks for the comedian. (Consider yourself warned, so keep a low profile and sit in the back unless you have thick skin!) In January, we welcome back the following events as well: Lobster Night, Adult Cooking Classes, Trivia Night, and a New Member Mingle gathering. As we enter the slower time of the season, the Club will again be operating under our winter hours, meaning that we will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, serving dinner only on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and open regular hours on the weekends. This year the Golf Shop will follow a similar winter schedule and be closed Monday through Wednesday each week. Please plan ahead if you need to pick up your golf clubs for travel.
The two new tennis courts are nearing completion. Our expectation is that construction will be finished by the middle of January, and the contractor will return in late March to finish the job. As I have watched the two new courts progress through the construction process, I have realized how nice it will be to sit on the Clubhouse’s veranda and watch Members play tennis. This will be especially great for special tennis events, such as our MemberGuests, Friday Night Fun-in-the-Suns, and the Tennis Classic, among many others. Currently, Joe Mattingly, Director of Tennis, and I, are in the process of hiring additional tennis staff for the 2013 season. As our plans firm up, we will continue to update you, and we are planning an icebreaker party this spring to meet the new staff. The 2012 season was a very successful season for the Club both operationally and financially. The main driver for our positive variances to budget (both actual & historical operating numbers) was increased Member participation throughout the Club. The 2012 membership drive was the most successful in our Club’s history. As important, the entire membership used the Club more often, both for regular usage, to attend our special events, and to host their own private functions. This is an important trend that we want to continue to grow. Please keep the Club in mind when entertaining, considering dining options, and when hosting events. We will do our best to make the time you spend at the Club quality time. As we enter the New Year, I would be remiss if I did not thank the many Members who volunteer their time so generously to make the Club the wonderful place that it is. Our Board of Directors, Committee Members and countless other Member volunteers, spend endless hours working on projects and tasks that improve the overall successfulness of the Club. We are very fortunate to have so many Members who care so much. Happy New Year, and here’s to a spectacular 2013 season!

The Cattail Room - It’s that elusive area of the Club where you can’t step foot as a kid. Except for a few special Club functions, the Cattail Room, with its glowing fireplace and hardwood floors remains off limits for kids under the age of 13. This year we begin a tradition of celebrating the birthday that gifts Cattail Room privileges – age 13! Tell your “12-going-on13-year-old” to watch the mailbox during their birthday month for a special card and a coupon for a complimentary birthday ice cream sundae. The coupon can be redeemed on their first official visit to the Cattail Room with their parents. Another Cattail Room milestone comes at age 16, when “kids” can dine in the Cattail Room without parents present. Think Homecoming, Prom, or a first date! The Cattail Room maintains a little bit stricter of a dress code than the other areas in the Restaurant; denim is not permitted, collared shirts are required for gentlemen (as is standard in the entire Restaurant), with jacket and tie being optional.

BUNKER to BUNKER Dear Member, Happy New Year! I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who supported our golf tournaments and the Golf Shop this past year at the Club. Although I joined the Cattail Creek team towards the end of the year, I know from speaking with Jason, Joe and my staff, that 2012 was a tremendous year at the Club. It is my hope to carry all of that momentum forward and make 2013 an even better season for golf here at Cattail Creek. I would also like to thank my remaining Professional Golf Staff, Nic Flickinger and Ricky Serrano for their hard work and dedication throughout the 2012 season and over the past couple of months during my transition. I have begun the process of hiring a new Assistant Golf Professional and have received interest from a lot of very talented and qualified individuals. I am confident that I will have a new Professional on board by early March. I have also been working on hiring a Merchandising Coordinator to assist me in the Golf Shop. I am confident that both of these individuals will make an immediate positive impact, and help to take our Golf Operations to new heights. Additionally, we are working to attract a couple of PGM Intern Apprentice Golf Professionals to add to our team this coming season. These college students help us out a great deal during the busy season and gain very valuable experience while working here at the club. Finding affordable short-term housing is a critical component to attacking the best candidates for the club. For the last few years, several Members have helped the Club by housing a summer intern and the overall experience for both parties was extremely rewarding. Please contact me with any questions if you think you may be interested.
I am looking forward to attending the annual PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, FL from January 20 –26. Ricky and I will be attending the PGA Teaching and Coaching Summit and Nic and I will be attending the Merchandise Show. We are sure to return with some great ideas for this coming season and will be placing the majority of our merchandise orders. After returning from Orlando, my wife and I will finally be making the big move to the Baltimore area (with baby Audrey in tow). I am very excited to be here at the Club on a full time basis and to be getting to know each and every one of you!
FAIRWAY FEATS John Gribbin shot a hole-in-one at Hammock Bay, FL with his 5 Hybrid (154 yards). Congratulations!
The Golf Shop hours in January and February will be 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. From January 1st until March 15th, the Golf Shop will be closed on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Additionally, the Golf Shop will be closed during the Club’s “Winter Shutdown” from February 3 through February 13. Beginning in March, we will be open additional hours. We still have a lot of great merchandise available in the Golf Shop this time of year, and we would love for you to stop in and say hello next time you’re at the Club. Everything for golf,

RICKY'S TIP: Anchoring Rule Proposed, But Not Yet Finalized RICKY SERRANO [DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTION] The United States Golf Association and Royal & Ancient Golf Club proposed that belly putters and long putters still can be used after January 1, 2016, as long as they aren’t anchored to the body. To explain what will and won't be allowed, the USGA has created this great infographic.

Take a look: The club is anchored ‘directly’ when the player intentionally holds the club or a gripping hand in contact with any part of his body, except that the player may hold the club or a gripping hand against a hand or forearm. An ‘anchor point’ exists when the player intentionally holds a forearm in contact with any part of his body to establish a gripping hand as a stable point around which the other hand may swing the club. You can also try it this way! You'll notice, pictured below, I am not anchoring the putter to my body.
Green Report CHRIS HARRIMAN [GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT]
January is here, and the colder temperatures will continue to occupy the forecast. The weather as a whole hasn’t been too terrible lately, enabling us to put a good dent in wintertime projects like sod work, bunker edging, and railroad tie replacement. As the ground starts to freeze and thaw in January, our work out on the Golf Course will be more limited. In light of the cold weather, the Winter Course will open on Thursday, January 3. The greens and tees are in a dormant state now, and won’t be mowed again until March. This ultimately means that the bentgrass is not growing and will not recover from any amount of traffic from golfers. We had great success last year with the Winter Course, allowing the greens and tees to rest and most importantly keeping Poa annua off of the bentgrass surfaces. The Winter Course not only provides a more manageable golf course in the cold weather but a great sanitation tool for keeping Poa anuua seeds from germinating in the greens and tees in the spring. Additional information about the Winter Course is available on the Green Department Blog. This winter we will again be taking on the task of refurbishing our equipment. Now that the turf has stopped growing, we will dig into our fleet of over 100 pieces of equipment. These machines are used day in and day out and we barely have enough time for light maintenance items like oil changes during the season. The winter weather gives us an opportunity to check bearings, races, seals, filters, spark plugs, brakes, tires, reels, blades, throttle cables, parking brakes, and all kinds of other parts that keep the machines working through our long growing season. We have worked hard to eliminate issues on the Course that stem from equipment down time and we will continue to utilize capital purchases and
Reel mowers are used to mow greens, tees, approaches, fairways and intermediate rough. We have a total of 31 reels which does not take into account the seven new greens mowers on the way for 2013. These mowers are taken apart and serviced as needed to make it through another season.
intelligent repair strategies to improve the condition of our equipment fleet. The wintertime always brings a nice change of pace on the Golf Course. The Green Department is able to shift out of a maintenance routine to a mode where serious progress can made every
day. Tasks like drainage, equipment refurbishment, edging bunkers, shop organization, railroad tie replacement, cartpath edges, and naturalized area work will yield great benefits for the next season and many thereafter.

JULIE SEANEZ [USTA COORDINATOR] Spring USTA tennis will incorporate the 2013 League Restructure. Cattail will offer leagues in both 18+ and 40+. If you are captaining a team, please let Julie Seanez know by Thursday, January 10 (julie. seanez@cattailcreekcc.com). If you are looking for a team to play on, email Julie with the level and the age group you are interested in. Key points about the new 40 & over adult leagues... 40 & over adult league replaces what used to be called "senior leagues." Players age 40 and above (or turning 40 anytime during 2013) are eligible to play, and separate leagues for men and women are offered at the 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, and "4.5+" levels. A team roster can have up to 20 players, and "4.5+" level (only) allows for up to two 5.0-rated players to join the team. Match format consists of 2 singles and 3 doubles courts. 40 & over leagues are advancement leagues; local winners progress to District, Section, and possibly National championships! Section rule 11.d applies to 40 & over leagues, but note: the 2013 Section rule allows for 3 players to be together on another team (and the rule still applies only between 40 & over programs running in the same season).

A Word from the Pro: JOE MATTINGLY [DIRECTOR OF TENNIS] What an exciting time for Cattail Tennis! The 2013 tennis season will be full of new capital projects and programs. Some of the new additions to the Tennis Facility will be two new clay courts, new benches & awnings on each court, new windscreens for the fencing, a refreshment center with an ice machine and water, a new court reservation board & information kiosk, and a new tournament board. We will also be announcing new policies and procedures for checking in at lessons & clinics, for court reservations, the ball machine, and guest play. This will allow us to streamline our billing process and eliminate errors by having Members sign off on each charge. Some of the new programs that the Tennis Staff will initiate include 'Challenge the Pro,' 'Top Dog Challenge Ladders,' ' World Team Tennis,' and a revised Mixed Doubles League. Look out for more information about these exciting programs! I hope everybody had a great holiday season, and we look forward to seeing you on the Courts this year!
TIM'S TIP OF THE MONTH: THE FAILURE FLAW TIM HALTER [HEAD TENNIS PROFESSIONAL] Using the key phrase of the Refocus Technique, "the next shot is more important than the last mistake," means you do not serve or return serve until you have cleared your mind of the last mistake. But why do people have so much trouble handling failure in the first place?
Stop connecting how well you perform on the tennis court with who, and what, you are as a person. They do not belong together. If you do not think you are guilty of this, answer three questions:
Even though they know that in order to succeed they must fail, it still doesn't matter. When the failures hit, they cannot cope. Most players use rationalization to justify their failures instead of just accepting them and moving on. Failure should be taken as a challenge. Yet all too often, failures, mistakes, and negatives are perceived as a threat. Why would they be a threat? Because of a single subtle or perhaps subconscious mental mistake: simply put, you take the failures too personally!
2. How many times in the last year have you wanted to quit tennis because you were playing poorly?
You have unknowingly related who you are as a person to how well you perform on the tennis court. "If I perform well, I'm a good person; if I perform poorly, I'm a bad person." This explains why so much rationalization and self-justification exists when confronting failures. There is no connection between how good you are as a tennis player and how good you are as a person. If this were true, at one point in his career, John McEnroe would have been the best person in the world!
1. When playing poorly do you ever feel sorry for yourself, or maybe let a little self-pity seep in?
3. Why can you not practice new things in your fun matches if they cause you to lose? One of the secrets to accepting your failures and moving on is to not take them too personally. The next time you fail, forget it and move on. Keep who and what you are as a person out of the equation, and I guarantee you will be more relaxed! Eventually you will learn to be relaxed but intense, an essential combination for top notch tennis. If you take everything too personally you may have the intensity, but without the relaxed part, there will be one word to describe you. Anxiety! Intense but anxious is not the correct combination. You will log too much time in the 'Emotional Sphere.' Intense but relaxed is the correct mindset for competitive play and pays huge dividends under pressure!
