GenEral Manager NOTES GREG COLOMBO, CCM [GENERAL MANAGER]

Spring has sprung quickly into summer with the Pool now officially open, beautiful weather upon us, and families able to take advantage of all of the activities that the Club has to offer. The warmer temperatures Memorial Day weekend made the Pool the place to be, and Friday through Monday the Golf Course had over 625 rounds, not to mention all of the practice that took place at the Range and new Short Game Area. If you have any family or friends that are considering a private club, this is the time of the year for them to join so that they can enjoy the entire season at Cattail with you! Please direct them to Gabby Forte, Cattail’s new Membership Director, to get them started on the Membership process. We officially welcomed Gabby earlier this month, and I am very excited to have her join our team. I am confident that she will step into her role seamlessly! Also, I would like to encourage our Members to take a few moments to fill out the tennis survey that was sent to Golf & Social Members via email last week. This comprehensive survey will be greatly beneficial not only to determine the need for a tennis bubble, but to evaluate programming, usage and activities by our tennis-playing Members and what is important to them. The Club’s signature event, the Anniversary Party, will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2015. Please refer to the article on page 8 by Jennifer Turowski, Catering Director, about all of the fantastic changes and additions that we have made to the Club’s annual celebratory event. You will not want to miss it! See you at the Club!

Hello, Members! I’m very happy to introduce myself as one of the newest members to the Cattail team! My time here so far has been wonderful – all the Members I have met have made me feel very welcome. I’d like to thank everyone that came to the ’Farewell & Hello’ reception a few weeks ago held for Lynn Slupski and I. It was wonderful to meet you all, and I am honored to be taking the reins from such a well-respected and loved staff member. I’m eager to contribute in my own way to the great things going on at Cattail, and to not only continue to grow the Membership, but also to help keep our current Members happy. Growing up in the Baltimore area, my background has always been centered on the hospitality industry. I

JUNE FITNESS CHALLENGE Stop by the Fitness Center- really, you should! John Foelber [DIRECTOR OF FITNESS] It’s June already! Most of you have had the opportunity to enjoy tennis, golf and just recently time by the pool on a more regular basis. This usually leaves little time to keep up with regular workouts and focus is lost on personal fitness goals (unless you did nothing over the winter and can’t fit into your spring and summertime clothes). This month we will track. on a daily basis. how many different Members use the Fitness Center by using our keypad system. As you should know. your Fitness Center access code is tied to your Membership number and classification. Codes will only be active for those who have a signed the Fitness Center release form on file.

Sara Cooper [FITNESS INSTRUCTOR] Massaged Kale & Fuji Apple Salad Ingredients 1 bunch kale 1 lemon, juiced 1 tsp. of Celtic sea salt 1 avocado ¼ cup walnuts, chopped 3T hemp seeds 1 large organic Fuji apple, Instructions 1. De-stem the kale leaves from the stem by simply placing your index finger and middle finger (in the shape of a claw), and “claw” down the center of the leaf to de-stem while simultaneously pulling the leaf away from you with your other hand. 2. In a large bowl, combine the de-stemmed kale leaves, lemon, salt and avocado. 3. Using a massaging action (similar to kneading bread dough), start to tear the leaves apart and massage the oils from the avocado into the leaves. 4. Continue massaging for about 2-5 minutes or until the leaves are soft.

As to be expected our entire Membership is polite and cordial,

door for others. If you do this or come in at the same time as others, please put in your own unique Member access code so that every visit counts. Let’s shoot for a one day total of 45 visits and a monthly total of 600 visits (20 per day average).

Kale is a fantastic leafy green containing many nutrients such as vitamin A, vitamin C, Vitamins B1, B2, B6, folate, manganese, calcium, and iron. Its texture is multifunctional, which lends to a wide variety of uses. Why massage it? Massaging breaks down the fibrous cellulose, which makes it easier to digest. Digestion begins in the mouth and kale can be tough on the jaw. It requires a lot of mastication on our part. A combination of Celtic sea salt, lemon juice, and avocado oil help soften the kale to make it more enjoyable to eat raw. Pressed for time? Make the massaged kale salad base and store in a container in the fridge. Top with additional nuts, seeds, fruit, and veggies when you’re hungry. Boost the ingredient amounts depending on your individual goals and energy needs. For example, if you want it to be higher in protein add additional beans, lentils, eggs, or other proteins of your choice.

With the Golf Course in a strong nutritional state, this summer we will begin attacking the weed Poa annua a bit harder. Poa annua’s main goal in life is to produce a seed and try to spread. A tight bentgrass playing surface is the best defense against the spread of Poa. Once Poa produces a seed head, its energy is at its lowest level. That means that now, and through

The 2015 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay in Washington will take place June 18-21. We will once again be offering two different pools to add some extra excitement to the season’s second Major. Both contests are open to all Members (Golf, Social and Dining). Here are the details: Randomly Drawn U.S. Open Pool Members may purchase an entry for $10 (Maximum of ten entries per Member). Players will be drawn at random, and each player in the field will be assigned to a Member. Golf Shop sweeps credit will be awarded to the top 5 finishers. U.S. Open Dream Team Contest Pick any five (5) players and one alternate to form your U.S. Open Dream Team. Of your five (5) selected golfers, four (4) must make the “cut” AND stay in play through the weekend to remain eligible. If all 5 of your golfers make the cut, and all 5 stay ‘in play,’ and then the lowest 4 of those 5 overall scores on Sunday will determine your final score. *Alternate to be used in case one of your original selections is scratched before tee-off on Thursday morning. Tiebreaker will be the total number of shots over/under par for the overall U.S. Open Champion. Check out the article from Jacob Wichtowski, Golf Pro Intern, covering ‘What to Watch’ during the U.S. Open Championship Maybe it will help your ‘Dream Team’ outcome!

Although getting a private lesson from Roger Federer, the greatest player in history, might be nothing more than a pipe dream, the pros can still teach us a thing or two! emulate what they are seeing on television. Your brain can benefit from seeing the proper way to hit a stroke, the same way it benefits from practicing the same stroke on a tennis court. Even taking a few “practice swings” in front of your television in your living room can help improve your technique! The next time you are channel surfing, do not skip over the Tennis Channel, but watch and learn a thing or two. Think of each match as a free tennis lesson from your favorite pro. At least this way when you are sitting on your couch you can feel like you are still practicing!
