Bigger Faster Stronger (BFS) is an organization that, for the past 38 years, has provided coaching and training programs to athletes around the country. The BFS ‘Dot Drill,’ one of their warm up exercises, has become a popular agility training exercise that challenges coordination, strength, speed and agility. This month, the ‘Dot Drill’ serves as our July Fitness Challenge! Your goal is to cycle through each of the five drills, six times, as fast as you can. Reference this chart to see how your time stacks up. We have colored ‘dots’ in the Fitness Center for you to use, or if you are trying the drill at home, feel free to use tape on the ground or colored paper.

Spartina 449 has recently branched out into golf, and now also has ball markers, hat clips, shoe bags, and putter covers. Personally, I am a huge fan of their jewelry line which is all gold plated, usually with an accompanying color or print. We carry Spartina 449 bracelets, bangles, and necklaces. So far, Cattail’s Membership has really taken to this new product line, and I’m excited to see what their future lines bring.
Brighton jewelry has been a staple at Cattail Creek for years now. Their classic jewelry line is very well known, with stores all over the area, and their brand is highly regarded in the jewelry industry. Personally, I feel as if they have not only kept their existing customers with their summer line, but they have also expanded to the younger generation. They have some very cute beach oriented necklaces, which makes them the perfect gift for any East Coaster. I have also noticed they are expanding into more colorful necklaces and also gold, as they have been mainly a silver jewelry business. Based on what we saw at the trunk show after the Nine and Dine earlier this month, I am very excited to see what their fall collection will look like!

Putt Lefty for Better Control! RICKY SERRANO
[DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTION]
When practicing, stroke putts with only your left hand; it will help increase your overall control by training you to keep the putter blade moving towards the target, as guided by the back of your left hand. When you go back to putting with two hands, your left hand and wrist won’t break down, and you’ll hit your putts more solidly.
Process: A. Using your left hand only, hit about 10 putts from approximately 2 feet away. Concentrate on accelerating the putter through the ball, with the back of your left wrist moving directly at the hole.
B. Eventually increase the length of putts to 10 feet practicing until you are able to sink a few from the longer distances.

The format is a 9-hole, two-person scramble, divided into three 3-hole segments called “flags.” Each “flag” is worth one point, and alternates are allowed to sub in at the beginning of each “flag.” During each competition there are four, two-person matches. In each of the four matches there are three possible points with a total of 12 points for the competition. We have won our first three matches and have three more to go before the post season starts. MEN’S GOLF GUEST DAY
[FIRST ASSISTANT GOLF PROFESSIONAL]
Growing up in, and around, golf, one of the rules infractions that I recall from watching PGA Tour events was from 1987.
AND
Craig Stadler was playing in the San Diego Open at Torrey Pines when his tee shot on the 14th hole landed under a large cypress tree. In order to hit his next shot, he decided to hit it from his knees. He did not want to get his pants wet from damp grass, and therefore he placed a towel under his knees and hit the shot back into the fairway. Viewers from all over, called NBC to report the violation of USGA Rule 13-2.
One best ball of four. 90% handicap; gross & net divisions 110++ per player includes tee gift, cart, golf, breakfast (premium bloody mary bar & crushes) and lunch, beverage cart, open bar, and prizes.
13-2. Improving Lie, Area of Intended Stance or Swing, or Line of Play. A player must not improve or allow to be improved: • The position or lie of his ball. • The area of his intended stance or swing. • His line of play or a reasonable extension of that line beyond the hole.
• The area in which he is to drop or place a ball. By any of the following actions: • Pressing a club on the ground. • Moving, bending or breaking anything growing or fixed (including immovable obstructions and objects defining out of bounds).
• Creating or eliminating irregularities of surface. • Removing or pressing down sand, loose soil, replaced divots or other cut turf placed in position.
• Removing dew, frost or water. Craig Stadler cutting down a large cypress at Torrey Pines
However, the player incurs no penalty if the action occurs: • In grounding the club lightly when addressing the ball. • In fairly taking his stance. • In making a stroke, or the backward movement of his club for a stroke, and the stroke is made.
• In creating or eliminating irregularities of surface within the teeing ground or in removing dew, frost or water from the teeing ground,
• On the putting green in removing sand and loose soil or in repairing damage (Rule 16-1).
If broken, penalty for breach of rule: Loss of hole in match play, or a two-stroke penalty in stroke play. Stadler was later informed by officials of his rules violation and since he had signed the scorecard for an incorrect score, he was disqualified from the tournament. Eight years later, when the tree was dying of disease, Stadler was invited back to Torrey Pines to help cut it down.

Clubhouse Dear Members,
We’re Audubon Certi fied!
We are proud to inform you that Cattail Creek Country Club has achieved designation as a “Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary” through the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses. Chris Harriman, Golf Course Superintendent, led the effort to obtain sanctuary designation on the property, and he is being recognized for Environmental Stewardship by Audubon International. Cattail Creek Country Club is the 18th golf course in Maryland, and the 897th in the world to be designated as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. To reach certification, a course must demonstrate that they are maintaining a high degree of environmental quality in a number of areas. These categories include: Environmental Planning, Wildlife & Habitat Management, Outreach and Education, Chemical Use Reduction and Safety, Water Conservation, and Water Quality Management. There were many different components involved in the certification. Programs that Cattail implemented such as the rough grass conversion to turf type tall fescue (which uses less water and fewer pesticides), along with the renovation of the irrigation system in order to conserve, and efficiently use, water helped achieve certification. In addition, other projects like the building of the Cattail Kids Butterfly Garden, the returning of clippings to the Course instead of collecting them, increasing “no mow” areas, and composting natural Course debris aided in the achievement as well. As Cattail continues its partnership with Audubon International, these programs will be monitored and keep up with as to further enhance our positive effect on the environment. Cattail Creek Country Club has shown a strong commitment to its environmental program, and is to be commended for its efforts to provide a sanctuary for wildlife on the golf course property. Members can aid in helping Cattail maintain its certification by letting Chris Harriman know what types of wildlife you see on the Course and at your Club. Tracking the wildlife helps Cattail to maintain their specific habitats. For more information about the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary program, please visit http://www.auduboninternational.org/ acspgolf. We are certainly excited about Cattail’s new designation, and we hope it helps you enjoy the property a little bit more! Doug Bechtel Executive Director Audubon International

Anticipate, Don’t be Late! ALEX JUSTINIANI
[DIRECTOR OF TENNIS]
One of the most valuable tennis lessons I can offer, is the ability to move well without the ball. That means you have to learn to anticipate what your opponent is most likely to do next. In many cases, successful anticipation will be the difference between getting to the ball on time, and even winning the point. Here are a few scenarios that will help you anticipate what is about to happen in your own games: When to close out the net:

the next shot. Sometimes it happens because we’ve hit such a good shot that we take an extra minute and admire just how pretty it was. Sometimes it happens because it is hot, we are tired, and we simply do not feel like recovering back to the middle. Often times we get caught in the area between the baseline and the service line—the dreaded “no one’s land.” We let this happen entirely too often! When we get stuck here, we end up cutting down our reaction time for baseline shots, and are too far back to be in good volleying position. We need to either close into the net quickly, or recover back to that baseline until we find an opportunity to come into the net. Be patient, keep recovering, wait for an opportunity to close into the net, and stay out of “no one’s land!”
