M
ost of us know that our Club is different. Our members and staff alike know that there is something special about Cattail. It is a really fun club. Members are nice to one another. And to the staff. New Members are welcomed with open arms and founding Members are respected. People (and by that I mean Members, guests, staff, and vendors) look forward to coming to Cattail Creek.
Often, you’ll hear that when someone joins Cattail Creek, they become part of the ‘Cattail Family.’ Being that I get to establish close relationships with most new Members as they join and use the Club, I know first-hand that this is true. Two weeks ago, on Sunday, May 19, I witnessed an amazing event at Cattail Creek that hands-down exemplified just how amazing the ‘Cattail Family’ really is.
“When someone joins Cattail Creek, they become part of the ‘Cattail Family.’”
The Cattail Creek Women’s Golf Association (CCWGA), began to host the ‘Rally for the Cure’ 9-hole golf tournament circa in 2000. The women who formed the original committee and were responsible for planning and executing every aspect of the golf event and as years went on, also the dinner that followed. Eventually the event turned into one that included men, and it began to grow. The theme was pink and the goal was to raise money for breast cancer research. The original committees set in place many of the long-standing traditions that remain integral parts of the annual event including the silent auction and contest for the foursomes dressed in the most pink (and for the record, underwear counts too!). For the last three years, Member, Amy Caro, has chaired the ‘Rally for the Cure’ committee. Just as her predecessors did, she has succeeded in making each year’s event more fun and more profitable, than the last. This year, she and Stephanie Nucci, who evolved into a co-chair as planning went on, introduced new dynamics that re-energized this event into one that the entire Membership could embrace, golfer or not. Together with the other ‘Rally’ Committee Members: Loraine Herdrich, Gaye Holcomb, Heather Smyth, Lurdes Abruscato, Pam Feldman, and Bob Wampler, the group executed a first-rate experience.
New for this year, in order to accommodate more players, the event was moved from a Friday to a Sunday and became a full 18-hole tournament. The golf portion of the event was at-capacity with a 120-player shotgun, and for the first time ever, the deluxe dinner that followed was booked and also sold-out. Most impressive to watch, was the way that all sectors of the Club pulled together and donated in unique ways to enhance Catail’s bottom-line donation. The Cattail Creek Women’s Tennis Association(CCWTA), showed crossover support for the CCWGA’s banner event by selling $5 pink tennis ball cut-outs that are currently on display in the Tennis Building bearing the names of those who donated to the cause. Members who visited the Restaurant during the month of May, could purchase pink flags. Some flags were bought simply to support a good cause, some reflected the names of family members, and others honored the names of close friends who also happen to be fellow members at Cattail Creek.

Many Members, including those who participated in Men’s Opening Day and the Hiahleah, responded back to the CCWGA’s appeal for auction items. This year’s silent and live auctions boasted many sets of awesome sports tickets, gorgeous vacation home rentals, gift baskets, and many certificates for services and products. Those who attended the dinner portion of the event also came through in a record-setting way opening their hearts and wallets when it came time to bid on the silent and live auction. Also new for 2013 were the sponsorship opportunities. Stephanie Nucci deserves a hats-off for her efforts to secure ‘hole sponsors’ and a banner sponsor, Russell BMW (Members, Wade and Melanie Sterry), who generously donated a 2-year lease on a beautiful BMW as a hole-in-one incentive, that unfortunately went unclaimed this time. Joe Mattingly, Head Tennis Professional, and Bob Wampler, Head Golf Professional, and their teams, donated lessons to the silent auction and also donated a percentage of their private lesson income from the week leading up to the event. John Foelber, Fitness Director, also donated a consultation and lesson. 10 CAT TALES NEWSLETTER
Chef Tom Caswell has donated every year since the Rally began, this year with a catered meal for four in the home of the highest bidder. He upped the ante further with ‘Pink Plate Specials,’ donating $2 from the sale of every entrée special sold in the Restaurant the week leading up to the date of the event.
Even the number of Member volunteers dramatically increased this year. In addition to the Rally Committee, dozens of other Members, many who weren’t even golfing, volunteered hours of their time in the weeks leading up to the event, and arrived early the day of, to ensure that everything was in order.
Carey Ward, Communications Director, ate, breathed, and slept, ‘Rally for the Cure’ for the six weeks leading up to the event. There is no doubt that much of the success of this year’s event can be attributed to her tireless efforts. Carey significantly enhanced the branding for this event, created many new printed promotional items, and hit the message home that the CCWGA was hosting a serious fundraising event.
And the proof was in the pudding. In 2012, our total donation was just shy of $10,000. Everyone’s efforts paid off and we blew last year’s grand total out of the water, raising nearly $20,000! Amy Caro and the rest of the 2013 ‘Rally for the Cure’ Committee, have their work cut out for them to top their efforts next year.
“Everyone’s efforts paid off and we blew last year’s grand total out of the water”
Cattail Creek’s ‘Rally for the Cure’ event is evolving into something really big and influential. Everyone who participated in any way, be it by sitting on the planning committee, attending the event, volunteering, sponsoring, donating, bidding, or just spreading the word, should pat themselves on the back. This year’s fundraiser was a smashing success that we should all be very proud of.

Golf Shop News LAUREN BURNS
[MERCHANDISE COORDINATOR]
It has been a great first two weeks for me here at Cattail Creek. After graduation, the move-in, and my first couple of days at work, I am beginning to feel at home here in Maryland! I really appreciate all of the input I have already received about the selection in the Professional Shop. Having a direct conversation with a Member is the best way for me to learn likes and dislikes for future orders. I hope to meet many more of your soon, and please continue to come to me with your feedback on our merchandise selection. Although we always have new items arriving in the Professional Shop, I would like to highlight our new Swing Control skorts, shorts, and capris. Every item has a ‘tummy control’ design feature and ‘pull on’ feature, which means there are no zippers or buttons. I'm wearing the black skort in the photo below.
Club Repair If you break it, more than likely we can fix it! We can take care of your club repair needs: regripping, reshafting, club length alterations, changing lie and loft, and more. If we cannot take care of it in-house, we can have it sent away and back repaired in less than a week.
Corporate Orders Keep the Golf Shop in mind for items you want to order for your company. Clothing, headwear, golf balls, golf bags, travel gear, and leather goods are just some of the items that can sport your corporate logo. Whether it is a staff uniform or corporate retreat gift, you cannot beat these items at the Mill River Discount pricing! Gift Wrapping The Professional Staff is more than happy to wrap any gift that you may purchase through the Golf Shop. Let this service add an extra special touch to a holiday, birthday, graduation, or get-well gift. Handicaps
You can easily establish your USGA handicap through the Golf Shop. In conjunction with the Maryland State Golf Association, we can get you signed up so that you can start posting your scores to build your handicap. You will also be able to access your handicap remotely via www.msganetwork.org to post while you are away from the club.

The material has a very unique feel, and all of the items come in a variety of colors and patterns that can be special ordered, too! RICKY'S TIP: How to bomb your drives! RICKY SERRANO [DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTION] The keys to hitting long and straight drives are hitting the ball with a high launch, and producing low spin. Too many amateurs who struggle with their driver have too low of a launch angle and they produce too much spin. Setting up correctly with your driver will increase your chances in hitting the ball longer with the proper launch and spin. Here are my setup keys: • Tee the ball up high enough so that the top line of the driver is even with the bottom of the ball. • Play the ball forward in your stance; the ball position should be directly inside your left foot (for right handed golfers). • Tilt your spine a few degrees to the right; your shirt buttons should be more to the right than your belt buckle. • Take a slightly wider than shoulder-width stance and make sure your not gripping the club too tightly. If you set up correctly and you hit up on the ball, you will notice your tee shots go higher with low spin, and greater distance. Come and see me at the Learning Center if you are having trouble with these keys!
TYSON McFARLAND [ASSISTANT GOLF PROFESSIONAL] For some rules in golf, there is a difference in the rulings if you are playing stroke play, or if you are playing match play.
TYSON'S RULE OF THE MONTH 14 CAT TALES NEWSLETTER
Teeing from an incorrect teeing ground is one of those rules. In a stroke play situation, if a competitor plays a ball from outside the teeing ground, they incur a penalty of two strokes and then must play the ball from the correct teeing ground. In a match play scenario, if a player plays a ball from outside the teeing ground there is no penalty, but the opponent may immediately require the player to cancel the stroke and play a ball from within the teeing ground. It is important to be mindful of which format you are playing when it concerns the rules of golf!

GREEN DEPARTMENT: MEET THE MANAGEMENT STAFF! Matt Harvey is a new addition to our management team this year. Recently this past May, Matt earned his Bachelors of Science in Turfgrass Management from Penn State. Prior to jumping into Turfgrass, Matt served in the Army for 5 years as a Military Police officer. After the army he became a corrections officer in Orange Country, California. Matt is originally from DuBois, PA but currently resides in Waynesboro, PA.
Tyler Brunk has been a seasonal worker on the crew at Cattail Creek for over 7 years. Just finishing his first year of school at the University of Maryland for Golf Course Management, he is excited to do his internship this summer learning everything necessary to become an Assistant Golf Course Superintendent. George Casto has held the position of Assistant Golf Course Superintendent at
Cattail Creek for 5 years now. Prior to coming to Cattail, George worked at Chestnut Ridge as an Assistant superintendent for three years, as well as a few courses in Utah. George plays the primary role in keeping the crew organized and does an outstanding job with water management and maximizing our new irrigation upgrades. George graduated from Utah State University in 2006 with a Bachelors of Science in Horticulture with a Turfgrass emphasis. George is originally from Frederick, MD and resides there with his 7 Year old black lab named Thayne.
Felix Ramirez has been at Cattail Creek for over 18 years. Felix worked on the Green Department Crew for much of this time but was promoted to Assistant Golf Course Superintendent in 2008. Felix is the “go to guy” for many of our projects and irrigation work. As our historian,
Felix can tell you anything you want to know about what is above or under the ground on the Golf Course. Residing in Gettysburg, PA, Felix drives about 45 minutes each way to get to work.
Chris Harriman is in his third season as Golf Course Superintendent at Cattail. Prior to coming to Cattail, Chris worked as an Assistant Golf Course Superintendent at Chevy Chase Club and Kinloch Golf Club. Chris graduated from Auburn University in 2003 with a Bachelors of Science in Turfgrass Management and just recently earned his Master’s degree from an online Penn State Turfgrass program. Originally from the eastern shore of Maryland, Chris spent much of his youth working on the golf course, playing golf and mowing neighbor’s lawns. Chris, his wife Nicole (a Nurse Practitioner), 5 month old daughter Avery and Yukon the yellow lab, now live in Mount Airy.

A FITNESS TIP: Five Ways to Get Ready for Beach Season! JOHN FOELBER [FITNESS DIRECTOR] 1. Change up your cardio routine. It is easy to get stuck doing the same cardiovascular exercise with little variation when a change might help boost your metabolism and help you lose those extra few pounds. To add in some variety into your routine you can try an elliptical instead of walking, or going for a jog instead of walking on the treadmill. Regular cardio routines are great, but unless you’re seeing constant progress, you need to make some changes. 2. Strength training is crucial. To get muscular tone and definition, strength training is king. You can use weight machines, free weights, or cables. Try to incorporate compound strength movements like squats, lunges or a seated leg press for your lower body, and rowing and pulling exercises for your upper body like a pull up, body weight row, or a dumbbell press variation. 3. Commit to a healthy diet. It is hard to see body composition changes from exercise alone, and if you’re serious about making a change, start with your diet. Being strict with your diet all week just to cheat or throw it away over the weekend or at a social occasion is typical for most. Challenge yourself to be consistent with a healthy diet every day no matter the occasion or event, you will be amazed at your progress if you stay on track with your diet. 4. Recommit to your fitness goals and be consistent. If your goals are to trim up, lose weight, or get toned, that’s a good start. But do you know exactly what you want? Getting more specific with your goals like “I want to get toned in my arms, abdominals and inner thighs” will help you decide what to do when you work out. This will help make better use of your time in the gym. 5. Drink plenty of water. Eight 8 oz. glasses of water a day is a great recommendation, but if that seems like a lot, just try adding in a few extra cups a day. Instead of a soda, try a glass of ice water; it actually increases your metabolism!
Schedule a session with John by clicking here, or contacting him directly. All sessions are 60 minutes long. Individual Rates $75/session 20 session package: $1,300 Small Group Rates (2 - 3 Members) $47/session/Member

C ADE BU
JUNIOR SPOTLIGHT 15 year old twins, Cade & Bennett Buch, children of Carl and Tracy Buch, became Members at Cattail five years ago. Immediately the boys took to tennis and golf, respectively. After an unsuccessful attempt to make the interclub golf team at Cattail, Bennett played as much golf as he could for an entire summer, and befriended a group of junior golfers who share his (and Cade's) friendship to this day.
UCH
TB BENNET
Around the same time, Cade was introduced to Joe Mattingly through his first tennis camp experience. He had developed a liking for the game, and Joe became a great mentor, along with Tim Halter, and other staff at the time, Matt McDaniel, and Caitlin Erickson. Joe still coaches Cade today. Both Cade and Bennett have spent hours at the Club perfecting their games, and working with Cattail Professionals. Parents, Carl and Tracy say the friendships both they and their sons have made throug their passions at the Club will be lifelong. "What better place to have your kids grow up than Cattail Creek?" In 2012, Bennett won the Maryland Public School State Golf Championship, and Cade placed fourth in the 2013 Maryland State Regionals Tennis Matches. MAY 2013 17

TRAIN FOR OPTIMUM PLAY TIM HALTER [HEAD TENNIS PROFESSIONAL] To master playing at your highest level under pressure, or even in practice matches, you must adopt two different methods to train your mind and body. One method works from the inside, then out. The other works from the outside, then in. Both methods support each other in the process of becoming a formidable competitor. INSIDE-OUT TRAINING Inside-out training is the most difficult, but the results are quick. To train from the inside out means you train your mind to let the body go in match play. This training requires you to make a decision to trust your body to perform as you mentally let go and execute your shots, shunning all tentativeness or cautiousness. The freedom you practice on the inside will ultimately improve your strokes on the outside. But if you do not practice mentally letting go, your training from the inside out will cease and you will never reach your highest potential on the court. In principle, letting go is easy. You tell yourself to let go in a match and allow whatever happens to happen. But in application, letting go is much more difficult. Why? Two obstacles stand in every player's way: the obstacle of emotions and the obstacle of external conditions.
"Maybe I was not playing at my best level, but I still maintained an excellent attitude. And if you play with a good mental attitude, even if you are not a hundred percent, you can win because, in fact, you win more with your heart, with your willpower, than with anything else." [Rafael Nadal] The obstacle of emotions: When emotions control a player's mind, distorted thinking can result. Oddly enough, players tend to distort the simple concept of letting go because they mentally link it to playing well. If they are letting go and playing well, they will continue freely going for their shots. However, at the first sign of failure or mistakes, letting go is easily abandoned! In their minds, letting go is not working so they scurry back to their comfort zone of more cautious play. Abandoning the "letting go" mindset during adversity is like stopping a practice session every time there is a miss. At this rate, learning to think correctly in match play will take forever! For players to learn to play at their optimum level, they must practice training their minds to let go constantly, in good times and bad, in successes or failures, through thick and thin.
The obstacle of external conditions: Facing this obstacle, a player abandons the high-performance mindset of letting go because he feels the conditions are not right. Below is a list of possible excuses. 1. I do not like the courts. 2. The balls were not hit to me at the right height. 3. There is too much wind. 4. The balls were coming too fast. 5. The balls were coming too slow. 6. The net player kept moving. Not one of these reasons is a justified excuse for eliminating the "go for your shots" mental attitude. That attitude is your only hope of playing your best tennis that day! Inside-out training means you mentally control letting the physical body go, regardless of your emotions, circumstances or opponents. OUTSIDE-IN TRAINING Often, players who cannot mentally let go in a match simply do not trust their strokes enough. This means they must bring their belief level up. How? Tennis Warrior repetition training, of course! Through repetition practice they can bring their physical game to a higher level, allowing them to be more comfortable trusting that game in match play. This is called outside-in training because the body actually influences the mind to perform better. Both of these methods, inside-out and outside-in, are essential for all competitors to play at their optimum level in match play. Train from the inside out by mentally letting go, and from the outside in by improving the physical to influence the mental. Ultimately, though, to stay positive during the adversities of match play, the mind must bear most of the responsibility. I think Rafael Nadal, after a tough win over Federer, said it best. "What is important is that my attitude was always positive," Nadal said. "I had a winner's attitude. What is positive is maybe that I was not playing at my best level, but I still maintained an excellent attitude. And if you play with a good mental attitude, even if you are not a hundred percent, you can win because, in fact, you win more with your heart, with your willpower, than with anything else."
