This time of the year there are a lot of things happening at Cattail; swim team practice, all sports camp, tennis and golf lessons, matches, and tournaments, clubhouse events, etc. Also, at home there are family vacations, sporting events, college visits, birthday parties, volunteer work, social outings, and the busyness of regular day to day life. Summertime

is

busy,

regular

routines

are

broken and some things get cut out altogether. Unfortunately for most of us it is our regular workouts, fitness professionals included.

Your

workouts, once a regular three to four times a week occurrence, now happen maybe once or twice a week at best and sometimes two or three weeks go by without getting in a formal workout.

Don’t worry, it’s ok, this is a normal cycle that happens every year. The two things that get hit the hardest when it comes to working out in the summer are your time and enthusiasm. Here are three fixes to help you through your summer time workout slump.

TWO Keep it short. Try and cut your exercise time in half. If you typically workout for 60 minutes then do just 30 or if you usually get in 30 then try just 15. The shorten rtime will not seem as overwhelming to schedule and will probably fit into your busy summer routine more

to see how vigorous your busy summer schedule actual keeps you (sometimes you’re not moving as much as you might think).

Fitness Apps such as “Couch to

5K”, a running app, give you set regimented workouts which are usually 30 minutes or less and include a lot of specific direction. Most fitness apps are simple, just turn it on and go, you don’t even need to think about what you are doing. The summertime slump hits everyone every year; this year try one or all of these fixes to stay active this summer.

plant. Without wetting agents, the many localized dry spots around the Course would quickly die from drought stress.

On the other side, wetting agents also allow

water to move down into the soil. Although bentgrass is a superior surface to play golf on, it has an inherent problem of producing thatch. Thatch is basically dead stems and root material that accumulate just underneath the leaves of the plant. Without proper aeration and use of wetting agents, water would continually saturate this layer.

Saturated soil conditions yield higher soil

temperatures and disable gas exchange which ultimately lead to thin, mushy and dead turf. Our cultural practices alleviate this problem, and we work hard to maintain our bentgrass surfaces in a healthy manner. In addition to our cultural practices and use of wetting agents, we also use fans to keep the turf on our pocketed greens happy. Air movement across the surface of the greens on 4, 5, 6, 11, 12 and 13 is highly limited by the terrain as well as trees. The use of fans helps decrease

Tonal means it will be a shade darker or lighter than the threads on the polo. The Secret to Golf K.J. MCCLAY [ASSISTANT GOLF PROFESSIONAL]

We

the

overwhelmed, more commonly frustrated golfer, misses a three foot putt after hitting an amazing drive and beautiful approach shot. He waits for the opportunity to blurt the first excuse that comes to mind, or immediately is on the lookout for the nearest pond! The truth is, we have all been there. Yet, the secret to getting better at golf is much simpler than even a recreational three foot putt. The secret to golf, is discipline. How much time do you spend on the driving range in comparison to the putting green? How many tournaments have you seen won, in the fairway versus on the putting green? I can tell you that for every hour you spend on the driving range, you should spend at the very least two hours on the putting green! It is definitely no secret that a lot more golf balls are hit at the driving range than are hit at the putting green. There are mainly two types of putting strokes found most between the top players. The first one is described as a “straight back and straight through” style putting stroke, where the putter travels on a parallel path to your your stance. The next stroke is referred to as the “gate” stroke, where just as a gate does, the putter swings back a little inside, and slams “shut” or square through impact finishing a little left. When putting, you have to find out which stroke fits you best. It all comes down to how you can put yourself in a position to produce an ideal launch angle of two degrees. Spend more time on your putting and short game in general, and watch your buddies who will be stuck in amazement as they play a million scenarios in their brain about how you became an overnight sensation. Remember, drive for show and putt for dough!
